In Memoriam
T
his of Finsiders Playbook is dedicated to the memory of former Dolphins tackle Anthony Cesario, guard Harry Galbreath, safety Barry Hill, tackle Eric Laakso, defensive tackle Shawn Lee and tight end/broadcaster Jim Mandich, each of whom passed away in the past year. On April 26, 2011, the Miami Dolphin organization mourned the passing of Mandich, a member of the Dolphins family both on and off the field for more than 40 years who left an imprint that was both unique and authentic. He was a popular tight end best known as Mad Dog for his tenacious and relentless attitude on the great Dolphins Super Bowl teams in the 1970s, playing for the club from 1970 through 1977. He was a member of two Super Bowl winning squads (1972, 1973), including the Perfect Season team, and three AFC Championship teams. Mandich finished his career with the Dolphins with 121 receptions for 1,406 yards and 23 touchdowns. When he left the Dolphins, he ranked sixth in team annals in receptions, tied for second in touchdown catches, Anthony Cesario and tied for seventh in scoring. Even now, in current Dolphin history, he is second among tight ends in scoring, fifth in receptions and second in touchdown catches. After his playing career ended, Mandich embarked on a successful business and civic career in South Florida and became a beloved member of the Dolphin broadcast team for 17 years. His famous All Right, Miami! exclamation after exciting Dolphin plays became his hallmark catch phrase. His passion for the team was evident in every broadcast he did, and his unique on-air presence and personality captivated Dolphins fans everywhere. Mandich was always there to help the members of the Dolphins family as a broadcaster and as fundraiser, leading his weekly Touchdown Club for ten years that contributed more than $300,000 to help former players who have fallen on hard times. He also played a lead role in the formation of the Dolphins Cycling Challenge, that in its inaugural year had more than 400 cyclists taking part from November 20-21, 2010 to cycle across three South Florida counties and raise $533,106 to support cancer research and treatment for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. A public memorial service to celebrate the life and achievements of Mandich was held on May 4, 2011 in front of a crowd of several thousand fans Harry Galbreath Barry Hill at Sun Life Stadium. At the celebration it was announced that Mandich will be inducted into the Dolphin Honor Roll as a Special Contributor. Cesario, who passed away September 25, 2011 at the age of 34, was on the practice squad of the Dolphins in 2001. He began his three-year NFL career as a third-round draft choice of Jacksonville in 1999. An eighth-round draft choice of the Dolphins in 1988 from the University of Tennessee, Galbreath, passed away July 27, 2010, at the age of 45. He played with Miami from 1988-92 and went on to play with the Packers and Jets during his nine-year NFL career. One of the first players from Palm Beach County to play for the Dolphins, Hill passed away December 29, 2010 at the age of 57. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 1975 Draft and played 20 games with the Dolphins before six knee operations - three on each knee - ended his career. A veteran of two Super Bowls with Miami, Laakso, who passed away December 25, 2010 at the age of 54, played with the Dolphins from 197884 after joining the team as a third-round draft choice from Tulane in 1978. Eric Laakso Lee, who passed away April 26, 2011, at the age of 44, played with the Dolphins from 1990-91. An 11-year NFL veteran, Lee also played with Tampa Bay, San Diego and Shawn Lee Chicago.

GAME PLAN
ith a new head coach and a new franchise quarterback in first overall pick Cam Newton, the Carolina Panthers are starting over in 2011 after the second-worst season in franchise history. The 2010 season was both nightmarish and unexpected for the Panthers, who had finished 12-4 only two years earlier. In fact, the 10-game drop over two seasons was the biggest in the NFL in more than a decade. The only time Carolina had a worse record was in 2001 when the Panthers ended up 1-15. Ron Rivera is the new head coach in Carolina after taking over for John Fox, who is now in Denver. Rivera went to Carolina after guiding the No. 1-ranked defense in the league last year in San Diego. Rivera also was in charge of the defense in Chicago in 2006 when the Bears made it to the Super Bowl against Indianapolis in South Florida. Rivera inherited a team that has its share of talent despite last years record. The Panthers, who opened the preseason with a 20-10 victory over the New York Giants, were the victims last season of a few key injuries along with poor quarterback play, which resulted in the lowest-ranked pass offense and total offense in the NFL. But few teams can match Carolinas depth at running back with DeAngelo Williams, who resigned with the Panthers as a free agent this summer, Jonathan Stewart and speedster Mike Goodson. The receiving corps is led by Steve Smith, who remained in Carolina despite being the subject of trade rumors before the start of training camp. Injuries in 2010 contributed to Smith having his least productive season since 2004, but the 11year veteran still has five 1,000-yard seasons on his resume. Most of the attention on offense, though, will be on Newton, the Heisman Trophy winner who led Auburn to the national title last season. Newton may or may not be the starting quarterback when Carolina opens the regular season, but he figures to seen plenty of action in tonights game. In addition to being able to re-sign Williams, the Panthers also were able to keep their top defensive free agent when they re-signed end Charles Johnson. He easily led the Panthers in sacks last season with 11.5, more than three times as many as second-place finishers Everette Brown and James Anderson. Rivera ran a 3-4 defense in San Diego, but he is keeping Carolinas 4-3 system. The Panthers finished 18th in total defense in
New Head Coach Ron Rivera inherits a team that struggled on offense in 2010 but does have its share of playmakers, such as wide receiver Steve Smith.
the NFL in 2010 and allowed 30 points or more in almost half their games (seven). To be fair, the defense wasnt helped by an offense that had trouble moving the ball. In addition to Johnson, the Panthers other notable players on defense are middle linebacker Jon Beason and cornerback Chris Gamble, a former first-round pick who is hoping to bounce back after a disappointing and injury-riddled 2010 season. In the kicking game, the Panthers will bring a familiar face to Sun Life Stadium, as former Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare takes over for John Kasay, the last remaining member from the Panthers inaugural 1995 team. Mare came over as a free agent from Seattle, where he made a trip to the playoffs last season. The Panthers missed the postseason the last two years and will have a hard time getting back there in 2011 playing in a division that features legitimate Super Bowl contenders in Atlanta and New Orleans. But Carolina is hoping to at least get back in the right direction in 2011 after the disaster that was 2010.

JARED ODRICK
The Dolphins running game will have a new look in 2011 with the arrival of second-round pick Daniel Thomas and Reggie Bush. Together, they could give the Dolphins a thunder and lightning combination. The Dolphins also will figure to take a look tonight at young running backs like Kory Sheets and Nic Grigsby, as well as third-year veteran Lex Hilliard. The Dolphins also will be looking to build some cohesiveness along the offensive line and continue the development of first-round pick Mike Pouncey at center. In Carolina, the Dolphins will face a team that was a lot better against the run than its 2010 ranking (23rd) might suggest. The Panthers were tied for seventh when it came to yards per rushing attempt.
CORVEY IRVIN
The Dolphins run defense is looking to build off its strong finish of 2010 when it held five of the last six opponents under 100 yards rushing, and Carolina presents a good preseason test in that department. With DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson, the Panthers have one of the most talented running back groups in the entire league. The offensive line, led by tackle Jordan Gross and center Ryan Kalil, also is solid. But the Dolphins counter with a veteran and talented front seven. The defensive line is particularly deep. Of particular interest in this game will be watching 2010 first-round pick Jared Odrick, who missed all but one game of his rookie season.
JONATHAN STEWART
JASON TAYLOR
MATT MOORE
The Dolphins return the nucleus of their passing game, including top receivers Brandon Marshall and Davone Bess. Tonights game will give Dolphins fans their first close-up look at speedster Clyde Gates, the rookie fourth-round pick from Abilene Christian, as well as versatile rookie Charles Clay, a fullback/tight end from the University of Tulsa. Chad Henne and Matt Moore figure to both get turns at quarterback for the Dolphins. The Panthers pass rush is led by defensive end Charles Johnson, who recorded 11.5 sacks last season and was re-signed as a free agent this summer. Safety Charles Godfrey led the team in interceptions in 2010 with five, while cornerback Captain Munnerlyn had three.
CHARLES JOHNSON
This matchup should be interesting because of the presence of Carolina quarterback Cam Newton, the first overall pick in the 2011 draft. The Panthers also have Jimmy Clausen, who was a second-round choice last year. Carolinas top receiver is Steve Smith, but its questionable hell see a lot of action tonight given a finger injury he sustained in training camp. From the Dolphins standpoint, the pass defense will feature the return of veteran linebacker Jason Taylor. The Dolphins are looking for him to provide a passrushing complement to Pro Bowl linebacker Cameron Wake. In the secondary, young players like safety Reshad Jones and rookie seventh-round pick Jimmy Wilson will be looking to make an impression.
CAM NEWTON
Special Teams
The Dolphins entered training camp set when it comes to their kicker (Dan Carpenter) and punter (Brandon Fields), but things arent quite as settled when it comes to the return game. In particular, the team would love to see someone emerge as a big-play kickoff returner and rookie Clyde Gates will be given every opportunity to show he can be that guy. On punt returns, rookie free agent Phillip Livas showed big-play ability in the preseason opener with a 75-yard touchdown and hell be looking to build on that performance. The Dolphins also will be looking to start finding the right combination for their kick coverage teams. The big story with Carolinas special teams is the arrival of kicker Olindo Mare. The long-time Dolphins kicker is taking over for John Kasay, who had been with Carolina since the first year of the franchise in 1995. Carolinas return game is spearheaded by Captain Munnerlyn, who had the teams longest kickoff (64) and punt return (37) in 2010.

Panthers Edition
The game against the Panthers, combined with the preseason opener against Atlanta and the Aug. 27 game at Tampa Bay, marks the second time in three years the Dolphins face three NFC South teams in the preseason.
The Dolphins 27-17 victory over Carolina in 2009 was part of a 4-0 preseason, the fifth perfect preseason showing in team history. The others came in 1998, 1981, 1979 and 1976.
Carolinas only touchdown in the 2006 preseason meeting a 19-10 Panthers victory came on a 98-yard kickoff return by then-rookie DeAngelo Williams.
Three players who started the preseason game against Carolina in 2006 are still on the Dolphins roster offensive lineman Vernon Carey, linebacker Jason Taylor and cornerback Will Allen.
When the teams met in the preseason in 2009, Dolphins cornerbacks Vontae Davis wore 24 instead of his current 21, and Sean Smith wore 31 instead of his current 24.
The Dolphins have given up an average of 194.5 yards in their two preseason meetings against Carolina, but have surrendered punt returns of 58 and 40 yards, in addition to Williams 98-yard kickoff return.

Lex Hilliard gave the Dolphins the lead for good with a 39-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Dolphins quarterbacks Chad Pennington, Chad Henne and Pat White combined to go 20-for30 for 184 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and a passer rating of 105.4. Running back Ronnie Brown (28-yard reception) and fullback Joe Kowalewski (2-yard reception) scored the other Miami touchdowns. Matt Moore, now with the Dolphins, saw action at quarterback for Carolina and was 4for-9 for 41 yards. The Dolphins were clinging to a 20-17 lead when safety Chris Clemons recovered a muffed punt to set up the last touchdown with 3:03 left in the fourth quarter.

In this exclusive column for Playbook, Head Coach Tony Sparano discusses the challenges of this training camp as well as touching on a variety of personnel topics
Q. When you got the players together for the first time following the strike, what was your message to them?
TS: It was all about winning, nothing about anything in the past. I could care less about anything that happened in the past. We are thinking about moving forward now. Its about our team. I presented our team goals and our philosophies. They were pretty clear and the players understand the direction we want to head in.
aided that process a little. Some of the free agent players we signed and some of the exclusiverights guys were not able to practice until Aug. 4, so we had the first several days without 12 guys being able to practice. That allowed the young players to get some additional practice time.
Q. Have you ever had the opportunity to coach a player with the skill set of a Reggie Bush?
TS: I can say Ive never had a player quite like him. All I know is that I remember being on the sideline in Dallas when we played New Orleans and I always felt that Reggie was one of the most explosive guys that I have seen, especially on the field level.
Q. Put into words what this offseason was like for you, waiting for the two sides to settle?
TS: It was kind of an eerie offseason. It was at times out here lonely. Ive tried to manage my coaches as best as I could. Those guys worked hard and long hours during that time. But I did get them out of the building a little bit knowing that their summer was going to get cut short, and thats what happened. We had an awful lot of time to spend on football and learn about each other as coaches.
Q. This training camp has to be one of the most difficult tests you have had as a head coach, getting players ready in such a short time without the benefit of an offseason program and with so many important evaluations to make. Can you talk about this?
TS: It was a very difficult summer because of all the possible scenarios out there that you had to plan and prepare for. But Im very fortunate that this coaching staff did an outstanding job in preparation. We were ready when the new rules came down and we put our plan in place. The players, to their credit, came back in good shape. Maybe not the way they would have been if we had the offseason training program, but they still showed a lot of maturity in their preparation.
Jason Taylor will bring a lot of leadership to the locker room, but he also can still rush the passer.
Chad Henne in several areas. If the lockout was good for anything or anybody, it was good for Chad. Most quarterbacks in the league really had to be the ringleaders in the lockout time for the player-only workouts. Why show up if the quarterback isnt there? In this case, that really worked well for Chad. Our team responded well to him from what I can gather. That helped put him out there in front. All that being said, hes throwing the ball better down the field and thats another area of improvement. And he has tremendous, tremendous knowledge. Hes the guy with the answers right now in this offense.
Q. Even at 37 years old, tell us in your mind what Jason Taylor brings to this team?
TS: First of all, a sense of veteran leadership. Prior to Jason coming to the team, Will Allen was the oldest player on the team. Getting Jason, added a veteran presence that was needed in our locker room. Hes unselfish. Hes not afraid to share. That being said, he can still rush the passer. We saw that in playing against him twice last year. This guy can still play. There is still gas in his tank and he still has a passion to win in this league.
Q. Are you confident that there is time to give the young players a fair shot?
TS: I think there is enough time. You have to
Q. Finally, what is your message to the fans as they get ready for the start of a new season?
TS: I want the fans to know that is a team that has the capability to be an explosive team. Weve worked hard to reach that point. Were very excited going into this season to play in front of our home fans.

In 2009, Sparano accomplished the difficult task of balancing the need to add youth to his squad while keeping the Dolphins in the thick of the playoff hunt. Like he did with quarterback Chad Henne, who won seven of his 13 overall starts in his first season seeing regular action under center, Sparano furthered the growth of fellow second-year players Davone Bess, who led the team in receptions, Jake Long, who was named to his second consecutive Pro Bowl squad, defensive ends Kendall Langford and Phillip Merling, as well as Pro Bowl kicker Dan Carpenter. In 2008, Sparanos first year as the Dolphins head coach, he guided the team to a single-season turnaround matched just once in NFL history. Taking over a 1-15 squad from a year earlier, he led the Dolphins to an 11-5 record and the AFC East title. His 10-game improvement has been achieved only one other time in league annals, in 1999 when the Indianapolis Colts went from 3-13 to 13-3.

eff Ireland was named the Dolphins general manager on Jan. 2, 2008. He joined the club after a seven-year stint (2001-07) with the Dallas Cowboys, including his last three seasons there as the teams vice president of college and pro scouting. In his role with the Dolphins, Ireland not only is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the college and pro personnel departments, but also helps manage the teams salary cap and player contracts. He supervises all scouting efforts that relate to the college draft, free agency, the Canadian Football League, and personnel of the other 31 NFL teams. Ireland works hand in hand with Head Coach Tony Sparano in implementing a personnel plan to build the Dolphins into a championship-caliber team. In Irelands three seasons in Miami, he already has seen some of his acquisitions play a key role in the development of the team. Last season, Jake Long made the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive year, while Cameron Wake and Randy Starks blossomed into Pro Bowl performers for the first time. Veteran acquisitions such as Brandon Marshall, Karlos Dansby and Richie Incognito were major contributors to the Dolphins, while rookie draft choice Koa Misi was a starter for the team all season. Following the 2010 season, Ireland significantly upgraded the teams offense through the college draft.

of Attention
So as long as I keep on a positive note and keep earning the guys respect I think Ill be good.
MIKE POUNCEY
It was a good thing that hes played in the Florida heat because he took a lot of snaps out there, which is good, said Head Coach Tony Sparano, who is relying on Pouncey to anchor a rebuilt offensive line. There are so many natural things that he did in practice that made him stand out, specifically some things that he did in the run game and some things that he did in protections drills during one-on-ones. The last rookie center to start all 16 games for the Dolphins was Samson Satele in 2007, but he didnt have the added burden of being a first-round pick on his shoulders. Taken 15th overall by the Dolphins in April, Pouncey knew a lot was going to be expected of him right away. He had a very brief window the day after the first round when the NFL lockout was lifted for 24 hours to come to Davie, meet Sparano and his staff and get a first look at the playbook. Three months passed before the converted guard could talk to Sparano and new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll again. His agent worked feverishly with General Manager Jeff Ireland to get his contract done as quickly as possible so that Pouncey wouldnt miss too many practices. Im progressing each day and earning the guys respect, so as long as I keep on a positive note and keep earning the guys respect I think
POUNCEY,
from page 45
Ill be good, Pouncey said. Im definitely caught up on everything thanks to the guys in the room because even though they dont have to stay in extra because I know theyre tired and want to go to sleep, theyre pulling me in the room and teaching me the plays. In addition to the veteran offensive linemen on the Dolphins getting him up to speed, Pouncey also has the luxury of leaning on his twin brother, Maurkice, who is in his second year with the Pittsburgh Steelers and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie center. The two have been trading texts throughout camp because their time is being taken up by practices and meetings, but his brothers advice has been simple just keep pushing and working. Another advantage Pouncey has is the fact that hes going up against one of the toughest defenses in the league and an upper-echelon nose tackle in Paul Soliai. Mike Pouncey was in the starting lineup when the Dolphins opened the preseason at Atlanta. Back in that first full-contact practice, Pouncey actually stood up Soliai twice. The 6-foot-5, 303-pound Pouncey clearly coming out hard, said Soliai. There are a lot made an impression on Soliai. of days left, so well just see how he progressHe was pretty good. We both talked about es. just giving each other a good look and just Even though they dont line up directly over
him in practice, defensive ends Kendall Langford and Jared Odrick also liked what they saw out of the rookie on his first day. Odrick planned to test Pouncey early on before switching roles and helping him prepare for opponents. Another important trait Pouncey exhibited on his first day on the job that Sparano noticed on game film from Florida was his football smarts. Its something he hopes to continue to see as camp and the preseason go along. His awareness in there was good. There was a lot of stuff happening in there with games and we had third-down pressures coming at us and he really didnt know any of this, Sparano said. This guy came into the meeting room here this morning and did a super job of handling that. So thats just good football awareness of a smart player. You could see the athlete but the way he reacted to some of those things that were happening was good. How Pouncey reacts in that Monday night season opener against the New England Patriots and imposing nose tackle Vince Wilfork will give Sparano a better indication of just how good he can be in the NFL.
ared Odrick didnt quite know how to answer the question, so he took the comedic approach.
What will I bring to the defense? Odrick repeated. Great charm and good looks. Cmon, lets not kid ourselves now. Obviously, Odrick left out his great sense of humor. Oh, and his ability to disrupt things along the line of scrimmage. Thats really what the Dolphins want to see out of him now that hes back after missing practically all of his rookie season because of leg injuries. After a slow start in camp and the preseason, Odrick was starting to be that kind of player in 2010 and hes hoping to pick up where he left off. Thats what the Dolphins have in mind as well. I have very high expectations, said Coach Tony Sparano. I dont know if thats a good thing to do for Jared, but probably if I did it backwards, he wouldnt think too much of me. Odricks return to the lineup should bolster an already impressive defensive line, a position that might have been the strongest on the team a year ago. With Odrick back, the Dolphins have six legitimate starting-quality defensive linemen the others being Randy Starks, Paul Soliai, Kendall Langford, Phillip Merling and Tony McDaniel. Odrick started in his only game as a rookie, but hes quick to say that being a starter isnt his focal point. Ill say this until Im blue in the face, I said it through college and Ill say it here: This is a production league, Odrick said. If you dont produce, youre not starting. If you dont produce, youre not playing. I really dont think it matters whether youre starting or whatever it is. Of course, the expectation is that Odrick will become a starter at some point. He was, after all, the Dolphins first-round pick in 2010 after they traded down in the first round in a deal with San Diego. The Dolphins had enough confidence in Odrick and his talents that they moved Starks from defensive end to nose tackle, even though Starks returned to his old position after Odrick was injured. Odrick understands very well the expectations that come with being a first-round pick, and hes not fazed by them one bit.
ODRICK,
from page 49
Forget the high expectations of being a first-round pick, he said. I have high expectations for myself. Anybody that knows me and these coaches and these players, theres nobody screaming at myself more than me. Whether its just a hesitation step, a false step, wrong step, hands not in the right place, Im screaming at myself more than anybody. Its not for anything else but just trying to better myself. My expectations might be higher than what you guys have for me. When I see something on Twitter, Im already thinking that already. Im already there. I know what I should be doing and its going to happen this year. Even though he was limited to one regular season game, Odrick said he was able to gain valuable experience. Because of that, he said he didnt feel like a rookie coming into this years camp, particularly because he didnt have to perform rookie duties. Ive been through camp and I made it through camp healthy and thats what I plan on doing this year, Odrick said. In that aspect, I dont feel like a rookie on the field and off the

field. On the field I really feel like I got a jumpstart on things because I went through it last year, but then off the field I dont have to go get extra dip, I dont have to go pick up lunch, I dont have to do things like that. In his only game action of 2010, in the opener at Buffalo, Odrick recorded only one tackle but it was good for a 4-yard loss by Bills running back C.J. Spiller.
Its the type of big play thats a bonus from a 3-4 defensive lineman, whose primary role is to free up the linebackers to make tackles. Odrick, whos a rock-solid 6-5, 304 pounds, looks the part of a 3-4 defensive end. In fact, thats what he was projected to play after lining up at defensive tackle at Penn State. The Dolphins got a glimpse of what Odrick could do last season. They want to see more. After all, they only got one game out of their first-round pick last year. Around the league, Tennessee defensive end Derrick Morgan was the only other No. 1 pick who played in less than half his teams games. So, in essence, the Dolphins are almost getting an additional first-round pick in 2011. His movement, his strength, his physical conditioning right now are outstanding, Sparano said. He seems very explosive. I have high expectations for him and Jared has high expectations for himself. I watched him (early in camp) get really upset with himself over a pass rush. This guy has a pretty high expectation for himself, so I am hoping he is a major contributor in that group.

group of Finatics along the way. The West Park youngsters impressed him with their knowledge of the mammals his team is named after. I had a blast and they were very knowledgeable of dolphins, said Polite, whose fiance is a fourth-grade teacher at Watkins Elementary. We had a little Q&A about the dolphin habitats, what they do in the water and their anatomy and the kids are very smart, so they had fun with it. The actual title of the book Polite was reading from was Do Whales Have Belly Buttons? But he swapped out the word whales with dolphins since they are so similar. Some of the kids were surprised that the answer was yes, but then Polite explained why. It was wonderful to see that the kids wanted to come to the library and get to meet a celebrity, said branch manager Tanisha Jones. I could see that the majority, if not all of them, were connecting with Lou and I think that they were inspired by him. Polite preached the importance of hard work and dedication both in the classroom and in life to the students.
All of these are important lessons, especially at this young and developmental age and this being summertime, he said. If youre not working that brain and that muscle, it gets fatigued and you forget what you learned. So you need to keep reading and stay active and go exercise your brain so it will help retain what you learned the previous year. To hear Polite do such a good job getting that message across to the kids was music to the ears of Gina Moon, youth services coordinator for the Broward County Libraries. It fell right in line with the Summer Game Piece she and the Dolphins have been promoting over the years. Each young participant in the program is given a pamphlet (or game piece set) to follow throughout the summer. Its formatted like a board game where the child gets to move his or piece around the board after finishing a book and collect all sorts of prizes. We printed 20,000 game pieces and were running out, Moon said. Were asking them to read every day and make regular trips to the library, and in return they get a chance to do something like this where they get to meet a Dolphins player or a Dolphins cheerleader. motivate the kids with that message about putting in the extra work and we want them to realize that with hard work you can make a difference. Judging by the reaction of the kids from the moment TD entered the room and throughout Polites presentation, that message seems to be hitting home. Jeanette Sparano spent an afternoon in late July with Ann Scott, wife of Governor Rick Scott, at the Delray Beach Public Library. Attentive boys and girls of all ages surrounded the First Lady of Florida and the First Lady of the Dolphins all eager to listen and to learn. Jeanette Sparano followed Scott, who read Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, by reading The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest. T.D. the Mascot and two Miami Dolphins cheerleaders also were on hand to entertain the kids, some who came from the Milagro Center and the others from Palm Bay Park and New Innovations, which are part of the citys summer camps. Jeanette Sparano gave the last word on the event, knowing that football was about to dominate her life once again. What I really want to get across to them is that just because schools out of session it doesnt mean you just stop all the learning, she said. Dont stop reading because when they get back to school, studies show it can take them up to a month or six weeks and sometimes longer just to get to where they were in June, so not even to get ahead but just to regain what they lost. It just reinforces how important education is throughout their lives.
Wide receiver Davone Bess (15) and fullback Lousaka Polite (36) took part in the reading program this summer, as did former Dolphins linebacker Sean Clancy (above).

LB Kim Bokamper
out at St. Thomas. It was hot, it was your first practice of the day and you knew you had one or two more coming. You ended up doing the goal-line drill and then gassers after practice.
Dansby: I say the mental challenge is coming out each and every day and giving the same effort. I think thats the hardest part of training camp is trying to give the same effort each and every day. Bokamper: Just fighting the grind every day. It becomes monotonous and I go back to the two-a-days when we used to be in training camp for six weeks straight, nine weeks when he had six preseason games. It was the same thing every day and every week and after you get two or three weeks in you become robotic, so thats the tough part of it.
camaraderie is built during training camp, just through the experience and some of the hazing that goes on. Theres just a lot of team camaraderie thats built all the way around. Bokamper: I think a lot does because youre together 12-13 hours a day in meetings and on the field, so theres always some pranks or something to kind of break the ice. I think those are the things that bring teams together and finding out which guys can gut it out for you. I think that goes a long way to trusting guys on your team.
Is there a secret for not wearing down physically as you get deeper in training camp?
Dansby: The cold tub. Thats the secret. I dread it the most, but it works the best. Bokamper: I think you get in better condition as you go and you get in better shape as you move on, so by the time you get to the regular season you should be in good shape. I think you should be in the best shape of the season when you come out of training camp, but cold tubs help.
How important is it to establish habits in training camp that carry over into the season?
Dansby: Its very important. You have to start fast and if you start those habits in training camp you should be able to have a lot of carryover to the season. Bokamper: I think thats what training camp is about. I think its about fundamentals and making sure your fundamentals are right, working on them every day. I usually went into training camp with one or two things that I wanted to add to my repertoire, so I worked on those every day and every game.

JIM LANGER
Dolphins Honor Roll Call of 1990 Hall of Fame Class of 1987 Center 6-2, 250 South Dakota State NFL: 1970-81 Dolphins: 1970-1979
im Langer, the rock in the middle of the Miami offensive line during the Dolphins championship years of the 1970s, was enshrined in the Dolphin Honor Roll at Sun Life Stadium on Nov. 19, 1990. Considered one of the greatest NFL centers of all time and a hard-working and quick blocker, Langer was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987, his first year of eligibility. Many qualified observers insist that Langer was the most proficient performer on a talent-laden offensive line that fueled Miamis vaunted ballcontrol offense. Langer joined the Dolphins as a free agent in 1970, stayed with the club for 10 years through the 1979 season and then wound up his career with the Minnesota Vikings in 1980 and 1981. In his decade with the Dolphins, Langer developed from an obscure substitute to one of the finest centers ever to play. Coming out of South Dakota State in 1970 as a middle linebacker, Langer went undrafted and was signed as a free agent by the Cleveland Browns but was released on the final cut. Langer was picked up on waivers by the Dolphins. For two years, he saw only limited action as a guard and a special teams player. But in 1972, he was switched to center, won the starting job and anchored the offensive line which helped set a then-NFL record with 2,960 rushing yards. In fact, Langer holds the distinction of having played every offensive down in the Dolphins perfect 1972 season. He remained the NFLs most dominant center as the Dolphins repeated as Super Bowl champions in 1973. Langer was named first-team All-Pro four times and All-AFC five straight years from 1973 to 1977 and was also picked for the Pro Bowl six straight times. During that period, he started in

three AFC Championship Games and Super Bowls VI, VII and VIII. Continuing to play in spite of injuries, Langer saw service in 141 consecutive games from
1972 until a knee injury ended his Miami tenure with seven games left in the 1979 season. Early in the 1980 campaign, he was traded to the Vikings.

In a 27-9 victory over the Chicago Bears in a Monday night game at Pro Player Stadium, Ricky Williams became just the third player (fourth time) in NFL history to amass back-toback 200-yard rushing games. He ran for 216 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. He joined Hall of Famers O.J. Simpson (1973, 1976) and Earl Campbell (1980) as the only players to achieve this feat.
BRIAN URLACHER
Alain Poupart game story: The Dolphins werent going to spoil a great effort by Ricky Williams two weeks in a row. Not playing at home. Not playing against a Chicago Bears team that looks nothing like the one that captured a division title with a 13-3 record only one season ago. No, on this night, the Dolphins rode Williams second consecutive 200-yard rushing performance and cruised to an easy 27-9 victory that helped them keep pace with the New England Patriots in the hotly contested AFC East.

It played so well on Monday Night Football, Williams becoming the first back since 1980 to put together two straight 200-yard games, with (Ricky) Williams almost single-handedly taking the teeth out of the Bears. This guy is incredible. Hes already gained the 1,500 yards that the Saints needed to get a first-round pick out of the Dolphins. Good thing they dont get a second one for 2,000 yards. Could challenge that one, too.

Aside from Dan, who are some of your other favorite players?
Richman: I also loved Ricky Williams, and I wish he had come along a decade earlier. Imagine Marino with a running game! I also met Drew Brees, and hes a real football player both on and off the field. My good friend Bobby McCray used to play for the Saints, and I met Brees and youd think he was the Maytag repairman. He was warm, kind, and gave everyone equal treatment. He even sent me a message on Twitter! There are very few players that I think hold that standard, in terms of first meeting them.
How exactly does a kid from Brooklyn end up rooting for the Miami Dolphins?
Richman: Great question. My older cousin Keith is the closest thing I have to a big brother, and he was an amazing athlete all through his

life and he dug the Dolphins. That was part of it. But ultimately the reason Im a Miami Dolphins fan is because of Dan Marino. I remember my late father, who was the biggest football fan I have ever known, used to stress when I was younger that win or lose, you always have to compete with honor. And I remember at a young age really being struck by Marino. I always remember that if the Dolphins lost, he took it on himself. If someone else struggled, if (Mark) Clayton or (Mark) Duper didnt have it that week, or his O-line caved in and they were hitting him with blitzes like when (Mark) Gastineau was playing, he never threw anyone under the bus. And when there were moments when he absolutely was the catalyst for victory, when he would make a pass between a cornerback and a receiver that was like the size of an apartment mailbox, he always gave credit to the receivers and his line. He was always the model of dignity. Marino is also very involved with autism because of his first-hand experience with his son. Since the good Lord has given me the opportunity to give back, Im also very involved with autism
Being a football fan for most of your life, what are some of your most memorable NFL moments?
Richman: Its the little moments for me, like when Herschel Walker made that run without his shoe in Minnesota. Its Drew Brees kissing his son after winning the Super Bowl. It was Marino breaking the yardage and touchdown records, or Jason Witten making that run after the catch without his helmet. I also remember Eli Mannings escape against the Patriots (in Super Bowl XLII). I was at a party with a friend of mine, and I remember looking around the room at a bunch of strangers and we were all like clinging to each other and jumping up and down in disbelief. Then all of the sudden theres that (David) Tyree catch against his helmet. It was like, did Cirque De Soleil draw up this play?
