Jack Petchey Award winners September and October winners

SEPTEMBER 2010 AWARD WINNER: Lizzy Gilson CITATION: Lizzy is awarded the Jack Petchey Achiever Award for September for showing determination and persistence to achieve in a number of subjects but particularly Art and Maths. In Art she is always willing to put in extra work after school in her free time. In Maths last year, Lizzy set herself a high target. She set about achieving this by getting hold of revision books, working on her own, but also making the most of help on offer in school. The result was exceeding expectations with a good grade at GCSE.

OCTOBER 2010 AWARD WINNER: Josie Gilchriest CITATION: Josie is awarded the Achiever Award for October for her wholehearted commitment to helping others in need both inside and outside school. Over the past year she has helped with the collection following the earthquake in Haiti, she was involved in activities for the Shooting Star Hospice Appeal in Lent. She helped organise prefects to supervise the Silver Dove table. She regularly takes care of some younger pupils and she has also always been willing to take part in school productions and concerts. Well done!

Houses of Parliament Trip by Connor Patterson On Thursday 14th October six of the School Council members went to the Houses of Parliament for a trip to see inside how the country is run and our laws get enforced. Two members from year seven, eight and nine were elected to go on the trip. We got up there by train and were greeted with a delicious lunch, although of course that was not the best part of the trip! First of all, we were toured into the central lobby where we were told all about the place. We then got to see the House of Lords AND the House of Commons debating LIVE. It was a very interesting experience and we agreed we could have stayed there a lot longer. We also happened to bump into Zac Goldsmith! It was good to see he was doing his job for Richmond! We then went to a workshop which meant that all the school council members who were there from our local area did a mini election, which helped us understand more and more about how the country is run and how the prime minister is elected. It was a great trip in which we learnt a lot and we saw an insight of how our country is run!

GCSE Leisure and Tourism Trip On the 14th of October a group of 8 GCSE Leisure and Tourism students went to the Barnes Wetlands Centre as part of their coursework. They spent the whole day learning about the different facilities the centre has and the different groups of people that visit. They were shown round the centre by education manage Steve who answered all their questions. They visited the peacock tower (which is the only bird hide in Europe to have a lift). In the tower they met a lovely volunteer who let them use her telescope and pointed out rare birds such as a falcon. It was a very productive day which everyone enjoyed. A great place to visit and I would recommend it to anyone. By Josie Gilchriest

Black History Month Celebration 20th October 2010 The event to celebrate Black History month was attended by members of the Afro Caribbean Boys Group the members included Jesse Mapp, Henry Obaretin, Kaylan Brade, Kamron Roberts, Shaun Reynolds Williamson (Staff)Karen Brown and myself. The event was not only to celebrate the achievements of the Afro Caribbean community, but also to recognise the difference and role the Afro Caribbean community has played in society.

Entertainment was provided by the Angolan community with the Kazumba dance, which I participated in (the boys were too shy to try the dance!) the Brazilian community also provided us with some choreographed martial arts dancing. Guest speakers gave us an insight on the black community migrating to England helping build motorways and suburban roads. The Mayor of Richmond also praised the event and the contribution the Afro Caribbean community played in the development of this country. He spoke about the 4000 Caribbeans that had come over to fight with Britain in World War1. The event was a success the boys enjoyed themselves and the day was capped off with some delicious dishes that were served for us all to enjoy. By Nick Graham

Peace Talk Assembly We were privileged to welcome Peace One Day founder Jeremy Gilley to Christ's on 12th October. Jeremy spent an hour talking to year 10 and taking a Q&A session. Jeremy, whose organisation has had considerable recent success in Afghanistan, spoke about the challenges he has had in a decade long campaign to successfully create a UN backed International World Peace Day (21st September). Year 11 citizenship students will be continuing Jeremys good work. James Butler

Silver Dove Day- 19th October Silver Dove Day was in aid of the Princess Alice Hospice in Esher who are celebrating 25 years of their work. The Hospice staff asked students and staff in local schools to cover a poster picture of a black dove with silver coins 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p pieces. Prefects, Tristan Pegg, Devangi Sheth, Biba RandleCaprez and Josie Gilchriest raised 94.45 for the Hospice. Well done!

ASDAN DISCO A REAL SUCCESS

Fun was had by all 60 children that attended the after school Halloween Disco. The Disco was organised and run by the year 10 ASDAN group who worked very hard on the decorations, ambiance and buffet for the event. The group organised games and had a playlist of tunes chosen by the Year 7s themselves. The group made amazing cakes and had on offer many sweets, crisps and chocolate as well as a Halloween punch with hands and spiders for all to see! The profit of the event will go to charity which the group have yet to choose. Well done Year 10 ASDAN a fabulous night had by all. By Catherine Harris

Heavenly Hot
Heavenly hot is a year 11 Enterprise project. The project is a hot chocolate Company which will open its doors for 6 Wednesdays in the Autumn term to staff and students. The Group are involved in the complete development of the project from, brainstorming the name and the concept to its logo and marketing. Each group member has a specific role and like the Apprentice they all have to muck in the making and the selling. Half the money raised is going to a charity and the other half towards an end of year celebratory trip. Thank you to all the staff and pupils that have supported their business. By Catherine Harris

Budding Journalists
Ms Lorenz has been running a new young journalists club giving students in year 10 the opportunity to experience life in the media! They will be able to report on local news items and have them published on the local guardian website. In taking part they will gain useful work experience, build a portfolio of work; receive a letter of recognition and a professional reference letter to add to CVs and for UCAS applications. For more information go to: yourlocalguardian.co.uk/yourneighbourhood. Here are Wendy Barnes and Sophie Jubehs latest reports:

Twickenham Stadium Transformed On October the 15th all the year 10 students were taken by coach to Twickenham Rugby Stadium to discover more about their future job opportunities. Other schools were there too, but a separate itinerary was provided for each school, so Christs students stayed together. I wasnt sure what to expect, but, I guess, I just wasnt expecting everyone to be so enthusiastic and for it to be fun. There were talks about university and about choosing courses, then we moved into a big hall of stalls manned by people who could tell you about all kinds of careers. They were categorized according to the subjects they related to but, before I got a proper look around, I got distracted by the beauty counter and had a make-over done! What really impressed me was that it was interactive, so other students got to decorate cakes, or make electric circuits, for example. Finally we got a private tour of the stadium and we were able to imagine what it was like for the rugby players as they come out onto the pitch. It really got me thinking about what I could end up doing in the future, its at this age where you start to find out who you really are; and Im thankful for the resources being provided to help me choose. Overall it was a fun two hours; I wish it had been longer! By Sophie Jubeh

A New Look for Christs Pick Everard is one of the leading independent partnerships in the UK. They will be working with Christs Church of England Secondary School to design a new extension to improve the existing school facilities. The extension will create improved access to the school, with a new Reception Area, Learning Resource Centre, PACE and Special Educational Needs Facilities. The remodeling works will take place near the front entrance and reception area of the existing building and require organised working so as not to interrupt the day to day workings of the school. Steve Cummings, the Architect, said, It has been a pleasure working with the school and we look forward to the building work starting in January and the extension being occupied and used in September term 2011. The building is designed to be as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. Photo Voltaic Cells are being installed on the roof, which will provide a 20% reduction in energy use for the building. It will be spacious and there will be more books as well as ICT equipment and lots of extra seating. Pupils and Teachers are delighted about the improvements being made. Mr Burke, the head teacher, said that they had good customer service and Sophie cant wait to see all the new changes to the school. By Wendy Barnes

Maths Master Classes

Richmond, Hammersmith and Fulham, and Wandsworth Boroughs students were invited to take part in a gifted and talented maths programme. Approximately 100 students had to sit what was referred to as stiff maths tests to qualify for the course. 17 were selected, 4 of which were Christs students. The students are Emma Brown, Gabriel Alveteg, Nathan Gane and Jack Moss. They attend the Maths Master classes weekly at St Pauls Boys school. Congratulations from the Maths department!

Messages
A letter from our Chaplain, Ruth Scott

THANK YOU!
A big thank you to all parents, carers and students for coming in on October 19th with lots of silver change. Before school even started the black dove had been covered with the 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins. We raised 94.45 for the Princess Alice Hospice in Esher. Thank you to Josie Gilchriest and her team of helpers for looking after the dove that day.

COMING UP JUST AFTER HALF TERM:

Every year shoeboxes of presents are sent out by Samaritans Purse to children living in poverty around the world. We would love it if as many students as possible take part in this years appeal. All you will need is a medium-sized shoe box. Wrap the box and lid in Christmas wrapping paper and fill it with toys. You will need to decide whether its for a girl or boy and what age group 2-4yrs, 5-9yrs or 10-14yrs. We will provide a label so you stick these details on the box after half term. On November 3rd we will be showing the students a film clip about Operation Christmas Child. On it Georgie Henley, the actor who plays Lucy in the Narnia films, will tell the students about the appeal and the students will see a preview clip from The Voyage of the Dawntreader which is being released this Christmas. We hope that every student will make up a Christmas Shoe Box and bring them in to school between November 4th and November 17th. All the boxes will be collected by our local representative on November 18th. This gives the students one week, including a weekend, to prepare their box. As a parent who hates not being given enough warning of events like this where help at

home is needed, I wanted to let you know in advance that this is happening the week after the half term break. Hopefully that will give you time to get a shoe box, wrapping paper and suitable toys. Thank you so much for all your help and support. We look forward to watching a colourful shoe box wall building up as the students bring in their contribution. Ruth Scott (Chaplain)
