GREEN ECONOMY COALITION NEWS APRIL 2010 Dear Colleagues Please find an update on Green Economy Coalition activities

in April 2010. Our Core Script Last month we reported on our progress on drafting the Green Economy Coalition 'Core Script', which consists of three parts: (1) Analysis of Challenges; (2) Glimpses of the Future, (3) Transition Roadmap; and we attached the first part Analysis of the Challenges for your review and suggestions (see News March 2010). This month we attach a first draft of the Glimpses of the Future a collection of short case studies to provide brief examples of tomorrows world, intended to help define the meaning of a green and inclusive economy, and communicate value-based, positive solutions. We intend to make the Core Script available on the Green Economy Coalition website at the end of May. Glimpses of the Future - Selection of Case Studies A huge thank you to WWF International for inspiring and catalyzing this first draft! Efforts have been made to select case studies from both North and South; from civil society, business and governments as well as innovative partnerships between these groups; to ensure that they address environmental, social as well as economic criteria; and to capture something of the enabling conditions which allowed them to evolve. We intend to populate the Glimpse of the Future collection with new case studies on a regular basis, and make it available on the Green Economy Coalition website. Invitation to Contribute to the Glimpses of the Future Collection The Glimpses of the Future case studies are not perfect! We invite your feedback on the examples and additional material from your own experiences. Please send suggestions and case studies, of no more 250 words maximum, a digital photograph (not included in the attached document) as well as references, to sally.jeanrenaud@iucn.org . 4th Green Economy Coalition Letter to G20 Summit There are two G20 Heads of State Summits this year: 4th Summit: Toronto, Canada 26-27 June, http://g20.gc.ca/ 5th Summit: Seoul, S. Korea 11-12 November. The theme of the 4th G20 Summit in June is: 'Recovery and New Beginnings', and leaders will focus on the fragile recovery from the economic and financial crisis, the implementation of its previous commitments, as well as laying the foundation for sustainable and balanced growth. The Green Economy Coalition proposed to send a 4th letter to the G20 Summit in June. Preliminary conversations with coalition members have generated a number of ideas for the letter:

Message that a green economy is critical to 'new beginnings', and that it provides a common solution to multiple challenges of climate change, poverty, unemployment, energy, food and water security.

Highlight that biodiversity is a crucial element of the green economy to support the International Year of Biodiversity in 2010 (this would also provide an opportunity to support TEEB messaging). Indicate how all countries and sectors have a stake in the green, biodiverse economy, thus representing interests of labour, development, consumer, environmental, economic, accountability groups. Key 'asks' include removal of subsidies, and investment in green sectors to address poverty, generate new jobs, and to protect our life support systems - in order to lay the foundation for sustainable and balanced growth.

The GEC will take responsibility for drafting a letter and circulating a letter to institutional focal points in May. IIED is willing to help prepare a Press Release by early June, to correspond with the dispatch of a letter in mid June. Any further suggestions or comments on a 4th Green Economy Coalition letter to the G20 are welcome and should be forwarded to sally.jeanrenaud@iucn.org National Green Economy Coalition Dialogues Good progress is being made on planning the National Green Economy Dialogues with Development Alternatives in India and IIED who are taking the lead on this work stream. The One Planet MBA will be global in outlook, developing leaders and managers capable of running organisations in a culturally diverse, resource-constrained world, influenced by radically different values and concerns from those of the recent past. Graduates will acquire all the traditional business skills but will demonstrate a fully comprehensive grasp of global sustainability issues and other cultural values.
