Negotiations came down to the
wire, but, in the end, Seneca High
School graduate Kevin Comer de-
cided to sign with the Toronto
Blue Jays. Comer will receive
$1.65 million and money to cover
college costs if he decides to at-
tend college in the future. Comer
did have a full scholarship to Van-
derbilt University, where he want-
ed to study human organizational
development.
There was a lot of negotia-
tions, Comer said. It really
came down to what they were of-
fering and if it was enough to pull
me away from school. I wanted to
play baseball either way.
Final negotiations came down
to the wire on Monday, Aug. 15,
with Comer signing with just 10
minutes left till the midnight
deadline. Comer, who now has an
agent, and his father, Ernie, nego-
tiated the deal.
Sunday was the first day since
draft day that they threw out a
first real number, Comer said.
On Monday, the last day, negotia-
tions got heated and there was
some real talking. There were a
lot of back and forth phone calls.
We parted ways a few times with
him saying Good luck in college
and then calling back a few hours
later. I signed within 10 minutes
of the deadline.
Comer is not sure of how the
timeline for the contract will
work, but on Aug. 19, he headed
down to Clearwater, Fla. to start
rookie ball.
There is a real timeline that is
set for me to work with, Comer
said. I will probably do one year
of rookie ball because I missed so
much of practice.
If Comer decides to return to
college, he will receive $29,500 per
semester to cover college costs.
He will receive his $1.65 million
bonus in two payments.
Comer has played baseball
since he was 6 years old.
He is 6 foot, 3 inches tall, and
weighs 205 pounds. He is a right-
handed pitcher whose pitch
clocks in around 90 to 94 mph.
Comer has a true passion for
baseball and is very excited about
playing for the Toronto Blue Jays.
I am super excited, Comer
said. I am a little nervous, be-
cause this will be completely dif-
ferent, but Im very excited.

About 20 years ago, this article
never would have existed, but
today its a necessity.
School is just around the cor-
ner, and students and parents
alike will be flocking to different
school district websites to see
their class lists, download per-
mission forms, physical forms,

For parents of high school stu-
dents, the Seneca High School
website can be accessed directly
from the Lenape Regional High
School district site at
www.lrhsd.org.
Seneca High School has an in-

the high school site.
The K-8 district website wel-
comes visitors with a updated
news feed detailing changes in
the district or information that
parents and students need to get
on a quick basis.
Forms and documents for
things such as physicals are
available for download on the

New Jersey Secretary of Agri-
culture Douglas H. Fisher recent-
ly kicked off Farmers Market
Week in New Jersey at the Sea-
side Park Farmers Market by call-
ing on Garden State residents and
visitors to stop in at a community
farmers market and buy Jersey
Fresh agricultural products.
Farmers markets bring the
farm to a communitys doorstep,
giving people access to just-
picked, high quality, nutritious
produce grown by our states
farmers, Fisher said. From
local residents to visitors vaca-
tioning at the shore, the Seaside
Park Farmers Market provides a
fun day out, shopping for Jersey
Fresh produce, locally-grown
plants, and a variety of other spe-
cialty items.
There are 147 community
farmers markets in the state, 12 of
which are new this year. Farmers
who attend these markets sell pro-
duce theyve picked at the peak of
ripeness within 24 hours of sale
to ensure the best taste and high-
est quality.
Many of the farmers accept
WIC and Senior Farmers Market
Nutrition Program vouchers. The
United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA) programs ad-
ministered by the state Depart-
ment of Health and Senior Serv-
ices allot $20 in checks to qualify-
ing individuals, which are valid
through Nov. 30. In addition,
those in the Supplemental Nutri-
tion Assistance Program (SNAP)
may use their electronic benefits
cards to buy produce at farmers
markets in 11 counties. Both pro-
grams are accepted at the Seaside
Farmers markets
celebrated in N.J.

Located in downtown Mount
Holly, the prison was designed by
renowned architect Robert Mills

Featuring vaulted ceilings of
poured concrete and brick and
stone construction, it was the old-
est continually-used prison in the
United States at the time of its
closing in 1965.Today, the prison
is considered a fine example of
innovative planning and the
growing notion of social respon-
sibility to rehabilitate criminals.
Visitors to the museum will see
numerous artifacts and exhibits
on display.
The prison museum is open for
self-guided tours Thursdays
through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4
p.m., and Sundays, noon to 4 p.m.
Admission is $4 for adults and $2

Take a tour of the Historic
Burlington County Prison Museum
Park Farmers Market.
Right here in New Jersey,
USDA provides almost $2.5 mil-
lion statewide for these wonderful
programs that offer WIC moms
and their children and seniors
the opportunity to use their nutri-
tion assistance benefits to pur-
chase fresh fruits and vegetables
at markets like this one, Patricia
Dombroski, USDA Food and Nu-
trition Service Mid-Atlantic re-
gional administrator, said. Plus,
these programs also benefit local
farmers by bringing additional
customers to the markets.
Fisher presented the market
with a proclamation from Gov.
Christie, designating the week of
Aug. 7 to 13 as Farmers Market
Week in the state to encourage all
citizens to visit farmers markets
wherever they live or work and
reap the benefits of Jersey Fresh
fruits and vegetables. Likewise,
Dombroski presented a proclama-
tion for National Farmers Market
Week. Many state, county and
local officials were on hand for
the ceremony.
Eating Jersey Fresh fruits, veg-
etables and other agricultural
products can go a long way to im-
prove overall health. Eating local-
ly also is a good choice for protect-
ing our environment by reducing
the miles a meal travels between
farm and fork, lessening fuel con-
sumption.
In addition, choosing locally-
grown products helps keep New
Jersey farmers on their land, pre-
serving the Garden States quali-
ty of life.
Jersey Fresh produce is at the
peak of the season with a wide
variety of fruits and vegetables
available, including sweet corn,
tomatoes, peaches, nectarines,
squash, peppers, eggplant, basil,
melons, beets, cabbage, collards,
Swiss chard, arugula, kale, leeks,
cilantro, parsley, dill, mint,
turnips and white potatoes.

W
e arent anywhere close to
being sold on a second term
for Barack Obama.
We arent even close to being excited
about any of the current GOP wanna-
bes.
Chris Christie says he doesn't want
to run for president.
Hence, we were candidate-less.
Until now.
We hereby endorse Philadelphia
Mayor Michael Nutter for president
for one simple reason: The man tells it
like it is, which is way, way more than
what we are getting from any other
politician.
A week or so ago, Nutter threw po-
litical correctness out the window. Ac-
cording to recent reports, he spoke
with passion, honesty and sincerity.
And that's more than we get from most
politicians, who are worried only
about securing votes and pandering to
their political bases.
Nutter channeled Bill Cosby when
he talked about personal responsibili-
ty and addressing some of todays is-
sues. It wasn't the usual political fluff
we hear from officeholders. He didn't
blame society or unknown, unseen,
unavoidable forces of nature.
No, he said that parents need to be
responsible for raising their kids.
Now, it's sad that saying something
so obvious, so simple, so logical gar-
ners this much attention. It's sad be-
cause we've come to expect so little out
of our elected leaders. We've come to
expect excuses, lies and cowardice.
We're so conditioned to watching sup-
posed "leaders" dodge and duck basic
questions that, when someone just
says what's on his mind and steps up
to seriously address an issue, we're
blown away.
So, Mr. Mayor, how about it? Toss
your hat into the ring. If you get Cos to
run as your VP, you're in.

Finally, a politician with sense
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter should run for the nations top job
And your pick?
Do any of the presidential hopefuls
get you excited to run to the polls

Congratulations, Kevin Comer: Hes a Jay
Seneca High School grad
chooses Blue Jays over Vandy
Kevin Comer is going straight from high
school to professional baseball, without
stopping for college along the way.
But he might go back later.
After verbally committing to attend Van-
derbilt University on a baseball scholar-
ship, the powerhouse pitcher from Seneca
High School in Tabernacle chose instead to
accept the offer from the Toronto Blue
Jays.
The Jays had chosen him all the way
back on June 6 the 57th overall pick in the
draft and Comer apparently has been
weighing his options from that day until
late Monday night...
...Yeah, a college education is important.
But they offered him $1.65 million. What
would you have done when you were 18?

Police uncover alleged burglar
by hearing him snore
Police in South Brunswick say they
caught a burglar napping loudly.
Officers who had arrested two suspects
at a commercial break-in were searching
the site afterward when they heard snor-
ing from over a large refrigeration unit in
the basement.
Police say they pulled out Israel Cortes,
35, of Ewing, whose brother Christian
Cortes of Pemberton had already been ar-
rested in the same burglary, according to
MSNBC.com.
A couple of hours earlier, an officer had
noticed cars parked behind the former Big
Eds restaurant on Route 130. After police
entered the basement, three suspects fled.
Christian Cortes was arrested right out-
side the building. Another suspect,
Richard Wilson, 39, of Ewing, was arrested
near the Travelers Inn Motel about an
hour later.

horror flick Deer Crossing
Swerving to avoid a deer can lead to un-
foreseen consequences.
Thats the jumping-off point for local in-
dependent film-in-the-making Deer Cross-
ing, which horror movie fans are already
buzzing about.
It starts with Maggy Chancelor (played
by Laura Lynn Cottrel) who has a 6-year-
old son. They are on their way to visit fami-
ly in the Poconos, get detoured, swerve to
avoid a deer and crash. They are abducted
and held hostage for eight years. The son
escapes and tells a detective of the horrors
he and his mother suffered during that
time.
The director is Christian Grillo and the
director of photography is Scott Kaufman.
Cameraman Amel Figueroa has lived in
South Jersey most of his life. He and his

The Tabernacle Sun
School is right around the cor-
ner, and many school districts are
laying out goals and getting the
district in order before the school
year begins.
In Tabernacle Township, they
are looking forward to a new year
and new things happening within
the district.
At the Aug. 15 board of educa-
tion meeting, the Tabernacle su-
perintendent and board of educa-
tion laid out a set of goals for the
district for this year.
The school districts goals are
to create a framework of existing
and potential assessment instru-
ments, not just NJ ASK, which
are valid and reliable, in order to
track meaningful student
achievement, academic growth,
and overall educational progress
and to develop a high-quality, re-
search-based framework for eval-
uating teacher practice within
the Tabernacle Township
schools, Superintendent George
Rafferty said.
The boards goals are, within
a two-year period, to achieve the
Carole E. Larsen Master Board
Certification, through New Jer-
sey School Boards Association,
and implement and facilitate a
comprehensive drug and alcohol
prevention initiative and anti-bul-
lying campaign that is in line
with federal and state laws and
guidelines, Rafferty said.
In other meeting news:
The board discussed the possi-
bility of acquiring a property
that is for sale in the township
and located on Carranza Road
near the back fields of the school.
The property is about one acre
and is listed at $295,000.
Some members of the board
have suggested that the property
could be used for the solar panel
project, but it was said that it is
too early in the process to know if
that is feasible.
It could be included in the
funding for the solar project,
board member Stephen Pickholtz
said.
However, some members on the
board expressed concern over the
price of the property.
The only thing is the cost,
Douglas Hess, board president,
said. The only way to do this is if
we could finance it through fund-
ing somehow. Its just about the
money. Wed have to see what the
need of the owners was to sell. I
think there is enough interest to
explore.
This type of opportunity does-
nt come up often, board member
Stephen Price said. I would hate
three or four years from now, we
need it and it's not there. The
solar panel (project) is premature,
but it would be great to link it to
that and have it pay for itself.
Another suggestion for the
property was to provide addition-
al parking to the crowded school
parking lots.
The school district is also look-
ing into a possible shared service
agreement for transportation
with Burlington County Educa-
tional Services (the Burlington
County Special Services School
District) at no cost to the district.
The service would be used by
the school district if regular
transportation were not available
to pick the student up from Taber-
nacle and bring them to Burling-
ton County Educational Services.
Tabernacle School District would
be able to call Burlington County
Educational Services and have
one of their buses, if in the area,
pick the child up on the way.
The cost of the ride would be
split between the districts de-
pending on how many children
were on the bus, instead of Taber-
nacle having to find and pay a
substitute.
