Marking guide for CW2 POM 2010/2011 semester two

1. Using the Knowledge you have gained about planning function, comment on the practice of planning in select designs ltd. (10 marks- 3marks@manager and 1 for intro.)

(Definition of planning) The way planning was carried out (practiced/exercised) In select designs ltd., kept on changing with changes in the Top management. It was different during Mr. Olupots tenure. It changed when Mr. Jack took over and also took on a different shape during Mrs. Jacks tenure.

E.g during Olupots tenure, Olupot laid down plans all by himself and ordered others to perform them. I.e. there was a devide between planning and implementation. Its probable that many mistakes were made during implementation of the plans since workers did not fully own the plans Olupot crafted. Olupot used not to adequately analyse the business environment which made him to come up with inappropriate decisions. It is possible that the decisions he took do not add value to customers (the same for Mr. and Mrs. Jack)

2. Suggest actions that should be taken to revive the growth in company sales (10 marks for five well explained points)

Workers welfare should be increased to improve their commitment and combat the threat of employee turnover Staff should be involved in decision making for better decisions to be adopted The Top management must listen to staff interests and address them so as to build their commitment Current leadership must benchmark, Mr. Kamana and Mr. Jacks leadership behaviours like talking with operational staff freely Be fair in reward Publically criticizing workers where they have gone wrong should not be on first offence

3. Comment on the leadership styles adopted by Mr. Olupot, Mr. Jack, and Mrs. Jack in line with the
managerial grid (10 marks- 3marks for each and 1 mark for introduction).

Mr. olupot: He used the Task oriented (Authoritarian) when he fired staff without asking the to explain/defend their action. Probably they had stomach pain Note: Students who much the reason above with OLupots behavior of not propally scanning the environment can talk of The impoverished style

Mr. Jack: He used Team leadership because he cared for workers and work. He visted workers when they were sick, played and jocked with them. Although he entrusted kagwa with running tasks, he always came in when things seemed to go wrong. This is the ideal leadership style according to the managerial grid. It enabled Mr. jack to reduce employee turnover, built company image and improved production though delegating authority to appropriate people.

Mrs. Jack: She used the impoverished leadership style. She cared less for both the work and the workers. She suspended talking with workers because they smell bad. She delegated carrying out of tasks to Sebabi and seems not to be making follow up. She has even failed to meet her promise to the workers of keeping the benefits Mr. Jack used to give workers.

4. Suppose you are Mrs. Jacks friend, what advice would you give her in an effort to ensure that she avoids mistakes made by President Olupot so as to grow company sales?

Dont publically criticize staff for poor performance but publically applaud them upon good performance Mrs. Jack should restore the benefits of workers as she had promised (this is in line with expectancy theory) She should bench mark her husbands leadership style that featured free interaction with staff and participating in implementation She should learn some common words in the language familiar to staff. This enables building of social relationships Mrs. Jack should be equitable to staff when giving rewards. He should learn to allow staff to defend themselves before he takes actions/decisions like firing them, he should not fire people the first time they make an errors She should revive the practice of holding meetings so as to get peoples inputs and reactions to proposed decisions. This will enable better decision making

5. Sketch a suitable formal Organization Chart for select designs ltd. to depict the relationship of the current staff base.
