Trip # 1: Frying Pan Farm Park, Herndon, Virginia

Frying Pan Park, a working demonstration farm, preserves a piece of Fairfax County’s rural heritage, and recreates the
era of 1920—1950, when dairy farms blanketed the landscape. Greet the friendly farm animals, take a wagon ride, or
watch the farm hands at work. In addition to ―Kidwell Farm‖ main farmhouse and barns, you will see the dairy, smoke-
house, corn cribs, chicken house, ―outhouse‖, the Old Floris Schoolhouse, circa 1911, Moffitt Blacksmith Shop, circa
1917, and the Antique Equipment Shed that houses horse-drawn and mechanized equipment, including several early
1900 Fordson, John Deere, and Farmall tractors maintained in working condition. The Frying Pan Country Store offers
locally grown farm fresh produce, baked goods, and potted herbs. The Visitor Center, a converted 1890’s dairy barn, has
information, brochures and restrooms. Bring spending money to purchase lunch at a nearby restaurant. Wear comfortable
clothing and walking shoes. The park is not wheelchair accessible.
Date: Thursday, September 8, 2011 Time: 8:00 a.m.—4:00 p.m.
Meet at Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Avenue. Bus pick up at Franklin Apartments, Mapleview Apart-
ments, and Victory Tower only. Registration is required. Registration begins on 9/1/11 at 8:30 a.m. Call (301) 891-
7280 to pre-register, then fill out form by 9/7/11 (registration ends) or earlier.
No cost. Admission to the park is free. Wagon rides $3 per person.

Trip # 2: Black Hills Regional Park/Pontoon Ride/Picnic— Boyds, Maryland

Join us for a naturalist-led tour aboard the Kingfisher (pontoon) boat to experience the beautiful
scenery and wildlife of the 505-acre Little Seneca Lake. The Kingfisher can accommodate a
wheelchair (with advance notice). Bring your lunch and join your friends for an old-fashioned
picnic by the lake. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, bring a light jacket, it may be chilly on
the water. Don’t forget the sunscreen.

An Active Summer of Fun!

Summer Mini-trip #1: Miniature Golf at Bohrer Park on June 29

Anna, Gloria and Anne walked their way up, down, and around Bohrer Park’s 18 hole miniature golf course in Gaithersburg, Mary-
land. The weather was beautiful for this first active mini-trip of the summer. Anna, who never golfed before, mini or otherwise, com-
pleted the course in first place. She achieved three ―hole-in-one‖ shots! Great job, Anna! Photos by Paula Lisowski

Summer Mini-trip #2: Duck Pin Bowling at White Oak Lanes on July 20

Gloria, Anna, Susan and Lovina knocked down pins, kept score and enjoyed this fun activity. Susan bowled for the first time ever.

National Night Out (sponsored by the Takoma Park Police Department) on August 2

Jennifer, Susan, Olive, Monica, Paula, and many others had a great night out with their friends at Piney Branch Elementary School.
