n Harvest Festival officials select princess, queen
Angela Gray, Kaitlyn Geers, and Kailey Grospin, The evening was a success. Maureen Baker, the pageant hostess, asked each of the princess applicants what she would do and where she would live if she were a real princess. Autumn McCoy, selected as the 2011 Princess, said that she would live in a big house, watch TV, and do whatever she wanted. She would also have a fish named Sleepy who would sleep all day. The queen candidates were interviewed by pageant judges, Representative Rick Outman, Montcalm County Clerk Kristin Millard, and attorney Jessica Wood. Each candidate also gave a presentation explaining why she wanted to represent Howard City as Harvest Festival Queen. Kailey Grospin was selected 2011 Harvest Festival Queen. Kailey describes herself as a very outgoing individual who stands out in a crowd and is not influenced by others. The evenings photo memories were captured by local photographer, Tina Brecker, music was provided by Howard Wilson and Todd Zamarippa. The queen and court participate in Howard City activities throughout the year. In past years, the girls have served as judges for the local businesses scarecrow contest at Harvest Fest and for the Winterfest sculptures, helped out at Art in the Park, served at the librarys Father/ Daughter Teas, as well as participating in several area parades. Please join us on Saturday, September 17, for lots of fun at Howard Citys Harvest Festival.

Getting in step for the school year

Newaygo High School band students attended Band Camp at Lake Superior State University the week of July 25, 2011. The students boarded the bus on Sunday, July 25 at 6:30 a.m. and headed for Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, for another intense week of rehearsals to prepare them for this years marching season. Upon arrival in Sault Ste. Marie, the students unloaded the trailer and unpacked into their assigned rooms. Lunch was served in the Universitys cafeteria. This was followed by music rehearsal/sectionals and field rehearsal. After three hours of rehearsals and sectionals, the students had dinner. Afterwards it was back to field rehearsal. The days that followed included a wakeup call at 6 a.m., breakfast at 7 a.m., field rehearsal at 8 a.m., sectionals at 10:30 a.m., lunch being served at 11:45, mandatory down time in rooms at 12:30 p.m., music rehearsal at 1:15 p.m., refreshments at 2:50 p.m., field rehearsal at 3:10 p.m., dinner at 5 p.m., full band rehearsal at 6 p.m., evening activities at 9 p.m., everyone to rooms at 10:30 p.m., and lights out at 11 p.m. The students were treated to pool time on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and a cookout with activities at 7:30 p.m. Field rehearsal is the learning of steps to the formations that the viewers see from the sidelines. The

steps are then added in with the music to make beautiful formations. The students were given lanyards to hold their notes in assisting them with their placement on the field. Sectionals is where each individual section: a) trumpets, b) clarinets, c) flutes, d) the pit, e) drum line, f) color guard, g) french horns, h) alto saxophones, and i) trombones, baritones and tuba of the marching band get together in

groups and work on drill, tune or practice fundamentals. The students then take what they learn in sectionals to music rehearsal, where all marching students get together and work on the music as a group. On Friday the students had wakeup call at 6 a.m., breakfast at 7 a.m., field rehearsal at 8 a.m., ate lunch at 11:40 a.m., loaded the bus immediately afterwards and were on the road home for Newaygo by 12:30

p.m. The students arrived back at the high school in time for a 7:15 p.m. warm-up and performance at 7:45 p.m. at Newaygo High School. A special thank you goes out to Sue Cornell for making all the arrangements to pull another successful band camp together, all the parents who donated items for camp, to the following chaperones for helping band camp run smoothly and effortlessly: Bruce and

Deb Iwema, Frank Janusz, Christine Shand, Colleen Ryman, Jim Harrington, Ron Barr, Harold Harper and Sally Garvin, and to the following instructors for working with our students: Andy Broekhuizen, Jill Swanson, Lacie Hoag, Megan Garvin, Jamie DeVoe, Kyle Morse, Tori Mundwiler, Danielle and Nick. This years performances will be led by Drum Majors Tyler Franks and Devin Flint.

Russell & Karen Hansen - Grand Marshals 2011

Russell was born in 1922 in Langston. He married Louise Poulsen in 1941. They started their life together in Langston and for a short time in Howard City before moving to the farm in Trufant. A daughter, Karen, was born in 1954. The Hansens farmed with all the traditional farm animals. Russ also worked in a Greenville factory, retiring in 1985. Louise passed away in 1995, following a nine year illness. The cattle are gone, but he still has his beloved horses, three half lingers and a quarter horse. They maintain two gardens every year, vegetable and ower. Following graduation from Lakeview High School, Karen became an LPN, working for twelve and a half years in that capacity, but decided she would go back to school and she received her RN status. She is now retired. In 1985, they went to Denmark. Karen loved the country and wanted to learn the language. So in 1996, she returned and spent ve months learning to speak Danish. All totalled she has been to Denmark sixteen times. She taught Danish Conversational Classes and entertained us at a previous Trufant Jubilee Queens Pageant. They are members of the Langston Church and Trufant Area Chamber of Commerce. We are very proud to honor them as they represent Trufant, for this 33rd annual Jubilee celebrations, September 2011.

You Are What You Eat

Every part of our physical body comes from the earth. We are 60 to 80 percent water. The rest of the body is made up of physical elements and compounds that come from the ground we walk on. So we should take care of the earth. Our food comes from minerals, plants, and animals. Plants combine water and minerals from the earth and energy from the sun to produce the plant itself. The plant parts, seeds, owers, stems, fruit, roots, tubers, and sap have been used for food forever. Some animals eat the plant parts and then we eat the animal parts, muscle, organs, etc for a food source for ourselves. That is why it is called a food chain. We can manufacture most of the components of our structural body, but some parts must come in through our diet. These needed compounds are called essential. Therefore, we see the names essential vitamins, essential fatty acids, essential amino acids, and so forth. When you see that term, it means we cannot make that material in our body and we must have it in our food. If we do not, deciency diseases like scurvy (lack of vitamin C) and hypothyroid goiter (lack of iodine) will develop. In the past, deciency diseases were much more common. Today we know more about these things and we can supplement with vitamins, minerals, and fortied foods. One big problem we face is toxicity in our foods. Many food manufacturers use preservatives and additives to extend the shelf life of their product. Last week I saw bread with a 19 day shelf-life. That bread must be loaded with something powerful to mummify it like that. The FDA requires these chemicals and compounds to be within a certain safety range. That, in itself, is very good. And, if we had only one or two additives in our dietary intake each day we would be ne. But many foods that we eat every day all carry the allowable level of toxin. These, then, become cumulative and the net effect is that each day we take in an unusual amount of toxic substances. Some of these we can deal with and get rid of them through our normal channels of elimination, bowel, kidney, skin, and lungs. Some of the toxins we cannot eliminate and then we sequester or hide them in body fat to keep them from harming more vital tissues. This is one reason some people have a problem eliminating unwanted pounds. Eventually these accumulations will cause damage to some of our systems. Our body is no different than anything else we build. The quality of the ingredients determines the quality of the nal product. If you want a beautiful garden around your home you will prepare the soil, buy nice shrubs and owers and eliminate the weeds. We cannot expect a nice garden spot if we plant weeds and do not take care of things. We must start with good pure raw material and do our best to cleanse out any toxins that do get in. That way we have the best chance at a long, healthy, happy life. So do your best to eat organically grown food and avoid the toxins. (Next week, You Eat What You Are). Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

NEED A NEW HOUSE? HOW MUCH CAN YOU BORROW?

What is your normal debt? Start by understanding what your normal debt is. The average amount owed by the average person hit record levels in the last ten years, according to the online data gatherer eHow, in February of 2011. In 2010 alone, American consumers owed a total of $2.4 trillion, compared with $13 trillion owed by the United States government. But Americans make more relative income than the U.S. government. That means that we should be able to make our monthly payments even when the government cant. But in 2010, the average personal debt, including home purchase loans, rose to almost $52,000.00. Some economic studies show the average American owing on up to thirteen credit cards. Americans normal debt is anything but normal. Too much debt? The home loan lender evaluates the borrowers individual normal debt as the rst step. Gather up all your monthly statements. Identify each credit card payment you make, other consumer (car, 4-wheeler, boat) loan payments you make, and your current home mortgage payment. Determine income. Include wages, salaries, miscellaneous earnings, bonuses, overtime, bank interest, alimony, investment income, child support, and trust payments (if youre so lucky). Determine your ratio of debt over income. So, for example, if you pay out $1,500 a month on your current mortgage loan, car payments, and credit cards, and you earn $3,000 per month before taxes (thats your gross income), your debt-to-income ratio is 1500/3000 or 1 to 2. An easier way to refer to it is 50% of your monthly gross income goes to pay your monthly debts now.

Theres debt standard in Michigan: For a new home loan application in 2011, you can almost bet youll need a 20% down payment if your debt-toincome ratio is 35% or less. Youll need more of a down payment if your ratio is above 35%. To gure what amount you qualify for, multiply your monthly gross income by your debt-to-income ratio. For example, 50% of $3,000 per month income is $1,500. Subtract your monthly credit card payments and consumer loan payments to get what the bank believes you can afford on your monthly mortgage. If youre paying $600 per month on your credit cards and car loan, that leaves you $900 to make a house payment. The lender, or any ammortizer program (on your computer, or ask the bank, or go online) does the reverse calculation for you, using $900 as the monthly payment, and, say, 5% as the lenders mortgage interest rate, to determine what amount of a mortgage loan youll qualify for. How to improve that ratio? Bad ratio? Pay off your debts. Call each credit card company (the number is on the back of your card) and ask them to lower your cards interest rate. Point out that you make your payments on time. Be polite, but insistent. Call again and ask every three months. Sell that car if the monthly payment is over $275. And if you cant pay them off in a few months, stop using your credit cards altogether. Or youll be a renter forever.
