This rollicking, nellol-rolliag film is a lightl)' fictionalized account of the pact made by country-rock icon Grm Parsoro md his wild-ass road manager Phii Kaufnan: whoever died first would hare his body brought out to Joshua Tree National Monumen! in the SoCal desert,
by the one left alive. There, the corpse - prosumably still young and good-looking - would be set on firq thus settin6J the spirit free...or something like that. People just did this sort of thing back then. On September 18th. 1973. Gram Parsons fuifiiled the 'dynrg fust" part of the bargah. The cause was general overindulgence in alcohol and drugs. The fact that Parsons - late of the Byrds md the Flying Buito Brothers, compah'iot ol Keith Richmds and Emvlou Hanis - had checked out for good at age 26 wasn't surprising to myone who knerv him, md Kaufmm knew him better thm anyone. Needless to say, this time Kaufmm won't relent md succeeds in getting his grubby hq.4t on the coffin - and the chase is on. Hilarity and heartbreak, as they say, en-sue. The movie feels like 1973 must have fell and dre sublime music certainl,v sounds like it. As a huge zombie fan and a fan of the video game, I felt like I had to go see the first Resident Etil movie in the theaters, even though I pretty much expected it to suck. I sat tiere watch.ing the begiming, eating my popcom, getting all set to talk about $'hat they should have done better And then the vims got released in the office bidldin& people started dying and there was that bit w.ith dre elevator md oh dim the movie just never let go after that monent. The only thing thai kept it ftom becoming one of the greatest zombie m(xies of all time was the daushophobic atmosphere from being in an underground fortress the whole time. But then there was the ending of the first filrr, $'hich I won't give arvay in this write up- except to repeat what I said to my friend when we left the theater, "Oh my god, we hare to go see dlal again just to try to pressue the studio into actually makirg the sequel." Apparently my plm worked md this September Milla Jovovich will be back to deal a heaping helping of pain to the walking dead and some freaky mutmts that were always a pain in the butt in the video games. The second movie picks up right where the first one left off, so we'll be showhg them both back to back rvith the opshg credits of part two coming on imediately alter the closing credits of part one have left the sceen.
