TechNotes

Meyer Sounds TechNotes are a series of simple, single-page descriptions of standard Meyer loudspeaker arrays, providing customers with a representative indication of loudspeaker array performance. TechNotes can answer most of the common questions which arise in the initial stages of a practical system specification. Note that the arrays covered in these documents are not complete system designs, but the building blocks from which complete systems may be realized.

Normalization
All measurements are made after the array has been normalized with a Meyer Sound CP-10 Complementary Phase Parametric Equalizer. The normalization process corrects frequency-dependent amplitude variations within the usable bandwidth that occur as a result of array geometry.

Base Specifications
The Base Specifications section of each TechNote describes the performance of the array in the most general and familiar terms. The Frequency Range specification denotes the usable bandwidth of the system. The frequency response of the array is measured on the primary axis. The upper and lower -3 dB (half power) points in the frequency response are then taken to define the usable bandwidth. The Weight specification is cabinet weight only, and does not include hanging hardware, rigging fixtures, cable weight and so on.

Measurement Notes
The Measurement Notes describe how the array specifications were obtained. Most measurements are taken using Meyer Sounds SIM System II. To determine Coverage Angle, we measure the full-bandwidth frequency response of the array on- and off-axis, in 10-degree steps. We visually smooth the curves to eliminate fine spectral structure (in practice, the smoothing is merely conceptual), and determine at what angle off axis the response over the stated bandwidth appears on average to be 6 dB below the on-axis level. Maximum SPL measurements are taken using a Brel & Kjaer Model 2209 sound pressure level meter with 1/2" capsule and set to Peak Hold mode (unweighted), the loudspeaker being driven by gated pink noise.

Coverage and SPL

The Coverage and SPL table shows how the array may be adjusted to satisfy various requirements. Splay angles are given with reference to the high-frequency horns primary axis (for convenience, vertical splay angles are shown as the angle between adjacent cabinet faces, which equals the horn-axis angle). All coverage angle specifications are referred to the axis between the splayed cabinets, which is deemed to be the primary axis of the array. Continuous and peak SPL are as measured on this axis. Continuous SPL is measured using a Brel & Kjaer Model 2209 sound pressure level meter with 1/2" capsule and set to Slow mode (unweighted).

Standard System Block Diagram

The Standard System Block Diagram shows the minimum number of Control Electronics Units (CEUs), power amplifiers and equalizers that are required to operate the array, and how these components are connected. For operational specifics, refer also to the Operating Instructions for the loudspeaker and CEU. Power amplifiers are specified as Type 1, 2 or 3. These designations refer to Meyer Sound power amplifier specifications, which define the safe power limits and desired performance characteristics of amplifiers for use with our products. Detailed specifications may be obtained from the Meyer Sound Technical Support Department. SIM patch points are also shown. These are the points in the system signal flow where SIM System II is to be connected to measure the system response.

Increased Control System Block Diagram

Where appropriate, an Increased Control block diagram is included. This diagram illustrates system connections that allow for fine adjustments to the arrays component levels in order to accommodate particular venue requirements and/or steer the arrays coverage pattern. The decision to use the Increased Control configuration should be made by a Meyer Sound Dealer or Distributor, a qualified consultant, or by Meyer Sounds Technical Support Department in collaboration with the client.
