CORE MODULES Note: Students are able to choose from a wide range of electives from stage 2 onwards.

Stage 1: Engineering Mathematics A y This module is designed to provide students with the fundamental skills in mathematics required to solve basic engineering problems. Topics are introduced in an order that is intended to keep abreast of the application requirements in engineering modules. The emphasis in each topic is on simple applications and problem solving. Throughout the module, there is appropriate use of a Computer Algebra System. Topics include algebra, trigonometry, logarithms, matrices and complex numbers. Stage 1: Principles of DC Circuits y This module provides basic knowledge in electricity to prepare students for more specialized subjects. It deals with the basic concepts of electrical circuits and the methods used to analyze them. The module stresses the fundamental understanding of Ohm's law, KVL and KCL. Topics covered include resistive circuits such as series circuits, parallel circuits and series-parallel circuits. This leads into network analysis and network theorems. The circuit analysis topics are covered as purely resistive circuits with dc voltage inputs. Stage 1: Basic Electronics & Devices y This module aims to provide students with basic knowledge of commonly used electronic devices. It covers the constructions, operating principles and common applications of diodes and Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJT). Stage 2: Engineering Mathematics B y This module is designed to provide students with the fundamental skills in mathematics required to solve basic engineering problems. Topics are introduced in an order that is intended to keep abreast of the application requirements in engineering modules. The emphasis in each topic is on simple applications and problem solving. Throughout the module, there is appropriate use of a Computer Algebra System. Topics include trigonometry, coordinate geometry, differentiation and integration with applications. Stage 2: Principles of AC Circuits y The aim of the module is to provide students with a basic knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles in electrical engineering technology. AC Circuits covers capacitance, capacitors in series and parallel, concepts of charging and discharging through simple RC Circuits, inductance and RL circuits, alternating current and voltage waveforms, power generation, and phasors. It also includes basic ac theory which covers mainly KVL and KCL in simple ac series, parallel and series-parallel combination circuits, ac power, power factor and energy. Stage 2: Principles of Digital Electronics y This module is for working adults with or without any basic knowledge of digital electronics and logic gates. The main focus of the module will be the introduction of logic families and application of specific function integrated circuits such as counters, decoders/demultiplexers, multiplexers, magnit ude comparators, adders etc. and more complicated digital circuit design and applications.

Stage 3: Mini Electronic Control Project y This is a hands-on continuous assessment module that requires students to go through analysis, design and assembly of a mini electronic control system. 80% of the module hours will be spent on practical work. Quiz and simple system modelling exercise will also be included to enhance students learning experience. y The classical PID controller is a widely used control strategy in the industry, and this module prepares the students with the basic skills and knowledge in configuring a single-loop feedback control system. Students will get to build one of the two systems introduced, namely, inverted cart pendulum and pingpong ball levitator. As this module leans towards self-paced learning, students are only required to attend 7 formal in-campus sessions for lecturing, test and measurements and submission of project. Students are issued with tools and electronic kits well in advanced to facilitate them in carrying out assembly work offcampus. Stage 3: Analog Circuits & Applications y This module aims to provide students with knowledge of the operating principles and the design characteristics of commonly used analog devices and circuits. It also illustrates their applications in various practical circuits. Stage 4: Basic Internetworking y This module describes the evolution of distributed computing as a result of advancing technologies. It provides an overview of internetworking, including the concept and layering of the OSI Model, Internetworking Devices, IP Addressing, ARP/RARP, LAN Media & Topology, Structured Cabling, Electronics, and Network Management. Participants will learn to build patch cables, installation of structured cabling, and use of test equipment. Stage 4: Principles of Control Systems y A concise coverage of the feedback control principles. The topics cover basic concepts of automatic control, control systems hardware, simple analytical tools and stability analysis of systems. An introduction to the use of MATLAB as a computer tool for control system design is also included. Stage 5: Principles of Photonics y The Principles of Photonics module provides the students with a basic foundation in wave and geometric optics, lasers, interferometry and optical detectors. This is supported with online assessments, practical assignments and course work. Stage 5: Routing Principles y This module focuses on the fundamentals of IP Routing and the different types of Routing Protocols. Participants will be introduced to Router Components, Router Setup and Startup, Router Configuration, Internetwork Operating System (IOS), TCP/IP, and Routing Protocols. Participants will learn to configure routers and setup a simple network using routers, switches, and associated hardware and software tools during the practical sessions. Stage 6: Basic Microcontroller Programming y This module introduces students to the fundamentals of microcontroller architecture, programming in C and the basic microcontroller interfacing to various Input/Output devices. Interfacing circuits together with C language are used to illustrate system input-output and software of working systems.

Stage 6: Digital Signal Processing & Application y This module introduces to students the principles of digital signal processing and applications. It provides students with the necessary theory and knowledge in signals and systems that are required for the design and implementation of digital filters and various applications.

ASSESSMENT Assessment includes examinations, continuous assessments, assignments and project work.
