SYNCHROTACT 5

Synchronizing and Paralleling Equipment and Systems

Safety and Availability

SYNCHROTACT products from ABB are used for automatic synchronization of generators with power lines and for paralleling of synchronous lines. They are designed for fully-automatic paralleling or monitoring of paralleling (Synchrocheck) by means of dual-channel or single-channel systems.

SYNCHROTACT 5 is the fifth generation of synchronizing equipment produced by ABB Industrie AG in Switzerland. It is newly developed based on decades of experience and focus on customers requirement.

Maximum safety
The safety of the generator and network, while synchronizing, is insured by a compact dual-channel system including two independent hardware and software. One channel is for automatic synchronizing and the other one is an additional independent monitoring of the first one. For the maximum operation safety the hardware and software of each channel are designed by different development engineers.

Optimum availability
The family range of SYNCHROTACT 5 facilitates other configuration concepts such as dual-channel bypass (redundant) synchronization, which connects a manual or automatic system in parallel to the automatic system. With this configuration full availability is achieved, in case of one channel failure, with maximum safety.

Optimized unit design

With SYNCHROTACT 5 a family of devices are available which can be combined easily to realize all possible reliable concepts to satisfy precise clients requirements in terms of safety and availability as described above. A redundant dual-channel system provided in one 19 inch casing eliminates interconnection wiring.

Applications and Functionality

SYNCHROTACT 5 is distinguished from its predecessor models by additional applications and its fundamentally improved service and maintenance tool. Its well-conceived and optimized hardware design reduces the number of required components to a minimum.

Lower engineering costs

Fewer auxiliary relays are required, as the contacts are designed more efficiently and inputs and outputs are separated galvanically one beneath the other. No separate power supply unit is required. A prefabricated unit is available for the selection of several paralleling points.

Variety of applications
For automatic synchronization and paralleling of generators For automatic paralleling of synchronous and asynchronous lines, transmission lines and busbars For monitoring of paralleling (Synchrocheck) as well as monitoring of automatic and manual paralleling procedures including dead bus For the rated frequencies 50 Hz, 60 Hz and 16 2/3 Hz For replacement of older SYNCHROTACT systems or synchronization units by other manufacturers.

Fast commissioning

The convenient PC software SynView allows simple and fast commissioning of a SYNCHROTACT 5 system. The commissioning and parameter setting of SYNCHROTACT 5 can also be comfortably performed without a PC, using the control elements in the front of the casing. Grouping within the parameter sets allows fast access to the individual parameters. For setting system parameters, very simple to use test functions are available. The SynView program indicates minimum, maximum and default values for each parameter when a parameter is selected and can provide a recommended value.

Special features
Up to seven sets of parameter for seven different paralleling points can be stored in one device Freely-configurable digital inputs and outputs.

The extended casing for dual-channel paralleling system and dual-channel bypass system, can be mounted in a 19 frame

SynView PC Program

SynView is the suitable tool for the simple and fast commissioning of SYNCHROTACT 5 equipment.

Simple parameter setting Selection of the parameter set Double-click on the desired parameter group Display of individual parameters Double-click on the parameter value Set new value on the parameter in question Transfer parameter set to SYNCHROTACT 5 by clicking on a button or using the menu option Write. User-friendly display of actual values Analog bar display of actual values U 1, U 2, f 1, f 2 Synchroscope display Numerical display of voltage difference U, phase-angle difference and slip s.

German, English or French languages are supported by SynView which runs under Microsoft Windows NT (95 or 98 on request). Other languages are possible but not supported as standard and are not included. Functions
SynView program offers the following four main functions:

Setting of parameters Display of actual values Transient recorder function

Event and error logging.

Graphic output of synchronizing events Synchronization procedures can be recorded and evaluated later with the transient recorder function of the SynView program. No separate transient recorder is required during commissioning.

Easy fault finding within service work SYNCHROTACT 5 features an event and error logger for 256 events, which are stored with date/time-stamp and the time past since the start of the synchronizing process. The values stored in the logger can be displayed in clear text.
