In the first semester the emphasis has been on writing paragraphs with good, detailed support. Since a paragraph develops one idea, the topics being developed are necessarily quite limited. In this semester the students learn to write an essay, the course Writing Composition presents an integrated programme of writing for high-intermediate students of English as a second or foreign language. It combines extensive practice in rhetorical strategies and techniques. Course objectives: To introduce the skills required to describe reports (bar charts, pie charts and tables), by interpreting general and specific information, and comparing and contrasting data. To introduce students to the skills required to structure, organize and present ideas in acceptable different types of essay formats. To prepare students for the different types of letters (request, complaint, etc.) that they need in real life situation Course Content Describing bar charts, pie charts and tables Comparing and contrasting data on charts or tables Writing an argumentative or persuasive essay Writing an advantages and disadvantages essay Writing a compare and or contrast essay Writing a classification essay Writing a cause and effect essay Writing business letters Instructional Techniques Lecture and discussion Explanation and illustration Group and individual work Evaluation techniques The students will be evaluated in different ways. 60 marks from final examination, 15 marks from classroom performance/presentation, 20 marks from assignments and 5
