Reclaim downtown as an economically healthy, people-friendly place, enhanced by a diversity of businesses and the movement of pedestrians, bikes and cars. One step towards this vision is to connect the grid of streets downtown, return to two-way streets, and improve the pedestrian environment.
Extending 161st Avenue NE from the new Bear Creek Parkway north to Redmond Way will complete the connection of 161st through downtown. This will add an additional north/south connection in Redmonds downtown, thereby providing more choices for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. New traffic signals will be installed at the Bear Creek Parkway/161st intersection and at the Cleveland St/161st intersection. The traffic signal at Redmond Way/161st will be revised to accommodate the new 161st street extension. The new corridor will include sidewalk and bicycle connections, street trees, and utility infrastructure such as water, storm, and street lighting.
Additional Projects
FUTURE DOWNTOWN PARK The City will purchase land for future development of a signature park in Downtown. This park will be a vibrant community space for special events, music and a great gathering place for the new residents of Downtown and the entire community. The development phase of the park will proceed when funding is available. In the interim, the area between the new 161st Avenue NE and Brown Street will be finished with a lawn area for public use.
Completed in 2008-2010
Project Area
REDMOND CENTRAL CONNECTOR On June 30, 2010, the City of Redmond acquired the Redmond Spur of the Woodinville Subdivision of the BNSF Rail Corridor, which extends from the junction of Bear Creek Trail at SR520 and Redmond Way west through Downtown and north to the intersection of Willows Road and NE 124th Street in the Sammamish Valley. The City is developing a master plan that ties the north and south sides of Downtown together to create a cultural corridor within the heart of the City. Construction of the first phase of this project, a regional trail connecting the Bear Creek Trail to the Sammamish River Trail through Downtown, is estimated to begin in 2012. REGIONAL STORM PIPE A regional storm water pipe will be constructed in the Downtown portion of the Connector beginning in 2011. This will involve digging a large trench along the Connector from Redmond Way east to 166th Avenue NE. FUTURE 164th AVENUE NE EXTENSION Design work is beginning on the 164th Avenue NE extension across the Connector with construction anticipated to start in 2012.
