What to observe 1. Listening- people who are good conversationalist are good listener. - Some people do not listen coz theres so much noise going on inside them like threats, insecurity, premature judgement, an authoritarian attitude- blocks to communication 2. Non-verbal signals to discern not only orally but what is show by the eyes, facial expression, gestures, postures and mannerisms, a smile, a smirk, or a clenched fist. These may hold meanings that are not relayed verbally. 3. Directness not to resort to hazy suggestions or innuendoes that contaminate the message, which could prove disastrous in any form of communication. 4. Clarity communication should be concise and clear, verbosity and decorative words cause much distraction and confusion. Enhancing Husband and Wife Communication Communication is the lifeblood of a relationship, is vital to the closeness between husband and wife. a. communicating non-verbally to speak without words through gestures, postures and facial expression. A way of affirming ones spouse through a simple wink, a smile, or a pat on the back. b. communicating as an adult they must find time to find intellectual stimulation and newness. To gather ideas from their work/profession and interests. c. Communicating as children- the time to play. Retaining the child in its playfulness, creativity, wonder, laughter, spontaneity, trust, adventure and newness. These are essential for maintaining the vibrancy and fun of a relationship. Personality and its role in Christian maturity Personality- is a mysterious quality separate from a persons behavior, a unique individuality, a soul, spirit, or spirituality that lies behind and expressed through ones actions or attitude. Classification of personality a. Omnibus all of the processes/ activities which the individual is capable of ( interests, abilities, and habits) b. Integrative incorporate the various characteristics of the individual c. Totality/ Hierarchical emphasize the integration of the various aspects that make up personality d. Adjustment emphasize the persons characteristic patterns of adjustment. Ones character or personality may be affected by:

D. Frame of Referance This refers to the individuals Philosophy of life which is the composite of the integrated and synthessized system of the individuals perceptions, motivation,, traits, sentiments and values. This is utilized by the individual in judging his acts, words and thoughts. E. Structural Element The intrinsic forces or properties found in the personality of an individual which to a great extent serve as the determinants of the behavior or performance of people. These elements are as follows: traits, sentiments and values FACTORS AFFECTING PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT 1. Heredity- the transmission of traits from parents to offsprings through the genes. - from parents, both sets of grandparents we inherit basic personality traits: physical, emotional, intellectual qualities. 2. Environment- includes all the forces that affect or influence man. - persons are continuously being conditioned by the people around us. This may be visual or verbal, positive or negative in nature. Education associated with what person has learned not only from school but more importantly from his parents in the home. It is important to remember that the home is an ideal setting for selfeducation. Grace- which is naturally rooted in our faith. Moved by grace man turns toward god and away from sin. - Sanctifying grace is the gratuitous gift of his life that God makes to us. The grace that makes one holy. It is in our cooperation with grace that one can be transformed to be a better person and a Christian. OBSTACLES TO PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT Immaturity failure to make the transition to a mature stage manifested by hyperactivity, impulsiveness, short attention span, silly clowning, daydreaming, messy, sloppy, poorly used time, self centeredness and overdependence. Lack of discipline- inability to control ones self and thus plans are not carried out. Non- Acceptance of Responsibility- failure to carry oput assigned tasks or duties. Inability to accept reality- setting very idealistic goals inproportionate to ones capacity. 5. SIN- greatest obstacle which break the bond of mans relationship with God.

Any form of creativity that directly contradicts this sacred reality involves an essential degradation. Sex is morally acceptable only in marriage. Its main purpose is to procreate, raise children in a stable monogamous family. Premarital Sex: Why wait until marriage? According to the Declaration on Sexual Ethics, PMS is not lawful, even if many today claim that they have a right to them at least when there is a firm intention to marry. The Christian doctrine states that every genital act must be within the framework of marriage. Kinds of love It is said that love is not primarily a relationship with a person: it is an attitude, an orientation of character which determines the relatedness of a person to the world as a whole. Sensible love- which man share with animals, is geared to satisfying the needs of biological life. Rational love- rooted in mans spirituality and openness to being. It is response to worth. concupiscent love-seeks the good that will perfect him benevolent love- seeks that which will perfect the beloved Eros- when one focuses on himself Agape- when one looks to others and devotes himself to their fulfillment. Mature and Immature love Mature love is is altruistic-gives time, affection, energy without considering what he will receive in return. is freeing is resilient is honest is spiritual is empathetic is strengthening The Practice of Love This is best described in 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 Love is patient and kind, is not jealous or conceited or proud; love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs. Love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth, love never gives up and its faith, hope and patience never fails. Looking for the Significant Other Factors affecting mate selection 1. geographic and residential propinquity 2. share cultural similarities 3. pressure from environment (family, friends) 4. personal beliefs Qualities to consider in choosing a lifetime partner 1. physical-partners should be healthy, hereditary health problems should be considered before considering engagement. 2. psychological- mentally handicapped persons are regarded as incapable of giving sufficient marital consent 3. ethical qualities- truthfulness, purity of mind, temperance, frugality, modesty, loyalty and honesty. 4. religious- profession of the same religious belief must be sought. Sociology Notes Friendship- a deeper relationship among friends that goes beyond sharing of something in common. It creates a special bond between people based on a sharing of common efforts and experiences of joy, sorrow and fear. Purpose: we seek friendship to fulfill five basic needs: need for affection, self esteem, security, freedom, and equality. 1. affection- people need the love and care from others, there is the tender feeling of emotional attachment towards a person. 2. self esteem- friends are those who will support you and enhance you to succeed. 3. security- when youre down and troubled and need a helping hand, your friend will be there beside you. 4. freedom- a friend will never restrict you of things you want to do, he will set you free. 5. equality- in friendship, all are equal. Kinds of friendship 1. associative friendship- due to circumstances you become friends, includes relationships with colleagues at work, school etc. 2. receptive friendship- any set of people whose relationship is based on relational difference of complementary roles in which one is the giver and the other, receiver. 3. reciprocal friendship- partners are in mutual term, there is a commitment specially to their interpersonal relationship, they will switch back and forth between giving and receiving roles. Eg: marital relationship, kinship, family ties. True Friendship- a true friend is someone who is willing to give, sacrifice and break ones self in half for the loved one. Qualities: 1. must be morally helpful to both parties- those that will lead you to do and be good. 2. there must be a genuine basis of agreementthe part of friendship in which the treasury of thoughts, feelings and dreams are off limits to others. 3. mutual love is characterized by spirit of sacrifice. 4. must maintain each others identity. 5. must not measure time and distance. Obstacles of true friendship 1. jealousy- it is a learned response determined by cultural attitude. It is a result of insecurity and dependency. 2. competition and ambition- because of thinking only for yourself, you become selfcentered, you forgot the other person. 3. lack of awareness- there is always a strong tendency to take for granted a friend. 4. lack of communication 5. irreconciliable differences Dating- it is the occasional spending time together by a boy and a girl for the purpose of companionship, of getting acquainted, for entertainment, usually without any intention of marriage

It is an educational process affording opportunity of being acquainted with persons of the opposite sex with social opportunities and their demands and restrictions surrounding the activities. It is a kind of a testing laboratory where one learns human changes and sex differences, and a communication workshop for the persons involved PURPOSE 1. Enjoying merely/having a good time with what another person provides (primary purpose) 2. Acquainting oneself with the temperaments, characteristics, and interests of a fairly large number of members of the opposite sex(ultimate purpose) 3. One can decide whether each one can commit himself/herself to the other for life by getting to know the other well. STAGES A. Infatuation stage- when sex and romance are the key elements that often make the intellect loose control; Thrill and feelings are strongest; sex= love; decision to marry is very dangerous. B. Objectivity/Honesty- marked by greater awareness of relationship and sexuality; both relates with one another with a high degree of openness; leads to the discovery that the other is not attracted to the other as they both believe before, Discovery of the beauty of the other and deepens that beauty in other, hence, growth together, adjustments to each other; dreams are compromised. C. Altruism- marked by a focus on allowing the other person to grow and here a significant willingness to share both joys and pains to the othr and with the other; results to the growth of both in pain, patience, warmth, freedom, Strength, honesty and pleasures. KINDS OF DATING 1. Group dating- this happens when group of girls agreed to meet a group of boys to share certain activities like going to a movie, picnic etc. The primary stage where young people interact to fellow teenagers( without the watchful eyes of the parents) and get along with them. 2. Double dating- this involves 2 couples. There could be a lot of talk, a lot of laughter but the conversation Never get serious. 2. Pair Dating- there comes a time a person get tired of dating different persons and he/she feels the need to settle for a permanent dating partner. This happen when an individual feels that he/she has found the characters he/she would want for a company. This is considered as stepping

Some individual put a different color to that friendly atmosphere in dating.insted of developing themselves young people often get so impulsive and goes all the way down. A misconception among the young that dating and sexual intimacies go hand in hand. WHAT TO CONSIDER WITH A DATE 1. Character- when everyone hopes that his/her dating partner is an options of good breeding. 2. Physical appearance have a pleasing appearance, well groomed, free from bodyodor. 3. Financial capabilities- no one enjoys a date with nothing on his pocket. It provides the dating partner some sense of security. 4. parental approval- it is essential tht their opinions are considered since it could help one in providing a feeling of security while dating particularly if it is the first time and one is still dependent on them. 5. Public Opinion- what people say of your partner can influence ones cxhoice of partner. 6. Personal Choice- it is essential that one should go out with someone he personally likes/ feels comfortable with. He must not be compelled to go out with someone he does not like. It is not a matter of delecadeza to reject an invitation, but a matter of fairness to your partner and more to oneself. KINDS OF DATING 1. Old Shoe familiarity- it is characterized by dates with old friends who are considered as comrades, with very little or no thrill or excitement being in love. 2. Glamour dates- purely to date somebody who is well known in the campus; a personality who happens to be the envy of ones eyes. Just dating somebody popular is enough. 3. Blind date- known as pick-up dates. It is rather scary in a sense since it leaves you wondering how your date will look. 4. Growing friendship date- provides the couple a chance to get to know each other better. This kind of date doesnt usually lead the couple to the altar but instead, to something that might be the basis of a lifelong friendship. 5. group date- it provides the group deeper acquaintances and closer socialization. It is an easy and natural approach to dating. It fascilitates opportunities for acquiring social skills and reduce anxieties of being alone with your date. 6. Steady dating- it allows you to go out with a permanent partner. In this kind of date you Become committed to your partner. It is rather more intimate in nature, it affords you and your partner to be at ease with each others company.

To him it is about the talk about dates that counts. He dates for impression and Prestige. 2. Pageant Dater- this one prefers big events, big parties, shows, any place where there is crowd. He is not comfortable being alone, afraid of personal communication and commitment. 3. Panic Dater- this is usually a girl, afraid of being left out of anything, thinks it is the end of the world if a dateless weekend comes up. Dates anybody just to get out of the house. 4.Body Dater- this one would rather kiss and touch than talk. He is exploiter, has his own strategies to get something out of the girl. He camouflages early maneuvers with good manners, then moves in when the victim relaxes. Watch out for this one, girls. 5.Egophobe- is one who is afraid to sk because he anticipates he will be turned down. He is a defeatist, a pessimist, believes no else will have him. 6. the trader is also a body dater-he expects affection as his natural right, his reward in return for the date, This one also bears watching. 7. Car dater- This boy just wants to show his car around, the girl is incidental. This holds the other way around. The girl who choose he date according to the car he drives. One important thing to remember dating provides a socially appropriate outlet for Heterosexual interest during a period when adult status is not attainable. Look for a date that will help you grow as a person rather than just anyone who is ready, willing and available.
