DESCRIPTION :

Ambient energy is a good supplement to existing hybrid power systems. Among the available options, solar is one of the most readily obtainable and technologically compatible sources. However, uncertainty of sun radiation intensity and changing atmospheric conditions impose challenges in efficient usage of sun power. Significant progress has been made during the last decades in optimally harvesting solar energy for single input power

system. However, little literature focuses on the control and coordination of solar energy conversion with other actively controlled sources and storages. This paper proposes the operation and control of solar power conversion in Multiport Power Electronic Interface (MPEI) for different modes of operation: load sharing mode and battery recovery mode. The control structure for solar maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in load sharing mode is proposed for optimal harvesting from solar panel and to provide immunity to load dynamics. Current-Mode Maximum Power Transfer (CMMPT) method is proposed to transfer maximum power to battery during charge recovery.

EMS 2020. DEVELOPING DC TRANSMISSION NETWORKS USING DC TRANSFORMERS

This paper studies principles of developing dc transmission grids based on high power dc/dc converters. There has been much research on dc/dc converters and it is likely that some megawatt

size units will achieve commercialisation stage soon. In this study, we assume that electronic dc transformers can achieve three functions: 1) voltage stepping, 2) voltage (or power) regulation, and 3) fault isolation. The simulations of worst case faults on dc lines and ac grids show that dc transformers can isolate the faulted segments enabling the remaining part of the grid to operate normally. The generic principles of developing more complex dc grids with meshed power flows, are also presented. It is concluded that there are no significant technical barriers in developing dc transmission grids but the cost and losses of dc transformers remain as the primary challenges. A practical scale downed model is proposed for demonstration.

The proposed converter consists of a boost converter in parallel with a buckboost converter, which are operated in the positive half cycle and negative half cycle, respectively. Detailed analysis of the converter is carried out to obtain relations between the power, circuit parameters, and duty cycle of the converter. Based on the analysis, control schemes are proposed to operate the converter. Design guidelines are presented for selecting the converter component and control parameters. A self-starting circuit is proposed for independent operation of the converter.

EMS 2047. IMPROVING VOICE INTERACTION FOR OLDER PEOPLE USING AN ATTACHABLE GESTURE ROBOT ARCHITECTURE DIAGRAM

DESCRIPTION :

Dialogue interface with voice is one of the common methods of interaction between a user and a machine. This interface is believed to be easy for all people because auditory information doesnt require additional knowledge from users. However, having only auditory instructions sometimes causes misinterpretation of spatial information like locations and directions. This risk becomes large, especially with older people, because users mental abilities to manipulate images or patterns decrease with age. We support older peoples learning of spatial information by using an attachable gesture robot. Our robot consists of humanlike eyes and arms and is attached to the object. It supports older peoples mental manipulation of space with gestures during voice interaction. We designed and implemented both hardware and software on a robot and evaluated the method by training older people to learn its features. We compared two instructional methods that explained eight features on the vacuum, one method with voice and gestures and one with only voice. The results show that the subjects were more likely to remember two features if given training with gestures.

EMS 2061. DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT OF A GSM BASED VEHICLE THEFT CONTROL SYSTEM
This paper deals with the design & development of a theft control system for an automobile, which is being used to prevent / control the theft of a vehicle. The developed system makes use of an embedded system based on GSM technology. The designed & developed system is installed in the vehicle. An interfacing mobile is also connected to the microcontroller, which is in turn, connected to the engine. Once, the vehicle is being stolen, the information is being used by the vehicle owner for further processing. The information is passed onto the central processing insurance system, where by sitting at a remote place, a particular number is dialed by them to the interfacing mobile that is with the hardware kit which is installed in the vehicle. By reading the signals received by the mobile, one can control the ignition of the engine; say to lock it or to stop the engine immediately. Again it will come to the normal condition only after entering a secured password. The owner of the vehicle & the central processing system will know this secured password. The main concept in this design is introducing the mobile communications into the embedded system. The designed unit is very simple & low Cost. The entire designed unit is on a single chip. When the vehicle is stolen, owner of vehicle may inform to the central processing system, then they will stop the vehicle by just giving a ring to that secret number and with the help of SIM tracking knows the location of vehicle and informs to the local police or stops it from further movement.
