I think there is a review of a Jam Session in there somewhere...

Before her Bairnsdale ballerina debacle, Madge from Altona was fairly keen on a young bicyclist by the name of Francis. His aim, apparently, was to do the Tour de France, Madge's aim, was of course to do something several degrees lower. She could never resist the offer of a Ploughman's lunch, especially if there were pickled onions and cold tongue involved. Whatever, she would have settled for the Tour de Francis, and very nearly did. That was in her early days, when she could still get into a corset, (although she preferred trousers).

Favourite Haunt
Their favourite haunt was The Stuffed Parrot, which at that time was in full swing. The music was hot, and the jazzeurs were, by their own estimation, somewhat cool cats: they took to affecting a foppish look, wearing a slouched beret, thick black framed glasses, and smoking cheap American cigarettes. Of course, the good folk of Altona do not take kindly to that sort of thing, so they also learnt to play every tune very fast, and run even faster. Especially if Madge was in the audience.

Ah Yes!
But I digress. The Leinster, ah yes, that was what I was getting to. Got there Sunday arvo actually. Frank and Brian starting off, with a bit of key from meself, and sax from Keef. We took a tour through the Jack the Lad chartbook, Sam came in and played some drums, and we all managed to massacre Bernie's Tune, before blithely ignoring the fact that Chega De Saudade has two pages Captain Chaos put us right on that one.

Miss Sonya
Don wielded the axe for a while and Miss Sonya took out the tonsils and waltzed through a coupla ballads as you do , then as the headcount/chaos factor mounted, Sam whipped out his organ. We eventually got the life ban from the Leinster Lizard Lounge and Cabaret Club lifted, by explaining that it was a Hammond; and stepping over the prostrate form of a deeply disappointed Hortense, or not as the case may be, resumed with what is sometimes laughingly referred to as music for a splendid little session. I might try that again next week. Seeya there? FOH Colin Garrett playing

Friday night at the Leinster

As sometimes happens, nobody turned up for a while except Frank and myself. So Frank fired up his guitar and we enjoyed ourselves with a few quiet ballads. Then they started to arrive. Ted jumped on the keys which relegated Frank to the bass. Ted came up with the crazy idea of playing some more difficult pieces. We almost got Solar right. Tim and friend appeared and he took over the horn section for a while. Sachigo walked in with a guitar on his back almost immediately followed by Taariq carrying a guitar case but quickly was assigned to the drum kit until Glen took over for a while. Frank needed a rest so Taariq started playing bass until he finally had the guitar in his hands towards the end of the evening.

Buddy appeared for a quick social visit and Keith and reeds arrived later on. One of the joys of a jam session is that you never know who is going to appear. This night we were lucky to have Stewart who was visiting from NSW take over the keys in a very competent manner. We also had a number of very satisfied listeners. Along with the regulars (Marg, Alan, Di and co) a couple from on holidays from Tasmania and two gentlemen who were heading to Bennetts Lane (but decided that the grassroots jazz was a better option) were very complimentary of the proceedings. Hope to catch up with you next Friday. Col

Pres never played anything that didnt mean anything. Everything made sense. I dont care what it was, what the song was, it didnt have to be exciting but you beleive me, if you listen to it it told a story, beautiful stories. Buddy Tait tenor saxophonist in 1984

The Jam Sessions

The jams feature a blend of accomplished musicians and those beginning their jamming careers. A great opportunity to drop in, meet other musicians, blow your heart out on your favourite tune or kick back and listen in. The music may be good, bad or bebop, swing, blues, latin or lousy anything can happen and often does! All are welcome. Bring charts, instruments, voices.

The Blues
The one about the difference between a blues muso and a jazz muso. The one plays three chords to thousands while the other plays thousands of chords to three people. But looking at some of the charts of 12 bar blues I have counted up a lot more than 3 chords. So what is the right form for the blues? Tips for Singers from a Fellow Musician

We understand that singers, who have had very little experience with performing with a group, may sometimes need help and we give it freely. If you can provide three copies of a specific arrangement thats great, otherwise, you need to sing your tunes in the standard form. Trying to do one without the other may make you very disappointed with the outcome. Also, if the performance was a train wreck, you will find that nobody died in the process. It is sort of in the nature of a jam session but dont blame the other musicians until after you talk to them and try to pin point what actually went wrong. FM

Keyboard Player Wanted

Just wondering if there is a keyboard player aged between 20-40 years who may be interested in joining our band? Would be in it for the love of music, and not for money. Need quite good reading skills and comfortable with jazz as well as pop music. We play at Dizzy's once a month and any other gigs that come along, although we are looking at heading towards doing weddings and corporate gigs. Chord booklets are provided, but bring your own melodies and/or words for vocals if you need them. No audience, just a fun jam playing classic, old-style jazz.
