An Interview with The Budd Lake Fire Company

By Cheryl Conway xtensive training helps wash out the fear of fighting fires, according to several volunteer firefighters of the Budd Lake Volunteer Fire Company #1. Understanding how fire moves, being able to read it and being careful are key safety methods to firefighting, volunteers say. Fifty men from Budd Lake currently volunteer their time 24/7 with the local fire department to protect the lives of 16,000 residents in a 23-square mile radius, as well as provide mutual aid to nearby fire companies. Thinking about entering a burning building and rescuing victims can raise certain anxieties. But being prepared and well trained lessens those feelings. We train very hard, says

Peter Hurley, 54, volunteer firefighter in Budd Lake for the past 20 years. Finding it, reading it and being very careful- safety is the key. You try to work with the younger guys; thats how they are

going to learn. Our motto is everyone goes home, bottom line. William Cirone, 56, who has volunteered with the local department for the past 37 years, says, You should

only be afraid of the unknown. Fire is very visual. How is it moving, where is it moving? Its all part of the training. The Budd Lake Fire continued on page 4

Mt. Olive Public Library Plans Various Programs To Memorialize 10 Year Anniversary of Sept. 11th

By Cheryl Conway ommunity members of all ages are invited to memorialize the ten year anniversary since the September 11 tragedy with various programs planned at the Mt. Olive Public Library next month. The series is sponsored in partnership by the MOPL, the Givaudan Community Advisory Panel, Veolia Environmental

Services and Hackettstown Regional Medical Center. Programs will be held from Wed., Aug. 31 through Sunday, Sept. 11. The first year for a 9/11 program held at MOPL, organizers say that the 10 year anniversary is a good time to memorialize the events that occurred and honor victims and their loved ones. We want to show our thanks and

respect to those who put their lives on the line and those who lost their lives, says Scott Davan, MOPL director. We are very proud to put on series of programs like this. The series will begin on Wed., Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. with: Performing Tribute 9/11: Ordinary People, Remarkable Stories. Performing Tribute weaves together the perspectives of six individuals who were separately yet directly impacted by the events of 9/11 family members who lost loved ones; survivors who lived through the bombing of the WTC in 1993 and the attacks on September 11, 2001; an evacuated resident who lived on Liberty Street; FDNY firefighters who responded on September 11; and a NJ resident who volunteered with the Salvation Army during the recovery. Performing Tribute is performed by the actual people whose lives were impacted by 9/11. On Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 6 p.m., Joey Rizzolo Freedom Walk Kids of America will present and discuss his historic freedom walks. In Jan. 2007, Rizzolo- a high school student- initiated a Freedom Walk in Paramus to remember lives lost on 9/11 and

to honor his local first responders and veterans, past and present. Since then, Rizzola continues his annual freedom walk every September and honors those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. This program is intended for young adults in 9th-12th grade. On Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., Officer Russ Hatzel of the Mt. Olive Police Department Emergency Preparedness. On Friday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. 102 Minutes That Changed America History Channel Documentary. On Sept. 11, 2001, 102 minutes passed between the first plane's impact into One World Trade Center, the second plane's attack on Two World Trade Center, and the eventual collapse of both buildings. In that time, people around New York experienced a range of emotions. Despite the horror and the incomprehensibility of what was happening, many knew, somehow, that they had a unique responsibility to record what they saw. They reached for their cameras. This unprecedented, special documentary joins hundreds of pieces of their footage and audiotape into a single, seamless historical record. It is an intensely personal perspeccontinued on page 12

continued from front page Company is always looking for volunteers, both men and women. Candidates must be 18 years old to be a member or 16 years old to be a junior member. Current volunteers range in age from 18 to 70. All training through the Morris County Fire Academy in Morris Township, and gear is funded through the fire company. Meetings are held every Tuesday, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and vary weekly. Volunteers practice different drills at the meetings such as dealing with live burns or cutting off a roof. The Budd Lake fire company handles about 500 to 600 calls per year, volunteers say. Some volunteers admit that there is misconception by some, especially newcomers in the area, that the firefighters are paid. They are strictly non-paid volunteers. They have no clue we volunteer, says Hurley. They dont realize the time, effort and schooling, dedication that the volunteers put forth. Hurley admits that he went to college for police or fire service with hopes to have a paid job as a fireman some day. But after taking civil tests for a paid job in Newark or Paterson- larger cities that do have paid firemen- he realized that the competition and the number of applicants was more than what he expected. It was very tough, admits Hurley. They may take only take five guys out of 500 applicants. Since 1975, Hurley decided to volunteer as a non-paid firefighter and has helped Florham Park and Parsippany District 6 fire departments before joining the Budd Lake fire company. As a vice president of sales at Standard Group in Cedar Knolls, Hurley still finds the time to volunteer. I just enjoy the camaraderie with the guys, training, loving the fire.you have to really enjoy it and be dedicated. Its a lot of time. Its a lot of work. You are going to see things you are not prepared for. Hurley says he has dealt with a dozen fatal fires and car accidents. It a dedication, camaraderie, continues Hurley. There are some good times and we all work together. Many of the members have joined because they were interested in volunteering their time as a way to give back to the community. They also signed up because of the camaraderie. Brad Evans, fire chief, joined in 1999 right after moving to Budd Lake. A food commodity broker with his familys business- Evans Brokerage Company of Budd Lake- Evans says I always wanted to be a fireman. You are always doing something good for the community- you help a lot of people. Evans desire stems back from when he was a child and his home caught on fire. I remember my mom waking me up at 10 p.m. and there was a red ball of fire, he recalls of when he was about seven years old. They saved the house, says Evans, 46. I was so impressed with how much they saved and how little water it was. Evan says the cause of the fire was from spontaneous combustion from a rag that his mother was using to refurbish furniture. Evans admits that a firemans job- its a lot of hard work. We are all part of everything. When pages go off, we go. There have been many dinners that have been left. Evans recalls leaving during Christmas dinner when his pager went off, and another time when he left his wife on the chiropractors table. The families of volunteer firefighters, they have to be good people, your wife, your kids, says Hurley. They have to be understanding when that pager goes off. Hurley recalls

meeting his wifes family for the first time, when she cooked a big dinner, and his pager went off. You are never like hanging out when you get a call, says Cirone, animal control officer in Mt. Olive. Its a 100 percent commitment. When the pager goes off, you go. Cirone admits that I never wanted to be a fireman. I grew up in the city. We hung out at the firehouse and played ball with the firemen. But when he moved to Budd Lake in 1974, he joined the first aid squad and then the fire company and really liked it. I knew I wanted to serve the community. You are helping people not only who you know, but strangers. Cirone says that everyone who lives in a community should try to volunteer in some way. I would not make a good baseball coach. I would not make a good basketball continued on page 6

Firefighters from Flanders, N.J. rescue a driver trapped by flooding caused to heavy rains on August 15, 2011. Submitted photo. Submitted by Doug Fenichel irefighters swung into action Monday afternoon, August 15, as heavy rainfall created flooding across Mount Olive Township. As pictured in the photo, Flanders firefighters moved into high water to rescue a man who had been trapped in his sedan. The driver was alone in his vehicle and made it into the fire department vehicle and was taken to dry ground. A wrecker came for the vehicle, which had water damage. Police and firefighters in Mount Olive saw this scene repeated across town during the storm.

continued from page 4 coach, but others do. If everybody does that they are doing something good for their community. Being a volunteer firefighter in Budd Lake, it truly is like a second family, Cirone continues. Ive made some really good friends with the fire department. Its like a big fraternity, agrees Evans and Hurley. Its a brotherhood. As a volunteer, firefighters in Budd Lake do more than firefighting, even on the scene. There is always something to do at a fire scene, says Hurley, like help pull hose. The firefighting part is a very small piece of the pie, says Cirone. Other responsibilities include cleaning the firehouse, maintaining trucks, outdoor weeding. And like a brotherhood, firefighters have social events like lunches out and trips to museums, Harrisburg, Pa, and flea markets. They also provide education to the public, especially during fire prevention week with the schools. On Saturday, Oct. 15, at noon, the Budd Lake fire company will have an open house for the community with demonstrations like live fires, car cutting, call 911 drills and display of equipment. Dating back about 80 years, the first discussion to establish a fire department in Budd Lake was in 1929. Edward Brown acquired a Model T Ford and with the help of Ray E. DeGraw fashioned it into the first fire truck of the Budd Lake Fire Department. The fire department held its meetings in the basement of Mockler's Tavern on Route 46. Soon after, a Baby Grand Chevrolet was purchased to be used as a chemical truck and housed in a rented garage behind Mockler's Tavern. A pot-belly stove was used in the winter to heat the garage in order to prevent the chemicals from freezing. On July 7, 1931, the Fire Department was reorganized and officers were elected. On May 8, 1933, the Township Committee passed an ordinance setting up the Mt. Olive Township Fire Departments, which consisted of the Budd Lake Vol. Fire Dept. Co. #1 and Flanders Fire Department. In 1934, the fire department received permission to move into the old municipal building provided that the fire department pays all expenses. The police department and post office were also housed in the municipal building. Over the years the fire department held fund drives, card parties, games and dances at Budds Pavilion in order to raise money to meet expenses. In 1935, the Township Committee bought the fire department its first pumper, a 1935 Ford, and in 1946 a second fire truck. Construction on the existing firehouse on Route 46 was completed in 1968, housing all the equipment and a large meeting room for activities for fundraising and dances. In 1972, an addition to the firehouse was completed, which consisted of a lounge for the firefighters to use after meetings, drills and fires. This construction on the firehouse was mostly performed by the firefighters themselves. In 1987, the firefighters added on to the firehouse- two more engine bays, a Radio Room, Chiefs Office, engineers work room, a storage room and a conference room and a larger lounge. The two new bays added enough space to house one piece of apparatus per bay. Through a federal grant issued three years ago, the fire company made improvements to the outside of its firehouse with a new roof, windows and siding. Today, the fire department possesses three Class A pumpers, one ladder truck, a Tender, small rescue truck and utility van. It is looking into purchasing a new ladder truck to replace the 31-year old one. To get involved with the Budd Lake Fire company, email Chief Evans at www.Buddlakefire.org.

Montclair had an overall record of 13-6 and they were 8-0 in the Skyline Conference. They won the Skyline Conference Tournament title with a victory over Ramapo in the finals. Montclair advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament where they were defeated by Franklin and Marshall. Lets take a look back at how other student-athletes from Mount Olive High School fared in spring collegiate sports. Keep in mind that these young men and women listed go to college in New Jersey. Andrew Kraemer set a school record of 132-feet seven-inches in the discus throw during the 2011 spring mens outdoor track and field season for the Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken). The throw occurred at the Lions Invitational hosted by The College of New Jersey in Ewing. Kraemer first set a new Stevens record in the discus with a throw of 129-9 earlier in the season.

Thomas Portesy was a freshman pitcher this spring for the Ramapo College (Mahwah) baseball program. Portesy made four appearances on the mound for the Roadrunners and had a 3.38 earned run average. Ramapo had a season mark of 30-14 and they were 13-3 at home. Manos, a junior, had the lowest season average this past season for the Cyclones (81.6). He had a low round of 76 on the season. Criscuolo, a sophomore, had the third lowest average for Centenary through the season (82.8) and had a low round of 79 (twice). As a junior midfielder for the Centenary College mens lacrosse team last season, Sean Stanton played in nine games. The Cyclones had an overall record of 6-7 and they were 34 at home.

From The Mayors Desk

Dear Resident, As many of you may already be aware, I am not running for reelection in November and this letter is my last message to you. Accordingly, Id like to use this opportunity to review the townships financial status with you. Township Budget: Since becoming your mayor in 2006, we have been focused on controlling municipal taxes in a variety of ways, including cutting expenses, generating additional revenue and exploring numerous shared service possibilities. Cutting expenses: Despite rising costs for fuels, medical benefits and salaries, we have held the line on expenses by reducing departmental operating budgets almost every year. The net increase in the township budget from 2006 to 2011 is under 8% which amounts to less than 2% per year. We have also reduced staff through both attrition and, painfully, through permanent layoffs. The total reduction in staff for the 2006 to 2011 is 24 people, or about 13% less. Generating additional revenue: We have over the years increased the number of leases with communications providers for placement of antennas on township property or structures, We are currently advertising for prospective solar farm proposals for the 100 acre Combe Fill North landfill, and We continue to explore any and all possibilities for grants to accomplish open space acquisitions, capital projects and capital purchases. Exploring additional Shared Services: Since last year alone, we have finalized several shared services in addition to the ones we already have. They are: Health Department services for Wharton, Health Department services for Dover, Animal Control services for Byron, Fire Marshall services for Chester Boro and Court service for Netcong. Please be assured that for the remainder of my term as your mayor, we will continue to look for ways to save wherever we can. It has been my pleasure to serve you as your mayor. Best Wishes, David M. Scapicchio

Local Coach Advances Team at D1 Nationals

local basketball coach of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) goes far this summer to compete at the highest level at Division I National Championship. Coach Todd Conway of Flanders, founder of the NWJ Blaze AAU boys basketball program, drove 19 hours to Little Rock, AR, in early July to compete in the AAU 15: U Division I National Championship, and two weeks later drove 17 hours to Florida to coach his 16: Us at ESPN Disneys Wide World of Sports also for a D1 National championship. Besides the distance, Conways U:16 team a first year team- went far in its competition by placing 2nd in its pool and advancing to the D1 national championship bracket. I was shockingly surprised, says Conway, with both teams accomplishing their goals as the 15s advanced in D1 bracket play and the 16s went to the national championship bracket of D1. We were a first year team going D1. Conway, who just formed his U16 team in 2010, admits that he was nervous about competing at the highest level with a first year team who had never competed at nationals before. The tournament was held in Lake Buena Vista, Fl, from July 24-30.

I was extremely nervous, explains Conway. When my 15s went their first year to D1, back in 2008, we lost every game and didnt make it out of our pool play. Teams can fall apart; when you can lose by an average of 36 points per game, I knew what I needed to do. I needed to rebuild. I knew what to expect going in to the 16s this year. After taking 2nd in their pool with a record of two wins and one loss, NWJ Blaze U:16 advanced to the national championship bracket but lost to Team Orlando, which moved them to the consolation bracket, in which they won the first game against Maine, but then lost to Florida Elite in the 2nd round. Receiving a D1 bid to AAU nationals is an accomplishment of its own. To receive a bid, teams are required to finish first or second in pool play of a state tournament or finish in the semi-finals or finals of a super regional, explains Conway. The other challenge is the funding and motivation to travel to distant tournaments two obstacles that defer teams from attending nationals. At the U:16 D1 national championship tournament this year, 125 teams competed, four of which were from NJ. Out of those four NJ teams, only two advanced to the

played at the D1 level this year at AAU nationals held at Little Rock AR, from July 4-9. After taking 4th in its pool, the U:15 team was placed in the classic championship bracket; won in the 1st round against an continued on page 14

continued from page 3 tive of the tragedy, communicating for the first time that morning's events, as they were experienced by people around NY. It is an evocative, authentic and reverential memorial to one of the most cataclysmic events in world history. On Sat., Sept. 10, at 10:30 a.m.- MOPD officer Russ Hatzel Emergency Preparedness for Children. Sat., Sept. 10, at 1 p.m.- Remembering the Twin Towers Angus Gillespie, Ph.D. Based on his best-selling book Twin Towers, 1973-2001: The Life and Death of New York Citys World Trade Center , Gillespie explains the political maneuvering that was necessary for the co-sponsor, the State of NJ, to agree to situate the project across the river in NY. Today, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center stand as a memory, an image that calls to mind sorrow and loss. But during the years that they straddled the skyline, they were more than just office buildings. They were symbols of America. What went on before ground was even broken is a fascinating story in itself. Presenting portraits of the engineers, architects, politicians, and contractors who proudly and ambitiously dreamt, designed, and built the World Trade Center, Gillespie tells the story of how engineers prepared the site and solved complex problems in order to erect the towers, each with 110 stories. And he discusses the contrast between the architectural communitys almost universal disdain and the publics enthusiastic acceptance of the building as a symbol of NY. Finally, he tells the story of the heartbreaking demise of the building on Sept. 11, 2001, followed by an account of the efforts to remove the rubble and to construct an appropriate memorial within a new complex. What emerges is not only a tribute to a building, but an inspiring and intimate story of the birth and death of an American symbol. On Sunday, Sept. 11, from 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Attacks on 9/11 Image Exhibition. Images taken by William Cirone, Mt. Olive Animal Control Officer and volunteer firefighter, of the 9/11 attack and the subsequent rescue efforts, will be on display and under discussion during the month of September at the MOPL in honor of the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. A responder to the attacks of Sept. 11, Cirone had a unique opportunity to capture the heart wrenching events that unfolded. continued from page 10 Alabama team to advance in D1 bracket play. We had BABC (Boston Amateur Basketball Club)-which wound up being the Division 1 U:15 National Champions- in our pool, says Conway. Despite the fact that his teams did not win the overall championship, Conway was pleased that his teams competed, especially at the highest level- D1. He recommends the experience to any team or player with big aspirations of playing college or professional ball. Play D1, says Conway, for the exposure, for that is where the college coaches scout most of the D1 games. The top players in the country are getting scouted. The opportunity of being seen by these Division 1 coaches who are there scouting the best players in the country can be your opportunity to be noticed and then hopefully you can exchange a sport for a free education. The first coach that I saw and shook hands with was Brad Stevens, head coach of Butler University. Scouts were from all over such as Delaware, North Carolina State, Ohio State University, Syracuse and Virginia Commonwealth (VCU). During the first round of national championship bracket play, the assistant coach of Syracuse University approached Conways bench during warmups, asked for my roster, my top players and advised that hed be scouting the NWJ Blaze. Another highlight during the tournament was shaking hands and meeting Bobby Hurley, former Duke player and current assistant coach for Wagner College. Coaching basketball for 11 years, at all levels from JCC, recreation, travel, high school and AAU, Conway hopes to lead a college basketball team some day. It is my absolute passion, says Conway. I watch it year round; I attend ACC tournaments. It is my complete job to be around basketball and coaching basketball. There is the feeling of success as you work toward a goal and you accomplish that goal. Its the knowledge of the game- when someone gets something easy and they get it, they enjoy it. Its their love for the game. Its the one thing that makes me happy even during the bad times of losing, he continues. Even when I lose Im just so happy because I love the sport and coaching, of transferring the knowledge of the game to the young minds that want to learn. Conways advice to aspiring athletes is play recreation, travel, CYO or JCC, high school and AAUand get to D1 nationals. When Conway got home from his second nationals last month, he received a phone call and follow-up letter from a D1 college with an invitation to visit the school with one of his players. That is successproving that the system really works, he concludes. The NWJ Blaze was founded by Conway in 2007. With 13 players on his U:15 team and 11 on his U:16 team, Conway brings in the best talent from various towns such as Mt. Olive, Rockaway, Boonton, Morris Plains, East Orange, North Warren, Hillsdale, Mine Hill, Long Valley, Highland Lakes and Easton, Pa.

New Principal To Take School into the 21st Century

By Elsie Walker t. Michaels School in Netcong is moving into 21st century education, and leading it there is its new principal, Ernie Jackson. Jackson is a military veteran who holds several degrees and is currently working on his doctoral dissertation in 21st Century Education at North Central University. Jackson noted that education is like a house. It needs a good foundation or it will crumble. Looking at the students in St. Michaels School, who are pre K (age 3) to 8th grade, Jackson noted that, when the kids have graduated [high school] they will be competing globally for jobs. He wants to make sure that St. Michaels students have the educational foundation they need to succeed in this world. Some may wonder how a retired Lieutenant Colonel became an elementary school principal. Jackson said, I see there is a lot of parallel between the military and school. Jackson originally studied elementary education at Bloomsberg University in Pennsylvania and was an all-conference offensive tackle and a wrestler. His goal was to become a professional football player. He went through the trials

St. Michael's School's new principal Ernie Jackson with his wife Debbie and daughter Ashley at Ashley's graduation. and missed the cut by 1/10 of a second. Suddenly needing a new career plan, Jackson considered going into elementary education, but saw a sign about joining the Army. The pay was better; there was the opportunity to travel and to serve his country. Initially, he signed up for three years, but ended up retiring from the military 20 years later. It was with his first unit that Jackson saw that his educational background would be useful in many ways in the service. It was the end of the Viet Nam era. The volunteer army took in people of various backgrounds and Jackson discovered that half of his platoon couldnt read or write. Jackson took on the role of teacher and found that his elementary education degree served him well. Helping, serving others is important to Jackson. He believes in servant leadership. I loved serving our country, he said. Another thing he loves is watching children learn. In particular, he loves it when he sees a child thats been struggling, suddenly get the concept and the continued on page 20

Great Clips Opens in Chester

By Cheryl Conway eing a mother is one thing, but an owner of a hair cutting salon is a profession that Manisha Mirchandani would have never imagined. Mirchandani of Jefferson had been happily producing television commercials for 16 years, but two weeks prior to having her first child and going on maternity leave, she was laid off from her job. Although disappointed by the news, Mirchandani decided to take a different career path once her baby turned three months old. She looked into franchising and after careful review and study decided to set up her own business- Great Clips Salon in Chester. A national franchise, with 3,000 salons nationwide, Great Clips Salon offers affordable hair-cuts for the entire family. Open late, as well as on Sundays, Great Clips is a walkin salon completely centered around customer convenience, explains Mirchandani. Mirchandani, along with her husband and co-owner John Consigli, opened the Chester salon- located at the Chester Shoprite Center on Route 206 - this past May with a grand opening and reception with hair-cuts offered at a special low price of $2.99. Pricing now

for cut and blow dry is at $14 for adults, $12 for children and seniors. Prices are a-la-carte, with shampoo for $4; formal styles such as straightening or curling between $22-$30. The salon focuses exclusively on haircuts and does not offer color or perms. In January, the salon offers a Great Haircut Sale with discounted haircuts. Most just want a haircut to get in and get out, says Mirchandani. Its very affordable to our families. We offer great customer service. Its very family oriented, comfortable and friendly. We offer value and convenience to our customers. With no appointments at Great Clips, sometimes there is a wait time, admits Mirchandani. We really try to focus on kids being comfortable, especially when there is a wait so she has a television in the waiting area playing Nickelodeon as well as an area up front for kids to play. Offering later hours than many other salons, Great Clips in Chester is opened 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays; Saturdays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Sundays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. All stylists are licensed in cosmetology and attend classes to keep up with market trends.

Mt. Olive TNR Makes a Difference for Area Cats

By Elsie Walker ootsie and Night are two cats that are grateful for Mt. Olive TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). Both are up for adoption rather than facing an uncertain future outdoors or facing euthanasia. Mt. Olive TNR helps feral cats in Mt. Olive. It was founded in early 2009 to get a Trap-Neuter-Return ordinance passed in Mt. Olive and has been doing TNR since August of that year. Michelle Lerner, one of the founder and project coordinators explained the groups mission [Our mission is]to transform Mt. Olive

from a high-kill town for cats to a no-kill town for cats. We are close to achieving this. In 2008, the year before we started, the town impounded 181 cats and killed 141 of them, at a taxpayer cost of over $20,000. In 2010, the year after we started, the town impounded 54 cats and euthanized 4 of them for medical reasons, and the town saved $15,000. Lerner added that there are also fewer complaints about free-roaming cats and fewer kittens being born. People who live in Mt. Olive should contact us if they see feral or stray cats in their

neighborhood, and especially if they are feeding the cats. Our goal is to get every cat in Mt. Olive neutered, said Lerner. The Mt. Olive TRN, made up of area residents, has 20 volunteers giving various amounts of time, with a core group of 8 9 giving the most time. They work with feral cats. Lerner explained that a feral cat is one who has not been socialized by humans and is afraid of them, much as a wild animal would be. However, Lerner will tell you thats not a black and white classification, but more of a spectrum. For instance, there are cats which she refers to as semi-feral who are willing to come within a couple feet of a feet of a person putting out food for them and will let the person touch the top of their heads, but wont let anyone pet or pick them up. Some cats are feral cats because they were born outside and grew up without being touched or handled by a human, while others were born in a home, abandoned to the outdoors at an early age, and lost their socialization. For truly feral adult cats, we trap them and get them neutered and vaccinated and micro-chipped and then return them to where they were trapped with lifelong outdoor care and shelter. But for kittens and for adults who are tame enough to be socialized, we remove them and work with them and adopt them out. We also take some of the Mt. Olive cats from

the impoundment facility at Golub's Animal Hospital when their seven days are up, and we find them homes as well. If an impounded cat is feral, we try to find a barn home for the cat, said Lerner. One of the goals of the organization is to get adoptable cats into good homes. To help in that effort, the organization has adoption days. It holds adoption days on some weekend days at Tractor Supply in Flanders, Pet Goods in Succasunna, and will be holding its first adoption day at Pet Grooming Plus in Chester on Sunday, August 21. Cats and kittens are also available for adoption between adoption days. Those looking for a forever feline companion can visit the Mt. Olive TNR website http://mtolivetnr. myresq.org/ to view pictures of the current cats and kittens available. If interested in one, a person can fill out the contact form on the site and a date will be set-up to see the feline at its foster home. People can also find out about adoption day dates on the site, by emailing the organization at mtolivetnr@gmail.com or by checking it out on Facebook. What are adoption days like? The main purpose of the adoption days is to get cats and kittens adopted! We bring some of our cats and kittens, usually between continued on page 23

continued from page 16 light bulb goes off in the childs head. In coming to St. Michaels, Jackson brings with him a vast education. While in the service, he earned Masters degrees in International Studies from Lockhaven University in Pennsylvania and in Large Unit Leadership from the Army and General Staff College in Fort Levenworth, Kansas. After retirement, he earned a Masters degree in School Administration from SUNY Paltz in New York. He taught fifth grade for five years in Port Jervis and then he was named principal of Chester Academy Middle School in Chester, New York. Now Jackson is at St. Michaels School. He said, St. Michaels has a really great school community. Hes excited about being at the school and noted the forwardthinking education it offers, such as introducing Spanish in pre-K. His plan is to add technology to enhance learning, with projects like robotics and tools like ipads. I believe that Mr. Jackson will serve our school well, especially in the areas of math, technology and science. I look forward to working with him to build on the many wonderful qualities that our school already has, said Father Nicholas Bozza, pastor of the church. Jacksons life outside of teaching includes spending time with his family, his wife Debbie and daughter, Ashley. A student himself, Jackson is also spending his free time working on his dissertation.

dental sealant is a clear, plastic coating that is bonded to the vulnerable chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay most often occurs. These protective sealants cover the tooth surface to "seal out" food and plaque, thus reducing the risk of decay. The probability of developing decay begins early in life, so children and teenagers are obvious candidates for dental sealants during their most cavity-prone years. But that doesn't mean adults at risk for tooth decay can't benefit from sealants as well. At Cohen and Schwartz Dental, sealants can be applied quickly, easily and comfortably without the need for drilling or the removal of tooth structure. The sealant is painted onto the tooth to form a protective shield, and bonds into the pits and grooves of the chewing surfaces, acting as a barrier to protect enamel from harmful plaque. Sealants can last for several years and can

be reapplied as necessary. A Healthy Smile Calls for Good Dental Hygiene Sealants are only one part of preventive dental care and should not replace good oral hygiene. Instead, sealants preserve the teeth, adding additional protection to prevent decay and reducing the likelihood for extensive dental procedures later on. In addition to sealants, a comprehensive dental program should include twice-daily brushing, flossing, fluoride, healthy food choices and regular visits to your dental office. Even if you brush and floss carefully, it can be very difficult- and even impossibleto remove food and bacteria buildup from the tiny crevices on certain teeth, which puts you at risk for tooth decay. Ask us about dental sealants at your next appointment. Combined with good dental hygiene, you can feel more confident that your smile is protected from the harmful plaque that causes cavities.

Yoga and Good Health

How Backbends Healed My Back

By Janice C. Molinari n 1999 at the age of 30, I had emergency surgery to remove a herniated disc from my lower back. As the years rolled by and what remained of that disc wore away I found myself in consistent pain as the bones rubbed up against each other. Id wake up in agony, rainy days brought a dull ache in my spine and bending down even for the simple task of tying my shoe was an uncomfortable experience. Over time, working around this daily pain changed the way I slept, stood and engaged in everyday activities. It created further misalignment in my hips and a curvature in my spine, creating a vicious cycle. Two years ago, on my birthday, I received a tremendous gift when I stepped into my first Anusara Yoga class and stepped onto the path that would eventually heal my back and better my quality of life. This particular style of yoga has completely changed my life and my health. Anusara Yoga, founded by John Friend, focuses on proper alignment, and over time, this has carried into my everyday posture. Ive brought greater awareness to my alignment in the way I sit, stand and walk and better posture has allowed for more space in my vertebrae and overall relief from chronic

pain. (Its also made me look more confident and a few friends have commented on the fact that I look thinnernot bad for an added bonus! Ill take it!) When I began my practice, I never could imagine that I would enjoy backbends as much as I do. What once looked painful and nearly impossible now gives me great joy and feels amazing. Through practicing proper alignment, I find myself getting safely into poses that create space in my spine, increase my bloodflow and allow for greater strength and conditioning. I now wake up every morning entirely pain-free. Ive removed the economy-sized bottle of Advil from my medicine cabinet, and that for me, is nothing short of miraculous. More importantly, when I step onto my mat for practice, the yoga has allowed me to engage with my imperfections. Its a premise called radical acceptance where you dont just acknowledge your injuries, you embrace them wholeheartedly and allow them to inform your practice. When your back is hurting or your hamstrings are shouting at you, instead of blowing through the pain like society teaches us to do, you allow it to shape your practice. You learn better how to nurture yourself and to listen to your injuries. By

listening, it will eventually lead you into proper alignment. When I come off my mat and out into the world, I find myself applying this in my everyday life as well. I take the time to set myself up right and care for my well-being. Im more acutely aware of the areas in life where I blow right by what might serve me best as I live life in the fast lane. And I change the way I engage allowing for a healthier, more nurturing approach. Yoga has changed me for the better in many ways. When I step into the studio and onto my mat, I take pride in respecting myself enough to continually make the time to practice what I enjoy, something that is healthy for me, heals me and enriches my life. Janice C. Molinari is a television producer and owner of Ananda Yoga, an Anusara based studio located in Mendham, NJ. She welcomes questions from anyone looking to improve their health and relieve pain through the practice of yoga. She can be contacted at Janice@ anandayogamendham.com. Mt. Olive TNR...

continued from page 19 five and 10, and set them up in cages on tables at the adoption venue. People can spend time with the cats and kittens, and if they are interested in adopting, we ask them to fill out an adoption application and contract, which is two pages. We talk with them about what they are looking for in a cat or kitten to make sure it is a good match, and we try to do a quick reference check. Adopters can usually take the cat or kitten home the same day. It is a fairly easy and very friendly process. Adoption fees are $90 for a kitten and $55 for an adult, which include spay/neuter, rabies and distemper vaccinations, microchip, FIV/FeLV testing, and deworming. But from August 15-September 15, we are participating in Best Friends' Animal Society's "Back in Black" promotion, where all of our black kittens and cats-including torties[tortoiseshell] and tuxedos-will sport half-price adoption fees, said Lerner. Speaking of black cats and kittens that need homes, Tootsie and Night are ready for adoption. Tootsie is a beautiful young tortoiseshell (tortie). She is one two years old, black with flecks of orange. She came from the impoundment facility and had already been spayed and also declawed. The Mt. Olive TRN thinks that she was surrendered by someone. Tootsie is extremely sweet and outgoing; she wants to be petted by everyone she sees. She is also a bit of a Houdini; she can somehow let herself out of cages. Lerner noted that they have to put extra fasteners on her cage door because Tootsie opens all the regular latches. They have no idea how she does it. All she wants when she gets out, though, is some extra attention. Also available is Night. He is 13 weeks old and Lerner describes him as a total love bug. His foster family calls him The Mighty Night because he plays hard and cuddles hard! His favorite thing is to run around playing and then curl up in someone's lap and go to sleep. He was born outside to a feral cat, but he was young enough that Mt. Olive TNR was able to tame him very easily. His vice is that he is crazy for cheese; his foster family reports that if they have cheese at the dinner table, he begs and mews until they give him some, which he just thinks is the best. The Mt. Olive TNR was there for Tootsie and Night and now they have a chance at a forever home. As the organization continues to help area cats, it can use some help. We really, really need more foster homes. Fostering can be for a few weeks or a few months, depending on what the fosterer is able to do. We especially need foster homes for adult cats right now, since it is kitten season and most adults are getting passed over at adoption days. We need people to help care for the adult cats while they wait out kitten season, until we can get them into permanent adoptive homes, said Lerner. The organization could also use monetary donations and supplies. We need cat food, kitten food, and litter for our foster cats. We also need more cat beds. We also can always use more cages, traps, and carriers. Anyone who can donate supplies should email us at mtolivetnr@gmail.com or call 973-584-5890 and we can work out how to get it to us, or drop it off at an adoption day, Lerner said. Until recently, we were easily able to raise all the funds we needed to do our work. However, a few months ago we had two unexpected emergency vet bills that added up to over $3,000, and we have been struggling ever since to make up for that. We really need more donations to be able to continue our work. Even small donations will help, as they add up, she noted. Checks can be made out to APLNJ (Mt. Olive TNRs parent nonprofit), with "Mt. Olive TNR Project" written in the memo line, and mailed to TNR Project, PO Box 116, Budd Lake NJ 07828.

Rice, cheese and chopped onion can all be put in the freezer and saved for tacos, spaghetti or a skillet dish when youre pressed for time. Have a back-up plan. Even the best-laid plans can go awry, so make sure youve got something you can put together in a flash. It

could be a meal youve prepped and frozen that just needs warming up, or some pasta, jarred sauce and whatever vegetables you have on hand that can be tossed together for a quick Italian feast. Use convenience foods. Save some time and hassle with frozen cut vegetables or bagged salads. Look in the freezer and refrigerator sections of your grocery store to find farm-fresh Bob Evans proteins and sides that help you get a wholesome meal on the table with plenty of time to spare. For more fast family recipes and moneysaving coupons, visit www.bobevans.com. Sausage and Mushroom Calzone Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Makes 4 servings 1 pound Bob Evans Italian Roll Sausage 1 pound loaf frozen bread dough, thawed 1/2 cup pizza sauce 1 jar sliced mushrooms, drained (4 ounces) 1/2 cup grated mozzarella cheese Preheat oven to 350F.

Between the Bread Chefs Secrets to Building the Perfect Sandwich

hef Bobby Flay knows a thing or two about creating flavorful sandwich recipes made with real, simple ingredients. Now hes letting others in on his secrets as he teams up with Hellmanns and Best Foods to help America build the perfect sandwich. Everyone has an opinion about how to make the perfect sandwich, from the musthave ingredients to the highly personal sandwich architecture, said Flay. No matter the sandwich recipe, I always use Hellmanns mayonnaise to bring out the best in my sandwich, plus I have to cut the bread diagonally to make it just right. Thats my idea of a perfect sandwich. Here are some of Flays tips on how he adds his personal touch to sandwiches: Thick, crusty breads like ciabatta are great for sandwiches to help complement softer ingredients like tomatoes and cheese.

Bring a crunch to your sandwich with vegetables like sliced cucumber or fennel. Not only do they add a fresh taste, they wont wilt when they come in contact with condiments. Add bright colors to the sandwich with parsley leaves, finely diced red onions, or green, yellow and red peppers. Dont be afraid to experiment with new flavors. Jazz up your sandwich with a little cranberry relish, chopped, toasted nuts, lemon-basil or even a little thousand island coleslaw - the skys the limit. Here are some of Bobbys savory sandwich creations. Visit www.facebook.com/Hellmanns to share how you build the perfect sandwich and enter the Hellmanns Build Your Perfect Sandwich Sweepstakes for a chance to win great prizes. continued on page 27
