Ambassador John Negroponte Joins IRD Board Advisory Council

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUST 3, 2011 CONTACT: MELISSA PRICE 571-366-1596 PRESS@IRD-DC.ORG ARLINGTON, VA International Relief and Development (IRD), a major implementer of U.S. foreign assistance and a leader in the international stabilization and development community, announced today that U.S. Ambassador John Dimitri Negroponte has joined the organizations Advisory Council. "We are honored by Ambassador Negropontes willingness to serve with the other distinguished members of our Advisory Council, said Dr. Arthur Keys, President and Chief Executive Officer of IRD. John brings years of invaluable experience and insights that will help IRD as we continue to expand our development and stabilization work around the globe. Negroponte has been Ambassador to Honduras, Mexico, the Philippines, the United Nations, and Iraq. In Washington, he served twice on the National Security Council staff, first as Director for Vietnam in the Nixon Administration and then as Deputy National Security Advisor under President Reagan. He also held a cabinet level position as the first Director of National Intelligence under President George W. Bush. His most recent position in government was as Deputy Secretary of State, where he served as the State Departments Chief Operating Officer. Ambassador Negroponte has received numerous awards in recognition of his more than four decades of public service, including the State Departments highest award, the Distinguished Service Medal, on two separate occasions. He was also awarded the National Security Medal by President Bush for his outstanding contributions to U.S. national security. In the private sector, Ambassador Negroponte has served in the leadership of the McGraw-Hill Companies, the French-American Foundation, the Council of the Americas/Americas Society, and the Asia Society. He currently works as Vice Chairman of McLarty Associates, an international strategic advisory firm in Washington, D.C. He also serves his alma mater, Yale University, as a distinguished senior research fellow and a lecturer in international affairs. -- more --
