Principle of operation
LFA-M consists of two resistor cord cable sections. These sections are connected in such a way that produce three discharge modules 1, 2, 3. Resistor cord sections are connected to end terminals through inner spark gaps 1, 2, 3, 4. Under lightning overvoltage impulse these gaps are flashed over and upper cable section resistor cord with R resistance carry high potential U to the center of the lower cable section surface. Similarly, the lower cable section resistor cord with resistance R carry high potential 0 to the center of the upper cable section surface. Thus full voltage U is applied simultaneously to each discharge module and conditions for simultaneous development of surface discharges that under flashover of respective modules producing a single long flashover channel for all discharge modules 1,2,3 are provided.

Installation
In case it is necessary to provide guaranteed protection against any lightning impacts including direct lightning strike each tower of the OHL protected section should be equipped with three LFA-M modular-type arrester, one per phase. In this case it is necessary to provide low (10 Ohm at most) grounding resistance only for three nearest towers of substation approach zone. According to lightning protection requirements the rest of towers need no grounding. If according to feasibility study it is reasonable to protect only separate OHL sections from direct lightning strike, the protection should be of the following arrangement. Each tower phase of this section
should be equipped with three modular-type LFA-M arresters. Two extreme towers of the protected OHL section should be grounded and grounding resistance should not exceed 10 Ohm. If for objective reasons this requirement fails it should be compensated by additional grounding of one more or some other adjacent extreme towers of this section. Other towers of this section need no special grounding.

The base of multi-chamber arresters (MCA), including MCIA, is the MCS comprises a large
number of electrodes mounted on a silicon rubber length. Holes drilled between the electrodes and going through the length act as miniature gas discharge chambers. When a lightning overvoltage impulse is applied to the arrester it breaks down gaps between electrodes. Discharges between electrodes take place inside chambers of a very small volume; the resulting high pressure drives spark discharge channels between electrodes to the surface of the insulating body and hence outside, into the air around the arrester. A blow-out action and an elongation of inter-electrode channels lead to an increase of total resistance of all channels, i. e. that of the arrester, which limits the lightning overvoltage impulse current.
As the the mechanism of spark discharge quenching in MCSs is similar to that of arc discharge quenching in a tube expulsion arrester. A substantial difference is that an arc keeps burning inside a tube arrester fairly long, up to 10 ms (i. e. 10,000 s). It burns out the walls of the gasgenerating tube so that thermal breakdown gases blow the discharge channel out. With zero quenching occurring in a MCS, the arc starts in workstation-quenching chambers and ends when most of it gets blown out. The chamber material does not generate gases; the blowout happens owing to expansion of the discharge channel alone, so erosion of the chamber walls is negligible.
Impulse quenching, which lasts a few microseconds or dozens of microseconds, involves next to no erosion even after numerous firings of MCS.

Installation
MCIA application instead of standard insulators permits to provide protection of overhead lines of any voltage rating so as the higher voltage rating the higher number of insulators in a string and thus the higher rated voltage the higher arc quenching capability of a MCIA string. MCIA application on OHL makes overhead protection cable unnecessary resulting in reduction of tower height, weight and tower cost and OHL cost on the whole and providing reliable lightning protection.
