Always the Bridesmaid? You Can
Wear the Dresses Again
(NewsUSA) - And youll be able to wear
it again! is a phrase often used around
bridesmaids dresses. Because a ridiculously
expensive lime-green taffeta shepherdess
gown is appropriate for almost any occasion,
and the Peter Pan collar is poised to make a
comeback any century now.
If youre one of the many women who has
piles of Pepto-Bismol-colored rufes stuffed
in the back of her closet, never fear -; you will
be able to wear that dress again. Host an old
bridesmaids dress party, and the good times
may even blot out the embarrassment of having
had to wear that dress in the rst place.
Where to start? The concept is simple -- invite
all of your girlfriends over, and tell them to wear
their most hideous bridesmaid dress. Not only
will you get to rewear the bridesmaids dresses
of weddings past, youll also get to laugh at
some of the more hideous outts. Note: if you
were a bridesmaid at a friends wedding, either
dont invite her or try not to wear the dress she
chose, even if it does include a tutu and puffed
sleeves.
Adding an inexpensive spin to classic elegance
is the way to go. Skip the chips and dip in favor
of a fruit-and-cheese platter. For a refreshing
twist on champagne, the traditional wedding
libation, pick up a few bottles of a fruit-avored
sparkling wine. Arbor Mist (arbormist.com),
which is known for fruit and wine combinations
like Strawberry White Zinfandel and Blackberry
Merlot, has recently released a line of sparkling
wines. Both the Peach Sparkle and the
Raspberry Sparkle combine light and crisp
sparkling wine with natural fruit, creating the
perfect refreshment for a get-together with your
girlfriends.
For entertainment, ask each woman to tell the
story behind her bridesmaid dress. You can
also have fun playing a wedding-themed round
of Pictionary or charades. You can also hold
a vote to nd out, for once and for all, which
one of you had to endure the wearing the worst
bridesmaid dress.
For more information about Arbor Mist wines,
visit www.arbormist.com.
World Trade Center beam
will rise again
Sept. 11 memorial to be installed later this
month at DPS
BIG RAPIDS After two years of e-mails,
phone calls and one trip to New York City, Big
Rapids Public Safety Deputy Director Warren
Hansens vision of installing a piece of the
World Trade Center in front of the DPS building
will soon come to fruition.
An 8-foot long structural H-beam from the
World Trade Center will be put on permanent
display in front of the DPS building at the end of
the month. DPS is waiting for electrical wire to
be installed for lighting before pouring concrete
to mount the beam.
We feel really special to have this piece of
history here in Big Rapids, Hansen said. To
be able to put it out in front of our building is a
very personal thing. Our reghters and police
ofcers relate to it on a real personal level.
Hansen worked with the Port Authority of New
York and New Jersey for about two years to
obtain the beam. The piece of the Twin Towers
was provided free of charge, as long as it was
for a municipality or nonprot organization and
displayed as a public memorial. Hansen drove
to New York City in April to bring the beam to
Big Rapids.
DPS had Simonds International cut one end of
the beam on an 11-degree angle so it could be
stood up on end. The beam was then taken to
Ferris State University in July, where instructors
welded the 2,800-pound beam to a 3-foot by
2-foot 1-inch thick steel base.
The walkway leading up to DPS front door has
been torn up in preparation for the monument.
Once mounted in front of DPS, pieces of broken
concrete will be stacked around the base to
resemble the wreckage of the towers.
When I rst started looking at this thing, it gave
me goosebumps, said Ferris welding professor
Dave Murray. Its awesome to be able to be a
part of this project.
Starting this fall, Ferris welding students will
research the beam to discover where it was
forged and where it was located in one of the
towers.
We (the instructors) think we can pretty much
gure out where this beam was, but were going
to do the research as a student activity, Murray
said. Because this H-beam is so unique to the
design of the building, I think students are going
to nd out where it was located pretty easily.
Although the beam has been in Big Rapids
since April, Hansen is still awestruck by its
presence.
It was our brothers and sisters that lost their
lives out there that day in New York, Hansen
said. This is going to be a really good reminder
every day of how proud we are to be reghters
and police ofcers.

Get the Facts About Cataracts
and Surgery
(NewsUSA) - Though cataracts are the leading
cause of vision loss worldwide, myths persist
about their cause and treatment. Cataracts
affect nearly 22 million Americans age 40
and older. By age 80, more than half of all
Americans will have cataracts, according to the
National Eye Institute.
Cataracts are not preventable, but they are
treatable, said Richard P. Mills, MD, and
the best way to ensure vision stays healthy
for a lifetime is to schedule a visit with an
ophthalmologist. More than 90 percent of
the people who have cataract surgery regain
useful vision.
As the eyes lens, located behind the pupil,
grows older, its cells die and accumulate.
The result is blurred vision and fuzzy
images. Eye injuries, certain medications and
diseases such as diabetes are also known to
cause cataracts. In the early stages, stronger
lighting and eyeglasses may lessen vision
problems caused by cataracts. But at a certain
point, cataract surgery -- the most frequently
performed operation in the country -- may be
necessary. There are four common cataract
myths to dispel:
* MYTH 1: Eye drops can prevent or dissolve
cataracts.
o FACT: The Food and Drug Administration
has not approved any drops that cure or delay
cataracts. Since cataracts are not a substance,
there is nothing for the drops to dissolve.
* MYTH 2: Close-up tasks like reading or
sewing make cataracts worse.
o FACT: Cataracts are not caused by how
people use their eyes. However, cataracts
likely become more noticeable during close
work. One sign of a cataract is the need for
more light to do the same activities.
* MYTH 3: Cataracts are reversible.
o FACT: The lens naturally clouds as it ages;
this process is unavoidable and irreversible.
But its progress can be slowed by quitting
smoking, eating a balanced diet and wearing
sunglasses.
If you are age 65 and older and you think
you have cataracts, you may qualify for a
free eye exam. The eye exams are provided
by a program called EyeCare America, an
organization that works with nearly 7,000
volunteer ophthalmologists across the U.S.
and Puerto Rico. Visit www.eyecareamerica.
org to see if you or a loved one qualies for
this care.
Eyeing the Window to Your Health
(NewsUSA) - Some say the eyes are windows
to the soul. But did you know that the eye
disease age-related macular degeneration
(AMD) can also indicate increased risk of heart
attack or stroke?
EyeCare America, a public service program
of the Foundation of the American Academy
of Ophthalmology, is raising awareness about
AMD and its potential window to health
through your eyes.
Imagine seeing black holes in your eld of
vision instead of your family, your garden
or your favorite book. More than 10 million
Americans suffer from AMD. AMD occurs when
abnormal blood vessels grow under the eyes
macula, where the sharpest, central vision
occurs. Its the leading cause of vision loss for
those 65 and older. While not curable, AMDs
advancement can be delayed and treated,
leading to many more years of healthy vision
for those who detect it early through an eye
exam.
This same blood vessel damage can also
indicate risk for heart attack or stroke -- as
much as 8 to 10 times greater. An Australian
study noted that among those whose health
was followed for a number of years, subjects
with AMD had more than double the incidence
of heart attack or stroke.
Eye exams let patients know of increased risk
for other serious health problems.
EyeCare America provides eye exams at no
out-of-pocket cost to people 65 and older and
offers online medication assistance information.
Eye exams are provided by a corps of nearly
7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists across the
U.S. and Puerto Rico.
Those interested in the program can visit www.
eyecareamerica.org to see if they are eligible.
The organizations online referral center also
enables friends and family members to nd out
instantly whether their loved ones are eligible to
be matched with a volunteer ophthalmologist.
EyeCare America is designed for people who
are U.S. senior citizens or legal residents
who havent seen an ophthalmologist in three
or more years. Additional information can be
found at www.eyecareamerica.org.
3 Ways to Cut Your Energy Bill
(NewsUSA) - During hotter days, the wonderful
coolness of our air-conditioned homes is
comforting until the whopping energy bill
arrives. The American Lighting Association
(ALA) offers the following easy ways to use
less energy and save money.
Replace bulbs with CFLs
Switch out incandescent light bulbs with
compact uorescent versions.
A compact uorescent lamp (CFL) can provide
the same amount of light as an incandescent
by using only one-quarter of the electricity,
explains Joe Rey-Barreau, education consultant
for the ALA and an associate professor at the
University of Kentuckys School of Interior
Design.
One of the great myths regarding lighting
today is that the federal government is
banning incandescent lighting, Rey-Barreau
says. This is false. Incandescent lighting is
not being banned. The new legislation is only
affecting the standard 100-watt incandescent
bulb, which will no longer be sold beginning in
2012. However, an incandescent bulb that uses
only 72 watts will replace it. This new bulb uses
halogen incandescent technology to produce a
more efcient incandescent bulb.
Install ceiling fans
Install a ceiling fan in frequently occupied rooms.
Ceiling fans use a fraction of the electricity of
an AC unit. Therefore, the thermostat can be
raised six degrees -- say, to 78 degrees -- and
make a room feel as comfortable as if the
ambient temperature were really 72 degrees.
Utilize lighting controls
Lighting controls are an excellent option for
saving energy. It is not necessary to invest in a
comprehensive control system where the entire
house is rewired. There are simple and less-
expensive methods for controlling light to save
energy, such as motion sensors, photocells
that operate according to light levels, timers
and dimmers.
Thanks to breaking technology, lighting has
become more efcient than ever before. Visit
an ALA-member lighting showroom to receive
professional tips on energy-saving. To nd
a local ALA-member showroom, go to www.
americanlightingassoc.com.
Tips to Start the School Year on the
Right Track
(NewsUSA) - Back-to-school mayhem presents
a number of challenges for parents. Each
morning there are breakfasts to make, lunches
to pack and extracurricular schedules to track
-- all while trying to get to work on time. So,
how do you navigate the morning chaos and
hold onto your sanity? With these helpful tips,
you can make your back-to-school mornings
easier:
1. Stick to a strict bedtime schedule. According
to the Mayo Clinic, school-age children need
10-11 hours of sleep each night. Making sure
kids are well rested will help avoid oversleeping
and wasted time getting them out of bed each
morning.
2. Get prepared the night before. Pack all
school bags as soon as homework is nished,
and lay out school outts prior to bedtime for
the next day. This shortens the list of morning
chores and adds a few extra minutes of rest.
Also, dont wait until early morning to pack a
rushed lunch with little nutrition value. Preparing
the night beforehand enables parents to pack

food with nutrients and vitamins, not just
potato chips and snack packs. For even better
efciency, plan lunches a week ahead.
3. Find a quick and balanced breakfast option.
Not many parents have time for eggs and
pancakes each morning, but there are quick,
quality alternatives. Stock up on cereals that
kidswill enjoy and are high in ber, folic acid,
iron, and vitamin C. Try Malt-O-Meal for family
favorite varieties packed with whole grains. As
an added bonus, Malt-O-Meal is available in
resealable bags, which reduces the amount
of packaging consumers have to dispose of or
recycle by 75 percent. (BagTheBox.com)
4. Make a weekly calendar of activities.
Organize each family members schedule to
make sure kids are where they need to be
at the correct times. Between extracurricular
activities, like sports, clubs, study groups, jobs
and friends, it can be a challenge to establish
any sort of routine. Set up car pools in case
some events overlap. Input alerts in your
phone, and set an alarm for each to avoid
temporary mental lapses.
A Bright Spot for Your
Rainy-Day Savings
(NewsUSA) - Ben Franklin once declared, A
penny saved is a penny earned. Yet, equally
enlightening are his thoughts on expenses:
Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink
a great ship.
And there are plenty of leaks that can scuttle
an already-tight budget. For instance, a spouse
idled by the sour economy, a fender bender with
the family car, or an unexpected hospitalization.
Thats why nancial advisors recommend that
you have a rainy-day fund -- enough liquid
assets to cover three to six months worth of
emergency living expenses. In case of nancial
emergency, access to additional money will
save you from relying on credit cards or loans
that simply compound the problem.
When starting an emergency fund, there are a
few key points to take into consideration:
1. Determine what amount is best for you. Most
experts agree that you should keep between
three and six months worth of your living
expenses set aside in your emergency fund.
Your specic situation -- whether you have
children, carry substantial debt and types of
insurance coverage you have -- will determine
what amount is best for you. Examine your
situation -- your income and your needs -- to
decide how much you should save.
2. Start small. Starting an emergency fund can
be as simple as depositing $100 into your high-
interest savings account. But before you begin,
be sure that youre meeting your basic living
expenses. And as you build your emergency
fund, be sure youre also reducing your
spending and avoiding debt.
3. Stick to a schedule. Get into the habit of
making regular deposits. Whether it is weekly,
bi-weekly or monthly, create a schedule and
stick to it. Once you make saving automatic,
you wont even have to think about it.
4. Consider an online savings account. In many
cases, an online savings account may make
more sense than an account at a traditional,
bricks-and-mortar bank. Thats because many
traditional banks are not currently offering a
savings option with interest rates high enough
to meaningfully beat ination. In addition, an
online savings account is a reliable way to
manage your money.
AAA and Discover Bank partnered to bring
members highly competitive rates on an online
savings account. The AAA Online Savings
Account is a great option to begin building a
rainy-day fund:
* Preferred member rates over ve times the
national savings average
* $500 minimum opening deposit and no
minimum balance required
* FDIC insurance up to $250,000
To open your Online Savings Account, visit
AAA.com/Deposits.
Stop Bullying Before It Starts
(NewsUSA) - Whats the best way to stop
a bully? Dont let him (or her) become one.
Multiple studies have shown that teaching
children positive social skills and taking
proactive steps to prevent and discourage
delinquent behavior can go a long way toward
preventing bullying and providing a more
effective learning environment.
Unfortunately, childhood bullying has become
a 24/7 problem, and the anonymity of the
Internet makes it more difcult to identify and
punish bullies. But programs in which schools
and the community work together to prevent
bullying and reduce disruptive behavior can
make a difference.
The benets of bullying prevention programs
include freeing teachers to teach, instead
of spending their time disciplining students.
These programs also cut down on chaos in
the classroom and foster a positive learning
environment.
Michelle Molina, president and CEO of
PeaceBuilders says that Children need to
be given the skills so they can solve these
problems and adults need to be the guides on
the sides.
According to the nonprot organization Child
Trends, PeaceBuilders has been found to
work in increasing conict resolution skills and
reducing aggression and bullying.
PeaceBuilders is a program designed to foster
a positive environment not only in schools, but
at home and in the community. The program is
already in place in thousands of schools across
the United States, where it is successfully used
to prevent and decrease bullying and other
disruptive behavior.
PeaceBuilders is designed to combat bullying
early through a combination of school-based
programs, parent training and community
outreach. Parents are a critical part of the
program, ensuring that practices are duplicated
at home. The PeaceBuilders program can be
tailored to ages and developmental levels from
preschool through high school.
The program works by rst identifying risk
factors for bullying, including violent or
aggressive behavior, drug use and tobacco
use. PeaceBuilders provides tools to foster
civil behavior and to discourage disruptive
behavior. Then a roadmap is created that
includes regularly praising children and teens
for good behavior at school and at home, while
discouraging bad behavior. Involving parents in
the behavior improvement before adolescence
helps communities create a way of life that
encourages people to be nicer to each other.
