1.2.1 Preparing the column Decide the place for the mammography system and the method of installing - base plate or wall mount. For the wall mount installation, find the necessary dimensions from the Alpha Installation Manual.
Remove the ECS/EPS board from carriage to prevent damage when lifting up the column.
Lay the column down with the c-arm axle against the floor. Be careful with the cables coming out not to damage them.
1.2.2 Preparing the c-arm Installing the ECS/EPS mechanics to the c-arm: Remove the c-arm top cover and the small back cover.
Place the C-arm on the floor so that it rests on the tube and image receptor. Attach the ECS/EPS mechanism to the C-arm with four bolts. See figure 1. (This procedure requires that the holes for these bolts are aligned. If it is necessary to move the ECS/EPS mechanism to align these holes, use a voltage supply, for example a regular 9V battery, to run the motor. Be careful not to run the mechanism against either end.) Figure1 Installing the ECS/EPS mechanism
Make sure that the metal plate attached to the ECS/EPS mechanism is not bent or otherwise damaged.

Loosen the bottom four bolts holding the column top hat and pull it out. Remove the L-shaped bumper. Pull the counterweight outwards until you can easily reach the bolts. When installing both systems at the same time, push the counterweight in at this point.
Remove completely the two support blocks holding the bar for the steel cables. Open the bolts holding the two plastic glides (two bolts a side). Take the additional counterweight piece and with the four M6x50 bolts shipped with the system bolt it to the original counterweight. See figure 2.
The two plastic glides must be between the two weights. Make sure that the addition is positioned in the right way so that you can still attach back the blocks holding the steel cables. They will be going in the groove of the additional piece. Make sure when you tighten the bolts that the two counterweights are in line with each other. This is to prevent the additional piece from touching the inside of the column when the carriage is driven up or down.

ECS/EPS-200
Install the ECS/EPS extension block (32764) if necessary. With the extension block the C-arm moves 100 mm lower in the lowest position.
Screw the two blocks holding the carriage steel cables back to the counterweight. Make sure that the cables are not twisted.
Push the counterweight back into the column. Again, make sure that the two weights are in line with each other. There should be at least 5mm between sides of the additional weight and the insides of the column.
Push the counterweight further back into the column and put the bumper back in place. Push the counterweight all the way in till it rests against the assembly pin. This is important to prevent damage to the z-motor further on during the installation. Replace the column top and tighten the bolts holding the top.
WARNING!
The total weight of the column, carriage and the counterweight is now over 120 kg. Do not lift alone!
Be careful if the carriage moves when lifting the column. Take special care if the counterweight is not resting against the assembly pin.
Tighten the side plates holding the column upright. Do not forget the tightening plate and do not tighten the bolts too tight holding it. This might deform the column and prevent the counterweight from travelling freely.

Initial power up
Provided that you have all the connectors closed, turn the power of Alpha on. Check the following: The LEDs H1 (+34V), H2 (+15V), H4 (+5V) and H5 (if the C-arm is shifted) on the ECS/EPS Driver Board turn on. The c-arm brake release buttons in the c-arm handles do not operate if the C-arm is shifted. The brake can be released only if the C-arm is in the lowest position (the photo interrupter has entered the slot and the microswitch on the side of the ECS/EPS mechanism is activated). Press "C-arm up" and "C-arm down" -buttons on the Driver Board momentarily and see that the drive directions are correct. Drive the C-arm down carefully. Make sure that the metal plate enters the photo interrupter slot and that the movement stops.
Warning!
The ECS/EPS mechanism and the motor will be damaged if the C-arm is driven against a mechanical limit. The movement should be stopped by the photo interrupter.
Drive the C-arm to its upper limit. Check that there is enough slack in the cables. Make sure that the metal plate enters the photo interrupter slot and that the movement is stopped.
Press "Return" -button and check that the adapter returns to lowest position from all other positions. The movement can be stopped by pressing the "C-arm up" or "C-arm down" buttons.
When driven away from the lowest position, check that the c-arm brake does not release. After returning the c-arm, check that the brake releases again.

SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS
ECS/EPS Driver Board - Functional Description
The ECS/EPS Driver Board Controls the C-arm movement of the ECS/EPS-200TM device. It is an electronic circuit board that requires software based control from Alpha unit. Software version in Alpha unit must be 7.27 or greater.
1. 2.
Up and down from footpedal in either C-arm or ECS/EPS mode. Up and down from either one the two switches located on both sides of the C-arm covers.
3.
Automatic return of the C-arm to it's lowest position after an exposure if the autorelease function in the Alpha control panel has been selected.
4.
Return of the C-arm to it's lowest position from the return switch located on both sides of the C-arm covers.
Up, Down and Return switches are also available on the circuit board for service purposes.
Motor control The C-arm movement is handled by a pulse width modulated (PWM) DC motor. The speed of the C-arm and ECS/EPS are separately adjusted with trimmer potentiometers R37 (C-arm) and R59 (ECS/EPS) respectively. The PWM control circuit ICA3 (TL494) controls the motor voltage according the reference voltage (TP3). The motor is activated by pulling the *MOTOR ENABLE signal down.
The direction of the C-arm is determined by relay K2. The default direction of the C-arm is down.
Movement limits The C-arm movement limits are sensed with two photointerrupters on the electronic circuit board (ICD9 and ICD10). When the limit is reached a metal plate enters the photointerrupter slot turning the photointerrupter transistor off.
January 1999
12
32921-4AA
Up and down The user can move the C-arm up and down with a switch located on the cover or with a footpedal. The *CARM UP signal activates relay K2 and changes the direction of the motor drive. The motor drive is enabled if the C-arm is not in it's upper limit.
*CARM DWN signal moves the C-arm down. The motor drive is enabled if the C-arm is not in it's lower limit.
Return The user can return the C-arm to it's normal position (down) by pressing the return switch. This activates D-flip flop ICD6 if the relay K2 is not activated (that is if the direction of the C-arm is down). When the lower limit is reached the flip flop is reset and motor drive is disabled.
Autorelease The autorelease function returns the C-arm down after an exposure. The information of an exposure is derived from control signals for ANODE MOTOR DRIVE board (connectors X5 and X6). ANENA signal is active during preheat sequence and an exposure.
If the compression paddle is driven up after exposure, the C-arm is returned down after the compression paddle has reached it's upper limit. The information of compression paddle movement is derived from compression motor encoder (connector X8).
Compression current limit The information of the compression reaching it's current limit is derived from the compression motor voltage (connector X3 pins 10 and 11). When the breast is being compressed (paddle moving) the optocoupler ICD11 A and B are activated.
