IFSSO Executive Board Convenes in the Philippines


The Executive Board of the International Federation of Social Science Organizations (IFSSO) met in Batangas City, Philippines last April 30, 2011. The meeting was attended by IFSSO President Teruyuki Komatsu, Secretary General Nestor Castro, Board Member Leon Ramos, Acting Deputy Secretary General Joseph Lalo, and three official representatives from the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), namely Ms. Jintanapa Sobhon, Ms. Choosri Keedumrongkool, and Ms. Kloyjai Samretwanich. The venue of the meeting was at the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU). The main agenda of the meeting were to look into the status of the preparations for the 20th IFSSO General Conference and to finalize Conference plans with members of the LPU Management Committee.

20th IFSSO General Conference Program Finalized The International Federation of Social Science Organizations (IFSSO) has finalized the program of its 20th General Conference. This Conference, with theme Social Science Perspectives on Human Security will be held on November 18-20, 2011 at the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) in Batangas City, Philippines. There will be six plenary sessions during the Conference covering the following themes: 1. Country Perspectives on Human Security: 2. Health Security; 3. The Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights: Protecting Companies and Promoting Rights in Affected Communities (organized by Monkey Forest Consulting Ltd); 4. Reducing Social Vulnerabilities to Environmental Degradation: Interdisciplinary Approaches and Tools for Analysis (organized by SESAM-UPLB); 5. Traditionalism versus Cultural Transformation; and 6. Emerging Models and Challenges. see back page...

INSS is Newest IFSSO Member Organization

The Institut des Sciences des Socits (INSS) of Burkina Faso became the newest member organization of the International Federation of Social Science Organizations (IFSSO). The INSS applied as a full member of IFSSO in January 4, 2011 and its application was favourably confirmed by the IFSSO Executive Board during its meeting in Batangas City, Philippines in April 30, 2011. The INSS is the oldest research body within the National Centre of Scientific and Technological Research (CNRST). It is the direct heir of the French Institute for Black Africa (IFAN), which was founded in 1936 in Dakar (now the capital of Senegal). The IFAN then established an office in Ouagadougou (now the capital of Burkina Faso) in 1949. The IFAN experienced several reorganizations until 1995 when the institute was officially renamed to INSS. see back page...

IFSSO Executive Board Convenes in the Philippines

Dr. Castro gave a report on the accomplishments of the Federation since the May 2010 Executive Board Meeting in Bali, Indonesia. Among these accomplishments were the acceptance of the Institut des Sciences des Socits of Burkina Faso as a full member organization, the timely and regular publication of the IFSSO Newsletter, and the reactivation of the IFSSO website. Dr. Castro also reported about IFSSOs participation in the 28th General Assembly of the International Social Science Council (ISSC) in December 2010 and IFSSOs co-sponsorship of an International Symposium in February 2011. in Nagoya, Japan and attended by Prof. Komatsu and Dr. Castro. Regarding the preparations for the upcoming IFSSO General Conference, the Executive Board Members inspected the proposed conference venue and were updated about the paper abstracts that were received from various institutions. The Executive Board then met with the LPU Management Committee, headed by Dr. Esmenia R. Javier, to clearly delineate the roles and responsibilities of LPU and those of IFSSO. The meeting ended with a cultural heritage tour of Batangas City.

cont... Aside from the plenary sessions, there will be eight simultaneous sessions organized along the following themes: 1. Theoretical and Methodological Approaches; 2. Disciplinal Perspectives; 3. Natural and Man-made Disasters (1); 4. Natural and Man-made Disasters (2); 5. Economic and Food Security; 6. Vulnerable Groups; 7. Governance and Political Security; and 8. Community Security. A total of 55 papers will be presented in the Conference consisting of one keynote address, 22 plenary papers, and 32 session papers. The speakers come from 16 countries, namely Burkina Faso, Canada, China, Colombia, Germany, Ghana, Hungar y, Indonesia, Japan, Nigeria, Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, and the United States. The Conference keynote speaker is Dr. Michael Kuhn, President of the World Social Sciences and Humanities Network (World SSH Net) and co-editor of the book Globalisation of the Social Sciences (2010). Dr. Kuhn will read a paper entitled Beyond the Reflexive Borders of the Western Worlds Social Science System. Among the other prominent speakers of the Conference are Dr. Hidasi Judit (Dean of the Budapest Business School), Dr. Ma. Victoria Espaldon (Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Management of the University of the Philippines Los Baos), Mr. Dundin Zaenuddin (Director of the Research Centre for Regional Studies of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences), Dr. Ik Ki Kim (Full Professor of Dongguk University, Ms. Krista Hendry (Executive Director of The Fund for Peace), and Dr. Alexandra Guqueta (Academic Director of the Fundacin Ideas para la Paz). The principal mission of the INSS is to design and execute programs in the various fields of the human and social sciences. The objectives of the INSS are as follows: 1. To ensure the effectiveness and success of development actions and the consolidation of national identity; 2. To ensure the dissemination and use of national scientific research in general; 3. To ensure better coordination of national research programs in Social Sciences and the Humanities with emphasis on collaborative research with external partners. The Institute is made up of five departments, namely: Department of Socio-Economics and Development Anthropology; Department of Population Sciences; Department of Education Sciences; Department of Linguistics and National Languages; and Department of Legal, Political, and Administration Sciences.
