The members of Temple Mount Sinai will celebrate a special milestone in our 113-year history next month: the installation of a new spiritual leader for our community. On September 9, Rabbi Sandra Bellush will be formally welcomed as Temple Mount Sinais ninth rabbi and first woman rabbi, joining Rabbi Larry Bach in leading our growing congregation. Rabbi Sigma Faye Coran of Cincinnati will join Rabbis Bach and Bellush, and Rabbi Emeritus Ken Weiss, in conducting the historic installation during Friday night services. Ordained in May 2011 at the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion, Rabbi

Bellush brings a wealth of experience to her new position. After a career in management consulting and investment banking in New York City, she pursued her Jewish studies first in the Shliach Khilah training program in 2003-2004. There she met Ellen Goodman, one of our Temples lay leaders, and first heard about our congregation. Rabbi Bellush went on to earn her Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters in 2010, receiving the Nathan Stern Prize for achieving the graduating classs highest academic standing. While a student and rabbinic intern, she worked with six congregations, including a university Hil(Continued on page 2)

lel group and taught at the Cincinnati Reform Jewish High School. At Hebrew Union College, she was awarded the Cora Kahn Prize for outstanding sermon delivery and oratory, a prize also earned by Rabbi Bach during his rabbinical training. To celebrate the longanticipated addition of a second rabbi, we will be welcoming Sandra and her husband Arnold with a fiesta: a festive dinner of Mexican specialties catered by The Greenery. El Pasos entire Jewish community is invited to join us on this landmark occasion. The dinner will include a Favorite Desserts Buffet, with congregation members bringing their own dessert specialty or family favorite. Volunteers are needed to contribute a dessert and to help with table decorations and set-up; please call 833-4526 or email cindygraffcohen@gmail.com. In keeping with our Shabbat dinner tradition, payment must be made in advance; please mail a check to the Temple to make your reservation. To charge your payment, you may call the office or email your reservation.

about Rabbi Coran

Rabbi Sigma Faye Coran has served as Senior Rabbi of K.K. Bene Israel / Rockdale Temple, Cincinnati, Ohio since July 1, 2004, when she became the first female Senior Rabbi serving a Cincinnati congregation. Ordained at Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1993, Rabbi Coran served as the Jewish Chaplain at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts until 2004. She was also the Family Educator at Congregation Beth Israel, North Adams, Massachusetts. Since ordination, Rabbi Coran has served congregations in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Worcester, Massachusetts and is active in a variety of social action organizations. When Rabbi Bellush and her husband Arnold relocated to Cincinnati in 2005 there were four Reform congregations in Cincinnati. Upon meeting Rabbi Coran, the Bellushes decided to make Rockdale Temple their new spiritual home. Congregant Bellush sang in the Choir and taught Religious School in the year prior to studying in Jerusalem. Several years later, Student Rabbi Bellush served as a rabbinic intern at Rockdale under Rabbi Corans guidance and direction. Rabbi Coran lives in Cincinnati with her husband, Rabbi Matthew Kraus, and their four children, Jacob, Shirah, Micah, and Eden. Rabbi Coran is an avid reader, a media-watcher, and most importantly, a great listener --three traits which spark conversation and connection with the 450 families of the Rockdale Temple community. K.K. Bene Israel Rockdale Temple is the oldest Jewish congregation west of the Allegheny Mountains. Founded by a small group of Jews who had settled in Cincinnati, then a frontier town, the first meeting took place in 1824. The first building was consecrated in 1836. Since that time there have been nine rabbis at Rockdale Temple and Rabbi Coran is the tenth rabbi to serve the congregation.

Landscaping
Temples landscaping was greatly affected by the freeze in February and we want to share what is happening to care for our Temple grounds. We are actively watering all of the plants and trees on the property and working to complete repairs on the irrigation lines to insure that the plants receive appropriate water. We are encouraged to see new growth on some of the trees, but we will certainly lose some of them. We are continuing to water to give the plant material time to recover and then we will determine exactly what will need to be removed and to decide what will be replaced. In the short run, this will leave the landscape unsightly but it will give us the opportunity to replace only what is needed. We feel this is the most cost effective and reasonable option. Our annual landscaping budget does not anticipate costs like this. Large landscaping projects are typically funded though donations to the "Landscaping Special Projects Fund. We are asking that you think of the beauty of our grounds when making donations to Temple and consider the Landscape Fund to assist in making Temple the beautiful place it was in the past. Hopefully the grounds here may be renewed in the not too distant future.

Albertsons Cash-Back Fundraiser

Please remember to use your key tag each time you shop for groceries at Albertsons. All you need to do is have the card scanned when you check out. Temple will earn 1% of your shopping total each time you scan the card, at no additional cost to you. If you need additional key tags, they are available in the Temple office.

Gesher
I always thought it was silly to put your infant or really young child into class situations. I thought, What could he possibly be getting out of this? When he came home singing I had a little dreidel at age 2, I realized he was learning and absorbing far more than Id ever know! ~parent of a Gesher child Gesher provides more than just age-appropriate art projects, stories and social time for children from birth to age 4. It opens a pathway into Jewish life a bridge to walk along while learning about life. If you have a child that would like to participate in Gesher during the 2011-2012 school year, please join us for the first class on Sunday, August 28th. We begin our class with tfilah (prayer) at 9:30am along with the rest of the Religious School. This is where our prayer bridge is begun! Then we go back to our classroom in Zielonka Hall for stories, movement, music, art and more with Alison Westermann, the new Gesher teacher. For more information, to request a registration form, or to volunteer in any way to help with Gesher, please contact Alison at alisonwestermann@gmail.com or call 915-443-4084.

Growing in Body, Heart, and Spirit

Each week (for the most part), we offer opportunities for growth in body, mind and heart. Not so much classes as opportunities for practice, our yoga, meditation, and text study are at the core of our adult learning and growth. Theres great benefit from attending regularly, but drop-ins are always welcome! Meditation. There are members of the congregation who share a commitment to a regular meditation practice, and recognize that a group environment provides support for that practice. Please consider joining us as we sit, focus and reflect. We are currently looking for a new, more convenient time for a weekly 45minute sit. If you are interested, please call Rabbi Bach. Yoga Practice, Wednesdays at 9 am. Take a much needed break in your day for one hour of yoga on Wednesdays at 9 am. Anusara-Inspired teacher, Susan Jaffee, will lead you through a life-affirming, heart-oriented practice. This hour yoga session is suitable for yoga students of all levels. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring your own mat and yoga props (belt, block and yoga blankets). The Weekly Portion as a Vehicle for Spiritual Growth, Saturdays at 9:30 am. Every Saturday at 9:30 am, a diverse and lively group of participants gathers to study the weekly Torah portion through the lens of Hasidic spirituality. Rabbi Bach typically brings a text from one of the classics of Hasidic Torah commentary, in Hebrew and in translation, which serves as the starting point for our conversation. We conclude in time for the 10:30 am Shabbat morning service. Bagels and coffee are provided, and all are welcome.

Adult Hebrew, Tuesdays at 6 pm

Adult Hebrew 6 pm, Tuesdays. The Adult Hebrew class continues to meet in the Zork Library at Temple on a different night of the week, Tuesday evenings from 6 pm to 7 pm. The students are progressing nicely with their reading and understanding of Hebrew and the weekly Torah portions. If you are interested in learning with us, please join us on Tuesday evenings. If you have any questions, feel free to call Ed Solomon at 525-4616.
