Courses for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities Autumn 2011

Supported Learning Programme


Were working with a number of partners to bring adults with learning difficulties or disabilities a range of learning options from September 2011. There are adult education programmes that lead to a qualification, informal learning with Community Sparks and an opportunities to get involved in sports activities through the Yorkability team.

Who is the course for?

This course is for those with entry level literacy skills. We also have a Thursday morning class and we will be assessing learners' levels to check which course is right for them.

Who is the course for?

This course is for those with entry level literacy skills. It is suitable for those who have already attended a literacy class. We also have a Wednesday afternoon class and we will be assessing learners' levels to check which course is right for them.

Course details

Learn maths skills for everyday life - using a bank, shopping wisely, money skills and other maths skills - basic sums, using a calculator and other maths skills. This course is for people who are interested in learning more about money, numbers and shapes. You do not need to be good at maths but you need to be keen to learn some new skills. Maths qualification at appropriate level

Learn about healthy eating, having a balanced diet and work together to make some tasty food and healthy dishes.

Who is it for?

This course is for anyone who wants to become more independent, eat healthily, kept fit and improve their personal and social skills.

Are you interested in preparing for the world of work?


Whether youd like to aim for paid or unpaid work, we have some courses which can help to prepare you.

City and Guilds Award in Employability and Personal Development. City and Guilds Award in Employability and Personal Development. You can work towards this qualification and gain cafe experience at the same time at MY Eco Cafe at Clifton Moor. You may prefer to explore other types of employment. Why not get in touch to discuss your options.

NOCN Course in Customer Service Skills A 12 week course that looks at the skills and attitudes needed when working with the pubic.

Support Needs
Some people are able to attend these courses without any learning support, and others need some support. We can provide a learning support worker for you if needed, or you can bring your own support if you prefer, or if you need help with personal care. If you attend these courses, you need to be able to take part in the activities so that you can achieve a certificate at the end of the course. To make sure that the course is right for you, please check with Angela on 07833 402845 or come along to one of our enrolment events. If you think you might like to try one of the Adult and Community Education classes advertised in the Learning 4 Life brochure but feel you might need support to attend, please let us know.

English and maths are FREE for everyone. There may be a course fee for some people on other courses or activities, so please get in touch to find out more and ask any questions about our courses.

Other activities for adults with learning disabilities at the Melbourne Centre
New!! SportAbility Starting Thursday 15th September and running every Thursday 1-3pm. SportAbility Multi Sports Session at The Melbourne Centre, Escrick St, Fishergate, York. Multi-Sports activities such as Boccia and New Age Kurling along with Wii sports games for adults with learning disabilities.

New!! DanceAbility sessions starting in September at The Melbourne Centre, Escrick Street, Fishergate, York. DanceAbility is a dance method accessible to all people. Classes focus on improvisation and creative movement to the latest cool tunes!

Social Skills training for people with Autism/Aspergers Syndrome


At Millers Yard on Gillygate, York Mondays 1-4pm The course is run by Specialist Autism Services and is an ongoing course with a welcoming and supportive atmosphere to help you get the most out of your sessions.
