Harvard University, Center for European Studies, "Banks, the State, and Economic Governance in Germany." December 14, 1992. RESEARCH IN PROGRESS I presently have three research projects underway: 1. My major project focuses on explaining institutional change in advanced capitalist economies. I am approaching this along two tracks: The first track is primarily theoretical and focuses on extending theories about path dependency and institutional complementarity. The second track draws on this theoretical work to analyze how the financial systems of Germany, Italy, France, United Kingdom and other European states have changed over the past two decades. This second track presently involves the writing of a co-authored book-length monograph with Mary OSullivan, Associate Professor at the Wharton School. In this book we utilize actor-centered institutional theory to explain the transformation of financial market governance in Europe since the early 1980s. 2. The second project is a consortial research endeavor involving six European universities. The project is entitled Institutional Changes and Trajectories of Socio-Economic Development Models. Its primary objective is to generate a comparative empirical database and theoretical analyses of the transformation of advanced capitalist economies since the 1970s. The consortium is funded by a 1.2 million euro grant from the European Commission and runs from 2009 to 2011. I am part of the research group based at Kings College London. 3. I have also begun a new project that aims to explain the politics behind the emergence of the European carbon Emissions Trading System.
