Important Dates in August

August 115 - During the first fifteen days of August the Orthodox Church observes the Dormition Fast in preparation for the Feast of the Dormition, which is the falling asleep in the Lord of Mary, the Theotokos. During this time, we will celebrate the Paraklesis Service, a special service of supplication to the Virgin Mary on Wednesday evenings. August 6 - Feast of the Transfiguration - On this day the Church celebrates the day Jesus Took Peter, James, and John to a mountain and was transfigured before them. According to the Gospel of Matthew, this occurs just after Peters confession in response to Jesus question, Who do you say that I am? Peter responds, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God (Mt. 16:16). As if to confirm these words of Peter, Jesus takes these disciples to the high mountain and there He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as light (Mt. 17:2). Along with Jesus, Moses and Elijiah appeared on the mountain showing the disciples that Jesus is the fulfillment of the law of Moses and the teaching of the prophets. He is the long awaited Messiah and the hope of all people. August 15 - Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos - On this day the Orthodox Church celebrates the death of Mary, the Theotokos. According to the tradition of the Church, when Mary died all of the Apostles were brought together to attend her funeral. They solemnly carried her body from the home where she died to her tomb. When they returned to the tomb a few days later, they discovered that her body was no longer in the tomb. She had been taken bodily to heaven into the kingdom of God. As Christians, we believe that this is what will take place when we die. For those who have submitted their lives to the will of God, death is no the end, but a rebirth into a new life. Mary is the first to experience the joy of the Resurrection in her body. This is what awaits all people and is revealed as a certainty in the Dormition of Mary, the Mother of God. August 29 - The Beheading of John the Baptist - On this day the Orthodox Church celebrates the death of John the Baptist. According to Scripture (Matthew 14:1-12), John the Baptist was beheaded by Herod Antipas who was convinced to do so when Herodias daughter danced for him and he agreed to give her whatever she asked. She asked for Johns head on a platter, which was granted.
