COURTNEY LUDWIG

In starting my business and on my way to becoming a professional photographer I needed a name that would t and what better name than The Camera Eye Photography (a Rush song written by Pye Dubious). It was catchy too, and I was well on my way. Most of my photography consists of photographing musicians in their element but I have not been limited to photographing just musicians. In my business I have been known for being hired to photograph at events as well as photograph various venues, I photograph from babies all the way to Senior portraits, I am also a family, wedding and animal photographer. I am very reasonable in my pricing and depending on the photography I offer photos on CD with or without watermarking and I also offer affordable prints and print packages. For more info on The Camera Eye Photography as well as contacting me, please go to www.thecameraeyephotography. com or to see my latest work please visit: www.facebook.com/thecamerahaseyes

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

A little over a year ago I was a self described simple single mother after ending a 10 year marriage. I went to work, went shopping and came home to my kids..thats it..nothing else. Then things changed fast. I got invited to the Elbow Rooms sunday afternoon open mic jam. It was (and still is) awesomegreat music, friendly people and a totally laid back atmosphere. I met a lot of people in bands and was blown away by the sheer amount of talent in this town. I also found out that Tucson is a hard place to be in a band. It is hard to get a gig, and even harder to get paid enough to not lose money on a gig. Tucson is a town with such musical diversity, from country to rock, mariachis to mosh pits, with everything else in between. Trying to get these musicians and their bands noticed, and bringing attention to some awesome, but neglected by the mainstream, venues was something that needed to happen in this town. I had the good luck to meet Gregg Ziekert last fall, and he told me to check out his website BSceneLive.com. I did and was impressed with the content and the extensive calendar. He told me he was going to be putting a print edition together and I thought it was a great idea and wished him luck. Over the next several months we had a lot of discussions about the magazine, and I jokingly told him he should make me editor, then maybe not so jokingly told him after he told me he lost another editor to a day job. He nally took me seriously a few months ago and the rest is history I guess. I love this magazine, and love being able to have a part in getting the word out about the phenomenal talent here, and the cool places to go. Its an amazing feeling to know that you are, in some small way, not only getting the word out and letting people know what they are missing, but maybe also getting people motivated to head out to the bars, the clubs, the coffee joints, hell anywhere there is live music or a great event happening. If we can get the people out there then the venues will make more money, and in turn hire more live music, and be able to pay them what they are worth. Then maybe we can put this sleepy little town, with such a surprising amount of talent, on the map. So I guess my vision for the magazine (and the website) is to have them get people to go out there, have a blast..and BSCENE! About me: I do have a day job, host the breakfast shows at the Rivers Edge and Bashful Bandit on the weekends, 4 kids, way too many animals and a habit of using my words a little too much sometimes. I am hoping to go back to college and get my degree in my spare time next semester. I guess the 4 kids were the perfect training to try to manage a group of writers and photographers as talented, diverse and opinionated as have contributing to both the magazine and website. There is never a dull moment around here, and if there were Im sure one of us would start some shit with someone else and get it going again.

BSCENELIVE RELEASE PARTY @ THE ROCK!

his was the night everyone in Tucson had been waiting for. Weeks of anticipation were nally over and many had come to celebrate an important event for Tucson Rock Alliance. August 6th 2011 was Tucson Rock Alliance and BSceneLives day for celebrating the publication of their magazine, and The Rock was a perfect place for this event. The Rock has been in Tucson for many years hosting events almost every night and this event was a perfect opportunity for The Rock to let the BSceneLive magazine launch party help make history for TRA Productions, BSceneLive, and Tucson citizens. The Rock is a photographers playground, lots of stage room to move around and capture the pure essence of people in their moments of fun when the singers come screaming words in their faces. When I arrived at The Rock I had just enough time for a couple drinks before it was time to capture history in the making. The

Rock has a big outdoor patio, and that night in Tucson had beautiful weather compared to our 100 degree days. There was a gentle rain to relax those who came from the intense show inside. I liked the fact that there were a lot of beers to choose from, the majority of it bottled. Im a fresh beer straight from the tap kind of guy and they had me covered there too. This show had a lot to bring its audience. Cold Equation is a band that I think has nally found their mark and will continue and go far. They sing Rob Zombie songs and I think they did great. At rst I was questioning if they had a interest in Rob Zombies material, and it was after their last song when they announced to the audience that they were playing for Rob Zombies brother, Powerman 5000, which is probably a dream come true for them. I took several pictures of the audience during this show segment, and all they say is this show is intense. Disciples of Prime was easily one of my favorite bands of that night. Trish, the singer, is beautifully

talented. One audience

member was telling me she had over 25 years of singing experience. The crowd went wild after she sang a song dedicated to Gabrielle Giffords and other victims of the Tucson shooting tragedy. The crowd watched in amazement during the graceful tune. What was truly amazing is Trish had a cold during the show and she still came out and sang like a true champion. The main event of the evening was Canobliss. This was the point of the show everyone was waiting for and they were my favorite band to photograph. The singer Johan Maldonado knew exactly how to re the crowd up, and I got amazing shots of him screaming to the crowd. I found it a challenge to get the true bass playing personality of Chenzo Vidalez. He is like a tank moving around that stage. I didnt want to get in the playing eld of that steam engine so I steered clear to avoid injury. TRA productions has outdone themselves again, and gained a lot of respect from the people of Tucson and the music industry. I cannot wait to snap pictures and write up one of their shows again.

alking into Rileys at 5140 N La Cholla Blvd, one may notice a different kind of feeling. Its not a place where men in tuxedos toast with wine glasses and discuss bonds and stocks. No, its where people who, after a long day of work, come, sit down, drink, laugh, and are encouraged to be loud and brash. Whether a regular or a newbie, someone will talk to you, making you feel either at home or very uncomfortable, sometimes both at once. Once a lively place, its calmed down considerably after Ken Riley passed away. One wouldnt be able to tell on July 13th, however, as everyone gathered to celebrate the late owners birthday. Described as a dive bar by bartender Kevin Schroder, the fairlypriced, family owned bar is also the largest seller of Baileys in Tucson. Famous for their Irish Car Bombs, they also host weekly horseshoe tournaments every Thursday, karaoke Thursday through Saturday, free pool on Sundays, and different drink specials Sunday through Wednesday. The music and lighting set an atmosphere very suited for a party, and as people began pouring in, it was apparent thats what people were coming for. What a party it would turn out to be,

as the crowd was so thick you could hardly push through to leave. Not that one would want to, as the camaraderie and conversation was enough to pull even the grouchiest out of a funk. It wouldnt be long before the festivities got raunchy as ve lovely ladies lined up for the wet t-shirt contest. Done in elimination style, the contestants were one by one pulled out of the kiddie pool based upon who got the least amount of cheers until there were only two left. After the water made its nal splash, the judging was left up to the crowd one last time, with ear deafening screams and wails, deciding whos hand was to be raised; on this night, regular Jen Shinn was victorious. [The contest] was awesome, said Shinn, prize money in hand, Its my rst time ever doing something like this. I was able to catch up with runner-up Angel Holewa for an interview, and this sketch was the result:

PRESENTED BY THE HUT:

By: Cait Reynolds Photos Provided By The Hut

ugust 27, 2011: grab a drum and meet us at the Epic Caf at 4pm! Its time for the 2nd Annual March of the Moai! Its been two years since Tucsons beloved Tiki made its incredible journey to its permanent home at the Hut, and this year the celebration is going to be bigger than ever. The party starts with a procession down Fourth Avenue from the Epic Caf to The Hut, and kicks off the luau to end all luaus! Live music, re dancers, and even a pig roast! Its a celebration not to be missed and everyone is welcome! Curious how this crazy holiday got started? BSceneLive actually did an impressive amount of digging and uncovered for our readers pleasure THE TALE OF THE TIKI!!! Its a legend 50 years in the making. Our beloved Tiki head was born in the early 70s; the most famous feature of Tucsons nowdefunct Magic Carpet Golf. Couples playing 18 holes at the run down park could actually climb to the top of the Tiki head and look out to see Speedway Blvd. Fifty years of rst dates have kicked off in that Tiki. But when Magic Carpet closed its doors early in 2008, the Tikis future became uncertain. Left untouched on the disintegrating property, it was a frequent victim of vandalism; at one point it was even painted with Occult symbols and fake blood. Things were bleak for our dear Tiki.

Thats when The Hut blessedly intervened. They quickly bought up the statue and had it moved with painstaking care to the front lot of this active Fourth Avenue hotspot. The Tiki was beautifully restored complete with a fresh set of shoulders that are now the doors to enter The Hut. Along with a permanent new home and a restorative makeover, the Tiki also received a plaque from the City of Tucson. Located on the back of the Tikis shoulder, the plaque gives a brief history of the statue and denotes the Tikis new status as a historic landmark. It can not be moved from its new home and

is forever protected under its historic status. and thats the story of how our treasured Tiki head lived happily ever after. The Legend Continues Please join us for the March of the Moai at The Hut to celebrate the anniversary of the Tikis big move and restoration. Its guaranteed to be a good time with great food and music, and a fun, relaxed atmosphere. And seriously, bring a drum!

ONE T-SHIRT AT A TIME

ME

F AMOUS

vividly recall the rst time I asked my neighbor, Sam Ann, what ska was. We were sitting at the bus stop, waiting to be chaperoned to rst period of 8th grade. She (not so subtly) rolled her eyes at me, sighed and said, You may as well just have asked me what rap is! Ska is a feeling, you cant explain it. I felt stupid, but when we got home, she submerged me with Less Than Jake, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish (still my fave!). And so begins a love affair to last a lifetime, fueled primarily though local heroes Troys Bucket! The instant I found out they were playing shows again, I hopped online to see if there was any way I could snag some face time with them pre-show. Though they graciously invited me to swing by a band practice, not once, but TWICE, I regrettably ended up with

strep throat. Being the lady that I am, I kept my cooties to myself. I still remember the last Troys Bucket show; more importantly though, I remember many amazing shows before that. I was heartbroken the night of the last show; my date, a sweet guy named Jimmy, was equally torn up, but mostly because he was trying to maintain a real conversation with me and that just wasnt happening. Ask any Tucson local about Troys Bucket and they will happily regale you of stories about ska shows from days long ago. The raucous band split about 2 years ago but recently announced (and played) a reunion show for fans young and old, me included. The band arrived at the venue the night of their reunion show, and I knew some of the guys casually from way back, some from more recent musical endeavors, and some were new friends just waiting to happen. They greeted me and thanked me for the interest in their band and tossed a t-shirt my way (which is already faded from being washed so much). Ive repeatedly credited Troys Buckets breakup for my loss of love for the local music scene. I went to a few shows after the split, and nothing did it for me; I always left feeling hollow, empty and unfullled. So Troys Bucket bounced from the scene, and so did I. Article Continued Online...

If You Didnt Know, NOW YOU KNOW!

CANOBLISS AT THE ROCK AUG 6, 2011

I told you it was going to be awesome, didnt I? Canobliss shredded The Rock and impressed Tucson! Seriously, did you miss it?! I met the guys at their merchandise booth and was greeted with happy salutations and a hug from Johan. I eventually met Mike, Chenzo, and John, who greeted me in the same fashion. These guys are truly nice guys and a whole lot of fun! We chatted for a bit and I couldnt wait to see them play. There were some great locals opening for them, Disciples of Prime amongst them, so the wait wasnt too harsh. Finally, the time came for Canobliss to hit the stage and I was pumped. They opened with Zombie Parade and the crowd immediately responded. There were more than a few fans singing along and a bunch of guys right up front head banging to the music. Canobliss did not disappoint. Every bit of energy the guys had was sweated out on that stage. Chenzo, the bassist, seriously goes beast when he plays. From the moment that Mike, John, Chenzo, and Johan went on stage they entertained the crowd and played their hearts out for them. The whole show was fun to watch and they sound just as good live as they do on their CDs. In fact, its more fun to watch them play than to just jam out in my car to their music! If you missed it, you better not miss them next time. Canobliss hopes to come back in the Spring, but Im hoping I can convince them to come back sooner. Get online, listen to their music, and buy their stuff ...

PUT SOME STEEL IN IT!

he rst thing you notice about Kraiger Caesar is his amazing long red beard, then all those tattoos and piercings, then he starts to speak and you notice something else: This is possibly the most laid back, down to earth guy you will ever meet. I had the good luck to meet Kraiger about 15 years ago when he was working at The Tattoo Shop. His beard was a little shorter (and a little redder) and he didnt have as much ink, but the personality has not changed. Honestly, the man has the patience of a saint! I used to bring in my daughter and she would be dgeting and acting like a typical kid and he would come over and sit down next to her and talk to her, really talk to her, not your typical condescending adult to child conversation. When I decided that I was going to get some piercings there was never a question in my mind as to who would do them. Kraiger has a way of putting you at ease and making you feel comfortable even if you are apprehensive about whether it will hurt, and his level of professionalism gets you over any anxiety even when you get a piercing in an area that requires you to remove some clothing. Kraiger got into piercing about 15 years ago. He was hanging around the shop a lot af-

ter getting his rst tattoos back in 1994 and John Martin, the piercer at the shop, asked him if he wanted to help out with a tongue piercing. The rest is history. He got his rst piercing, a Prince Albert, when John told him if youre going to be a piercer you need to get pierced. The rst piercing he did was a belly button, denitely not the last one of those he did though. I asked him what was the weirdest piercing he ever did and he said its hard to say because it is all normal to me. As for the coolest piercing, he said its not the piercing, its the people who are cool. That is one of the best parts about being a piercer, meeting the people and having them leave the shop with their head up feeling so good about themselves. Kraiger is denitely a man who loves his job, and we here in Tucson are happy to have him back after he moved to Phoenix for a while to work at a shop there. If you want to get a piercing, or get some cool jewelry for some you already have give Kraiger a call at 795-2477 or just head over to Electric Art Tattoo at 2411 N. Columbus (just North of Grant). You can also check them out on Facebook, Kraigers page is Kraiger Caesar and the shop page is Electric Art Tattoo and Body Piercing. Trust me, you will be happy you did.

MONSOON MAYHEM @ The ROCK

othing dry about this past Saturday night in the downtown/4th Ave/ U of A area. My evening was all killer and no ller. I started out the night stopping by at OMalleys on 4th Ave to say happy birthday to Mr. Rik Hoeinger of Tucson Rock Alliance. The party was just beginning and the Funky Bones were warming things up on the Jack Daniels stage. I only got to stay for a few songs then I was out in the monsoon rain heading towards Peoples Imports for the big Hippie Fest! One Heartbeat was pounding the drums as I walked back into time with people wearing tie dye shirts and sandals. The vibe was all positive and upbeat. If you have not been to the Peoples Imports, I highly recommend you go to the Lost Barrio on Park Ave just south of Broadway and stop in to look at all the amazing art and rugs they have for sale. Many people were enjoying food and

dancing to the hypnotic drum beats and rhythms resonating throughout the building. Two hours into the night and I was out the door heading only a few blocks north to the main event of the evening for myself The Rock! Hellazona Music Group and Frog Promotions brought in Bang Tango from Hollywood, California along with four other great local rock and metal bands. If you enjoy loud rock music, this was the place to be! First on the bill was a band called Legion. They came out scorching hot with amazing vocals by lead singer Rudy Martinez. Legion has that classic 80s metal avor with the high pitched vocals. The sound was primo killer! All the levels were perfect on the soundboard and I was very impressed with how tight this band performed. The bar was set high for the bands to follow. Blues rock band D2D was next on the lineup. They had three sexy go-go dancers on stage with

them. Izzy Rodriguez ripped through chords on his guitar as the girls all shook their money makers for fans up front. D2D got some crowd participation with a sing along in the middle of their set. The ladies in the crowd got to do their own go-go dancing moves with Snake Charmer. I have seen D2D many times and never tire of their version of Jim Morrison and The Doors classic anthems, but then again, I am a huge fan of The Lizard King and all his American poetry. FULL MOON FESTIVAL at PEOPLES IMPORTS

By: Jose Andres Photos By: Rose Price

ne never knows the spontaneity that can be inspired by a full moon. On the night of July 15th, I took the opportunity to experience something unconventional under the gravity of the Tucson moon. I nd myself to be a pretty open individual, and the willingness to grow and learn more about people is what brought me to Peoples Imports that night. This locally owned and operated imported goods store provides a unique experience to the individual hungry for a little bit of cultural avor in their life. Immediately after walking in, I noticed the expansiveness of the space. There was so much to look at in several rooms, compartments and the large back yard. The energy was high, genuine and without reserve. This was a humble event with beautiful souls surrounding each other. The music was loud as the drums banged and the instruments sounded. As the night evolved, people began to trickle onto the dance oor. Their form of dance was tribal, authentic and seemingly meaningful to the individual. I found surprises around every corner, including

a smorgasbord of delectables awaiting me in the back of the store. I delightedly partook in the refreshments then headed out to the back of the expansive venue. This is where I found some interesting people to talk to. The moon, the reason for the monthly celebration, was fully visible from the outside area. This is one of the many reasons I am excited to return. Many things made for a beautiful celebration of natural events that night: the visually stunning space, the sense of comfort it exuded, the variety of people that attended as well as the availability and openness of everyone who attended to remove any prejudices towards each other. The band One Heartbeat topped the experience off and made it a worthwhile happening to attend. If you are a lover of nature, letting go of inhibitions and opening your eyes to people on all walks of life I highly recommend heading over to Peoples Imports at Park and Broadway for this monthly event with an eclectic range of people that is sure to please.
