Shalom! ‘The Hebrew language is a very important aspect of our religion and tradition. The Torah is in Hebrew, our prayers are in Hebrew, and most recently the spoken language of Hebrew emerged in Israel. For all of these reasons, it is our hope at Mercaz Limud, that our students get comfortable with decoding the Hebrew language. ‘The best way to leam any new language is with frequent practice. This Hebrew Homework book is a collection of reading and deciphering exercises. Each page can be used at a different level, depending on what your child’s needs are in the moment. The back of the book contains the words of some of our most important and frequently used prayers. Each week, your child’s Hebrew teacher will assign an exercise from the Hebrew Homework book based on what is being taught in class. If you notice that your child is struggling with the homework, or not being challenged by the homework, please speak with your Hebrew teacher about additional pages which might be helpful as a supplement. We want every student to get the most out of their Hebrew experience at Mercaz Limud. In an effort to be environmentally conscience, these books have been designed to be used for several years so that as the students learn more, they can do more difficult exercises, and as they need remedial work, they can go back and do exercises which will help refresh their Hebrew skills. Every week, your child should bring their Hebrew Homework book home with them and then return to Mereaz. Limud with his/her book the following week. Please help us to reinforce this practice so that classes run smoothly and teachers can easily monitor the progress of the students. We look forward to a wonderful year of studying Hebrew! Our tradition tells us that during the time when the Roman Empire ruled the Land of Israel, it was forbidden to praise any kings other than the Roman emperors. Rome sent spies to the ‘synagogues to listen to the prayers, so the Jews would whisper the words that praised God as Ruler forever and ever. Can you think of another example of people who might have to whisper to protect themselves? ow do you show your parents that you love them? Our tradition tells us that during the time when the Roman Empire ruled the Land of Israel, it was forbidden to praise any Kings other than the Roman emperors. Rome sent spies to the synagogues to listen to the prayers, so the Jews would whisper the words that praised God as Ruler forever and ever. Can you think of another example of people who might have to whisper to protect themselves? H ow do you show your parents that you love them? You might bring Dad breakfast in bed or help Mom weed the garden. Another important way to demonstrate your love for your parents is to show respect for them. The MATIN prayer reminds us to love God by respecting and following God’s commandments. We put a mezuzah—a small box containing the words of the YIQW and MATIN }—on the doorposts of our house. Each time we look at the mezuzah it reminds us of our love for God and of our respect for God’s commandments TIN] comes immediately after the Y7QW in the siddur. Practice reading the MANN}. The haftarah is often related by theme to that week’s Torah portion or to a holiday season. When you become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah and are called-up to the Torah for the first time, you will be the one to chant the haftarah that day! Our tradition teaches that the prophets were learned, righteous people who spread the word of the Torah to the Jewish people. They were the conscience of the Jews. The truths taught by the prophets are told in the haftarah and help us to better understand important ideas or values found in the Torah. We say a blessing before chanting the haftarah.
