Bali Post confirms that the new elevated toll way connecting Sanur and Nusa Dua-Benoa will commence construction following a formal groundbreaking ceremony set for August 2011. The regent of Badung, A.A. Gde Agung, commenting to the press while visiting the Badung House of Representatives (DPRD-Badung), said the final paperwork for the project is in the hands of the provincial administration. If the documentation for the toll way is finished, the project can

Developers are racing against the clock, hoping to have the new toll way fully operational in time for the prestigious APEC Summit in 2013. Www.balidiscovery.com

Bali's Regents Refuse to Move Against Illegal 'Kafes' Cited as a Source of HIV/AIDS, Choosing Political Expediency Over Public Health.
That Bali's illegal roadside kafes have become a significant source of Bali's current HIV/AIDS epidemic. While this fact is not contested, it remains strangely ironic that Bali's regional authorities remain steadfast in their resistance to any moves to shut down the infectious dens. Bali's Governor Pastika has not been shy to in diagnosing both the problem and its solution. Said the governor, an increase in the spread of HIV/AIDS is due in part to the increase in 'kafes' existing in the regencies and municipalities across Bali. As reported by The Bali Post, the governor has expressed his agreement with the warning issued by the Golkar fraction of the Bali

Pastika has accused the regents of gross inaction. He told the press of how a regent once explained to him that he was unprepared to move against the 'kafes' in his region. These businesses, which often serve as fronts for prostitution, are owned by local constituents, supposedly making them politically untouchable. The "community leaders" in the regions, who own many of the 'kafes,' object to any action that will trim their personal profits, even at the cost of a raising death toll from HIV/AIDS infection. As a result, the regents would prefer that the provincial government tackled the delicate problem, but the legal ability to move on the businesses currently rests completely with the regional governments.

Half of men would ditch woman who gained weight poll

Men are more concerned with their partner's body type than women but they also seem to value family more highly, according to a new survey. Nearly half of men questioned in the poll of 70,000 people said they would ditch a partner who gained weight, compared to only 20 percent of women. Two-third of men also said they had fantasized about their partner's friends, while only one-third of women had done so. "Even as men are getting more comfortable with meeting their girlfriends online and less anxious about who she's 'friending' there, other romantic behaviours have proven to be timeless ones: chivalry isn't dead, size matters, and women forgive while men forget," said James Bassil, who conducted the poll. While only 18 percent of women said they would want their mate to be better endowed, more than 51 percent of men said they wished they themselves were. But the survey also found 39 percent of men chose family as their top choice of the ultimate status symbol. By contrast, 43 percent of women selected a beautiful home, compared to only 6.5 percent of men. One-quarter of women named a successful partner as a top status symbol.
should pay their own way, versus 33 percent who think men should foot the bill. But 59 percent of men think they should cover the tab, at least u n t i l a relationship is established. Nearly 80 percent of men said they feel cheated by the divorce courts. But more women feel the sexes receive equal treatment than those who agree the men get a raw deal. Women are also far less comfortable with their mates keeping in touch with their ex. More than two-thirds of men are okay with their partner friending an ex on Facebook, as opposed to 38 percent of women. But three-quarters of men surveyed said they consider sexting cheating.

House of Representatives (DPRD-Bali) who have labelled the HIV/AIDS contagion in Bali as a time bomb. Because of this, the governor has repeatedly urged regents and mayors to tighten control on 'kafes'. Bemoaned the governor: I have twice written to the regencies and municipalities in Bali calling on them to bring the 'kafes' into line. But this has never been done by the regents.

On matters connected Agung is optimistic that the the road is not with zoning and land use, Gde toll way will proceed smoothly contemplated in the RTRW Zoning law of 2009. Because the new road is included in a Presidential regulation its construction takes legal precedence over any regional or provincial regulation. The elevated toll way between Sanur and Nusa DuaBenoa is only one of several solutions being pursued to overcome Bali's worsening traffic congestion problem. Also scheduled to start construction later this year is an underpass at @ the Dewa Ruci Monument (Simpang Siur) in Kuta.

The sale of a 200-year-old bottle of white wine for 75,000 pounds has set a new Guinness World Record for the most valuable bottle of white wine ever sold.
The buyer of the 1811 Chateau d'Yquem was private collector Christian Vanneque, former head Sommelier at the Michelin starred La Tour d'Argent restaurant in Paris. Though Chateau d'Yquem is famed for being one of the finest and most expensive sweet white wines, the 1811 vintage has a particular attraction for wine enthusiasts. The climatology of the year, reviews from tastings, as well as the auspicious appearance of the Great Comet in that year, all indicate an excellent wine. "This wine is very special -- it is attached to the most renowned white wine in the world, and it was produced in the year of the Great Comet, which was believed to

"I always have a tear in my eye when I sell a bottle of wine but I'm comforted by the knowledge that it has been purchased by someone passionate about wine and it's going to a good home," said company Managing Director Stephen Williams.

"It was not just purchased as an investment - it is also going to be an enjoyment." "I did not know it was the most expensive white wine ever sold when I purchased it, but I did know it was the most expensive wine I had ever paid for." The high concentration of sugar in Chateau d'Yquem means it has a drinking life which far outstrips that of other wines. The wine will be displayed in a bullet-proof, temperature and hydrometrically controlled showcase for six years at his restaurant, the SIP Sunset Grill in Bali. BALI THE RIGHT WAY

'day again folks and what a fantastic weekend just gone in the footy with the Mighty Pies looking like an unstoppable machine and taking a good win. Also a good win for the Saints who shouldn't be shrugged off just yet as they now hold sixth spot. I will take my hat off to Geelong for the almost record breaking win over the Demons, and in anyone's book I think a thrashing like that (186 points) would most certainly be the cause for the Demons coach to fall on his sword. Can you imagine the family Aaliasj@kutaweekly.com dinner table in that house right now, No Thanks. It seems to me the finals series will be a three horse race. Time will tell with only five weeks left until the business end of the season. Moving along I have it on good authority that the first year celebration at the Y-Bar last Sunday was a great success. Thank you to all the expat community that turned out and a huge thanks to the lucky travellers that happened to be here for the party. The sack race was won by a young fellow who was here for the first time and I do hope next year, the expats get into the swing a bit more and push for the sack race flag. Well done Y-Bar and happy birthday to Mr Steve for the 8th. This week brought the start of Ramadan for all our Muslim friends so remember don't ask one to join you for a lunch time feed or an afternoon barby and beers, as it's just not cricket. A true Muslim will not eat or drink while the sun is up however, once the sun goes down they eat and drink as usual so please show some respect while here enjoying the Island of the Gods. It is a time for all Muslims to reflect on sacrifice and prayer. This month also brings Independence Day to Indonesia, so look out for the red and white flags everywhere. It is the 17th of August and you will see red and white flags draped over literally everything from cars to shop fronts. In 1945 the Proclamation of Indonesia was declared. Indonesians are a very proud race of people, with the country arguably being an up and coming world super power. You may notice the words Dirgahayu RI meaning Long live Indonesia which you will see everywhere. Congratulations to all our Indonesian friends. Again I have been asked to keep it short and sweet, so I will sign out for the week and leave you to do your thing. I hope you all stay happy, healthy, safe and always remember, I am glad that I paid so little attention to good advice, had I abided by it I might have been saved from some of my most valuable mistakes. Enjoy your week Punters, until next week, Karn the Pies, ALIASJ.

Gary the giant fish loves his Kit Kats

Kit Kat pieces inside grapes to get Gary to "take a break" from his daily fix. "I have never heard of a fish being fed chocolate, let alone being brought up entirely on the stuff," said Gary's handler, Rebecca Carter. "Gouramis usually eat a diet of fruit, but Gary doesn't appear to have suffered any ill effects from his chocolate addiction. "However, we would not recommend feeding fish creature to move to the confectionery of any kind." aquarium from private owners. Gary is not the only unusual Nearby is another fish called Ed with similar habits Ed will only accept his food by hand and likes to be stroked on the head at the same time. He had also learned to headbutt a lethal puffer fish that vies for his food, staff said. Gary and Ed's interest in food highlighted a more serious issue, aquarists said. They have nicknamed one display the "tank busters" tank, because it houses a number of large fish that simply grew too big for their owners to manage. "Many people don't do the right research when they buy fish and end up unable to care for them," Ms Carter said. "Catfish are a good example and we have a number here that outgrew their homes. "Terrapins are another they can live for 40 years and are actually quite costly to care for. "We'd urge people to think before they buy. "We're delighted we could find a home for Gary but the fact is we simply do not have the space to accommodate the vast number of re-homing requests we receive."

Kevin Rudd gets cat to drink tea to win votes in Twinings competition
HE'S adept at foisting political tripe on the unsuspecting, but getting a cat to drink a cup of tea? - now there's a challenge worthy of our Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd. In an online video posted on his Facebook page, Kev gets his cat Jasper to try a special blend of tea that he's created out of a rather dainty but utilitarian pink cup and saucer. And he encourages his dog, Abby, to have a slurp as well. No peanut butter in sight, mind you. Kev's mad catter tea party was filmed by him, in his Brisbane home, apparently in sane mind, to boost his chance of having his own
blend of tea released by Twinings. It's a ploy to get an edge over his combatants - radio broadcaster Alan Jones, TV host Kerri-Anne Kennerley, former pro-surfer Layne Beachley and country singer John Williamson - in the online contest to score votes for his "Kev's Avo Tea''. In the video he nudges the cup and saucer closer to Jasper, giggling in delight when the pussy eventually succumbs. In fact, Jasper goes back again for a victory lap. For the record, Kev's brew is listed as a blend of "the slightly smoky Russian Caravan with the full bodied Irish Breakfast and then added the light Ceylon Orange Pekoe''. As of this morning, Jones is in the lead, closely followed by Kev with KAK's cuppa last. If Kev does get into pole-cat position, then 10 cents from every tin of his pussy-approved tea will be donated to the RSPCA.

Tears in our Beer

Beer Production Declining Due to Large Increases in Excise Tax Rates on Alcoholic Beverages.
Indonesia's beer industry sales have declined following increases in excise taxes imposed on all forms of alcoholic beverage on April 1, 2010. NusaBali quotes the spokesman of the Indonesian Malt Beverage Producers (GIMMI), Ipung Nimpuno, who claims that Indonesian beer producers have increased their prices between 25-35% since the increase in excise tax. Meanwhile, producers have, on the average, used this increase to cover 56% of the increase in excise tax on beer products. Beer producers, unprepared to pass along the entire burden of the higher excise tax, have shouldered part of the increase tax cost while at the same time suffering reduced profit margins. The companies (beer producers) have a limited capacity to absorb the tax increase by reducing their profit margins, explained Nimpuno. The ability to subsidize the higher tax rate is, however, strictly limited, and many beer producers have also been forced to seek out greater efficiencies in the cost of production. It is our hope that this year and next year that the government will not increase our (tax) burden, because if the excise tax goes up again it will create an unhealthy business climate, said Nimpuno. Nimp uno also pointed out that the sudden and dramatic rise in the cost of alcoholic beverages has also increased the amount of illegal moonshine produced across the nation. In 2009, there were 70 people who died from drinking black-market alcohol. From 2010 to mid-2011 the number who have died from tainted and unregulated alcohol production have increased to 250, emphasized Nimpuno. Effective April 1, 2010 the excise tax on beer increased between 214% to 340%. The excise tax on wines domestically produced wine also increased between 300% 500%. The excise tax on domestically produced spirits increased 188%.

The police chief of a small South Carolina town will ask a jury to decide if a woman broke the state's obscenity laws by driving a pickup truck with plastic testicles hanging from the back.
Police Chief Franco Fuda ticketed Virginia Tice, 65, in early July at a local convenience store after spying the adornment dangling from her truck. Sometimes obstacles are simple problems, no more. But judging by the Sun's clash with Jupiter across the parts of your chart that accent a balance between life's pleasures and its obligations, your priorities need some serious thought. You could be missing out on opportunities. But you may also be ignoring pivotal duties.

scrutiny. In September 2009, a widely publicized YouTube video showed the mayor making sexually explicit comments about his sister-in-law while he was at a bar. The cell phone video was released shortly after Angela Payne, the former city human resources director, accused Ryan in a letter of making drunken advances on her at a Sheboygan tavern. Ryan admitted a relapse in July 2010, saying he went out drinking with his brother, but a city council resolution asking him to resign at the time was voted down 11-5. The council committee met in closed session and voted to unanimously to ask Ryan to resign. To remove Ryan as mayor, a Sheboygan citizen must bring a certified complaint, and the council must vote to remove him, said Alderman James Bohren, the chairman of the committee that asked Ryan to go. The council was expected to take up that matter.

If you find yourself contemplating changes you'd previously dismissed, it's no surprise. The recent New Moon accented the structure of your life, at home and out in the world, and triggered insights about arrangements you've regarded as unchanging. What you've learned has given you a whole new world of options to consider.

Gemini
Most Geminis have an instinctive awareness that even the simplest of plans are part of the pattern that becomes a life. But not everybody understands that. Ordinarily, you're able to defuse any anxieties about those changes. However, with things moving so swiftly, your tact will be stretched to the limit.

Sagittarius
The trick to dealing with the current adverse aspect between the Sun and your ruler Jupiter is to move fast. You're assuming things will work out. But not only is that untrue, the longer you wait, the more complicated achieving a solution will be. Act swiftly and you'll put things right with relative ease.

Cancer
The past week or so has been somewhat embattled, if only because you've struggled to keep certain worthwhile plans or ideas going. While this week begins on the same note, within days those arrangements you've been struggling to tie up suddenly come good. If in doubt, press on. You'll be glad you did.

Capricorn
Few Capricorns are comfortable living with uncertainty. However, judging by the fresh perspective on certain pivotal business or financial matters triggered by the recent New Moon, youve a lot to think about. This alone would be no problem. The challenge is gathering the facts necessary to reach a conclusion about what you should do next.

Leo
Last week's exciting if unexpected events were unsettling enough. But now you're facing yet more surprise developments from an entirely different quarter of your life. You're feeling overwhelmed and are doing all you can to slow, if not halt, the process. Don't bother. Once you've accepted these changes, you'll realise how wonderful they are.

Aquarius
Learning that certain matters won't be resolved for two weeks may not cheer you. However, by the 13th, when the pivotal Aquarius Full Moon actually takes place, you'll not only be relieved these took so long to deal with, you'll wonder if you can't put decisions off for a bit more.

Virgo
It's been only a few days since your ruler Mercury moved into Virgo, and you're already feeling the relief that comes with its presence in your sign. It clears your mind and gives your spirits a much needed boost. This is the perfect moment to discuss issues that require you to be forthright.

Pisces
You may think you know how you feel about certain pivotal issues. But with the ideas planet Mercury challenging your ruler Neptune twice within ten days, events will force you to assess those views carefully. Challenging as what you're facing may be, the resulting insights will be more than justify the effort.

iPhone accessories appeal to all tastes

Japanese company Suetake Sample, which specialises in plastic food models, started producing the cases late last year. Each is handmade, with even the smallest food pieces painstakingly painted so they are difficult to distinguish from the real thing. And they've become hot property around the world, with thousands now carrying bacon in their briefcases, hors d'oeuvres in their handbags and prawns in their pockets. These cases were on show in Yokohama, near Tokyo, this week. The prices varies from 2000 to 4000 yen ($26 - $56) around the world.

These iPhone cases look just about good enough to eat.

ALL ABOUT BALI

Ubud, a must visit in Bali.
The quiet, touristy town of Ubud is considered by many to be the epicenter for arts and culture in Bali. Ubud (pronounced Ew-bood) has developed a reputation as a place with a positive vibe, possibly explaining why so many artists and naturalists have settled in the lush, green areas around town. Although tourism in Ubud is growing faster than the town can keep up, there is still a certain tranquility and happiness to be found in the clean air. The town has become a popular and peaceful retreat from the parties and crowded madness of Kuta just two hours away. Shopping in Ubud The influx of tourism in Ubud mixed with the proximity of so many artists has caused a great deal of unique boutiques and shops to open. Unlike the tacky, beach-tourist feeling of shopping in Kuta, Ubud provides a much more sophisticated experience. Local shops are filled with unique and beautiful crafts, art work, carvings, jewelery, and gifts to take back home. The sprawling, indoor Ubud Market caters mostly to tourists in search of cheap souvenirs. Be sure to haggle prices - negotiation is expected or you may end up paying triple what something is worth Walking the Rice Fields Ubud has spilled out into its tiny surrounding villages, but the growth has not ruined the natural setting of the beautiful surroundings. Green rice fields still blanket much of the area and can easily be reached by foot or on bicycle. The fields may be hiked along a twisting path for miles through tiny, thatchedroof villages. You will find the start of one of the trails just past the small market outside the "top" entrance of the Ubud Monkey Forest. Hiking these tranquil fields in the morning to the sounds village life beginning is something you will never forget. Get Healthy With scores of holistic medicine practitioners now living around Ubud, it is no surprise that so many spas and meditation centers have opened up. In town you can easily find all types of Eastern and Western massage centers, reiki healers, herbal medicine shops, and even acupuncture practitioners. The Bodyworks Healing Centre was the first of such places and has been providing natural healing to the local people long before Ubud was on the tourist map. outside. Hindu Temples Ubud and the villages in the surrounding area contain dozens of examples of beautiful Hindu Temples. Most temples are free to visit or ask for a small donation. Proper attire is required, although many temples will loan or rent a sarong for your visit. Pura Penataran Asih in nearby Pejeng is a charming temple containing the largest bronze kettle drum in the world. The Bronze Age drum is known as the "Moon of Pejeng" and dates back to 300 B.C. Pura Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung is Bali's most sacred temple site. A complex of 23 temples can be explored on a day trip from Ubud. Elephant Cave Only two km south of Ubud lies one of the most sacred sites in Bali - Goa Gajah. Also known as the Elephant Cave, this Hindu site dates back to the 11th Century and was nominated as a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cave is believed to have been home to Hindu priests and the entrance is carved with menacing figures from Hindu legend. The interior of the cave is dark and contains a few religious relics. The site is still used for worship by locals so proper dress is required to enter. Ubud Monkey Forest The shady, green Ubud Monkey Forest is the most popular stop for tourists in the town of Ubud itself. Hundreds of playful and interactive Macaque monkeys call the sacred forest home and roam freely around the tree canopy and temple complex. Walking around the winding, mosscovered brick paths of the Monkey Forest is a great way to escape the heat of the afternoon, but mind your belongings. The steady stream of tourists has made the monkeys bold enough to even reach into pockets in search of something interesting!

Petulu A strange, natural phenomenon occurs each evening just north of Ubud in the village of Petulu. Thousands of white herons arrive here around 6:00 p.m. and prepare to roost for the night before flying off again in the morning. The birds first began coming here after a communist massacre in 1965 but no one is sure why they continue to return. Local lore holds that these are the souls of those that were killed. Such a predictable gathering of these large and beautiful birds is a spectacle not to be missed. Balinese Dance Performances No visit to Ubud is complete without seeing at least one traditional dance performance. Although the performances are very touristoriented, this is a great opportunity to see classic Hindu legends being told through dancers in colorful, traditional costumes. Ubud Palace is a popular place providing shows nightly as well as Pura Dalem which has twice-weekly shows and fire dances performed

WHAT CAUSES ARTHRITIS????
A drunk man who smelled like beer sat down on a subway next to a priest. The man's tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, and a halfempty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading. After a few minutes the man turned to the priest and asked, 'Say Father, what causes arthritis?' The priest replies, 'My Son, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, contempt for your fellow man,! sleeping around with prostitutes and lack of a bath.' The drunk muttered in response, 'Well, I'll be damned,' Then returned to his paper. The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologised. 'I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to come on so strong. How long have you had arthritis?' The drunk answered, 'I don't have it, Father. I was just reading here that the Pope does.

Southern U.S. distillery to legally sell moonshine

Two entrepreneurs are taking advantage of new micro-distillery laws in South Carolina to make and sell traditional m oons hine whis k e y legally for the first time in the southern state.
The Dark Corner Distillery will open next month in Greenville, where engineer Joe Fenten, 27, and longtime home beer brewer Richard Wenger will produce and sell small batches of 100-proof moonshine from a custommade copper still. The distillery, housed in a 1925 building, will also include a tasting bar and a museum dedicated to the history of the Dark Corner, the local mountains that were once full of moonshiners. The area was settled, along with the nearby Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, by Scots, Irish and Welsh who migrated down through the Appalachian mountain chain from Pennsylvania in the 1700s. "They thought it was their inalienable, God-given right to make whiskey," said Fenten, a Dark Corner native. "It was a hard life. If you could make an extra 10 cents more for a gallon of whiskey than you could for a bushel of corn, then why not?" Moonshine traditionally was the term used to describe illegally distilled corn whiskey often made covertly by the light of the moon. The product made at the new distillery will be un-aged corn whiskey, but will be taxed and regulated. The area came to be called the Dark Corner in 1832 by South Carolina politicians seeking to nullify federal law and who cursed the people of the mountains as Unionists, said Dean Campbell, a Dark Corner native who is the distillery's official historian. Whiskey taxes after the Civil War and then Prohibition in the 20th century made the place more lawless, Campbell said. News accounts in the 1920s called the Dark Corner "a little Chicago" because of federal agents' raids on stills, killings, and gun and knife fights that broke out after church, he said. Illegal moonshine is still being made there, Campbell said. In June, sheriff's deputies busted a still in Landrum, South Carolina, and confiscated 2,000 gallons of illegal white liquor along with $150,000 in cash. State lawmakers in 2009 altered existing liquor laws in a way that lessened the financial burden on small distilleries, paving the way for the Dark Corner Distillery to set up shop. Despite the drink's reputation, legal moonshine makers also have popped up in other states, including Oregon, Wisconsin, Montana, Missouri, K e n t u c k y , Tennessee, Virginia, New York and North Carolina.

Germans brew more beer for first time since 2007

Warm weather and a strong export market in the first six months of the year have helped German brewers reverse a long decline in beer production.
The total volume of beer produced in Germany in the first half rose on an annual basis for the first time in four years, up 1.0 percent to 4.946 billion litres. "It's definitely down to the temperature," said Juergen Hammer, an official at the Federal Statistics Agency, pointing to an unusually warm April and May that had boosted demand. The amount of beer produced for domestic consumption in the first six months rose from the first time since the hot summer when Germany hosted the soccer World Cup in 2006, edging up by 0.2 percent. Although the average German of legal drinking age still puts away about 120 litres of beer a year -- roughly a glass a day -- consumption has fallen in recent years as Germans turn to wine and other beverages. However, foreigners are developing an increasing taste for German beer -- the ingredients of which have been subject to strict government regulation since the 16th century. The volume of beer produced for export, just over a tenth of national production, grew by an annual 5.3 percent in the first six months of 2011, with a marked 13.6 percent rise in beer destined for outside the European Union. Most German brewers are relatively small, privately owned companies, although one of the best known international brands produced in Germany, Beck's, is owned by the world's largest brewer, Belgium's Anheuser-Busch InBev.

Woman finds condom in canned tomatoes

A Brazilian woman who ate a dish of savoury meatballs with tomato sauce only to discover a condom in the tomato can, will be awarded $US5000 ($4552) in damages. The southern state of Rio Grande do Sul fined the tomato saucemaker the amount for "moral damages". The woman was using tomato paste to season meatballs and it was only after finishing the meal that she noticed mould in the bottom of the can, with the condom wrapped around what remained of the paste. Describing the "grotesque scene", Judge Joao Gilberto Marroni Vitola said in his ruling that the experience had "profoundly disgusted the family". The tomato sauce company claimed that its entire production and packaging process was automated.

No regrets over comments: Meninga

Mal Meninga came away from a meeting with the NRL match review panel on Monday impressed by how difficult their "mind numbing" job is, but he still did not regret his scathing column almost a month ago. Panel members Greg McCallum, Bradley Clyde and Peter Louis had agreed to drop defamation action against Meninga after the Queensland State of Origin coach had agreed to sit in on one of their weekly video reviews of NRL matches. That was after he had slammed their citing of star Maroons half-back Johnathan Thurston and the five-week suspension of back rower Dave Taylor for a
lifting tackle, claiming inconsistency. In a newspaper column published after the Origin series, Meninga also labelled unnamed people within New South Wales rugby league as "rats and filth" trying to bring down his team, which won a record sixth straight Origin title. Meninga says Monday's meeting in Sydney gave him a better understanding of the match video review committee's work. "I think it was excellent actually ... The tribunal was not required to sit on Tuesday night after North Melbourne midfielder Jack Ziebell, Fremantle's Dylan Roberton, Western Bulldogs defender Tom Williams, Adelaide's Chris Knights and Port Adelaide's Cameron O'Shea all accepted reprimands with early guilty pleas. Ziebell, Roberton and O'Shea were all booked for striking, Knights was charged with engaging in rough conduct and Williams was reported for tripping. Promising defender Phil Davis says money was not the sole reason for walking out on Adelaide to join new AFL entity Greater Western Sydney. The 20-year-old key defender has become the first player to join GWS from an existing AFL club, leaving the Crows after just 18 games. Davis refused to detail the length of his contract or the money involved. "I am not going to lie, money is a factor," Davis said. "Money was a factor but i t ' s n o t everything, football is the main thing for me. " T h e opportunity to start a new franchise, the challenges that come with that and everything that is involved really drew me to it." Davis said he was unaware of any other GWS signings from existing clubs amid speculation over the likes of promising Melbourne midfielder Tom Scully. "I have heard the rumours like everyone else ... if they are true, I'm very excited (but) they can't tell me that," he said. Adelaide football operations manager Phil Harper said the Crows were

Sprinkled on almost every dish, grown by old ladies in their homes and boiled to combat sweating: the herb dill is a matter of Russian national pride.
Pungent and strongtasting, the Russian love for the spindly herb appears to know no bounds, bewildering foreigners who are not used to such heavy use. Russian cuisine is so tightly tied to dill that its Russian name 'ukrop' can be traced to the word 'kropit', meaning 'to sprinkle'. Dill has also begun to appear on non-Russian dishes, often spotted coating the feta of a Greek salad in cafes and supermarkets, and giving a traditional flavour to omelettes and even pizzas at eateries across the Russian capital. Russians say its ubiquity has left them inured to the taste. According to one of Russia's oldest and largest greenhouse providers, Agrotip, the average Russian consumes 1.6 kg (3.5 lbs) of dill a year -- about enough to fill a large suitcase. "I guess compared to other European countries, Russia eats the most dill. We have no export markets," said Agrotip operations manager Olga Antipova.

Andrea Maestrelli, an Italian chef in charge of Research and Development at Rosinter, Russia's largest chain of restaurants, put dill's popularity down to "being very easy to g r o w. I t ' s t h e m o s t widespread product available in Russian fields." But foreigners are growing increasingly hostile to this Russian obsession, "I don't think there is a Westerner in Russia who hasn't noticed the dill plague... Most people find it an inconvenience at best. "Five years ago, dill would be everywhere on travels around the Russian provinces, but in posh Moscow restaurants you would never find it. Recently, though, I feel there has been a definite increase in indiscriminate dill use," Yevgenia Zinets, who manages one of their 11 Moscow branches, denied the widespread use of dill but did say it is scattered in plenty over omelettes and placed in pumpkin soup. But for Russians it remains innocuous. "We eat a lot of it as it's so tasty and good for you, and growing it is a must," said Yelena Garan, 28, a project manager from St Petersburg.

footy club, then I'll help in the manner that I can." He says a number of things need to change quickly behind the scenes at the Demons if the club's fortunes are to improve. "If you can't come to the resolution, someone goes," he said. "Because to have weak, cancerous types within a footy club who look you in the eye and say one thing and walk out the door, gravitate to other people of a similar mind-set and start potting and undermining, you're never going to be any good." Lyon, who has a burgeoning media career including hosting the Nine Network's AFL Footy Show, said any role with the Dees would involve him returning to the media for the start of 2012. any involvement would be in a football administration capacity and only until the end of the season. Lyon, now a media commentator who captained the Demons during a 13-year career there, said he had not wanted to be involved in any structured role with the club. But watching the clearly struggling Stynes - a close friend of Lyon's - announce Bailey's sacking on Monday has changed his view. "What happened when I sat down and watched that press conference was I felt enormously for Jim Stynes," Lyon said. "When I saw Jimmy dealing with that in the way he was dealing with it, I didn't think that was right. "My own feelings about not wanting to get involved with the footy club - I felt guilty when I saw that. "At this time of his life, I don't think it's right at all and I worry for him, and I'm going to tell him that tomorrow when I see him. "If he wants me to help the

Garry Lyon (R) says he is prepared to help the Demons in a short-term capacity.
Melbourne legend Garry Lyon will take on the temporary role of the club's football director, a day after coach Dean Bailey was sacked. Lyon said he was willing to get involved with the AFL club in a short-term role, concerned at the toll the Demons' woes are having on cancer-stricken president Jim Stynes. But he has once more ruled out ever coaching the club, saying

Mentioned in the Bible for its medicinal qualities, dill is a regular feature in Russian herbal anthologies, which recommend it for gastritis, insomnia and tension of the arteries. Russian TV celebrity Mikhail Grebenshikov promoted dill on state TV earlier this month, urging Muscovites to boil large bunches of it for their showers to combat sweating. "It's summer. Sun and heat! People are sweating. But I don't have that problem. My secret -- it's in dill," a shirtless Grebenshikov

DeVere slots into the squad for Sasa Ognenovski, who Osieck said was just coming back from an injury suffered in the South Korean league. Osieck said he did not consider striker Josh Kennedy due to a hectic club schedule in Japan. The other 14 players remain from the squad which played the home friendlies in June, with Brisbane Roar skipper Matt McKay the only current A-League player. Midfielder Brett Emerton is poised to become the secondmost capped Socceroo behind Schwarzer. He will equal Alex Tobin's tally of 87 A-internationals in the match, with Schwarzer currently on 89. This is the first official match between Wales and Australia at senior men's level. The Socceroos will assemble in Wales on Monday after completing weekend club commitments.

Uncontracted stars Kewell and Lucas Neill have maintained a training regime since being released by T u r k i s h c l u b Galatasaray - but only the latter was deemed fit for the clash in Cardiff on August 10. "There is a slight difference between the two of them, one is fit and one was is not fit," Osieck said on Tuesday after announcing his 18-strong squad. "Lucas has done a lot of work. He is in very good shape but Harry is not in very good shape." Kewell also missed the home friendlies against New Zealand and Serbia in June. He appears to be racing Harry brings to the team. I am

The Dockers have been shorn of the services of Rhys Palmer and Matt de Boer after their 51-point loss to the Hawks.
Fremantle's finals hopes are hanging by a thread after two more players succumbed to injury in the 51point AFL defeat by Hawthorn at rain-drenched Subiaco Oval on Saturday night. Dockers midfielder Rhys Palmer could miss the rest of the season after rolling his right ankle in a marking contest, while defensive forward Matt de Boer is expected to miss at least several weeks after damaging the medial ligament in his left knee. To compound matters ruckman Jonathon Griffin, a late withdrawal against the Hawks due to a hip injury, is no certainty to recover in time for Friday night's crunch clash with St Kilda while Aaron Sandilands (toe) and David Mundy (leg) are not expected to return either. Despite still clinging to eighth spot on the table, Fremantle's finals chances appear slim, with the away encounter against St Kilda to be followed by tough assignments against Carlton, North Melbourne (away), Collingwood and the Bulldogs (away). But coach Mark Harvey said it was too early to write off his team just yet. "Well you're better off in that position (fighting for the

The 32-year-old Vickerman played his 56th Test - and the first Test for about three years following a study sabbatical in England when he started in last month's upset loss to Samoa. He is now set to vie with Queenslanders James Horwill and Rob Simmons for the second row starting roles. The squad arrived in Auckland on Wednesday. "I think he (Hodge) will be OK," the coach said. "He got a knock early in the game a g a i n s t Melbourne last week. " H e played out the game but he had a little bit of swelling, we thought it would have dissipated by Thursday but we tried to train and it just wasn't quite right. "So we just erred on the side of caution. "Hopefully the swelling has gone down a bit and he'll be right to play." Hawthorn's 13th win of the season moved them back above Carlton into third spot on the table - a position Clarkson hopes his team will be able to maintain in the run home. "We know top-four is the best position to mount a premiership assault, so that's a clear goal for us," he said. Although Lance Franklin was held goalless by Dockers defender Alex Silvagni, Clarkson was full of praise for the spearhead, who finished the match with 19 possessions, five tackles and three behinds.

the 24-man squad. Half-back Luke Burgess returns from injury, replacing Nick Phipps as likely back-up to Will Genia, while winger Lachie Turner was also called in along with Dan Vickerman and Sitaleki Timani. Giteau's struggles to get back into the Wallabies fold look set to continue with reports suggesting the centre is on the outer with Deans. Veteran second rower Nathan Sharpe's Rugby World Cup hopes are also in serious doubt after being dumped from the squad. The 33-year-old Western Force captain was overlooked by Deans in favour of returning veteran Vickerman. Sharpe, who has played 95 Tests, must now be only an outside chance to make the World Cup starting next month as New South Wales Waratahs rookie Sitaleki Timani was also included in the squad ahead of him.

Matt Giteau has been left out of the Wallabies squad again as his chances of World Cup selection continue to wane.
T h e Wa l l a b i e s h a v e announced their squad to face the All Blacks in their Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup clash at Eden Park on Saturday, with Matt Giteau and Nathan Sharpe both left out. "We appear to have struck a patch in the draw where it's delivering all these top sides. So you have to ask the AFL about that." Harvey played down the make-or-break nature of the upcoming clash with St Kilda. "No (it won't decide our season) because there are still another four or five weeks after that," he said. "Yes to win the game is important, but you've still got some chances beyond that." Fremantle was woeful against the Hawks, conceding the first eight goals of the match as the visitors raced out to a matchwinning 55-2 lead in torrential rain. The only concern for the Hawks was a late ankle injury to midfielder Sam Mitchell, whose leg twisted awkwardly under the weight of Nick Lower. But Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson declared n, and

"The last month, the season was going by and you get a good gauge of how your body and how your mind is feeling through that middle part of the season," said Ryan, who described leading the Bulldogs to the 2004 premiership as a career highlight. "Just then I tried to chase my three year-old out in the hallway and I couldn't catch her so I might just retire now." Ryan was adamant Canterbury did not force his hand. "Realistically, I was ready to retire and that's the decision I've made and I'm very happy with that decision," he said. "It wasn't great to see Kevin depart but it was physically, I suppose it was time. "I've been in the NRL for 12 seasons now and probably not getting any quicker at this stage of my career, and if I wasn't 100 per cent right to go overseas and play next year (I wasn't going to do it). "The opportunity to work in the NRL in something I'm very passionate about certainly outweighed all those factors.

Canterbury captain Andrew Ryan has announced he will retire from rugby league at the end of the season. The 32-year-old admitted he was disappointed at the sacking of Kevin Moore as coach last month, but denied that was a deciding factor or that he was forced out of the club. After 286 first-grade games over 12 seasons - 219 games with the Bulldogs - Ryan said he knew the time was right to call it quits from the game altogether. Ryan said he talked at length with his wife and long-term friend and team-mate Michael Hodgson and decided to turn down offers from the English Super League, instead taking up an education and welfare role with the
