2 Preface Cyrille Rose's 32 Etudes for Clarinet based on the etudes of Franz Wilhelm Ferling continue to be the corner- stone of clarinet instruction and study in the United States for advanced students from high school through college. Daniel Bonade was a key figure in popularizing the Rose Etudes in the United States. Bonade studied with Henri Lefebvre, a pupil of Cyrille Rose at the Paris Conservatoire, and was recruited by Leopold Stokowski to join the Philadelphia Orchestra, where he served as princ pal clarinetist from 1917 to 1922 and subsequently’ from 1924 to 1930. Bonade later filled the same position in the Cleveland Orchestra from 1933 to 1941, During those years, he taught at the Curtis Institute and the Juilliard School, and became the most influential clarinet teacher in the United States. Bonade used the Rose Etudes as a pri mary source for instructing his students in the develop- ment of proper phrasing, tone, style, and articulation. His students included many clarinetists who later became mas- ter teachers in theit own right, such as Anthony Gigliotti, Mitchell Lurie, and Robert Marcellus, to name only a few. When I began the serious study of the Rose Etudes with, my teacher Dominick Fera, we spent time “fixing” var etudes and correcting misprints, such as incorrect time signatures, a wrong number of beats in a measure, ang questionable notes. Later, when working with students 1 my own, additional errors or inconsistencies were ident fied that required further editing. In order to save valuable lesson time, | decided to prepare an edition for use by students that incorporated all of these corrections. During the process of preparing this edition, I consulted all of the available versions of the Rose 32 Etudes and the Ferling 4 Etudes, Op. 31 for oboe or saxophone, which were impor. tant sources for determining correct notes, articulations and such like. It is sincerely hoped that the end result will be helpful to students and teachers altke. Breath, tempo, and other markings have not been added so that decisions regarding phrasing, tempo, and style may be gleaned from the study of the individual etude using only the markings provided by Rose or Ferling asa guide. T would like to dedicate this edition to my teacher, ‘mentor, and friend Dominick Fera. — Melvin Warner September 2002 About Cyrille Rose and Franz Wilhelm Ferling Cyrille Rose (1830-1903) was one of the most respected, clarinet performers and teachers of the nineteenth century. A student of Hyacinthe Klosé at the Paris Conservatoire, he won the first prize in clarinet in 1847. From 1857 to 1891, he served as clarinetist at the Paris Opéra, where he became known as a specialist; in fact, Charles Gonoud and Jules Massenet turned to him for advice on writing for the instrument. In collaboration with the Buffet Instrument Company, he conducted experiments on the width and taper of the clarinet bore, Rose taught at the Conservatoire from 1876 until his retirement in 1900. A highly respected professor, renowned especially for his insistence on careful phrasing, many of his students went on to win first prizes. He was particularly fond of the music of Weber and edited many of that com- poser’s clarinet works. Today, Rose is remembered for his series of clarinet etudes, most of them arrangements of ‘tudes for other instruments. His best-known collection is the 32 Etudes for Clarinet. Rose based all but one of these studies on Franz Wilhelm Ferling’s 48 Ftudes for Oboe, Op. 31. Rose generally preserved the outline of Ferling’s origi- nal etude, but transposed the key and made alterations at times in the melody, rhythm and articulations to render the etudes stylistically idiomatic for the clarinet: his goal ‘was to develop control and good phrasing in the performer. In two etudes, nos. 16 and 20, Rose incorporated passages from Johann Sebastian Bach’s solo violin works. fanz Wilhelm Ferling (1796-1874) started out as a clarinetist himself and wrote a concerto for that instru- ment, now lost. He became a successful oboist, filling first chair at the Hoftheaters in Brunswick from 1815 to 1859. His compositions include works for oboe and orchestra as well as chamber works, especially oboe duets. As with Rose. hhis most important and successtul works are etudes: the 48 Etudes consist of one fast and one slow etude in every major and minor key.
