EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 31, 2011

OUR DEEPEST NEEDS

The word of God serves up a tremendous feast for us today. Isaiah beckons all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord for satisfaction. The psalmist cries out, The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs (Psalm 145:16). Saint Paul tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Finally, in the Gospel, we hear the story of the miraculous feeding of over five thousand people from a mere five loaves and two fish. Most of us have our material needs met on a day-to-day basis. These scriptures, nevertheless, have much to say to the contemporary believer. We must ask ourselves, Where are my deepest hungers? Where are my thirsts? After material needs are satisfied and, in some cases, over-satisfied, many people still experience a deep longing for spiritual balance and well-being. As the loaves and fish are multiplied in todays Gospel, perhaps our prayer can be a longing for the satisfaction of the deepest needs that only God can fill.

2011 SUMMER MISSION CO-OP APPEAL - JULY 30 & 31

For the benefit of Our Sisters and Brothers in the Mission Fields of our Church Mission Appeal Weekends are a special opportunity for US to experience the universality of the Church. This weekend our guest is Father Tomasz Grabara, MSF from the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Holy Family. Founded in 1895, the Missionaries of the Holy Family have over 900 priests and brothers who serve families, foster vocations, and draw people to the Gospel. The Missionaries of the Holy Family have been in Papua New Guinea for nine years. The country is big, vast, and mostly bush areas. You need a lot of time to move from place to place, and, in some cases, a plane is necessary. The people are very friendly and the Good News has been preached to them for only 100 years in costal regions and 50 years in Highlands Provinces. Our primary goal has always been to bring the Word of God to all the people and to administer sacraments. This is not an easy task especially when you take into consideration the distance between villages and the very bad road conditions. Each mission station and every outstation has a catechist a lay man or woman who helps the priest. Great effort is put into education and health services. A network of Catholic schools and health aid posts were established in rural locations so that people may have help to meet their basic human needs. However, almost 50% of children do not go to school; parents do not have money to pay school fees; and the death rate among children is still very high. Unfortunately, the government is not able to do much to improve the situation. Even though Papua New Guinea is quite rich in natural resources (gas, oil, gold), most of the people remain very poor. The Roman Missal Changes:

The Roman Missal Translation Lost (and Found) in Translation
As we continue to explore the new Roman Missal translation, we turn our attention to the realities of translating. Traveling to a foreign country where a different language is spoken can be daunting. Finding the correct words and phrases to maneuver through airports, train stations, restaurants, and market places can range from comedic to frustrating. Often, things get lost in translation. It is important to remember that the Churchs universal liturgical language is Latin. This means that, in order for the new Roman Missal translation to be implemented all over the world, it needs to comfortably and appropriately find a home in numerous vernacular languages. For English-speaking countries, this task began shortly after the 3rd edition of the Roman Missal was issued in 2000. The Roman Missal translation that we will be implementing in Advent 2011, however, has a very different flavor from the translation of the second edition that weve been using these last few decades. So, whats different about this translation and, more specifically, why does it sound different? What will be happening to the words we use at mass? In the first years of the renewal of the liturgy after the Second Vatican Council, the art of translating the Latin liturgical texts was just developing. The very first formal guidelines for translating Latin texts, contained in a document issued in 1969 (Comme le Prvoit, Instruction on the translation of liturgical texts for celebrations with a congregation), followed a principle of translation that is known as dynamic equivalence. The main characteristic of this principle is that, when translating from one language to another, what is emphasized is the meaning, or the message of the text. So, under this principle, the English would not necessarily be a literal, wordfor-word translation of the Latin.

The art of translating liturgical texts, however, is an organic art that has developed since the 1960s. For example, at one time we crossed ourselves saying, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, instead of Holy Spirit. Even more recently, some will recall when, at the end of the first or second reading, the lector said, This is the Word of the Lord, instead of the current phrase, The Word of the Lord. New Ideas about the Roman Missal Translation The developing nature of the art of translating liturgical texts became evident in 2001 when the Vatican issued new guidelines (Liturgiam Authenticam, Instruction on the use of vernacular languages in the publication of the books of the Roman Liturgy) to guide the Roman Missal translation of the third edition, which Pope John Paul II had promulgated that same year. These guidelines follow a principle of translation known as formal equivalence. The main characteristic of this principle is that, when translating from one language to another, what is emphasized is literal fidelity, rendering a word-for-word translation of the original source text. In practical terms, the English used in the new Roman Missal translation will sound different from the current translation mainly because the methods and principles of translation that are used have changed. As we prepare to implement the new Roman Missal translation in Advent 2011, we experience the excitement of discovering new words and phrases that adhere to the original Latin text more faithfully. We hope that these new words, previously lost in translation, will enable us to communicate our praise and worship of a good and gracious God, whose glory transcends all words.

The Preface: Thanksgiving The preface of the Mass has been called a poem, the cry of joy and recognition, the song of the world discovering its salvation . . . the certitude of faith making hope spring forth (Philippe Bguerie, quoted in The Mass, Lucien Deiss, The Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN, 1992, p. 70). The preface takes up the last words of the dialogue, and expresses briefly and simply why we are grateful, why it is right and just to give thanks and praise to God. On feast days, the preface sings of the specific mystery or saint we celebrate; in Ordinary Time, the Sunday and weekday prefaces express our gratitude for Gods gift of the Son, Jesus Christ, in whom we have redemption and newness of life. The prefaces offer a succinct account of what God has done for us in Christ; they express the mystery of faith, always relating it to us, to our lives. By his birth we are reborn, we hear in Preface IV for Sundays in Ordinary Time. By his suffering we are freed from sin. By his rising from the dead we rise to everlasting life.
