you for your opinion People seek you out They want to hear what
you have to say, and they will pay for it
One of the important decisions you will have to make is to treat
your author business like a real business I talk about this more in a
later chapter, but let me say right now that this can be a very lucra-
tive business - if you do certain things You need to keep your costs
down, but you also need to invest in your business If you are look-
ing for massive credibility - the kind of credibility that makes you a
sought-after expert, then you need to invest some time and money
into learning this business This ebook is a great place to start, be-
cause you are going to learn some incredible secrets that will literally
change your life by changing the way you conduct your business

really want is to be an author FAST! This is the book that will help
you do it

Write Fast, Publish Cheap, Sell More
As my friend Joel Orr says, The longest journey starts with a single
MIS-step In other words, doing the wrong thing at the beginning
of a project will cost you a lot of time and money later on Writing a
book can be hard work It may take you a long time to Write, Publish
and Sell However, if you make mistakes early in the process, it may
never happen at all I know so many authors who tell me I have
been writing a book for ____ years I hope to fnish it someday

On the other hand, my friend, and business partner, Mike Litman
says, You dont need to get it right, you just need to get it going
Now, at frst glance, it may seem that these two philosophies are exact
opposites But, they are not It is important to get things started the
right way But, it is also important to get things started! Too many
authors are afraid to write a book because they are just plain afraid
They arent making mistakes early, because they never do anything
My Philosophy - Write for Money
I have learned from both Joel and Mike I needed to learn, because
I write for money Early in my career, I made the decision to write for
a proft So, I write Fast, and then I Publish Cheap so that I do not
waste either time or money Then, I sell lots of books so that I can
make money
Read This Book and Take My Advice, and You Can
Make Money Too
If you read this ebook carefully, and follow my advice, you will get
your book completed quicker, get it into print at a low cost, and sell
more copies There are only a few tricks of the trade you have to
remember, and the process is really quite simple
Fiction or Non-Fiction?
Lets get one thing straight, right from the beginning The informa-
tion I am about to share with you works for any type of book I dont
care if it is fction or non-fction My books are non-fction books, but
I help many fction authors The quick and easy steps you need to
take to Write Fast, Publish Cheap & Sell More are the same for both
fction and non-fction A book is a book!
5
Okay, I said it I believe that writing, publishing and selling fction
and non-fction books are similar, if not identical But of course, you
dont believe me! Fair enough And, I am willing to admit that writ-
ing fction and non-fction may require some different skill sets So,
to help you, and to keep the argument to a dull roar, I do give each
book type (fction versus non-fction) some unique writing tips In
fact, I created a separate chapter for each one Check out Chapter 4
Fast Fiction and Chapter 5 Fast Non-Fiction
For Book Success, Solve Problems
Every book, in fact every product you sell solves a problem Fic-
tion books sell because they solve entertainment, escape, romance,
or emotional problems Non-fction books sell because they solve
how-to, education, or information problems If you are not solving a
problem, you are not going to sell that book to anyone
Recently, a woman at one of my workshops said, I wrote a romance
novel that would be perfect for men to read especially men who are
having trouble with their relationships WRONG! Men, especially
men who are having trouble with their relationships, do not buy
romance novels frequently! Do you get the point I am making here?
Write your book for a specifc audience, and solve their problems

dering if someone will ever publish your book, then you will receive

ies Being a successful author is a terrifc feeling You are an artist

have it as well

You Need A Plan
The major difference between successful authors and those who fail
is that successful authors have a plan They are not haphazard, wait-
ing for the big break Successful authors know what they want,
and create plans to achieve it
In all three sections of this book, Write Fast, Publish Cheap, and
Sell More, I am going to coach you to create a specifc plan This is
especially true in the third section, Sell More, because even authors
with great writing and publishing plans often make huge, costly mis-
takes in the selling stage because they do not have a good plan
If you are the type of person who hates to make plans, then you
have some changing to do Just ask yourself this: Which is more
painful- spending a little time working on your plan, or spending the
rest of your life thinking about the money and time you wasted with
that book that was going to be so successful but was not?
I planned every one of my successful books, and did not plan any of
the failures It is quite simple Of my 18 books, eight were Best-Sell-
ers Two were failures The rest were in the middle of the spectrum,
although two of them made me a lot of money without selling many
copies My two failures came when I wrote books for a market I did
not know well, and did not have a strong interest in In other words, I
did not have a good plan for the failures
If you are ready to achieve success, then you are in the right place
Get going, and dont stop until you have reached your goals and
your readers have your book

How Fast is Fast, How Cheap is Cheap,
and How Much is More?

You just received an eBook with the title Write Fast, Publish Cheap ,
& Sell More so it is logical to ask the question above If you are going
to put in the effort to learn the techniques and strategies to get your
book into the hands of buyers, you need to understand the rewards
you are going to get for the effort I was just working with an au-
thor who asked me these questions Actually, she was saying that
she wanted to write faster, but was fnding it diffcult to do She was
using Joel Orrs incredible program that helps coaches and consultants
write a book very quickly My client, Diane, felt guilty because it was
taking her 6 weeks to write the book, and Joel coaches his clients to
write faster than that Diane and I came up with a quote that I want
to share with you at the very beginning of this book It puts every-
thing into perspective Are you ready for it? Here it is: Slow is faster
than never I think it is important to understand this point of view
before you read the rest of my book I teach authors how to Write
Fast, Publish Cheap, & Sell More, but it doesnt mean you need to set
world records in order to be satisfed
Remember: Slow is better than never
10
Get Help, Not Hassle
I am not the only author who writes books and develops programs
for other authors (My business partner Joel Orr is not the only one
either, although we are darn good!) When you read one of the self-
help books or programs for authors, it is possible to get overwhelmed
with the advice We make it seem so easy, and when it does not
create immediate results, you may begin to feel stressed even a little
guilty Remember, even though we are making it easier for you, writ-
ing, publishing and selling books is still a lot of work I am going to
simplify it for you, but I cannot take away the responsibility of getting
started You have to do that So, even if it takes you longer than
you thought, and even if you do not sell millions of copies and get on
Oprah (every authors dream) you will still be far better off after read-
ing this book than you were before you read it!
How Fast is Fast?
The biggest obstacle you are going to have when you attempt to
write faster is, simply put, YOU We all have some feelings of inad-
equacy when it comes to writing It probably comes from the many
English teachers and professors you had in school They spend a lot
of time telling you specifcally how to write something, then cor-
recting you when you attempt it (They would probably criticize me
for using so many italics for emphasis!) The result is that very few
people think of themselves as great writers Then, there is the fear
of actually putting something into writing and asking people to buy it
from you This is a crushing fear for many authors As long as they
are writing, instead of publishing and selling, no one can criticize
them However, the moment they let go of the manuscript, and put
it on Amazon, they are seized with the fear that the English teachers
among us will rise up and make fun of them all over again Folks,
when I tell you I am going to teach you to Write Fast, I mean that I am
going to give you some great strategies that will get the content on to
the paper, and out of your mind I can show you how to do it better,
and more effciently However, if you are never going to get started,
or if you are too afraid of criticism to let the public see it, then you will
never fnish your book, no matter how quickly I teach you to write
Always remember: Slow is faster than never Use the techniques I
teach you, but just start writing How Fast is Fast? You should be
able to write a non-fction book in four months You should be able to
write your fction book in six to seven months When you get better
at it, you can shorten these times considerably But, suppose your fc-
tion book takes 12 months? No problem It doesnt matter What if
your non-fction book takes 12 months? No problem It doesnt mat-
11
ter However, if you are serious about writing, and especially if you
are serious about writing for money, you will need to pick up the pace
for your next book You can do it Writing is a learned skill You can
learn to read faster by taking a speed-reading course You can learn
to write faster by following my tips, and perhaps working with au-
thors like Joel Orr Finally, you can Write Fast by using the tools on
Fast Pencil I switched to Fast Pencil and it is terrifc It is a giant leap
technologically, because it is designed to specifcally help authors get
it done
How Cheap Is Cheap?
In this book, I am going to show you how to Write, Publish, and
Sell a book for less than $25 That is pretty darn cheap, isnt it? If
you use the tools on Fast Pencil, you really can do it I am dead seri-
ous about that! Now, I am also going to recommend that you utilize
their Wide Distribution package, which costs $199, and includes
your listings on Amazon, Kindle, iPad, etc That is still dirt cheap
Of course, you can spend more, and get more I use Jack Parry, of
Parry Design to do all my cover designs and interior graphics
Remember, I am writing for money, so I want my books to have a
professional look to them Jack charges about $495 for cover designs
and more to do interior layouts (Jack works directly on Fast Pencil if
you like, so it keeps the cost down) You can also spend money on
editors Editors really help you to get the work done In fact, they are
really a secret ingredient for authors who want to Write Fast Howev-
er, if you are interested in the most inexpensive way to get published,
get your frst book out for $25, and you will at least have it in print!
How Much is More?
Okay, here is the big question How many books will you sell?
Well, I can tell you this If you follow the advice in this book, you will
sell more than you would have sold Will you become an internation-
al best-selling author? That all depends on you, not me I am going
to give you the basic knowledge you need How well you apply it, and
how long you work at it are totally your responsibility Sometimes,
people ask me, What is the most important thing I can do to sell
more books? My answer to them is simple You need to do what-
ever it takes Folks, when I decided to make a living by writing,
publishing and selling books, I made a commitment to my family We
needed the money and I couldnt fnd another way to get it I was a
college professor, and we got paid a decent amount of money, but not
nearly enough to live the life we wanted I decided to make money
12
lots of money by writing It was one of the best things I ever did!
However, to really make money as an author, I had to make many
changes in my life I became disciplined I decided to learn how to
sell books by working with people who sold a ton of books year after
year I wasnt interested in working with authors who had one book
I wanted to create a continuing stream of income Did you know that
my frst fve books were commercial failures? It is true I did a lot of
work for small returns It wasnt until I made a true decision to write
for money that I started producing the kinds of books that sell I
can help you sell more books no question about it However, if you
are serious about selling thousands of books, you are going to need
to get more education and help In this book you will get enough to
get started By reading Write Fast, Publish Cheap, & Sell More, you
will get more products on to the market, at a lower cost, and in wider
distribution However, if you want to take that next step, get my
program A Best-Selling Authors SECRET SYSTEM for Marketing &
Selling Your Book How much is more? More is any quantity that
is greater than before! The average book sells less than 500 copies
That is the average Will you be satisfed if you only sell 500 books?
It wouldnt satisfy me By following the simple system in this book,
you will have the capability of beating the average In the Sell More
section, I am going to share the Big Selling Secret with you, and that
item alone will increase your sales dramatically However, if you
want to sell more, and keep selling more, you need to learn to write
a series of books, and to create other products to accompany those
books If you are serious about making money with your books, you
need more than just one book That is why this eBook, Write Fast,
Publish Cheap, & Sell More is so important for you
Are You Ready?
In the end, the question is not How Fast is Fast, How Cheap is
Cheap and How Much is More? The question is Are you ready?
You have the tool (this book), you have the system (Fast Pencil) and
you have the market (Thousands of books are sold each hour, of
every day) The real question, the only question left unanswered is
Are you ready? I guess we will all know the answer to that ques-
tion soon enough, wont we?

Write Fast

Let me say one thing to everyone who is reading this ebook Write
Fast (Yes, I know it should be Write Quickly, but if you are focus-
ing on the correct grammar, instead of the message, you are making a
big mistake that will cost you dearly)
Plan To Write Fast
Your goal should be to fnish your book as quickly as possible No
one ever became famous or wealthy while writing his or her book
They only became wealthy when they were selling their book! Plan to
fnish your book; do not plan to write your book
Let me give you an example I wrote this ebook in a weekend
If necessary, I could have fnished it in an afternoon I had a self-
imposed deadline, and it helped me get it done
I understand that writing fction books or short stories may require
more time But does it require a lifetime? If you were at a dinner, and
someone said to you, Tell us about the time you fell off the boat and
got your clothes all wet, you would not spend three hours preparing
your answer, then say, Excuse me, I have to do some research to de-
termine the length of the boat and the number of propeller blades on a
125-horsepower engine If you did say things like that, it would be
the last time anyone let you speak at dinner!
14
Folks, writing should not take so long Just do it I am about to
give you some great tips on Writing Fast, but they will be meaningless
unless you are planning to fnish your book quickly
Write Fast Tips
Here are 10 tips for writing fast:

1 Know your intended market niche, and write for them, not
yourself This will keep you on track I write for a special
market distributors in the Network Marketing Business This
is my market They buy my books If I try writing for other
markets, it takes me much longer, and I dont make money

2 Use an online writing tool like the book creator by Fast Pencil
Sign up for a FREE account by visiting
http://wwwfastpencilcom?ref=billquain-fp
Writing your book online with Fast Pencil allows you to invite
collaborators who can review your book while you write Do
best-selling authors use Fast Pencil? Well, I use it, and I am a
Best-Selling author, with 18 books, and over 2 million sold

3 Here is a BIG ONE! Separate structure and writing Create your
chapter outline frst by simply making a list of each chapter, and
giving each one a title Develop a simple outline below each
title Do this FIRST, and then start writing (If you do this
consistently, you will fnish your book FAST, because you are
simply flling in the outline This works for both fction and
non-fction)

4 Write in bursts This is another BIG ONE that many authors
miss You dont need to write the whole book in one sitting Do
you have ten minutes? Great! Sit down and write If you are
following an outline, it is easy

5 Write without hands I write everywhere For example, I was
once in the airport and came up with a concept for my book,
Overcoming Time Poverty I telephoned my wife and asked her
to write down some sentences, and email them to me That
night, in the hotel room, I was able to write a few paragraphs
that became an important part of the book (This book was an
overwhelming success a Best-Seller in the United States,
China, and Europe)
15
6 Write frst and research last Some authors tell me I need to do
a lot of research in order to write this book Folks, if you need
to do research just to get started, you are writing the wrong
book Instead of spending your time researching before you
write, keep writing and fll in the facts after you are fnished
This one-step will save you hours of time, because you can go to
the Internet and get exactly what you need, instead of getting
lost in countless documents and searches

7 Write a series of books Again, this is a BIG ONE! You dont
want to put everything you have into one book Save something
for the next one Your goal is to develop a community of
Readers, Buyers and Infuencers (see the Sell More section for
more on this concept) If your readers like your frst book, they
will want MORE Write Fast by keeping it shorter and writing
more books

8 Stop worrying People are always asking me, How did you
write so many books? The answer is simple I didnt worry
when I was writing I never worried about the quality of my
book I never worried about someone correcting my grammar or
judging my book In short, I didnt wait for perfection I just
wrote, published and sold

9 Write to sell, dont write to write If you are writing to sell, you
will stop writing and sell If you write to write, you may never
stop writing I dont write books because I like to write books
I write books because I like the money I get when I sell those
books

10 Writing the book is the beginning, not the end Set goals for
completing the writing, because after the book is written, you
are just getting started The more time you spend in the writing
process, the longer it will take you to reach your book goals I
write for money, and no one ever paid me money while I was
writing the book They only paid me when it was in print and
they could get their hands on it

Folks, stop worrying, stalling and making excuses No one cares
about you if you are still writing They only appreciate you if you are
an author You are not an author unless you have a book Get going
Create your chapter outline and start writing Most importantly, STOP
writing

Fast Fiction

I dont want fction writers to say, All he talked about was writing
non-fction I wanted something about writing fction faster Well,
my sponsor for this book is Fast Pencil, and they love Fiction Authors
Therefore, we need to give you some tips for Fast Fiction so Fiction
Authors will be happy as well! Actually, writing Fiction quickly is
not diffcult at all After all, if you are writing fction, you are telling
stories And, if youre a fction author, you have been probably tell-
ing stories your whole life Fast Fiction is just telling stories quickly
This doesnt mean you need to write a short, abbreviated book Just
because you write the book quickly does not mean that the book will
necessarily read quickly In fact, some of the fction I like the most is
very long! For example, I love James Michener, who writes histori-
cal fction I also read a lot of Tom Clancy and John Grisham All of
these authors write long books However, they learned to write them
quickly How Do I Know This? Okay, you might be saying, How
do you know that Tom Clancy and John Grisham write quickly? The
answer is simple They each turn out a lot of books! If they took
as long as some of the newbie fction writers, you would never have
heard of them
People like to read some fction writers because they know they
can get more For example, I stay tuned to John Grishams website to
help determine when the next book will be available I do the same
thing with Clancy If you write fction books, you need to write them
frequently so that your audience can follow you My two daughters
are HUGE JK Rowling fans She wrote the Harry Potter series (I love
18
them as well) We would go to all the Harry Potter release parties
at the bookstores whenever a new book was released I was a fnal-
ist in a Harry Potter costume contest during the release of the seventh
book when I dressed up as Cornelius Fudge! If JK Rowling was a slow
writer, she would still be a starving artist in England Instead, her
series of books was turned into movies, clothing, posters, and even an
entire section in Universal Studios Take my advice, writing fction fast
is the only way to go! Keep It Simple by Repeating the Theme One
of the secrets to Fast Fiction Writing is to stick to a theme Many of
John Grishams books are almost formulaic A young attorney gradu-
ates from law school, discovers the evils of the legal profession, goes
a bit rogue, and ends up leaving the law but being happy In fact,
it is surprising when Mr Grisham writes something different (One
of my favorite books is his Playing Football for Pizza, which is a
complete departure for him) If you hit upon a winning formula, stick
with it If you write adventure/romance, write books that the readers
of that genre know, love and buy! Westerns are westerns, but they
are relatively the same plot as a Harry Potter saga In fact, there are
really no new plots They have all been taken Yet, there are so many
variations on the theme that you can carve out a great fction niche for
yourself Once your readers expect a certain type of writing and story
line, stick with it and make it work for you by paying off in royalty
checks Peel the Onion I am about to share a Fast Fiction technique
that I KNOW works, because my daughter just used it to write her
fnal English assignment in her AP English class She is an excellent
writer, but she was having trouble fnishing this fnal assignment
The teacher told them to write something anything It could be long
or short, but it had to be good writing My daughter decided to write
a short story When I asked her what technique she would use, she
said she was going to Peel the Onion This is a term that she made
up, and I think it is fantastic for Fast Fiction Writing In a rare mo-
ment, she told me it would be okay to help her Now, my daughter
is 16, so it is indeed rare when she allows me to get involved in her
writing at all or her life in general for that matter She wanted to
create a scene, and start peeling back the layers to create an interac-
tive cast of characters, a plot, and a surprise ending (She was writing
a short story, so she only used one scene However, if you are writing
a novel, this also works well because you can storyboard a series
of scenes Before you know it, your book is complete) The scene
my daughter described was a dancer standing on a stage, holding one
dance shoe in her hand, and standing with her bare foot held behind
the leg that had the shoe on it The theater was semi-dark, obviously
after the show was over There were many people working in the the-
ater, some carrying electrical cords, others taking down scenery, and a
woman who was carrying a load of costumes to an exit At the back
19
door of the theater, a crowd of young people were smiling and talking
excitedly as they headed out of the theater In the middle of the group
was a young woman with the body and grace of a dancer This was
the scene, and as my daughter described it, I didnt know what the
actual story was I just knew it had happened and I had to peel the
onion to uncover all the layers and characters
The Story
I have to say that I do not know what the exact story she submitted
to her teacher was, because my daughter Kathleen would not let me
read it However, this is the early version she came up with before
she actually started to write:
The dancer on the stage had injured her foot before the perfor-
mance, and no matter how hard she tried, she could not get her shoe
on to perform The dancer had a bit of a wry smile on her face be-
cause several years before, the dancer had been an understudy when
the prima dancer, Donna Tonello, hurt her foot and could not get her
shoe on Our dancer is thinking about the cycle of dancing, because
the young woman at the center of the crowd at the back of the theater
was the understudy who danced so well tonight The understudy
would now take over the role of the prima dancer, just like she did
when Donna Tonello hurt herself As the scene begins to fade, the
woman with the large bundle of costumes says to the injured dancer,
Tomorrow I will need help laundering these costumes The dancer
replies, Okay Donna
Peel The Onion
Do you see what my daughter did? She peeled back the layers of
activities and characters from one scene She captured a pivotal point
in the story, and used it to work backwards to create the depth and
fnish of the entire tale Imagine using this technique with a dozen
mental pictures Each of them has many layers It wouldnt take
long to write a great book from those pictures, flling in characters,
actions, transitions, etc One of the reasons my daughter writes this
way is that we used to play a question/answer game where one per-
son describes a scene, and the other people ask questions that have a
yes or no answer
One of my favorites is the following scene: There is a man crying,
and a pile of sawdust on the foor Through yes/no questions, we
learn that the man is a blind dwarf who works in a circus Someone
20
is shaving wood off the bottom of his cane, and he is afraid he is
growing taller, which will end his life at the circus, and he has no-
where else to go As you can imagine, it takes quite a bit of time to
guess the answer to that riddle! However the process of asking ques-
tions to help put all the pieces together is an integral part to the Peel
the Onion style of Fast Fiction
No Matter How You Do It, Write Fast!
There are some other techniques for writing Fast Fiction, but I like
this one the best Just stick to what you know, use a formula for your
plots, create characters that you feel strongly about, and WRITE If
your readers like what you write, they will want more If you are too
slow, they will forget about you and move on to someone else Keep
them interested with short stories in between major novels Let them
contribute to your blog with story ideas Ask them to write the next
chapter in a characters life Ask them for new stories about old char-
acters In other words, if they came to you for an escape from reality,
make sure they do not escape back!
21
Fast Non-Fiction
There is no question in my mind that writing Fast non-Fiction is
faster than writing Fast Fiction even if you are writing a very com-
plicated book, with lots of facts and fgures If you do not have to
create characters and plots, writing is just plain faster Now, having
said that, let me give you some tips and tricks for Fast non-Fiction
that make it even faster Remember, no one ever bought a book that
was not written yet So, if you want to Write Fast, Publish Cheap and
Sell More, you need to fnish that book!
The 1 10 Technique
My friend Mike Litman is a genius when it comes to producing
books, audios and other products He uses the 1 10 technique
Basically, Mike tells authors to write the numbers 1, 2, 3, etc on the
left side of a piece of paper The last number should be 10 Accord-
ing to Mike, You know you will need some sort of introduction, so
write that term next to the number 1 In addition, you know you need
some kind of summary, so write that term next to the number 10
Now, you only need to come up with 8 topics to fnish your non-fction
book! Folks, that is beautiful! If you follow that system, you can
churn out a series of books on related topics very quickly You are, in
fact, producing Fast Non-Fiction
22
Structure versus Content
My friend Joel Orr (who is a very, very fast writer) suggests separat-
ing structure and content Joel suggests that you create the structure
of your book frst, and then start the writing It is a similar technique
to Mike Litmans approach According to Joel, authors get bogged
down trying to create the parts of their book, and this slows down the
writing process Joel is a practitioner of the things he suggests He
creates high-quality content very quickly His book How to Write a
Non-Fiction Book in 30 Days, at just one hour per day is a classic
Send an email to bill@mikelitmancom for information about getting
Joels book I highly recommend it, and I know it works because I
work with Joel and he can produce terrifc content in a short time
13 Great Techniques for Writing Fast Non-Fiction
As I told you, I am a non-fction writer I am a great storyteller, but
I dont make my living that way However, even non-fction writers
need to tell a story in their writing, because that is how people
remember things
To help you get it done fast, I am going to share 13 great tips
Why 13? Why Not!
1 Shorter is Faster - Keep It Short All of my books are about
125 pages long My readers expect my books to be a quick
read For Fast Writing, you need to produce Fast Reading books
In my latest book, Permission to Proft, I took out two chapters
that will become another book One of the chapters, What
Every Network Marketer Needs to Know about Marketing, is
the centerpiece for a new tool that will come out this year I
have not decided if it will be an eBook, audio, or some other
format However, there was no reason to include it in the
Permission to Proft book, because it was too much information,
and didnt add value to the book However, with a little work, I
will turn it into a product, and sell thousands of copies
2 Say it in a series - If you want to make more money, write a
series of books instead of cramming everything into one book
You will write faster, and you are likely to sell more books In
addition, your readers will love you for it
3 Listen, Make Notes, Write - I am always looking for new
material for my next book, or the book after that one! When I
hear a great phrase or idea, I write it down and use it in the
23

future One day, I was listening to a man talk about the hotel
business at a university He mentioned the term, Time
Poverty My friend, who was sitting next to me, watched me as
I wrote down that term She said, That is going to be a book,
isnt it? It was, and I sold well over 100,000 copies, and did
speaking trips to several countries, including China
4 Use Lots of Headings and Sub Headings - Not only will your
readers love you for it, it will help you write faster If you look
through this ebook, or any of my books, you will see lots of
headings In fact, some of my readers read the book by reading
the headings frst
5 Develop a Formula - If you read the section on Fast Fiction, you
read about the fact that there are only so many plots in the
world This is true for non-fction as well My books follow a
formula I identify a problem, give some background on it,
then solve the problems with stories, examples and a unique
perspective This makes my writing very fast, because I know
what I must accomplish in each book By the way, my readers
love it, because they know they will get great problem solving,
with lots of interesting stories
6 Be An Interpreter, Not A Researcher - Do you want to write
quickly, and make a lot of money? Be an interpreter, not a
researcher Researchers spend HOURS conducting experiments,
or culling through dusty manuscripts, looking for facts
Interpreters take the researchers work, and tell people what it
means If you read my books, you will not see a lot of facts
Facts dont sell Feelings sell I show people how to feel good
7 Stand On Your Own Two Feet - If there is one mistake that
newbie non-fction authors make, it is this: They are always
quoting someone else This is a waste of your time, and the
readers time People dont buy a lot of books because you can
tell them what someone else said about something They are
buying books because they want you to tell them how YOU feel,
and how THEY SHOULD feel Wow, read that one again!
8 Pay A Cleanup Crew - Dont get bogged down in copy editing
I NEVER correct my own typing I pay someone else to do it I
just fnished writing another book It is called Happy Leap Year
I wrote it in about three weeks, and it is GOOD! How did I
write it so quickly? I didnt worry about the typing I had some
24
one who corrected my typos EVERY NIGHT after I fnished
writing The cleaned up manuscript was ready for me the next
day (Not that it mattered, because I just kept on going, and
didnt look back!)
9 Have a Graphics Guy Standing By - This is similar to the
cleanup crew I like to put pictures and graphics into some of
my books But, I dont want to waste time trying to designing
them, so I use a Graphics Guy As I write, I put a series of plus
signs in the text where I need a picture or chart After the plus
signs, I write a note to my Graphics Guy, telling him what I want
At the end of the note, I put another series of plus signs My
guy goes through the manuscript, reads what I have written
before and after the plus signs, then creates a great graph or
picture for me Does he always capture it perfectly? Sometimes
he does, sometimes he does not But, a quick phone call is often
all it takes to straighten it out It saves so much time!
10 Dont Delete Your Writing - When I am working with an
author, here is what often happens I speak to them and they
say, I wrote a bunch of stuff last night, but I didnt like it, so I
deleted it NEVER do that! Maybe it wasnt right for this book,
or maybe it wasnt right for this PART of the book, but you
should always save your writing You may be able to Plug it
in someplace else later - in this book or another
11 Write Like You Talk - Let me ask you a question Which is
going to be faster, writing like you talk, or making up some
other way of communicating, and trying to put that style on to
paper? You know the answer It is amazing to me how many
people think they have to use a whole different style of
communicating when they write a book Forget it! Be yourself
If your readers dont like the way you speak, they wont like the
way you write either
12 Speak, Record, Transcribe - Would you like to be really,
REALLY Fast? Try this Get an account on Audio Acrobat for
$20/month, and then just record your thoughts over the phone!
Then, pay someone to transcribe them There you have it - a
book Get your Audio Acrobat FREE trial at
http://wwwbillquainaudioacrobatcom

For an even faster Talk, Record, Transcribe system, interview
some other people This is what Mike Litman did for his ultra-
25
mega best-seller Conversations With Millionaires Mike didnt
know much at the time, but he knew that readers would like to
learn from millionaires So, he developed a radio show, and
started interviewing them He had the good sense to record the
shows, and eventually, he had someone transcribe the tapes and
made them into a book It is still selling!
13 Dont Write the Next Chapter, Write The Chapter You Are
Feeling - No one said that a book needs to be written in a
certain order I use Mike Litmans system to get my chapters
set up (By The Way, Fast Pencil is fantastic for organizing
chapters They make it easy to jump in to the spot where you
are motivated to write right now) When I write a book, I jump
around Remember, I already decided on the basic outline of the
book I try to write the chapter headings frst, then start the
book This makes it easy to write, because I am not trapped by
a sequence In the end, it makes for a better book
Write It Fast
I wrote this chapter in about 90 minutes, including editing it Well,
to be fair, I didnt edit it I paid someone to correct it, but that didnt
take up any of my time! I also wrote this chapter AFTER writing the
rest of the ebook Why? Well, I just didnt get around to it at frst
Then, I got interested in other things But, I kept taking notes as I
was writing the rest of the book, so I was really excited about put-
ting some of the ideas on to paper (really, it was the computer on Fast
Pencils site)
Learn to write fast, then learn to sell fast too This is a great combi-
nation for authors who want to make money
26
27
Publish Cheap

Let me tell you something right up front here You are not going
to get published by a major publisher, sell hundreds of thousands of
books, and get on the Oprah show
There, we got that out of the way, didnt we? Folks, it just isnt
going to happen The publishing industry is in crisis So, unless you
are a famous celebrity, forget about going with a national publisher
Now, you may be saying, This is terrible news I will never
make any money if I dont get an agent, get a publisher, and sell
books in all the bookstores I am not surprised that you are saying
this Every author I talk to has that thought They are just so certain
that their ticket to greatness is through the big-name publishers
I sold over 2 million books, in 20 languages, traveled around the
world as a speaker, and never even sold a book through the book-
store I never had an agent, and the major publishers have no idea
who I am

How did I do it? I self-published my books for many years, and just
recently made the switch to an on-demand publisher I made a lot
of money, and had a great time I met many, many people through my
books In fact, I have been a sighting for my readers, as in, I saw
Bill Quain the guy who wrote the book ______ I have fans around
the world And, it isnt just my face that people recognize, it is my
voice (I have done a lot of audio products) One evening, while on
a cruise ship, I was talking to my daughter on the main concourse A
man was walking by, and he suddenly turned and said, Are you Dr
28
Bill Quain? He recognized my voice from one of my recordings
How did my voice, face and words become so well known, without
a publisher or an agent? Folks, I just started writing fast, publishing
books myself, and selling them like crazy If I waited for an agent,
then a publisher, I would still be waiting In fact, I would probably
have quit the business I would have missed so much My family
would have missed so much And guess what my readers would
have missed so much
The bottom line is this If you want to Publish Cheap, you need to
think in terms of both time and money Your time is valuable, and
wasting years (seriously) of your life waiting for someone to come
along and publish your book is a terrible cost

Recently, I read a newspaper column in a local paper from the
Philadelphia area The author of the column had written a book TWO
YEARS AGO He was still looking for an agent Here is a guy who
already has an audience He has readers Yet, he is wasting his time
and therefore his money looking for an agent He said he didnt
want to self-publish, because it would be too costly to print all those
books and put them in bookstores Well, at least he got one thing
right! It would cost too much to self-publish and print books for all
those bookstores

Here is the crazy part He can self-publish, or better yet he can use
on-demand publishing, and have his book available all over the
world!
Plan To Publish

So many authors write a book, then plan on looking for a publisher
I do it differently Instead of planning on looking, I plan to publish
My goal isnt to fnd a publisher My goal is to publish my book and
sell it
What kind of plan do you want to have?

Folks, listen to what I am telling you Do NOT waste time and
money writing for years so that someone can say, no thanks Stop
worrying about getting permission to publish from someone who has
never heard of you, your book, or maybe even your subject matter
29
Three Kinds of Publishers
Okay, lets get down to facts There are three kinds of publishers
in the world They are: Traditional, Self-Publishing, and On-Demand
Publishing companies Everyone knows about traditional publishers
They usually work through agents They pay you a royalty on all the
books they sell, and they take forever to get your book into print, and
even longer to pay you

What most authors DO NOT know about traditional publishers is
that they do almost nothing to promote your book They will spend
almost $0 on your behalf They simply put your book into circulation,
and hope it sells

Self-Publishers own their companies I was a Self-Publisher for
years, starting in the late 1980s There are three main advantages to
Self-Publishing speed, control and payouts If I write a book, it gets
published immediately I have cover designers, text layout people,
printers and other professionals who work with me It took me years
to build up my relationships, but they are solid I get to keep 100% of
the revenues I decide what to publish, when to do it, and how much
to charge

The disadvantages of self-Publishing are mainly things like THE
WORK and the WORRY! Last year, I did a print run of 24,000 for one
of my books I had to negotiate the printing, and then pay for it My
customers did not pay me for their books for 30 60 days I had to
arrange storage and shipping as well And, that was one print run,
for just one of my books All that work takes me away from the cre-
ative aspects of Writing and Marketing my books
On the other hand, I did get to keep all the money Of course,
the biggest PLUS about Self-Publishing is that my books were on the
market No one had the power to say no thanks besides my read-
ers Luckily, THOUSANDS of them said, yes please to my books
last year
On-Demand Publishing

In recent years, a new breed of publishers emerged They
combine the best advantages of both the traditional Publishers and
the Self-Publishers We call them On-Demand Publishing Like Self-
Publishers, they do not waste your time They do not need agents
They are quick You have control You retain the copyrights

30
However, like traditional publishers, they do all the work They
negotiate contracts, provide editors, printers, fulfllment, collection,
- everything you need This frees you up to Write and to Sell

You make less money than you would if you Self-Published, but
more than if you used a Traditional Publisher It is a win-win situa-
tion You can make more money by writing more books, or by spend-
ing your time selling instead of fnding printers and setting up your
website
IMPORTANT How Good Are On-Demand Publishers?
This year, for my eighteenth book, I switched from being a Self-
Publisher to using an On-Demand Publishing Company I published
my book with Fast Pencil, and I am glad I did
How It Worked for Me
I used Fast Pencils online book creator to write my book, and to
have my editors fnish it for me That was FREE

I then clicked a few buttons, and the book was automatically for-
matted How easy is that?

I chose the Wide Distribution Package, and in a few days, my book
was listed on Amazon, Kindle, the ibook store, and many more places

I put a link on my website to Fast Pencils Marketplace, and IMME-
DIATELY had an ecommerce solution When someone visits my site
and wants to order my book, they simply click on the link, and Fast
Pencil takes care of the rest FP collects the money, prints the book,
and ships it No muss, no fuss! (They do the same thing for all of the
outlets, including Amazon)

As a Self-Publisher, I used to dread the work of uploading a pdf fle
to Kindle, etc However, with the Wide Distribution choice, all that
work is done for me In addition, Fast Pencil guarantees that they will
maintain all my electronic versions for me For example, when the
iPad was recently developed, Fast Pencil shortly had a contract with
them I didnt need to get an iPad app to load up my book FP did
it for me

Amazon is a great place to sell your book, but it can be costly for
a self-publisher As I mentioned earlier, I sell most of my books
31
through brokers However, I put all of my titles on Amazon just
for the credibility When Amazon sold a book, they took it out of the
small inventory they keep for me Then, I had to mail them another
book to replace the copy they just sold Amazon has all sorts of rules
You cannot use shipping noodles for example only newspaper It is
a pain to continuously ship one book at a time to them In fact, by the
time Amazon takes out their cut of the selling price, and I pay for the
shipping, and put in the time to pick the book off the shelf, address
the label, wrap it and ship it, I actually LOST money on some orders!

Now, you may not mind it I hated it So, by using an On-Demand
Publisher, I save a lot of aggravation
Publish Cheap with Fast Pencil

In the title of this ebook, I hinted that I would show you how to
publish Cheap
Let me tell you how CHEAP IT IS!
1 Write your book online for free, using Fast Pencils book creator

2 Format your book automatically, at NO COST

3 Create a cover (front, back and spine) for FREE with the
Publishing Tool

4 Print a pdf proof copy to see EXACTLY what your book will
look like Make any last-minute formatting changes, such as
hunting for widows and orphans Create another pdf to make
sure it looks great This is also FREE

5 Print a copy of the book, and have it shipped directly to your
home Is there any better feeling than the frst time you see
your book in print? This will cost you about $9 for the book,
and the cost of shipping Treat yourself and have it express
shipped to get it sooner Add another $16

6 Your total cost from start to fnish? $25

7 Put the book into wide distribution, on Amazon, Kindle, ibook,
Barnes & Nobles, etc Get an ISBN from Fast Pencil Total Cost
for all this? $199
32
Now, treat yourself even more and have 20 copies printed and
shipped to you Use them as business cards, gifts for family mem-
bers, ANYTHING You are a published author You are part of a
unique club Not many people have ever done what you do

Finally, start MAKING MONEY by selling your books You will learn
more about this in the next section of this book
But, Is This A REAL Book?

Some of you will never get past the idea that a book isnt really a
book unless it is published by a traditional publishing company That
is too bad, but I really cant help you You have just placed your hap-
piness into someone elses hands And guess what the traditional
publishers could care less!

Let me ask you a question: If your book is for sale on the largest
bookstore in the world (Amazon) and if it is available on the cool-
est technology (Kindle and iPad) then how can you say it isnt really
a book? Oh sure, some of your friends and family members will tell
you it isnt really a book That always happens But, how many of
them ever did what you did? How many of them have published a
book?

Folks, if your book is selling and making you money, then it is
a book! If it is read by people who like it, then it is a book If you
wrote it, and if you published it, then it is a book

To quote Forrest Gump, Thats all I have to say about that
A Final Word on Publishing Your Book

Realistically, you have two choices Self-Publish, or use an On-
Demand Publishing Service If you do not, you will be one of those
people who tells other people at a New Years Eve party, I wrote a
book and Im waiting for word from the publisher At the next years
party, you will be saying the same thing

However, with all the great people and companies who can help you,
and with the liberating independence of the Internet, you can success-
fully publish your books quickly and easily Get over your feelings of
inadequacy, and start celebrating the new reality of the modern book
markets
33
Sell More!

It always amazes me how perfectly rational adults can go through
the disciplined steps of writing a book, and the equally systematic
approaches needed to publish a book, and then go completely crazy
trying out the latest tricks of the trade to try to sell their books It
wastes both time and money I know that many authors dont mind
wasting their time so much, but spending thousands of dollars on
marketing scheme after marketing scheme is really frustrating for
them For me, I HATE wasting either time or money

When I started writing for money, I was a college professor My
dream was to one day become a full-time author Maybe you dont
want to do that However, it is terrible to waste your time and money
even if you have plenty of each!
You Need a Plan

Okay, by this time, you are not surprised to see the You Need a
Plan section under the Sell More! section After all, I told you in
the beginning of this ebook that I was going to tell you about the im-
portance of planning And there is a, You Need a Plan section under
both the Write Fast and Publish Cheap sections However, the, You
Need a Plan lessons are most important for Selling More When it
comes time to sell your book, the success of the entire enterprise de-
pends on the actions you take here
34
You need a plan because without it, you will be chasing phantoms
for years to come For example, you may read an article on the In-
ternet about getting on radio shows So, you start sending out media
inquiries, getting booked, and telling your story on the radio and it
leads nowhere

You might hear about another persons book that sold well at local
festivals You start renting table space and talking to people who walk
past Nothing happens

Then, you see an author signing books at a bookstore You make
the arrangements and sit there all night Maybe you sell a couple of
books, but nothing much happens

Finally, you see an advertisement from a PR specialist, and you pay
them several thousand dollars to promote your book Again, nothing
much happens

Does this sound depressing? It should However, it is fairly typi-
cal for authors You see folks, without a plan, you will run around
wasting time and money your time and money However, WITH a
plan, you can focus in on the things that work How will you know
if they work? If you create a plan correctly, you will set specifc goals
for your marketing and sales activities, and MEASURE your success
or failure for each one
The BIG SELLING SECRET
I wrote a great program for authors called A Best-Selling Authors
SECRET SYSTEM for Marketing & Selling Your Books (This is a
combination program, with a step-by-step workbook, several hours
of audios, and interviews with some successful authors - all of them
people just like you - who are making nice money with their books I
have sold this program for up to $495, but you can buy it at a spe-
cial price because you ordered the Write Fast, Publish Cheap, and Sell
More! program)

One of the most important parts of my SECRET SYSTEM is the Big
Selling Secret I am not going to make you purchase the entire
SECRET SYSTEM in order to get The Big Selling Secret I promised I
would give it to you in this ebook, and that is exactly what I am going
to do But, thats not all! In this ebook, I am also going to give you
the fve steps in the SECRET SYSTEM, and explain a little about each
step You are going to get a LOT of instruction in this ebook Know-
35
ing the fve steps, and the BIG SELLING SECRET will change your
book-selling life

The BIG SELLING SECRET In order to sell something, you must
know who is buying it

Isnt that simple? It is almost stupid, isnt it? Yet, almost NO AU-
THOR knows this BIG SELLING SECRET Instead, they run around
trying to sell their book to people who are not likely to buy their book
It wastes time and money Even worse, it destroys many an authors
book dreams
An Example

Have you ever seen an author sitting at a table in a bookstore, with
a big pile of his/her books on the table? The author is doing a book
signing Lets say the book is a mystery story perhaps a detective
story set in a big city What is the likelihood that someone is walk-
ing into that bookstore and saying to him/herself, I am really in
the mood for a big city detective mystery? Even better, let me spend
my money on an author I never heard of and hope they have a good
book The best thing would be to fnd a new author who only wrote
one book That way, if I like the book, I will never be able to get a
second one because the author will probably lose so much money with
the frst one that he/she will quit the business

Does this sound like something that a good buyer would be think-
ing? Of course not Yet, there the authors are, in almost every book-
store, sitting there trying to sell books The truth is, however, that
their ideal customer is probably not going to walk through that door

If these authors had a plan, they would realize that their customers
are not walking into bookstores Their customers are in a lot of other
places, however
A Second Example

An author fnishes her book and decides she needs a website She
wants a website that is as elegant as her Victorian Romance Novel
Her web guy (they are almost always a guy) designs a great site,
with great photographs, a calendar, excerpts from the book, etc The
author spends $1,500 for the design, and $30/month She gets a
few visitors to the site, but only a few people buy the book Actually,
36
she is not even sure if the people who buy the book learned about it
through her website
One More Example

A motivational speaker writes a book and plans to sell it after his
events He writes a beautiful book, and stands at the back of the
room after each talk He makes some sales, but it really isnt worth
the effort It costs him a lot of money to ship books to each presenta-
tion, and afterwards, he has to ship the remainders back again Many
of his customers would buy his book if he took credit cards, but he
has no way of doing that He checked into it, but it costs quite a bit
to take credit cards His book sells for $25, and his customers dont
seem to want to spend that much
A Final Case Study
A man who has overcome a lot of challenges in his life, and become
successful, wants to write a book that will help others do the same
thing When I interviewed him, he said his goal was, that people
would read my book and it would change their lives - and oh yes, I
want to make a lot of money So, he writes a great book, but people
are not making great changes in their lives, and they arent spending
enough money to make great changes in his life either
What Is The Problem?
Each of the authors in the examples above had a book dream They
wanted to write their book, sell thousands of copies, and make a lot of
money on it But, they didnt have a plan They didnt consider the
needs of the customers, and therefore, were not prepared to build a
community of fans for their book In addition, none of them had fol-
low-up products that add value and retain customers Finally, none
of them knew one of the most fundamental secrets of marketing If
you want to sell something, you need to know who is buying it Like
most authors, they simply write a book and hope for the best

After reading this ebook, however, you will not do that You are
going to discover fve simple steps that will literally change your book
life You are going to create a plan frst, THEN take action And, the
actions you take will be carefully measured so you never make the
same mistakes twice, and so you can create ongoing selling relation-
ships with your customers
37
Creating a Selling Relationship

Did you read that? I said, Create a selling relationship with your
customers You are not creating friendship relationships You are
not creating charity relationships If you are serious about the Sell
More aspect of your book business, you want to create selling rela-
tionships with people This means you are going to take their money
away from them

Are you ready for that? Are you ready to take peoples money away
from them? If you are not, then put down this ebook and think about
the nice charity you are running, because you are not ready to run a
book business

Folks, I was serious when I told you, If you want to sell some-
thing, you must know who is buying it I want you to want your
customers money! You want them to buy Then, you want them to
buy more

Of course, you are going to give them something of value, but none-
theless, you are selling and that means taking their money away from
them and putting it into your bank account

I know this sounds a little rough, but believe me, if you are not will-
ing to think this way, you will be best described in two words broke
author Do you want to be a broke author, or do you want to be a
wealthy, successful author? If you want to be wealthy and successful,
you need to read this next section
The FIVE STEPS in the SECRET SYSTEM

I call it my SECRET SYSTEM because no one else seems to know
about it I havent kept it a secret In fact, I tell everyone about it
For one thing, I am selling my book, A Best-Selling Authors SECRET
SYSTEM for Marketing & Selling Your Book, so I tell everyone about
it (You see, I am not afraid to take your money) In fact, I want
your money very much You are one of my potential customers I am
going to give you something of tremendous value for your money,
but nonetheless, I want your money I know that after you read my
SECRET SYSTEM you can make that money back 100 times over, so I
sleep well at night)
38
Here are the Five Steps:
1 Break the market into smaller groups (Segment) Your book
is not right for everyone, so it is time to start looking for groups
of people who might buy your book This means that you need
to segment the market into smaller groups If you sell Romance
novels, the frst type of segmentation to do is to decide if men
or women will buy your book (I hope you get that one right!)
Then look for age groups, income levels, family status, etc If
you sell non-fction books, you need to fnd people who will
buy those books Your non-fction book should solve an
immediate problem Who are the people who have that
problem? Do they KNOW they have that problem? Would they
be willing to spend some money to SOLVE that problem?

2 Choose the most likely segments to buy your books (Target)
- You want to give a priority to those groups that are the easiest
to reach, have the largest potential, and are most likely to buy
more These become your primary targets

3 Determine how and where these people buy books
(Intercept) - Every buyer goes through a process when buying
You need to understand the basic process (It has fve parts
Problem Recognition, Information Search, Alternative
Evaluation, Purchase Decision, and Post-Purchase Evaluation)
You must study your market targets to know more and more
about them What problem do you solve for them? Where do
they look for information? Can you give them a sample that
leads to a purchase? How do you make a second sale after the
frst purchase?

4 Create a Marketing Mix with the four variables that
marketers can use to sell books (Position) You want your
best buyers to think you created this book especially for them
This means you need to brand and position your book so they
want it and will buy it

5 Create action plans that sell (Execute) At this point, you are
ready to actually create a to-do list and turn it into a to-sell
list You will save so much time and money if you just follow
the system here You will write plans that have a name, number,
an objective, step-by-step actions, and a method of evaluation
Folks, when you decide in advance how you are going to mea-
sure the success or failure of a plan, you will change your life
forever

Does This System Work?

Now, you may be thinking to yourself This seems like a lot of
work I need to understand my markets before I try to sell them
something, then I need to learn even more about them as I position
and brand my book Then, I must write up all these plans, and even
decide in advance how to evaluate them? I dont have time for that I
want to sell books

Does that sum up your feelings right now? If it does, then you are
like most authors You want to Sell More, but you are not willing to
work for it Folks, there are thousands of books out there How do
you get people to buy your book instead of another authors book?
The answer is simple You need to compete And, if you are going
to compete with other authors, and if those other authors have good
books as well, then you need to get serious about selling books

Let me tell you this I use this system for all of my books, and I
have sold over 2 million copies I know my markets very, very well
I know that they buy books and I know what kind of books they will
buy When I release a new book, I already know how many copies
it will sell, because I know the size of my market Everything I do
is time-tested If it didnt work when I tried it before, I know why
Sometimes, I make adjustments and try it again Sometimes, I say,
Thank goodness I learned that that strategy didnt work so that I will
never waste my time and money on it again
My Markets

I write almost exclusively for the Network Marketing Industry
They are my readers I dont sell books through bookstores I use the
Internet for some sales, but most of my sales come from brokers and
distributors I create books that the end user (Independent Network
Marketers) will use, but I sell my books to brokers and distributors
They resell the books to the ultimate customers However, I still
market to the ultimate consumer to create demand for my books In
other words, I want the end users to ask the brokers to get my books
for them

Of course, I also sell on the Internet at sites like Amazon and the
Apple bookstore I use different marketing techniques for these sales,
because these are different customers

My latest book, Permission to Proft, is a good example of this two-
strategy marketing system To get individual sales on Amazon and
40
Kindle, I blog, write articles, seek publicity, give talks, etc To sell to
my big customers my brokers and distributors I do personal phone
calls, mailings, free samples, etc

I have used this system to sell books in my primary market for 15
years, and I plan to continue It took a lot of time and patience to cre-
ate my community of readers However, it was worth it Besides the
2 million+ books, I sold audios, videos and other products

Of course, just because I sold 2 million books does not mean that I
have 2 million customers I have fans who buy all of my books Be-
cause of my relationship with my fans, I know that my books will sell
They want the next book and look forward to it
I Want You to Have What I Have

I want you to believe one thing: I want you to enjoy the full ben-
efts of being an author I want you to have what I have

Is it likely that you will sell 2 million books? Probably not But,
how many would you like to sell? What would make you happy as an
author? Would you like to have fans avid readers who want to read
your next book?

You can have those things if you use your head, and not just your
heart Writing, Publishing and Selling books requires a systematic
approach You must want success, then pursue it with vigor and
enthusiasm

Selling Tips for Newbie Authors
In the previous chapter, I showed you how to create a winning mar-
keting and sales strategy for your book If you take the time to learn
how to market, you will sell more books It is that simple
However, I know what you want You want me to give you some
specifc tactics to get you started Okay, I will do it, but I want you to
understand that I am doing it under protest! Use the following tips
ONLY if they ft into your marketing and selling strategy
Newbies Should Build A List
Here is the sad truth Most people only buy one copy of your book
This is especially true for Fiction books So, selling books one at a
time is a tough way to make money! After all, if you make $5/book,
and your goal is to make $10,000/year selling books, you need to sell
2,000 books per year just to meet your goals
If you build a list, however, you get two advantages First, the
members of your list may sell books for you This means that you
are no longer selling books one at a time If you sell your book to one
reader, and she tells two friends, and they each tell one more person,
you have driven your book sales geometrically, rather than linearly
This gives you leverage and makes it easier to reach your goals
The second advantage to building a good list of readers is that you
can sell them more products If you write a series of books (I highly
44
recommend it) and if you keep careful records of the people who buy
your book (or even have some interest in it) you have a ready-made
promotional list of potential buyers When you come out with an
audio or DVD, you can market it to this list
Hot Tips For Newbies
Here are 25 ideas you can use immediately:
ATTENTION: These tips work for both Fiction and non-Fiction
books
1 Website You defnitely need a website, but dont spend a lot of
money on it It is easy to get ripped off Your website is not
going to sell many books Consider this - websites dont sell;
they make it possible for you to sell You need it, but it is not
a major sales tool I use one-page websites for some of my
books They are simple, cheap, and easy to create I dont
spend a lot of time on them, because they do not produce much
for me They will not produce much for you either, so relax and
move on to the good stuff
2 Get a shopping cart - You must have some way to collect
money when your customers want to buy your books Of
course, if you are listed on Amazon, Kindle and other stores,
they will collect money for you However, you also want to sell
multiple products, or products other than books When you list
your book on Fast Pencil, they provide you with a direct Buy
Now link This is an excellent tool because it sells books
through the Fast Pencil Marketplace, where your royalties are
much larger
3 Use the Funnel Method to sell books (and other
products) You know what a Funnel looks like It is wider at
the top, and more narrow at the bottom To sell books, create
attractors that build your list and get people into your funnel
Once they are there, GROW THEM with strong contacts and
relentless communication Many of the tips I mention below,
such as blogs, newsletters, and book trailers are actually
Attractors Look on the last page of this ebook to see a picture
of the Marketing Funnel

4 Blogs Non-Fiction writers MUST have a blog Fiction writers
SHOULD have a blog You want people to interact with you In
45
fact, with Fast Pencil, you can actually write your book by
writing a blog and then converting it (See the movie Julie and
Julia for a great example of the effectiveness of a blog
5 OPB Other Peoples Blogs This is so important Every blog
author wants one thing traffc So, look around for people
who are writing blogs similar to yours, or in a compatible area
Start participating, and link your comments back to your blog
It is all about community
6 Facebook, Twitter, etc No excuses, both Fiction and Non-
Fiction Authors need a Facebook and Twitter account, and you
need to use them Create Fan Pages and build lists
7 Amazon, Kindle, iPad, etc The more places your book is
available, the more likely it is to sell However, these sites are
just like your website They dont sell books, they only list
them You still need to do the selling and marketing

8 Selling Site Strategies Every Selling Site, including Amazon,
Barnes & Noble, Kindle, iPad and others, has selling tools
These include Author Profles, Reviews, Ratings, Previews, and
recommended buy programs Put in the time on all these
sites Do a great profle Ask friends and family members to
make a purchase and do a review Get the action started Learn
the rules, and learn the tools Put in time each day until your
fan base builds
9 Video Book Trailers Did you know you can create fantastic
Video Book Trailers for $30/year? Thats right, $30/year For
that small amount of money, you can create an unlimited
number of them This system even gives you an email
campaign capability For a sample of a Video Book Trailer I
made for my book, go to http://wwwaudioacrobatcomnot
CRWq88Ts/ To register for a FREE account, or to create an All
Access account for just $30/year, visit

10 Create Multi-Media Tools Today, readers want to see behind
the scenes Give them the access they want by creating audios
and videos that help them get to know you better Record a
reading from your book Show short video clips of a book
46
signing

11 Specialty Stores These are stores that sell books, but are not
bookstores For example, if you write books that feature
animals, why not sell your fction book in a pet supply store?
If you write Romances, what about a vintage clothing store, or
a candy shop? Of course, Non-Fiction authors can use this
strategy as well Sell your How-To books at the grocery store,
hardware stores, etcThe trick is to offer the retailer a good
reason to carry your books If it increases sales, they should
love it If you have a series of books, that is even better It
keeps customers coming back to the store, which is EXACTLY
what the retailer wants
12 Build a list Use every possible strategy to build a list of
readers and potential readers Learn to build and use Squeeze
Pages Mike Litman is an absolute genius when it comes to
creating squeeze pages that work, because he can show you
how to focus on the PROBLEMS and PAINS that drive your
readers wild Mike is especially good at working with non-
fction authors who want to build a big business Contact him at
mike@mikelitmancom
13 Ask for help by giving friends and family specifc
instructions This brilliant tip came from Steve Harris, who is
a marketing genius He gave me the link to author Jeffrey
Hayzletts website Jeffrey is the author of The Mirror Test
While this book is a non-fction work, the technique will work
just as well for Fiction This strategy helped him reach Best-
Seller status on several lists
14 Conduct contests Be creative and build your list When my
friend wanted advice for promoting his book about his boyhood
in Ireland, I urged him to create an Irish Story Contest and
promote it at Irish concerts, Festivals, Meetings, etc It was a
great idea for building a list and getting publicity

15 Relentlessly pursue media opportunities Start local and
work outwards However, always have a Squeeze Strategy
for media In other words, have a place where people can go to
get something free, and capture their names and emails when
they get there Dont waste your time on the media (and waste
their time too) by making comments or being a guest if there is
no way for people to learn more, take action, or get a free gift
47
16 Write articles There are many online article sites that are
excellent for all sorts of authors to get links back to their web
sites, and to build interest in their books This works well for
Fiction authors as well as for non-fction authors For example,
if you wrote a book about paranormal romances (a great genre,
with many fans) start writing about past life experiences on the
web Dont make it a sales pitch for your book Make it an
interesting article I write articles to promote my non-fction
book line It works
17 Create You Tube Videos Do a short lecture about your books
general topic Hire some actors and create a one-act play from
your book
18 Look for Sponsors - It is probably easier for a Non-Fiction
author to fnd sponsors, but Fiction writers should not give
up on the idea Sponsors want to put their names on anything
that makes them look good in the minds of their customers
Sponsors buy books - lots of books One of the authors I
worked with wrote a childrens book and sold 5,000 copies
through a sponsor Travel agencies might sponsor a novel set
on a cruise ship Banks will sponsor non-fction books about
money, etc
19 Branch Out - Look for promotional opportunities that arise
from your book My sister wrote a book called Tonight You
Are My Baby It is a Christmas book that tells the story of the
birth of Christ from Marys perspective She developed her
speaking business by addressing womens groups about being
a mother Dont be held hostage by your topic Branch out to
new markets
20 Develop Products That Sell - One client of mine wrote a book
called Following the Drum It is the story of women at the
Valley Forge encampment Like my sister, she also started
speaking to womens groups She sold copies of her book at
the back of the room after her talks, but it is a sizable book,
and some people did not want to buy it She needed a product
that was more accessible She recently developed an audio CD
called What Martha Told George - Advice from Americas frst,
First Family What can you create that more people will buy?
21 Book Signings - These can be great, but only if you are the one
the buyers are coming to see Dont get involved in random
48
book signings where you sit at a table and hope someone
comes into the store who might buy your book Create an
attraction that draws your readers into the store Do the
promotion work yourself
22 Work with book groups - There are literally hundreds of book
groups in every major city Why not offer to speak to the group
about your book, or lead them in some sort of activity Does
your book have a food theme? Create some recipes that book
group members can make for their meetings
23 Talk about writing a book - Why not use your book as an
example of how to write a book? My sister did that for her
Christmas book, and sold 1,200 copies at schools in her
neighborhood Remember, you are a published author You did
something that most people would like to do, but havent
24 Remember the Gift Market - This is the most overlooked
market segment by most authors, yet it is one of the most
lucrative Everyone is looking for gift ideas And, gift buyers
often make multiple purchases Create gift ideas around your
book Does it ft into a Holiday Category? Think of occasions
like Valentines Day, Anniversaries, etc
25 Sell OPP (Other Peoples Products) to your list - One of the
advantages of having a big list is that you can sell them OPP
For example, if your built your list around your How-To book,
why not promote another helpful book on a similar subject?
Of course, you will get a commission from the other author
(This is sometimes known as an Affliate Program) The same
opportunity exists for your Fiction books Your list is a gold
mine, but only if you mine it! And, remember, if you promote
an authors book to your list, he/she will do the same thing on
his/her list
PLEASE NOTE: In many of the tips above, I tried to stress the
importance of building a list so that you can sell books The secret is
to build an interested community of readers, buyers and infuencers
These are the people who are going to give you their money If people
opt out of your list, that is no problem You want to have a thriving
list In todays marketplace, there is so much emphasis on building
community that you need to work hard to keep their interest If they
49
lose interest, they werent going to buy anyway
Summary
Newbies, start selling It is part of the creative process Remember,
you are not going to sell books in the bookstore It doesnt work that
way for authors like us We need to sell outside the bookstore to
succeed
For some of you, this is very bad news You dreamed of writing a
book and getting it into bookstores where everyone would love it and
buy it That doesnt happen either Newbie author books do not sell
in the bookstore You have to use the Internet, and your personal
initiative, to sell books
However, here is the good news Your readers are using the same
channels They arent looking in bookstores to buy books They
want to build relationships with their authors They want to be part
of your community
Are all readers looking for this? No, but the ones who buy lots of
books are!
Go get em!
