Why was unemployment endemic in Britain between the two world wars?

The First World War as well as the Second World War were extremely destructive for the entire world and even more for Britain. The country of her Majesty was one of the main component of the Allies and thus it was one of the main site of war. Many aircraft had to de charged their deadly weapons upon British towns and population and a great majority of the male were soldiers in the army. All these created a sort of immense discrepancy in nearly all the sectors of the British people and it result in very difficult condition of life. Unemployment being one of the major result of the wars. One of the main period of destructive unemployment was between the world wars were industries had to try to rebuilt themselves in a climate of chaos where everybody was affected mental or physically by the war. There was different reasons to explain this high unemployment figures and this assignment is will aim to go through all of them. Unemployment in Britain during the inter wars period was due to many reasons. The reason that explain the greater part of employment was the involuntary unemployment. 'Involuntary employment is that which arises through no choice of the employable body'.1 There is no work available for him or her to attain to. He is thus incapable to work because he has not been proposed one. It is not surprising to observe that after the First World War, there have been a certain climate of chaos in Britain. After all, the British people has been one of the most affected population that have survived that war. Many of its people went to war; some came back, other did not. And the remaining population was mostly composed of women who had to work as hard as they could to survive with their children. The main reason for unemployment was the destruction of the factories. Many of the sites were aircraft have bombed have been in industrialised zones and thus there were many factories that have been demolish, taking always hundred or works with them. It was very difficult for the British People to find jobs. During the war, the industrialisation Britain have changed in order to provide the war of materials that would be useful to it. However, with the cessation of the war, these materials were no longer demanded and many factories had to either changed the product that they manufactured or be bankrupt. This did not help to change the chaotic crisis that Britain was outgoing. Industries had to adopt new reforms in order to survive and lesser jobs were available.

One cannot forget the fact that employment in Britain in during the two World Wars was also an issue of voluntary unemployment where 'employable body choose not to work for many of one reason. The area of voluntary unemployment needs iterating due to its disputed nature and indeed questionable extent.'2 Voluntary employment was as much a problem as involuntary unemployment. There are many reason why someone who is employable would not want to work. One of the main hypothesis would be melancholia and depression due to the aftermath effect of the war. It was true that this particular war had left more marks than any other one. It happen at a time when Freud talked about the psychoanalysis and if these disciplines of the mind were applied to this period, it would certainly be find that the effects of the war were beyond imaginary. This explain the lack of desire to work, and even sometime, to live of some Britain people. Another major factor for the unemployment of that period is the geographical employment. The Industrial Revolution had touch certain specific areas of Britain and in the same mode unemployment touched violently only certain parts of Britain. In the maintain there was many jobs available but in some restricted areas Scotland, some Wales and some particular parts of mainly in small towns and villages of Britain countryside, it was extremely difficult to find any works. People had to migrate to the areas where jobs were available in order to obtain one to make their family live. Another reason for the high rate of unemployment in Britain in the period of the inter wars was the problem of the difficulties to match with other countries in the world trade. Britain has always been a prosperous country and was one of the first to undergo international trades. However, as it as 'busy' with the war, many other countries had emerges and placed themselves securely on the world market. As it as difficulties the world market, the production begun to slower and less people were needed in Britain industries. It created a lot of employment as many industries had to fire some of their workers in order to be able to survive. During the inter wars, Britain had known a real problem because of the high rate of unemployment. This was due to many reason as there was also many types of unemployment. Geographical, voluntary, involuntary employment or even a too much competitive market are the causes of this terrible period of Britain history.
