Meyer Sounds TechNotes are a series of simple, single-page descriptions of standard Meyer loudspeaker arrays, providing customers with a representative indication of loudspeaker array performance. TechNotes can answer most of the common questions which arise in the initial stages of a practical system specification. Note that the arrays covered in these documents are not complete system designs, but the building blocks from which complete systems may be realized.
Normalization
All measurements are made after the array has been normalized with a Meyer Sound CP-10 Complementary Phase Parametric Equalizer. The normalization process corrects frequency-dependent amplitude variations within the usable bandwidth that occur as a result of array geometry.
Base Specifications
The Base Specifications section of each TechNote describes the performance of the array in the most general and familiar terms. The Frequency Range specification denotes the usable bandwidth of the system. The frequency response of the array is measured on the primary axis. The upper and lower -3 dB (half power) points in the frequency response are then taken to define the usable bandwidth. The Weight specification is cabinet weight only, and does not include hanging hardware, rigging fixtures, cable weight and so on.
Measurement Notes
The Measurement Notes describe how the array specifications were obtained. Most measurements are taken using Meyer Sounds SIM System II. To determine Coverage Angle, we measure the full-bandwidth frequency response of the array on- and off-axis, in 10-degree steps. We visually smooth the curves to eliminate fine spectral structure (in practice, the smoothing is merely conceptual), and determine at what angle off axis the response over the stated bandwidth appears on average to be 6 dB below the on-axis level. Maximum SPL measurements are taken using a Brel & Kjaer Model 2209 sound pressure level meter with 1/2" capsule and set to Peak Hold mode (unweighted), the loudspeaker being driven by gated pink noise.
