Nokia NetAct Optimizer is a key element in the Nokia Operations Solutions portfolio for enhancing the end-to-end performance of mobile services. It is an integrated part of Nokias network management system Nokia NetAct for 2G/3G management. Nokia NetAct Optimizer enables geographical visualization and analysis, and supports manual as well as statistical optimization with automated optimization algorithms. Nokia NetAct Optimizer combines network configuration and performance data acquired from Nokia NetAct Reporter and Nokia NetAct Radio Access Configurator data stores, and enables automated visualization and analysis of GSM and WCDMA performance and configuration. The tool also supports the introduction of new services by offering a powerful way to optimize capacity use and by analyzing network performance in terms of services over GPRS and EDGE. Map based analysis enables rapid identification of problem areas and the root causes. Performance can be optimized with a range of effective algorithms for GSM, WCDMA and multi-technology networks. Highly accurate results are achieved by basing optimization on measured statistics. Optimization results are verified in Nokia NetAct Optimizer before automated provisioning with other NetAct functionality.

Examples of available functionality

Automated, measurement based optimization of GSM network quality The main capacity bottleneck in GSM networks is usually the effective frequency band utilization. When deploying EDGE, high throughputs are available only when the basic network is optimized for good quality. Therefore, even though frequency allocation may be a routine task it needs to be optimized regularly. With Nokia NetAct Optimizer, the allocation process can be highly automated, freeing up key staff to focus on more challenging tasks. Nokia NetAct Optimizer achieves great accuracy by using network measurements and actual configuration parameters for allocation. The performance of even a well-planned network can be improved. The integrated allocation tool has a powerful world-class algorithm specially designed for the needs of modern GSM networks. All frequency hopping types are supported as well as a wide set of other network functionalities. Automated adjacency generation functionality complements the GSM optimization solution.

WCDMA performance analysis and effective launch-phase optimization Launching a modern WCDMA network is far more challenging than the launch of any GSM network. Mobile subscribers expect good service quality, seamless coverage and a wide range of appealing services. Therefore, a fast and effective management process is essential for WCDMA. Nokia NetAct Optimizer provides visibility of the actual network performance. It can automatically display on a geographical view the measured network statistics and configuration parameters. The load on cells can be analyzed easily and performance bottlenecks, caused by faulty installations, parameter or adjacency settings, can be identified rapidly. Nokia NetAct Optimizer can then be used for changing the configuration and for estimating the impact on the network before the changes are automatically downloaded into the network with other NetAct functionality. Nokia NetAct Optimizer also enables seamless management of adjacencies between GSM and WCDMA on a geographical view. Performance measurements used in this process lead to a more accurate adjacency plan.

Service quality balancing for GPRS and EDGE Future optimization will focus on managing service quality in multi-technology networks. This entails raising the objective from network element parameterization to defining, monitoring and optimizing the range of mobile services in the network. The need for this approach exists already as GPRS and EDGE technologies are used to deliver multiple services. Some of these, such as Push to Talk, are very sensitive to delay and throughput times, whereas others may sustain some delay but cannot tolerate any errors. Nokia NetAct Optimizer introduces a mechanism to map services into treatment classes and to analyze the performance of each of the classes over several network domains. When decreased performance is identified, it is possible to drill down into the detail to discover in which network elements the problems occur and the possible causes. Nokia NetAct Optimizer also provides automated functionality to balance the capacity reserved for GPRS traffic in base stations.
