reach them in the summer. post. We are also on Instagram, YouTube and Twitter.

There is a little bit of science to why the mid-afternoon Happy Gardening, Sal
sun is so hot. The rays of the morning and late afternoon
sun are coming through our atmosphere at an angle. The
closer the sun is to the horizons, the more atmosphere
that the rays must pass through which causes some of the
sun's heat to be filtered out. This causes the rays to lose
some of its intensity.

The mid-afternoon sun rays pass through much less

atmosphere, so we are getting more of a direct, less
filtered hit.

In the late afternoon, the rays are not as hot, however the
midafternoon rays have already heated the earth, so you
are getting a double whammy. Overnight, the earth cools,
so you have less heat in the morning from the earth, and
also from the sun.

Your goal in the summertime is less heat, but your goal

in the winter is more heat, so do the opposite. Let your
herbs get the afternoon and late evening sun in the winter
to make them happy campers. Bring your herbs in if it is
going to freeze, except for your mints. You can hardly
kill mint.

A few other tips... Less is more with your herbs. Let

them slightly dry out between watering. They also don't
need much, if any fertilizer.

Harvesting

Harvest your herbs as you need them. As long as you

don’t pull the whole root up, your plant will continue to
flourish. Use scissors to snip what you need.

You can dry them or use them freshly picked, and you
can also freeze them.

Use a spray bottle to keep your seedlings wet until they

germinate.

Each Month, after completing a task, be sure to move

your Sal’s Task Completed Sticker to the top of your
page.
