Eco Friendly Religious Centre

Kaluwella Buddhist Centre located in middle of the Galle city and implements many social services for the society.Foronedaymanypeoplearecomingtogetthe serviceofthecentreandthosepeoplehadtosufferfrom the waste and that problem is a huge problem. Under the Make Galle Green Bio Energy City HELPO was constructedbiogasunitintheBuddhistCentre.

Now they use this for more than 06 hours for the day and their waste problem was solved and the best thing is the religious centre burn 3.75m3 CH4 burn daily and monthlytheyburn112.5m3 monthly.Thisisverygoodeffectfortheenvironmentand beforeMunicipalhadtocomedailytocollectthewasteofthecentre.

Earning process of Tangalle Prison by the waste

Tangalle Prison is involving earning process by the waste. Within the last two years HELPOconstructedonebiogasunitatTangallePrison.Prisonauthorityappointedone team for the biogas unit and manages the unit. Latest update is the prisoners painted veryspecialpaintswhicharerelatedtothebiogasunit.

Through this they expect to aware the visitors about the biogas and environment protectionprocessoftheprison.Theartworksaremadebyprisonersandwhattheyfelt about the biogas. This is much important event of the prison of the country because theyalsoinvolvedprotectingtheenvironment.Dailymorethan1000peoplearecoming totheprisonandtheyallseethisstrongandcolorfulmessageeventheyrequestmore details about the biogas units. They have painted about how to separate waste in a proper way and international color code system, major parts of the biogas unit and organicfarmingbythechemicalfreefertilizer. Tangalle Prison was much suffering from the waste and many people complain against to us because we donthaveenoughspacetodumpthewasteproperly.Situationwasmuchcriticalbutwiththesupportofthe HELPOwecouldabletobuildbiogasunitwiththecontributionofprisonerstoo.Nowwasteisresourcefor usandweearnfromwasteandearlyweexpendmuchmoneyforfirewoodandwehadtodestroytheforest togetfirewoodbutnowwedontneedtodothatandweconvertedasanenvironmentfriendlyplace.Even weexpecttocultivatefromthebioslurry.Nowweearnfromourownwaste.

Survey about waste management
The organization expects to start a survey about solid waste management and energyusebythe people of Trincomalee city. We have planned to calculate about those figures and data about biogas consumption and waste amountthatfeedtothebiogasunit.

This event will be funded by the UNEP and through this we expect to measure aboutthecurrentsituationofthecityand current waste management process. This evenalsolinkwiththeacademiatoo.Our finaleffortiscomparethebeforesituation andaftersituationofthecityandthrough tat expect to implement very success programwithintheTrincomaleecityarea that can replicate to other city.

Installation of Domestic Biogas Unit

Ms.M.HIndraniisacitizenoftheGallecityandshehasthreekids. Shewasmuchsufferin gfromthewasteproblemandenergyproblem too.Shehasagoodbusinessthatismakingshorteatsandthatisthe majorincome.SheoughtthedomesticbiogasunitfromtheHELPO under loan basis. The capacity of the biogas unit is 8m3 and the capacityisenoughforherdailyworks.Ms.Indraniishappywiththis new situation because she can get more profit from what she made becausenowshegetstheenergyforfreeandfromherwasteandshe convertedtheecofriendlyenergysource.

PrevioustimeshehadtoexpendmorethanRs.2,000forenergyneedbut nowthatis profitforher.Sheisrepayingtheloanmonthlybasiswithsmallinterest.Accordingto thecalculationsshecanrecovertheexpendcostwithinoneyear. We implemented two biogas units with the support of CITYNET in Don Bosco Tsunami Housing Scheme and Don Bosco Training Centre. The both Biogas units are properly working and we could able to reduce much waste fro the biogas units. We reduced the times that collect the waste from the biogas location and that is reducing themunicipalcosttoo.IbelievethisisoneofgoodmechanismforMunicipalCouncils thatcanstartandweexpecttoexpandthisprocesstomanysectorsofthecityandwe aretryingtozerowastecityconcept.

Eco Friendly harvest from Galle

Now people are using the bio fertilizer for cultivation. In Galle Athiligoda village there is a farm that uses biogas organicfertilizertocultivationandformakingsmallplants. Theygettheorganicfertilizerofbiogasforthispurpose.The nameisNilkethyayaandtheycouldabletoprovidemany seeds and plants for the people and other institutions. Farmerhasgoodincomeandmanypeopledailycometogettheplantsandseedsfrom themthereasonisthoseplantsandseedsarechemicalfree.

HELPO provided the liquid fertilizer for them. We believe this is one of good step because through this we can give a strong message about the important of the liquid fertilizer and its effectiveness. The price of the bottle is Rs.50.00. Early those farmers usedchemicalfertilizerforcultivationbutnowtheyuseorganicfertilizerforcultivation and that is one of step to increase the quality of the products. HELPO provides the organic fertilizer continue to this farmer. As an organization that dedicates to protect the environment we promote this kind of eco friendly activities. Jaffna is one of developing city of the country after war. HELPO constructedmodelbiogasprogram in Jaffna city and in a school. Muththu Thambi Vidyalaya is located in Thirunelwely of Jaffna district.

HELPO released the biogas hand book about biogas. This is user friendly book and that book shows how to use the biogas in a proper way. There is a huge gap of the hand book and we published one book.

Theincludepointsofthisbook Whatisthebiogas What are the effects to the environment using by this bio gasunit. Thepartsofthebiogasunit. What are the benefits that user cangetbyusingthisbiogasunit. How the unit control and continue. What are the things that can dumptothebiogasunit? We have given this book for every biogas user and they have a guideline now how to use this and we expect to establish user friendly biogas system in country. Not even that we have included some matrix that people can realize the size and capacity that they need with matchingthegroundlevelsituation.

In the Don Bosco Tsunami village succeed their necessaries by using more than 02 hours for cooking at one day. One family use 10 hours peraonedayand300hourspera month. Now they can save their moneyandtheycandotheirhouse hold things and other things very quicklybyusingthebiogasunit.

In the Don Bosco Traning centre they use more than 3 and half hoursperadayand105hoursper a month. Previous time they used LP gas for cooking purpose and now they can reduce 30%. So, the biogasunitwaspavedthewayfor them to save their money. As the raw materials they use pig dung and urine including the wet garbageoftheTrainingcentre.

Now they can reduce the fire wood usage in 50% and also stop the make fire by the using of polythene and plastics. Now they win by the waste and that is a good model to all cities. Not even that they started the organic cultivation from the liquid fertilizer. The school uses the biogas more than 03 hours and they could able to stop the emission of CH4 to air they save daily 2.25m3 Methane gasandmonthlythatis67.5.

With base of the experience at schoolothersschoolcanapplythis methodtotheirinstitutions.Today theyhaveenoughbiogasforsuing their cooking purpose and they dont need to cut the fire wood becausetheyearnfromtheirwaste too.
