PowerEdge 1800 InfoBrief - February 2005

Feature Dual Intel Xeon processors with up to 3.6GHz clock speeds, 800MHz FSB and 2MB L2 cache and support for Hyper-Threading technology. Capable of 32-bit or 64-bit computing (RTS+)

Benefit Scalable performance provided by the latest available Intel Xeon processors supporting fast access to system memory with 800MHz front side bus and increased clock speeds (versus 533MHz systems) are designed to allow the processor to process more data in less time. Hyper-Threading helps provide improved performance for multithreaded applications through better use of processor resources. In simplified terms, Hyper-Threading enables the OS to view one physical processor as two logical processors, which helps improve response time because multiple tasks can be run simultaneously in certain application environments.

PCI Express I/O technology Formerly known as 3GIO, PCI Express is the open, standards-based successor to PCI and its variants for server-and client-system I/O interconnects. PCI Express uses highspeed serial link technology similar to that found in Gigabit1 Ethernet, Serial ATA (SATA), and SerialAttached SCSI (SAS). PCI Express reflects an industry trend to replace legacy shared parallel buses with high-speed point-to-point serial buses. Dual channel memory

Investment Protection - PCI Express is compatible with existing PCI drivers, applications, and operating systems and designed from the ground up for 10 Gigabit4 and beyond network bandwidth. The new bus technology is expected to allow the PCI Express transmission rates to keep pace with processor and I/O advances for the next 10 years or more. Scalable Performance This technology has the ability to scale speeds by forming multiple lanes- x1, x4, x8, x16 and in the future x32 lane widths (one x4 and one x8 are supported on the PowerEdge 1800). Being point-to-point connection architecture, PCI Express allows each device to have a dedicated connection without sharing network bandwidth. PCI Express provides higher bandwidth per pin than PCI-X I/O technology. PCI Express provides advanced error checking features and built-in Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities. Low Cost - PCI Express is serial, point-to-point connection architecture for easy electrical routing, and it requires fewer parts (bridges and ASICs), smaller connectors and fewer board layers compared to a PCI-based system design.

The Intel E7520 chipset provides dual channel memory architecture that is designed to speed access to memory (up to 6.4 GB/s memory bandwidth) and to help improve system performance. Low cost SATA RAID options give customers the ability to protect their data from hard drive failures with little investment. The CERC SATA 2S software solution provides support for software RAID 0 or RAID 1. The CERC SATA 6Ch offers greater availability with hardware RAID 0, 1, 5 or 10. For SCSI systems, the PERC4/SC single channel and PERC4/DC dual channel solutions provide RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 support for either internal hard

Feature

Benefit drives or to external storage. Availability

Hot-plug redundant power supplies (1+1) and hot-plug SCSI hard drives Single embedded Gigabit1 NIC

Allows for power supply and SCSI hard drive replacement without bringing the server down. When RAID and power redundancy options are enabled, the system will continue to operate even in the unlikely event of a hard drive or power supply failure. When combined with an additional PCI NIC, the embedded NIC can enable fail-over and load-balancing capabilities to help ensure network connectivity uptime and better traffic efficiency. Embedded NICs are backward compatible to 10/100 Mb/s speeds. Expandability

Up to 12GB of DDR2400MHz SDRAM

Scalable memory allows customers to increase server memory as their application demands increase. Many Internet and network infrastructure applications will benefit from increased memory scalability and fast access to memory data. The two PCI Express I/O slots on separate buses for maximum I/O performance, together with four PCI/PCI-X slots which are optimized for system throughput, allow customers additional functionality and future expansion by adding PCI adapters (RAID cards, Fibre Channel HBAs, Gigabit1 Ethernet) Manageability

Six PCI slots (either PCI, PCI-X or PCI Express) slots

Optional DRAC4/P Advanced Remote System Management True OS independent operation High performance continuous video console Virtual media Command line interface (CLI) Directory service based authentication and authorization (RTS+)

The DRAC4/P PCI card enables users to remotely access, monitor, troubleshoot, and repair/upgrade severs independent of the OS status. Equipped with a Web-based interface using industry-standard SSL protocol to transfer encrypted data, DRAC4/P allows IT administrators to securely manage servers located in different buildings or cities through a network or serial connection and helps save valuable travel time and cost. Removable media is readily available to the user as if they were in front of the server, reducing the need to go to the server for management actions, including installation tasks. The Command Line Interface (CLI) capability allows for the automation of remote access functions via command scripts, thus helping to improve administrators productivity by saving them from manually performing repetitive actions. With capabilities such as server fault alerting, event logging and last screen capture, DRAC4/P assists the administrator in alerting and troubleshooting server problems and helping to speed recovery time. Remote access functions are based upon industry standards including HTTP, SSL, SNMP, and IPMI. In addition, Active Directory support helps simplify integration into customers overall management solution in a Microsoft environment.

Feature Management Controller (BMC) IPMI 1.5 compliant

Benefit conditions such as the fans, the temperature and voltage inside the system. It generates alerts and helps administrators to detect and remedy problems at local and remote locations. Compliance with the IMPI 1.5 industry management standard provides additional functionality such as: remote access to the server via serial port or NIC with the ability to power on/off and power reset the system independent of the operating system or application status.

Dell OpenManage IT Assistant (ITA)

ITA is a standards-based systems management application that monitors and manages Dell systems (desktops, notebooks, servers, storage and network switches). ITA provides for system discovery, remote configuration management, system health monitoring, inventory reporting, and a consolidated launch point to system-specific Dell tools. ITA helps to improve IT efficiency by automating traditionally labor-intensive tasks, minimizing the need to visit individual computer systems, and proactively alerting the IT manager to potential problems before they occur. ITA also benefits businesses that may not have a large, full-time systems management staff to watch over their networks, as it provides easy-to-use health monitoring, asset reporting, and consolidated tool launch functions.

Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) It can be launched as a stand alone application or from the central console, the OpenManage ITA.

Dell OMSA is a highly secure tool for managing individual Dell servers from virtually anywhere at any time. It is part of Dells OpenManage product set for simple, automated management of Dell systems that can help maximize the value of IT infrastructure. OMSA has an extensive list of management capabilities that are designed to enhance IT manager productivity, alleviate security concerns and ease integration into existing management frameworks. Below are a few examples: With support for industry-standard protocols including WBEM, CIM, and SNMP, OMSA helps simplify the integration of Dell PowerEdge servers into a customer management network. It provides a customized installation mechanism to better meet the customers needs. Customers can use the browser or CLI to facilitate updates to Dell software including BIOS, RAID, firmware and device drivers. By providing SSL encryption and OS-based authentication, OMSA helps protect the server from unauthorized access to server resources, and helps simplify management of the user IDs and passwords. Powerful online diagnostics and asset reporting capabilities allow users to take more proactive control over the server.

Benefit Serviceability

Tool-less Chassis Active ID

The tool-less chassis allows quick access to internal system components, which helps to make it easy to service and maintain. The new bezel displays the Active ID backlit in blue when the server is functioning properly. If the system encounters certain types of failures or management thresholds have been met, an amber caution light will blink indicating a problem. Once the bezel is removed, LEDs will indicate where the problem has occurred (power supply, fan, etc.), and alerts will also be generated via the OMSA tool. This feature enables administrators to quickly identify a server with a problem in a rack full of servers. The system contains an LED on the back of the server that mimics the functionality of the LED on the bezel. Additionally, the LED functions as a system locator from a service perspective. Simply press a button on the front of the chassis or generate a command via OMSA and the LED will blink allowing system administrators to easily identify a system in a rack full of servers or other IT equipment. Once the system is identified, push a button and the light will stop blinking.
