4. COGNATOS
1. Leia o texto abaixo:
LINGUISTICS
Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Someone who engages in this study is called a linguist.
Linguistics can be theoretical or applied.
Theoretical (or general) linguistics studies language structure (grammar), and meaning (semantics). The study
of grammar encompasses morphology (formation and alteration of words) and syntax (the rules that determine
the way words combine into phrases and sentences). Phonology, which is the system used to represent language
through abstract 'sounds', also forms part of this field.
Linguistics compares languages (comparative linguistics) and explores their histories, in order to find universal
properties of language and to account for its development and origins (historical linguistics). Slightly separate
from general linguistics is the sub-field of phonetics, the study of how sounds are produced and perceived.
Applied linguistics puts linguistic theories into practice in areas such as foreign language teaching, speech
therapy, translation and speech pathology.

(Título, subtítulo, autor, fonte, data, distribuição gráfica do texto, gráficos, tabelas,
pinturas, fotografias).
No contexto acadêmico é

estrutural desses grupos nominais. Exemplos: useless medical research (pesquisa
médica inútil); a lot of tragic accidents (muitos acidentes trágicos) based on comic
and ordinary situations (baseados em cômicas e comuns), etc.

FORMS OF LITERATURE
A. POETRY
A poem is a composition usually written in verse. Poems rely heavily on imagery, precise word choice,
and metaphor; they may take the form of measures consisting of patterns of stresses (metric feet)
or of patterns of different-length syllables (as in classical prosody); and they may or may not utilize
rhyme. Metre depends on syllables and on rhythms of speech; rhyme and alliteration depend on
words that have similar pronunciation. Some recent poets, such as E. E. Cummings, made extensive
use of words' visual form.
B. DRAMA
A play or drama offers another classical literary form that has continued to evolve over the years.
It generally comprises chiefly dialogue between characters, and usually aims at dramatic / theatrical
performance (see theatre) rather than at reading. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries,
opera developed as a combination of poetry, drama, and music. Nearly all drama took verse form until
comparatively recently.
Greek drama exemplifies the earliest form of drama of which we have substantial knowledge.
Tragedy, as a dramatic genre, developed as a performance associated with religious and civic
festivals, typically enacting or developing upon well-known historical or mythological themes.
Tragedies generally presented very serious Theme.
C. PROSE FICTION
Prose consists of writing that does not adhere to any particular formal structures (other than
simple grammar); "non-poetic writing," writing, perhaps.
Narrative fiction (narrative prose) generally favours prose for the writing of novels, short stories,
graphic novels, and the like. Singular examples of these exist throughout history, but they did not
develop into systematic and discrete literary forms until relatively recent centuries.
A novel consists simply of a long story written in prose, yet the form developed comparatively
recently. Icelandic prose sagas dating from about the 11th century bridge the gap between
traditional national verse epics and the modern psychological novel. In mainland Europe, the Spaniard

Cervantes wrote perhaps the first influential novel: Don Quixote, published in 1600. Earlier
collections of tales, such as Boccaccio's Decameron and Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, have
comparable forms and would classify as novels if written today.

Insomnia
Home Treatment
From Healthwise
Once you and your doctor have eliminated or treated underlying health problems contributing to your insomnia, there are many steps you
can take to break the cycle of poor sleep quality and daytime fatigue.
● Eliminate or limit caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol, and be sure to avoid using these substances late in the day or in the evening.
● Keep established bedtimes and wake times, 7 days a week.
● Reserve the bed for sleeping and sex; do your reading or TV watching in another room.
● Make exercise a regular part of your life, but don't do it within 3 or 4 hours of bedtime.
● Don't stay in bed longer than 8 hours, and try to avoid naps.
● Get plenty of sunlight in the outdoors, particularly later in the afternoon.
● Keep your bedroom quiet, dark, and cool. Try using a sleep mask and earplugs to help you sleep.
● Restrict nighttime liquid consumption to reduce the need to get up to urinate, but don't go to bed thirsty.
● Avoid uneven noise (sometimes a steady "white noise" such a fan running can help), being too hot or too cold, and the bright
lights of television or a computer screen during the late afternoon, evening, and night.

TEACHING
In education, teachers are those who help students or pupils learn, often in a school. The objective
is typically a course of study, lesson plan, or a practical skill, including learning and thinking skills.
The different ways to teach are often referred to as the teacher's pedagogy. When deciding what
teaching method to use, a teacher will need to consider students' background knowledge,
environment, and their learning goals as well as standardized curricula as determined by the relevant
authority.
Teaching may occur face-to-face or via some other modality, e.g. through distance education or
e-learning. Teaching can also be mixed with entertainment. When the term education is combined
with entertainment, the term edutainment is coined.

entertainment dá origem a palavra edutainment.

construir o significado do texto.

Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the
name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history
of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long
been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian
and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this
ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or
Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When
Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he
outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the
decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's
actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh
Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

GRUPOS NOMINAIS
sempre aparecem ANTES do núcleo. (financial scandals). Por isso é importante observar que, em
inglês, o núcleo será quase sempre a última palavra do grupo nominal.
Exemplos:
Algumas vezes, entretanto, o grupo nominal poderá incluir uma preposição (in, on, at, of, for etc...);
nesses casos, o núcleo será a palavra que precede a preposição. Exemplos:
• The colour of his hair.
• The funny picture on the blackboard.
The fear in her voice.
• a) IMF: International Monetary Fund
• b) EU: European Union
• c) UNO: United Nations Organization
• d) USA: United States of America
• e) AIDS: Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome

ROMANTICISM
Romanticism was an artistic and intellectual movement that originated in late 18th century Western
Europe. In part a revolt against aristocratic, social, and political norms of the Enlightenment period and a
reaction against the rationalization of nature, in art and literature it stressed strong emotion as a source of
aesthetic experience, placing new emphasis on such emotions as trepidation, horror, and the awe
experienced in confronting the sublimity of nature.
It elevated folk art, nature and custom, as well as arguing for an epistemology based on usage and custom.
It was influenced by ideas of the Enlightenment and elevated medievalism and elements of art and
narrative perceived to be from the medieval period. The name "romantic" itself comes from the term
"romance" which is a prose or poetic heroic narrative originating in medieval literature.
The ideologies and events of the French Revolution are thought to have influenced the movement.
Romanticism elevated the achievements of what it perceived as misunderstood heroic individuals and
artists that altered society. It also legitimized the individual imagination as a critical authority which
permitted freedom from classical notions of form in art. There was a strong recourse to historical and
natural inevitability in the representation of its ideas.

Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to find a princess, but she would have to be a real
princess. So he traveled all around the world to find one, however there was always something
wrong. There were princesses enough, but he could never be sure that they were real ones. There
was always something about them that was not quite right. So he came home again and was sad,
because he so much wanted to have a real princess.
One evening there was a terrible storm. It thundered and lightninged! The rain poured down! It was
horrible! Then there was a knock at the city gate, and the old king went out to open it.
A princess was standing outside. But my goodness, how she looked from the rain and the weather!
Water ran down from her hair and her clothes. It ran into the toes of her shoes and out at the
heels. And yet she said that she was a real princess.
"Well, we shall soon find that out," thought the old queen. But she said nothing, went into the
bedroom, took off all the bedding and laid a pea on the bottom of the bed. Then she took twenty
mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty featherbeds of eiderdown on top of the
mattresses.
That was where the princess was to sleep for the night. In the morning she was asked how she had
slept.

"Oh, horribly!" she said. "I hardly closed my eyes all night. Goodness knows what there was in the
bed! I was lying on something hard, so that I am black and blue all over my body. It is horrible!"
Now they could see that she was a real princess, because she had felt the pea right through the
twenty mattresses and the twenty featherbeds. Nobody but a real princess could be that sensitive.
So the prince took her for his wife, because now he knew that he had a real princess. And the pea
was put in the art gallery where it can still be seen, unless someone has taken it.

MARCADORES DISCURSIVOS
Words of transition, words of connection, transition devices, linking words ou discourse markers são

CULTURAL STUDIES
Cultural studies is an academic discipline popular among a diverse group of Anglo-American scholars. It
combines political economy, sociology, social theory, literary theory, media theory, film/video studies,
cultural anthropology, philosophy and art history/criticism to study cultural phenomena in industrial
societies. Cultural studies researchers often concentrate on how a particular phenomenon relates to matters
of ideology, race, social class, and/or gender. The term was coined by Stuart Hall and Dick Hebdige in
1964 when they founded the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies.
Cultural studies concerns itself with the meaning and practices of everyday life. Cultural practices comprise
the ways people do particular things (such as watching television, or eating out) in a given culture. In any
given practice, people use various objects (such as iPods or handguns). Hence, this field studies the
meanings and uses people attribute to various objects and practices. Recently, as capitalism has spread
throughout the world (a process called globalization), cultural studies has begun to critique local and global
forms of resistance to Western hegemony.
In a loosely related but separate usage, the phrase cultural studies sometimes serves as a rough synonym
for area studies, as a general term referring to the academic study of particular cultures in departments and
programs such as Islamic studies, Asian studies, African American studies, African studies, German
studies, et al.. Some researchers have traced the origins of cultural studies in universities to earlier
anthropological work such as the Folk Schools of Denmark in the 1920s, the Highlander School in North
America's Appalachia in the 1930s, and the Kamiriithu project in Kenya in the 1970s. However, strictly
speaking, cultural studies programs (such as the PhD program at George Mason University) are not
concerned with specific areas of the world so much as specific cultural practices.

Bastando apenas a seguir regrinhas elementares.
CIDADE = CITY
VELOCIDADE = VELOCITY
SIMPLICIDADE = SIMPLICITY
NATURALIDADE = NATURALITY
CAPACIDADE = CAPACITY
Regra 2
SIMPLIFICAÇÃO = SIMPLIFICATION
NAÇÃO = NATION
OBSERVAÇÃO = OBSERVATION
NATURALIZAÇÃO = NATURALIZATION
30
© 2022 ROCHA, A. L. C. Inglês Instrumental
SENSAÇÃO = SENSATION
Regra 3
Veja agora abaixo algumas
delas:
NATURALMENTE = NATURALLY
GENETICAMENTE = GENETICALLY
ORALMENTE = ORALLY
Regra 4
lugar coloque "ENCE". Eis algumas delas abaixo:
ESSÊNCIA = ESSENCE
REVERÊNCIA = REVERENCE
FREQÜÊNCIA = FREQUENCE
ELOQÜÊNCIA = ELOQUENCE
Regra 5
Veja alguns exemplos:
NATURAL = NATURAL
TOTAL = TOTAL
GENERAL = GENERAL
FATAL = FATAL
SENSUAL = SENSUAL

gramaticais.

■ Vamos analisar os exemplos a seguir:
■ Lots of people believe that God exists (Verbo)
■ Lots of people believe in the existence of God (Verbo + ence = substantivo)
disaprove, impossible, irregular, unidentified, non-smoker, amoral, decentralize.
■ Exemplo:
■ Cocaine, LSD and heroin are all illegal drugs/substances.
overtired, overwork, overweight.
■ Exemplo:
■ We all tend to overuse some expressions.
underdressed, underestimate, e underpaid.
■ Exemplo:
■ What´s that kid doing in the bar? He´s clearly underage.
■ Exemplo:
■ It appears that your luggage has been misdirected to a different airport.

LITERARY TECHNIQUE
A literary device may be used by works of literature in order to produce a specific effect on the
reader. Literary technique is distinguished from literary genre as military tactics are from military
strategy. Thus, though David Copperfield employs satire at certain moments, it belongs to the genre
of comic novel, not that of satire. By contrast, Bleak House employs satire so consistently as to
belong to the genre of satirical novel. In this way, the use of a technique can lead to the
development of a new genre, as was the case with one of the first modern novels, Pamela by Samuel
Richardson, which by using the epistolary technique gave birth to the epistolary novel.

● Author surrogate, a character who acts as the author's spokesman. Sometimes the character may
intentionally or unintentionally be an idealized version of the author. A well known variation is the Mary Sue
or Gary Stu.
● Back-story, the story "behind" or "before" the events being portrayed in the story being told; past
events or background for a character that can serve to color or add additional meaning to current
circumstances. Provides extra depth to the story by anchoring it to external events, real or imagined.
● Breaking the fourth wall, the author or a character addressing the audience directly (also known as
direct address). May acknowledge to the reader or audience that what is being presented is fiction, or may
seek to extend the world of the story to provide the illusion that they are included in it.
● Conceit is an extended metaphor, associated with metaphysical poetry, designed to push the limits
of the imagination in order to portray something indescribable.
● Deleted affair, telling of a romantic relationship, but not referred to in current story.
● Deus ex machina (God from the Machine), a plot device dating back to ancient Greek theater,
where the primary conflict is resolved through a means that seems unrelated to the story (i.e. a God
comes down out of nowhere and solves everything, saving the character from peril). In modern times, the
Deus ex machina is often considered a clumsy method, to be avoided in order not to frustrate readers or
viewers.
● Epic Theater, a technique popularized by 20th century playwright Bertolt Brecht, in which the
audience is "alienated" or "distanced" from the emotion of the play.
● Epiphany, is a literary work or section of a literary work presenting, usually symbolically, such a
moment of revelation and insight.
● Epistolary novel, novel in the form of letters exchanged between the characters. Classic examples
include Pamela by Samuel Richardson (1740), Humphry Clinker by Tobias Smollett (1771), Les Liaisons
dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos (1782) and Dracula by Bram Stoker (1897).
● False documents, fiction written in the form of, or about, apparently real, but actually fake
documents. Examples include Robert Graves' I, Claudius, a fictional autobiography of the Roman emperor.
The short stories of Jorge Luis Borges are often written as summaries or criticisms of books that in
actuality do not exist.
● Fictional fictional character, a character whose fictional existence is introduced within a larger work
of fiction, or a character in a story within a story. Early examples include Panchatantra and Arabian Nights.

The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories written by Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century
(two of them in prose, the rest in verse). The tales, some of which are originals and others not,
are contained inside a frame tale and told by a collection of pilgrims on a pilgrimage from
Southwark to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral.[1]
The Canterbury Tales are written in Middle English.
The characters, introduced in the General Prologue of the book, tell tales of great cultural
relevance. The first part of the prologue begins with “Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote”
indicating the start of spring and the end of a brutal winter. The themes of the tales vary, and
include topics such as courtly love, treachery, and avarice. The genres also vary, and include
romance, Breton lai, sermon, beast fable, and fabliau. Though there is an overall frame, there is
no single poetic structure to the work; Chaucer utilizes a variety of rhyme schemes and metrical
patterns, and there are as well two prose tales.

PROFESSOR
The meaning of the word professor (Latin: "one who claims publicly to be an expert") varies. In most
English-speaking countries, it refers to a senior academic who holds a departmental chair, generally as
head of the department, or a personal chair awarded specifically to that individual. In the United
States and Canada, individuals often use the term professor as a polite form of address for any
teacher, lecturer, or researcher employed by a college or university, regardless of rank. However,
gaining the title of professor is a huge milestone that very few people achieve. Professors are qualified
experts who may perform the following:
☺ conduct lectures and seminars in their field of study (i.e., they "profess"), such as the basic fields of
science or literature or the applied fields of engineering, music, medicine, law, or business;
☺ perform advanced research in their fields; in law, they may help change the law.
☺ provide pro bono community service, including consulting functions (such as advising government
and not-for-profit entities);
☺ train young or new academics (graduate students).
