STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver In many Middle Eastern cultures, it is traditional to celebrate a wedding with five events. The first is the engagement party, during which the bride-to-be changes clothes several times. When the bride and groom sign the marriage contract there is another party, again with numerous changes of clothing by the bride. The day before the wedding there is a henna party, during which the bride and others are painted with elaborate designs that are thought to ward off evil spirits. The reception takes place after the wedding, and guests are often given five almond pieces, each piece symbolizing one of the sacred wedding wishes: health, happiness, wealth, longevity and fertility. Seven days after the wedding is the final celebratory event, known as sabaa, which is for women only and is analogous to the wedding shower we have in the West. The town of North Pole, Alaska, is actually 1,700 miles south of the planets geographical North Pole. *** It was way back in the 17th century when noted Scottish scholar Patrick Young made the following sage observation: The trouble with weather forecasting is that its right too often for us to ignore it and wrong too often for us to rely on it. JUNIOR HUNTING SEASONS JUST AROUND THE CORNER In addition to the upcoming junior pheasant season, which will be held Oct. 8-15, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has established other special seasons for those 12 to 16 years of age, who can hunt either with or without a junior hunting license. Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director, noted that the newest junior season added to the agencys line up is the junior rabbit season, which will run concurrently with the junior pheasant season, from Oct. 8-15. As pheasants and rabbits inhabit similar habitat and can both be pursued using bird or rabbit hunting dogs, running these two seasons together broadens the opportunity and excitement for younger hunters, Roe said. Experienced hunters with dogs are encouraged to pass along our states hunting heritage by serving as mentors for junior hunters. In fact, the Game Commission has published a new planning guide to assist individual hunters or conservation organizations that host guided hunts for eligible junior hunters. To view a copy of the new manual, go to the Game Commission website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), click on Education in the menu bar at the top of the homepage, select Special Hunts in the Special Events and Programs, and then choose Youth/Junior Hunt Planning Guide in the Special Hunt Guides. Other junior-only seasons in which participating junioraged hunters are not required to first obtain a license are for squirrel (Oct. 8-14) and waterfowl (Sept. 17 and 24). While they are not required to purchase a license, participating youth must first pass a basic Hunter-Trapper Education course. Junior-only seasons in which participating youth must pass a basic Hunter-Trapper Education course and obtain the required licenses are: antlerless deer (Oct. 20-22) and spring gobbler day (April 21). Roe also noted junior license holders antler restrictions require that a legal buck must have one antler of more than three inches in length or one antler with at least two points. fb

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Sept. 7, 1813, the United States gets its nickname when a New York newspaper refers to Uncle Sam. The name is linked to meat packer Samuel Wilson, who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army during the War of 1812. Wilson stamped the barrels with U.S. for United States, but soldiers began referring to the grub as Uncle Sams. On Sept. 6, 1847, writer Henry David Thoreau moves in with Ralph Waldo Emerson in Concord, Mass., after living for two years in a shack he built himself on Walden Pond. In 1854, his collection of essays, Walden, or Life in the Woods, is published. On Sept. 10, 1919, almost a year after the end of the First World War, New York City holds a parade to welcome home Gen. John J. Pershing, commander in chief of the American Expeditionary Force, and some 25,000 soldiers who had served on the Western Front. On Sept. 11, 1930, Katherine Anne Porters first collection of short stories, Flowering Judas, is published. During her lifetime, she published 25 stories and one novel, Ship of Fools, which took her more than two decades to complete.

You probably dont realize, though, that the brutal practice didnt originate with the Indians. When the Dutch and English settlers were trying to clear out the natives, they were paid a bounty for each scalp they brought back. The Native Americans adopted the practice only after the Europeans arrival on the continent. Those who study such things say that 70 percent of Americans have visited either Disneyland, in California, or Disney World, in Florida. MAKE MONEY! Do you encourage? I sat in one of those comfy chairs in the mall; the kind they put there for Dads when theyre sent out of the clothing store for asking, What about this? for the hundredth time. And so I sat watching people go by. One family had a toddler who was just catching on to walking. She would take a few steps, her face lighting up with the biggest, prettiest smile youve ever seen, and then all of a sudden, she lost her balance and sat down. Her family encouraged to get up and try again, which she did; her smile resplendent once more. After a few more steps, shed plop down, then stand up and give it another go. She spent just about as much time on the floor as she did walking. But with her familys encouragement, she kept trying. They knew that one day she would walk without falling. Today, someone around you is going to fall, make a mistake; blow it. Avoid criticizing them. Instead encourage them, believing that one day they will get it right. BELIEVERS CHAPEL 2522 West Five Mile Rd., Allegany, NY716-397-8016 Sunday Worship ....................9:00am & 11:00am *** The states long-standing two-pheasant daily bag limit will apply to junior hunters participating in the season. In addition, depending on the area in which they are hunting, juniors will be required to comply with restrictions on hunting male or female pheasants. Eligible juniors must be between 12 and 16 years of age, and have successfully completed a basic Hunter-Trapper Education course. There is no requirement that participating juniors purchase a license, but they must wear the necessary orange and be accompanied as required by law. Roe noted the junior pheasant hunt is not part of the Mentored Youth Hunting Program for those hunters under the age of 12, which allows mentored youth to hunt for groundhog, squirrel, coyotes, spring gobbler and antlered and antlerless deer. (For more info. on the Mentored Youth Hunting Program, please see pg. 15 of the 2011-12 Pennsylvania Hunting & Trapping Digest, which is provided to each license buyer.) The junior pheasant season runs from Saturday, Oct. 8, through Saturday, Oct. 14. The season also takes advantage of many schools having off for the Columbus Day holiday. In addition to the pheasants being provided to clubs hosting a junior pheasant hunt, the Game Commission will stock 15,000 pheasants for the junior pheasant season on various sites throughout Pennsylvania on Friday, Oct. 7. For more info., including a listing of general stocking locations for the junior pheasant season, see pgs. 25-27 of the Digest, or go to the Game Commission website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), put your cursor over Hunt/Trap in the menu bar at the top of the page, click on Hunting, click on Pheasant in the Small Game listing and then look under the Junior Youth Pheasant Hunt category. CLUBS SIGN UP TO HOST JUNIOR PHEASANT HUNTS Harrisburg - Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe today offered his praise to the 19 sportsmens clubs throughout Pennsylvania who signed up to host junior pheasant hunts. The clubs will share about 1,800 pheasants the agency is providing for junior pheasant hunts, which all will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8. Last year, 24 clubs signed up to host junior pheasant hunts. While the agencys financial situation remains a concern, providing pheasants to clubs sponsoring junior pheasant hunts is a wise investment, Roe said. The only two stipulations for clubs to be eligible to receive Game Commission birds are that these hunts must have registration open to the public and must be held on public lands or private lands enrolled in one of the Game Commissions Hunter Access Program.

The ship was headed for Virginia, but stormy weather and navigational errors forced the Mayflower off course. On Nov. 21, the "Pilgrims" arrived in Massachusetts. On Sept. 17, 1923, a fire threatens the University of California at Berkeley, kills two people and causes $10 million in damages. Homeowners fought the flames with garden hoses and buckets, and students from the University of California pitched in, as the fire came right to the campus gates. On Sept. 13, 1936, 17-year-old Cleveland Indians pitching ace "Rapid" Robert Feller strikes out 17 batters in a game, setting a new American League record. Feller allowed just two hits to help his team to a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia As. On Sept. 12, 1940, a collection of 600 prehistoric cave paintings and 1,500 engravings are discovered in a grotto near Montignac, France. The 5,000- to 17,000-year-old paintings consisted mostly of animal representations. The Lascaux grotto's main cavern is 66 feet wide and 16 feet high. On Sept. 14, 1964, writer John Steinbeck is presented the U.S. Medal of Freedom. Steinbeck had already received numerous honors and awards for his writing, including the 1962 Nobel Prize, and the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for "The Grapes of Wrath." He also wrote "Tortilla Flat," "East of Eden" and the novella "Of Mice and Men." On Sept. 18, 1987, cesium-137 is removed from an abandoned cancer-therapy machine in Brazil. Junkyard workers, fascinated by the glowing blue stone inside and completely unaware of its dangers, distributed pieces to friends, relatives and neighbors. Hundreds of people were eventually poisoned by radiation from the substance, and 40 contaminated homes had to be demolished. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE WELLSVILLE CREATIVE ARTS CENTER 2011 ARTIST SERIES PRESENTS THE WORK OF RICK MINARD Wellsville, NY- The Wellsville Creative Arts Center 2011 Artist Series is currently featuring the work of Rick Minard entitled, The Complexity and Simplicity of Pattern. This exhibit is free to the public and runs from August 15th until September 30th. A reception will be held on Thursday, September 8th, from 6pm to 8pm. In addition to his woven paintings, Ricks current work also focuses on blending painting, drawing and computergenerated imagery. His artwork is inspired by the idea that human beings have a tendency to find patterns in every aspect of their lives. Patterns provide a sense of logic in a sometimes chaotic world. These works of art are an attempt to observe these patterns and the interactions of the resulting relationships. By exploring various colors and textures and fracturing multiple layers, these images convey either a sense of pleasant simplicity or an overwhelming sense of complexity. Rick Minard, a former painting teacher at the Wellsville Creative Arts Center, recently earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He lives in Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania with his wife Rachel and son Quentin. He maintains a studio in his home and has just been hired as a Visiting Professor of Art at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. f 4Cs SENIOR CITIZENS The 4Cs Senior Citizens met August 23rd with forty members and two guests attending. Cakes were brought by Ethel Hint, Becky Cady and Diane Little. The door prize was won by Rita Tompkins and the 50-50 by Clarence Smith. Craig Braack presented a slide show featuring his own amazing photography and expertise of the bird life of Florida, including Egrets, Herons, an Ibis, Spoonbills and Pelicans among others. Our trip to Williamsport was a great success as to weather and scenery and the boat ride as well as dinner and a museum visit and a stop at the Tioga Dam. And at Knights Creek on returning we saw a bear dashing into a corn field, which was close and exciting. There will be a mystery trip on September 28th. Our next meeting will be September 13th with Jack Schula, Rita Tompkins, Dan and Diane Little serving as the kitchen committee. -Becky Cady f OSWAYO VALLEY MEMORIAL LIBRARY Hrs: Mon. 10-8pm; Wed. 9-6pm; Fri. 9-6pm tf

for National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month as additional outreach is done to spread the word. Volumes of information about the highly successful Narconon Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation program are being released to the parents and loved ones of those abusing drugs, including prescription drugs, or alcohol or all three. Happily, in many cases the calls come in from the addicts themselves who have found the information and want to change. We deliver a highly effective, comprehensive program at Narconon of Georgia that has been achieving fully recovered individuals for 44 years. In addition to getting people off alcohol and drugs, our program includes detoxification to get all the drugs or alcohol out of their systems that helps prevent cravings. This is followed by a series of classes to help the client get to the root of why he/she became an addict in the first place and to teach life skills to help them stay clean and make good choices, says Mary Rieser, Executive Director for Narconon Drug Rehab in Georgia. Rieser goes on to say that the Narconon Drug Rehab programs success rate, that is 4 times higher than the national average, is the result of the comprehensive series of steps and classes the clients does and its aftercare program. An aftercare program is uniquely tailored to the individual and encompasses several areas: Support systems, Lifestyle changes, Educational planning, Financial planning, selfenhancement goals, Relationships, Living arrangements, and Social / Spiritual development. It is not uncommon for the family of the client to be involved in this section and might actually be an active participant in the aftercare plan. Each client varies so there are no set requirements for the family involvement. Then, qualified Narconon staff follow-up with each client on their personalized aftercare program and help to ensure progress being made. Narconon of Georgia, located in Atlanta, is a private nonprofit agency that is licensed by the State of Georgia. For over a decade they have provided Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation

and Recovery Services to individuals throughout the nation that are dealing with alcohol and substance abuse. Their program boasts at 76% success rate. Additionally, they offer drug education and are involved in community outreach programs. Their motto is Recovery is more than a dream... Whisk oil, vinegar, mustard, onion, salt, pepper and honey in a large bowl; add black-eyed peas, bell pepper, tomato, celery, carrots and parsley. Gently stir to combine. 2. Cover and refrigerate up to 24 hours before serving. Yields 5 1/2 cups, about 8 servings. Add a fabric-softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. While you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home. You also can use a cotton ball scented with your favorite essential oil or even perfume. Got bug bites? Try these for some relief from the itching of insect bites: apple-cider vinegar; a paste of baking soda and water, allowed to dry on the bite; a similar paste of meat tenderizer and water; or antiperspirant. A: I, too, am eager for this miniseries, which is slated to air next year. I'm happy to report that Bill Paxton -- of Big Love, Apollo 13 and Twister fame -is set to play Randall McCoy, the famed arch nemesis of Devil Anse Hatfield. *** Q: I'm excited that my favorite show, 90210, is coming back to the CW soon. CELEBRITY EXTRA Q: I saw Nancy McKeon a while back on Disney Channels Sonny With a Chance playing Demi Lovatos mom, and I wondered what else she has been doing lately. -- Sally T., via e-mail A: Nancy currently co-stars in the Hallmark Channel original movie Love Begins, which airs Sunday, Sept. 18. Nancy plays Millie, a local restaurant owner and the heart and soul of the town of Andersons Corner. Nancy told me a main reason she took the role: her daughters. There are projects Ive done that are just too grown-up for them to see. This was a chance for them to make fun of me in funny costumes and funny shoes and funny hair. They had a great time. Plus, I love the stories Hallmark tells, and this group of people were pretty terrific to work with. *** Q: I love classic Westerns, especially The Rifleman. Can you tell me if series stars Chuck Connors and Johnny Crawford are still living, and if so, what they are doing? -- Rhonda H., Bountiful, Utah A: Chuck Connors passed away in 1992 at the age of 71 of pneumonia stemming from lung cancer. His 40-year career spanned sports (basketball and baseball), film and TV; however, he was best known as Lucas McCain of The Rifleman. Johnny Crawford, 65, slowly stepped away from acting and headed toward music. He leads the Johnny Crawford Orchestra. See what hes been up to, and if hes coming to your area, at crawfordmusic.com. *** Q: As a history buff, I was excited to read in your column that the History Channel is making a miniseries about the Hatfields and McCoys, starring Kevin Costner as Anse Hatfield. Who will play Randall McCoy? -- Darnell R., via e-mail NOW HERE'S A TIP To fix a hole in drywall that requires a healthy helping of joint compound, cut a piece of screen slightly bigger than the hole and tack it to the inside of the drywall. You also can wad up a piece of aluminum foil and shove it in the hole, pressing it in a bit to create a recess for the compound. The foil will keep the compound at the site of the hole, allowing it to set up instead of fall down. I recently did a little work on my car, and afterward I washed and waxed it. My tools got pretty grimy, so I cleaned them too. Since I had the wax out, I used it on several of them to keep them from rusting in storage. -- A Reader, via email

Nancy McKeon A: 90210 returns for its fourth season on Tuesday, Sept. 13. I spoke with Michael Steger, who plays Navid Shirazi, and he gave me the scoop (but not enough to get him in trouble). Navids going to be working with Dixon, but Dixons no longer working FOR Navid. Max and Naomi and the whole pregnancy bomb at the finale, they address that in the first episode. Also, Navids family flies to Switzerland to be with his father, but his sister doesnt get on the plane. Navid does see Adrianna again, and its a very awkward situation, but they do talk in the first two episodes. Also, were doing a lot more location stuff. Ive never seen my dogs mope when I walked in the door; rather, they always are right there to greet me. Pets do enrich our lives, and many of us consider them to be a part of the family. Dear Paws: Im pretty sure I wouldnt be alive without my dog Blake. Im a senior citizen; my wife passed away three years ago, and most of my children live too far away to visit regularly. Blake sleeps at the side of my bed every night and at exactly 6 a.m. every morning he sits up next to me, licks my face until Im awake. Hes so happy when I get out of bed that he turns in circles nonstop until I get dressed so I can take him out for his morning walk. At my last checkup, my doctor said those morning walks are helping keep my blood pressure under control and I seem in good spirits. I do enjoy taking care of Blake and hes the one who kept me going after my wife passed. Blake is family to me and no one can tell me different. Sign me -- Stubborn Old Bob in Palmyra, N.Y. you may pay for the entire wedding yourself or share the costs with the grooms parents or the bride and groom. Tradition also dictates that the father of the bride escort her down the aisle. However, as with paying for the wedding, the tradition may be altered. Your daughter may choose to walk down the aisle by herself or ask you and your wife to accompany her. Whatever she chooses, be gracious and follow her wishes without complaint. In addition to walking the bride down the aisle, the father of the bride stands in the receiving line greeting guests. You will be welcoming people from both your side and your new son-in-laws side, so dont be afraid to introduce yourself or your family and friends. The father of the bride may also be involved in the couples first dance, cutting in on the groom and dancing with his daughter first and then later with his wife and the grooms mother. Depending upon what the bride and groom have planned, you may be asked to dance with a number of people, so put on your dancing shoes and be ready to give it a whirl. If you cant dance or youre feeling rusty, you may want to enroll in a dance class. These are just some of the major duties that the father of the bride is often

Whats A Father To Do?

By Tresa Erickson Its Sunday morning. Youre sitting at the kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper when the phone rings. Its your daughter and shes bubbling with excitement. Her boyfriend proposed last night and she accepted. In a few months your little girl will be getting married. Theres so much to plan, so much to do. As father of the bride, you probably wont be involved much in the planning, but there are a few duties that you and the grooms father may be asked to perform and should start preparing for now. According to tradition, the father of the bride hosts the engagement party and gives the first toast. Of course, if your daughter and future sonin-law live far away or choose not to have an engagement party, you may forgo the toast. Be prepared, however. You may be asked to give a toast later at the rehearsal dinner or the wedding reception. The father of the bride usually pays for the wedding, too. However, with the rising costs of weddings today, this may not necessarily be the case. Depending upon your financial situation and the bride and grooms wishes,

responsible for. Traditions were made to be broken, though, so dont be surprised if you find yourself doing other things. Your duties will vary according to the bride and grooms wishes, as will those of the father of the groom. Traditionally, the father of the groom hosts and pays for the rehearsal dinner. Today, however, the father of the groom may share the cost and responsibility of hosting the rehearsal dinner with the bride and groom and her parents. It is generally up to the bride and groom as to how much the father of the groom will have to contribute to the rehearsal dinner. The father of the groom may also be asked to give a toast, either at the rehearsal dinner, the wedding reception or both. He may also be asked to stand in the receiving line, welcoming guests and making introductions, and to take part in the couples first dance, cutting in on the brides father to dance with the bride. As mentioned earlier, the duties of the father of the bride and the father of the groom vary according to the bridal couples wishes. In some weddings, for example, the father of the groom escorts the groom down the aisle, while the father of the bride helps light the Unity candle or reads a passage of scripture. Whatever duties you are assigned, try to take them in stride and carry out the bride and grooms wishes with a smile! * * *

words and you definitely dont like speaking in public. The last time you gave a speech was 10 years ago in your college speech class. Relax. Making a toast is not as hard as you might think. Just follow these tips and youre sure to do well. Although it might be more to your liking, standing up and mumbling, Congratulations, just wont do. Your toast should be at least three to four minutes long, so youre definitely going to have to put some thought into it. Most toasts generally consist of four parts, a purpose, a thank you, a personal story or two, and the toast itself. The first and second parts are easy. All you need to do is introduce yourself, explain your relationship to the groom, indicate that you are there to offer your congratulations to the couple and thank the wedding hosts. The third part is a bit trickier. You will need to get more personal and tell a story or two that reveals something about the couple. Once you get through this phase, the fourth part is a breeze. You simply wrap up the toast by offering your congratulations and best wishes to the couple. Now that you are more familiar with the basic parts of a toast, you can start to compose yours. Try to keep what you have to say brief but meaningful. Theres nothing worse than listening to a 20minute speech full of

anything negative. Dont kid around and call the groom a slob. Negative remarks, no matter if they are said in jest or not, are not a good way to commemorate a wedding day. Once youve written your toast, invite a friend over and deliver it to them. Get their feedback and take their suggestions seriously. Make any

insignificant ramblings. Use examples to back up your remarks. Dont just say, The couple is great together, and leave it at that. Tell a story that illustrates how well suited the two are for each other. Be specific and keep your audience in mind. Identify the woman you keep referring to as the grooms aunt and steer clear of inside jokes. Not everyone will be privy to them. Keep the tone of your toast light and refrain from saying revisions necessary and then practice it often. Practice in front of the mirror and in front of your friends and family. Use note cards if you need them, and if people seem to have a hard time hearing you, see if you can have a microphone available at the reception. With careful deliberation and practice, you can make a toast that everyone will appreciate and remember for years to come.
