The church with heart in the heart of the city.

Just Around The Corner...Yesterday

furlough, not feeling like this is really home anymore, but a foreign place with foreign things and ideas. Family and friends are here, but you most likely feel uncomfortable around them now because you have changed so much, due to the work you do. You arent sure how to work the electronic key to your mothers car, which you have to borrow when you are home. Your tastes have changed so the food here is not as enjoyable as it once was. You are used to conversations about essential things concerning others or even your own needs just to survive or about what you will be doing the next day in Gods work. Of course you have spent time reminiscing or sharing funny stories with others in your new home, but you are no longer used to conversations about the more trivial things that folks in this country are used to talking about. What is now foreign to you are conversations about the next new gadget you want to get, how you just got the latest app on your cell phone, where you just bought those cute shoes, and how delicious your last trip to Sweet Frog was. You spend your days trying to rest up for the next leg of your missionary work, but you feel unsettled here. You also go to speaking engagements, to tell those that support you, how things have been going, about the people you are missionary to and how God has been moving. You pack up and bring your artifacts and unpack them to set them out and pack them up again. You often speak to less than full church services, because they knew a missionary was coming that day. You get your spiritual support from God and His word, but you get your financial support just to survive and more importantly, maybe, mental support and love from other Christians when they come to hear you speak. That support means more to you now than you may have realized. In this issue:

Suzanne Barden, Missionary to Ethiopia

What can be said about missionaries that you dont all ready know You may think, I have heard so many missionaries and they have similar stories but with different details all depending on which people they work with, so why come hear another one? Well, let us try to imagine how a missionary feels when back in the States, and maybe we might feel differently about hearing another one. Though we realize and appreciate the sacrifice of Missionaries leaving home, family and friends here to go make a new home in an entirely new atmosphere, do we ever understand the enormity of that and realize their real need for support? Please just consider their situation for a moment as if it were your own. You dont get to bring your parents or friends along for moral support or get to take much with you that you cherish. You will be in a new place not to satisfy any of your own desires but to fulfill the needs of others, so you will be taking with you, instead, things that others there will need. Lets skip the years you spent forming your new life, your new connections, because that is most likely something you have considered in the past, when deciding whether or not you, yourself, were going to become a missionary, so lets now consider instead, what it feels like to come back home. After being gone for a couple years or longer you come home on

obstacles she has faced and how God can work through them. Suzanne is primarily focused on building relationships with the community, but has to do it through the Orthodox Church, which is sometimes a challenge. Mainly using craft times to build relationships with the children and parents, she seeks out times to share Christs love and message. Please be in continued prayer for Suzanne as she faces the joys and challenges of doing Gods work in Ethiopia. God bless you! Prohibitions against prayer are now common in most public school graduations. But some students at a high school in Washington, Illinois, came up with a way around the ban. Ryan Brown, a graduate scheduled to give a speech, paused to bow in silent prayer as he approached the podium. Moments later, with all eyes on him, Brown faked a sneeze. In response, a handful of his friends shouted, God bless you!
