Chapter 1: Introduction
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
Introduction to Jyotish
In India, astrology is called Jyotish, a Sanskrit word that is derived from two roots, Jyoti and Isha, which respectively mean Light and God. Jyotish is the science of light, both the light of the celestial bodies and the internal light of the soul. It is a gift that was bestowed upon humanity by the ancient rishis (sages) and has been passed on from generation to generation in an oral and written form. Jyotish unfolds the knowledge of how the planets and stars influence an individual human life as well as the life of the nations, and the globe. It sheds light on our lives. Vedic Astrology uses astronomical calculations to determine the positions of the stars and the planets to predict the future of individuals as well as mundane affairs. Therefore, Jyotish is referred to as predictive astrology. Jyotish has numerous practical applications. The main one is predicting ones life events, as well as understanding how the heavenly bodies influence our lives and which particular planets are responsible for favorable and unfavorable occurrences in specific areas of life. Through Vedic Astrology, we can analyze and interpret the quality and intensity of an individuals karma within various aspects of life. One of the most important areas of Vedic Astrology is Upaya (Sanskrit word for method), the body of knowledge that deals with remedial measures for improving and correcting adverse planetary influences, as well as strengthening and 5
promoting the positive areas. Vedic Astrology provides us with tools and means to predict and time the events that are going to take place in ones life, but more so, it renders instruction on how to improve the quality of life in order to enjoy the totality of existence.
PL-Palm comes pre-installed if you have purchased the Palm Handheld Device along with the software from Geo Vision Software Inc., or its distributors. If you have purchased the software application from us separately (without the hardware), please refer to the Installation Guide provided with the software for help with installing the software on your Palm Device. For help with your Hardware, please refer to the Getting Started Guide or the User Guide shipped to you along with the Palm Device. You can also get a copy of these Hardware manuals at the website http://www.palm.com/support/ . If you are a first time user of Palm Device, please take a few moments to learn about the User Interface of your Palm Device below. What you see below is the most inexpensive model of Palm, the m100, you may have a different model, but the interface elements shown below will still be the same.
Graffiti : You use this area to draw the letters and numbers that are instantly
recognized by the Palm Device. Please refer to the Graffiti reference card or the online help with this feature. You can also use the on-screen keyboard that pops-up when you select the two bottom corners of the Graffiti area. 7
within an application. PL-Palm makes innovative use of this feature to enable you to scroll between three different pages, e.g. you could open the Lagna Kundli and then Scroll Up for the Planetary Details and Scroll Down for the Planetary Aspects!
Scroll Buttons : These buttons enable you to scroll upwards and downwards
Application Buttons : The first button on your left is the Menu button, which
you will use to open the Menu Items in PL-Palm.
PL-Palm uses a simple Menu and Scroll bar for Navigation within the application. All the features are just a Tap away. The User interface of PL-Palm consists of four main screens: 1. 2. 3. 4. The Opening screen The File manager screen The Data entry screen The Charts screen
When you first open PL-Palm, you will get in the opening screen which will display your personal details.
After you tap on it, you will get straight to the File manager. The File manager offers you different ways to continue : 9
Changing options and viewing help files can be done through the System menu. To activate the SystemMenu, you can either Tap on the Parasharas Light label at the top of the screen or on the left-most application button on your Palm Device (see Palm User Interface chapter above).
You can create a new chart by tapping on the New button, which will take you to the data entry screen. The same can be done by selecting New on the system menu (tap on the Parasharas Light label at the top, and select New from the Record menu). The File manager screen will always display the names of previously saved charts in alphabetical order. To open an existing chart, first select the person from the list. Then you can go to the charts screen by clicking the Draw the Chart button. The chart will be drawn for the chart you selected. The File manager also lets you edit existing birth data. First select the name from the list, and then tap the Edit button.
Changing Options
When you activate the System Menu, from any screen in Parasharas Light, you will see various options under each heading. Tap on the Options option to activate it. You can also use the keyboard shortcut mentioned against each menu item, to access the menu option directly. System Menu is typically used for changing the configuration of the application, such as the default Chart Type (North Indian, South Indian or Circular), choosing the Ayanamsha (Lahiri, Raman etc.). System Menu Items in PL-Palm are described in detail in a subsequent chapter.
Viewing charts
You will get to the charts screen, either because you selected a name in the File manager screen and tapped Draw the Chart, or by clicking on Done in the birth data screen. Either way, you will get to the same place. The charts screen offers you many kinds of data, which can be selected from the application menu. 11
To select the data you like to see, just tap on the Application Menu on the right hand corner and choose a screen from the Drop-Down Menu Options. Some of the screens have a sub-menu to enable you to choose an option for the selected screen. For instance, the Charts Menu has a Sub-menu with three options for Birth Chart, Sun Chart and Moon Chart. Please tap on the Sub-menu (or the downward pointing arrow) to access the options. To return to the File manager screen (to open a different chart for example), tap on the broad arrow, placed on the left of the persons name. This completes the brief tour through the main screens of the application. In the subsequent chapters you can find more details about each screen.
12
PL-Palm comes to you with a full set of Atlas for USA as well as the rest of the world. Please follow the easy procedure described below to create an accurate chart. NAME enables you to store and retrieve your charts. You can use numbers after the first character to denote Prashna charts for example, 14 Nov 1948, 9:15 p.m. Select the gender Male (M) or Female (F) The Birth Data Entry screen contains several pop-up selection tools that ensure that you make no mistake in the data entry. Tap on the Date and you will see a pop-up listing the Years to choose from, followed by a Calendar to select the exact Date. You can create a chart for the years starting from 1904 to 2035! Similarly tap on the box that displays the Time. In this example 9:15 p.m., the date is presented to you in the 24-hour format. For instance, 4 O clock in the morning will be four Hrs, while 1 o clock in the afternoon will be 13 Hrs. Please remember to select 00 Hrs for Midnight and 12 Hrs for Noon. 13
You can automatically fill in the Latitude and Longitude by entering partial or full name of a city and Tap on the Atlas button. In the next screen, please scroll and select the city that you need. If you cannot find your city, please tap on Cancel and enter the Longitude and Latitude manually. The Time Zone and the Day Light Saving Time (DST) is also automatically filled in for you. If you normally use the current location to cast your charts, you can set the location as default, by tapping on the button Set as default. Tap on the Done Button to complete your selection or Cancel button to go back to the data entry screen.
14
The File Manager is a central place from where you can create new charts, edit existing charts or delete the charts that you do not need. You can reach the File Manager in 2 ways : 1) from the opening screen when you first start the application, and 2) from the chart screen by clicking on the arrow next to the persons name. You can store as many charts as the Memory in your Palm Device allows. For instance, if you have a Palm Device with 2 MB memory, you can easily store over 500 charts, subject to space used by other applications.
Edit
The File manager also lets you edit existing birth data. First select the name from the list, and then tap the Edit button, and you will get into the Birth data screen. The data will automatically be saved after you are done editing. 15
Delete
You can delete charts by tapping the delete button. Be careful! It will not ask you to confirm the deletion of the chart.
16
Before you start using PL-Palm, you should consider reviewing the various system and calculation options available to you.
Select Atlas
PL-Palm has two atlases that work together. One is a World Atlas, with a limited number of major cities world-wide. The other is a regional atlas, containing very complete data for a smaller geographical area. You can install a different regional atlas to suit your particular need best. A large number of regional atlases have been compiled by us, to give you the best possible choice for your area. You can select either atlas (the world atlas or the regional atlas) to be the default. When a new city is entered, PL will first look in the default atlas. So it is advisable to select the atlas that you expect to use most as the default. 17
All atlases include the Latitude, Longitude and the Time Zone data of each city. You will not need books or tables or other software to consult when entering birth data. You can download free Atlas files from our web-site palm.parashara.com. For details on Installation of Additional Atlas Files, please refer to Chapter 8 of the User Guide. You can access this option directly by typing the keystrokes Upwards Swish and A in the Graffiti area.
Tip : You can switch between Atlases, if you have more than one Atlas file loaded on
your Palm Device. This will significantly save time at the time of Data Entry.
Chart Style
PL-Palm offers three types of charts to display the astrological data. Choosing any of these chart types does not change the calculations. This option allows you to view the charts in a format familiar to you. Please tap on the North Indian, South Indian or Circular buttons to set this option. The accompanying icon shows how the chart will be presented. This application remembers the option chosen by you and will always show charts in this format even if you quit and restart the application. You can access this option directly by typing the keystrokes Upwards Swish and S in the Graffiti area.
Tip : There is a significant difference in how the Houses and Signs are presented in
each of these charts. Please refer to any Vedic Astrology Primer for more details.
18
Calculation Options
Ayanamsha:
One of the most important differences between Western and Vedic astrology is the method of calculating planetary positions. Western astrology uses the Tropical zodiac, whereas Vedic Astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac. The implication of this is that Planetary positions calculated in these two systems are about 23 to 24 degrees apart. The exact difference in longitude of the Tropical and Sidereal zodiac is called the Ayanamsha. The Ayanamsha changes every year and there are different ways of calculating it. The Chitra Paksha Ayanamsha, commonly referred to as Lahiri Ayanamsha, is the most widely used and set as the Default in the program. If you dont have a particular preference for a different Ayanamsha, then you do not have to do anything. PL-Palm supports most of the popular Ayanamsha values. Please tap on the Ayanamsha of your choice and all the charts will be calculated using this Ayanamsha. You can access this option directly by typing the keystrokes Upwards Swish and C in the Graffiti area.
Miscellaneous Options
This option enables you to quickly jump to the Chart from the data entry screen, instead of the File Manager. You can also set your preference regarding displaying of outer planets in all the charts. 19
You can access this option directly by typing the keystrokes Upwards Swish and M in the Graffiti area.
20
Scroll Arrows
The Scroll Arrow is an innovative user-interface that enables you to move easily between multiple screens without using the menu system. In order to use this feature, just tap on either the left/right or the top/bottom scroll arrows at the top of the screen. For instance, if you are viewing the Birth Chart, you can tap on the Right Arrow to see the Planetary Details. Now we will look at each chart/table that can be viewed in the Charts screen separately.
View Charts
The default Birth Chart is displayed as soon as you select Draw the Chart in the File Menu. Please refer to the chapter on Opening an existing Chart above for details. 21
You can switch between Sun (Surya) chart, Moon (Chandra) Chart and the Birth (Lagna) chart from the drop-down menu just below the Main Menu. See the Configuring Options section for changing the default Chart Style.
Planetary Degrees
This screen provides details of the Planetary positions and the Nakshatras associated with each Sign. You can also see view the Pada (quarter) of the Nakshatra and the Nakshatra Lord.
Shodashvarga
There are sixteen Vargas (divisional charts), including the birth chart. Most of the Vargas relate to one particular area of life, some relate to all areas of life like the Birth Chart itself. 22
The Vargas have Sanskrit names, in most cases simply the Sanskrit number of the division. For example the Navamsha is the 1/9th division and Nava means nine. You can see any of the Varga charts by selecting a chart from the Sub-menu under the main menu of Shodashvarga.
Planetary Dignity
This screen provides the Dignity of each of the Planets in the Lagna Chart as well as the Navamsha Chart. The planetary dignities are an important consideration in evaluating how auspiciously the planets will act in the chart.
Lordships
This screen provides the Lordship of each House in the Lagna Chart as well as the important Divisional (Varga) Charts. 23
You can see the Lordship of charts other than Lagna Chart by selecting the Sub-Menu below the Main Menu.
Vargavimsopaka (Vimsopaka)
This screen gives the Vimsopaka calculation for 4 different varga groups for each of the nine grahas. The Vimsopaka score indicates how auspicious the planet will be due to its placement in the divisionals charts. Therefore, planets with a higher Vimsopaka, will act auspiciously across the various areas of life represented by the group of vargas the score is based on. The range of values is 0-20, even though each extreme is very rare. A value around 10-12 represents average.
Planetary Aspects
This screen provides the complete Aspects received by each Planet on the left from each of the other 9 Planets listed at the top. A value 0 means there is no aspect at all, and 60 signifies a full aspect.
Planetary Avasthas
This screen displays the state of each Planet calculated in three different ways Jagrad, Baladi and Deepta. Avastha means state and gives a clue of how the planet will behave. 24
The first group Jagrad describes one of 3 states. Jagrad means Awake, Swapna means Dreaming, and Sushupti means Sleeping. The second group Baladi describes one of 5 states: Bala (infant), Kumara (youthful), Yuva(Adolescent), Vridha (old), and Mrita (dead). The third group, Deepta describes a set of 9. Deepta (radiant), Swastha (confident), Mudita (rejoicing), Shanta (serene), Deena (poor), Dukhita (unhappy), Vikala (Distressed), Khala (cruel), and Kruddha (angry).
The Shad Bala is a very comprehensive indication of the strengths of the planets. This screen provides a detailed view of the Shad Bala Planetary strength is derived from six different methods : Sthana, Dig, Kaala, Chesta, Naisargika and Drig. 25
Ashtakavarga
You can view the Ashtakvarga for each Planet on this screen along with the Sarvashtakvarga. The Ashtakavarga figure in a particular sign shows in how many favorable positions that sign is relative to the natal planets. When that planet transits through a sign with a high score, its effects will be more favorable, a transit through a sign with a low score will be unfavorable. The Sarvashtakavarga score for a sign are simply the sum of each planets score for that sign. By default, the opening screen displays the Ashtakvarga for Sun. You can select any other planet (including Lagna) or the Sarvashtakvarga from the Sub-Menu below the Main Menu.
Dashas
This screen shows the Vimshottari Dasha. You can see the Maha Dasha and the Antardasha for each Maha Dasha period. 26
Please use the Up and Down Scroll buttons provided at the right to scroll through the full period of 120 Years.
Gemstone Prescription
This screen provides an Interpretation of your Lagna Chart in the form of a Prescription of Gemstones. There are three gemstones prescribed. Life Stone The gem of the lagna lord is a good stone to wear at all times. It gives health, vitality, general success and wellbeing. Punya (Lucky) Stone The gem for the fifth lord is particularly lucky, while also being good for creative energy and children. Bhagya (Fortune) Stone The gem for the ninth lord brings fortune.

Chapter 9 : PL Exchange
CHAPTER 9 PL EXCHANGE
Introduction to PL Exchange
PL Exchange is a desktop utility specifically designed to be used with the Palm editions of the Vedic Astrology products by GeoVision Software Inc. It is an utility designed to exchange birth data content between the desktop version of Parasharas Light and the Palm version. The idea behind PL Exchange has been to avoid duplicate data entry, whether you entered the data first on your Palm, or first on your Desktop. PL Exchange can be used to copy pre-calculated charts from your desktop to your Palm device and vice versa. It also provides you an interface whereby you can select charts from any given path on your machine and mark them for transfer, after having a preview of the same.
Running PL Exchange
If you have installed PL Exchange on your machine, you can run it through Programs->GeoVision->PL Exchange. Alternatively, you can double click PLExchange.exe from the directory where you installed PL Exchange.
Using PL Exchange
There are 4 main steps which have to be followed in order to upload /download /transfer charts to and from your Palm. The PL Exchange screen has these steps numbered, and you are advised to go through them in the same order. 31
1. Select Palm User Name : You will be provided with a list of all users configured for HotSync process through Palm Desktop. It is most likely, you use only one Palm device, and therefore you have only one user listed. By default, the first (or only) user in the list will be selected. You may select the user for whom you wish to carry out the HotSync operation. The movement of chart data to and from the Palm device will take place only for the selected user name. 2. Select Folders : PL Exchange will synchronize files between your desktop and your Palm. You have to specify which folders on your desktop should be used for this process. Upload from : Please specify the folder name from where you would like to copy charts to your Palm. For this folder only, the charts will be listed and you will be able to make a selection for uploading. By default, it is set to the path that you had selected while installing PL Exchange. You can change this path anytime by clicking the adjacent browse button. The path once changed will be saved automatically and the next time you run PL Exchange, the Upload from field will be set to the last selected path. 32
Download to : Please specify the folder name from where you would like to store the charts downloaded from your Palm device. If you like to use PL Exchange to copy charts from your Palm in order to open them in Parasharas Light (desktop version), then the easiest way is to select the charts directory of Parasharas Light ( probably the same directory as you selected as the upload directory). This way, you will see any of the charts created on the Palm within Parasharas Light, without needing to change directories in the File manager. If you like to use PL Exchange just to backup your charts on the Palm, you should not select the charts directory, but select any other directory that you like to use for backups. If you do not have such a backup directory yet, you can create it using the Windows Explorer. Whatever directory you select, your settings will be saved automatically and restored when your run PL Exchange. 3. Select charts to be transferred to Palm : Refresh : Pressing this button refreshes the Chart List. The Chart List is emptied and is refilled with all the charts present in the Upload from directory. Chart List : This list will hold the names of the charts present in the Upload from directory. There are two options here. a) To preview the chart, click on the name itself, and the chart as well as the birth data are shown on the right side of the screen. b) Click on the checkbox on the left side of the name, to mark a chart to be downloaded. When you actually start the downloading (step 4), all charts that are checked will be downloaded. Select All : By checking this check box, all the charts listed in the Chart List are marked for uploading. If you uncheck it again, all charts will be unchecked. 4. Transfer Charts : You can specify the activity that should take place, whenever a HotSync operation takes place. You can either specify the upload action or the download action, or both. In case both upload and download 33
activities are chosen, the download process would precede the upload process. Upload charts to Palm : If this check box is checked, all the charts marked for uploading are transferred to your Palm, whenever the next HotSync operation takes place. Download charts from Palm: If this check box is checked, all the charts present on you palm device will be downloaded to the directory specified by the Download to path. To actually start the file exchange with your Palm, you have to press the HotSync button on the Palm.

Troubleshooting/FAQs
Q 1. What is PL Exchange?
PL Exchange is a Windows based desktop utility specifically designed to be used with the Palm editions of the Vedic Astrology products by GeoVision Software Inc. It is an utility designed to exchange birth data content between the desktop version of Parasharas Light and the Palm version. The idea behind PL Exchange has been to avoid duplicate data entry, whether you entered the data first on your Palm, or first on your Desktop.
Q 5. Why do I not have any users listed in the Select User list?
This means that so far you have not configured any user for your Palm device using Palm Desktop. Probably, you have not yet installed the software that came with your Palm on your PC. Only those user names are listed here who have been added using the Palm Desktop utility. If you want to know more about how to create new users using Palm Desktop, refer to the online help of Palm Desktop. 35
Q 8. Suppose my Upload from and Download to paths are the same. Will the downloaded charts overwrite any existing charts, in case they bear the same name?
No, all charts downloaded from your Palm device are saved with unique names. There is no possibility of overwriting of charts during the download operation. However, there is a good chance that you will get duplicate files. Every time you download the charts from the Palm, a new set of files is created, even if the birth data was not altered on the Palm.
Q 11. If one checks both the Upload charts to Palm and Download charts from Palm check boxes, what operation will take place first?
If both the check boxes are checked, charts from Palm will be downloaded prior to uploading any charts to your Palm Device. 36
Q 12. What if even after making appropriate selections, no charts are moved to and from my Palm device?
There can be several reasons for the same. A few of them could be: a) You may have not selected any user name for whom to move charts. b) The user name you selected is not the proper one for the Palm that you did the HotSync with. c) The conduit that is responsible for movement of data, may not have been registered/installed properly. You may need to re-install PL Exchange. d) There might be some problems with the HotSync service. You may need to re-install Palm Desktop. In case you face any problems using PL Exchange, please feel free to contact us at sales@parashara.com.
