MTSU Department of Mass Communications EMC 3130 Video Field Production Request for Proposal (RFP) for Video

Production Project Project Overview: The final video project for EMC 3130 should be designed to: Illustrate technical and aesthetic video concepts and approaches learned throughout the semester; Present technical and aesthetic challenges to the student producer/director; Exemplify an area of interest and/or passion; Reflect enthusiasm on the part of the student producer/director; Project Requirements: Student Producer/Director requirements: The student (the Video Producer) will be expected to select all elements of the video, which may include, but are not limited to, scripting, voicing, shooting, lighting, graphics, editing, music, and delivery. The Video Producer is required to handle production, direction, videography and editing first hand. The Video Producer will be required to secure its own production facilities and equipment. Editing facilities and software will be provided. Video requirements: It is recommended that the video be no more than 10 minutes, although exceptions will be permitted where the content dictates a longer running time. Unless justified creatively, all images should be in focus and properly exposed. Any editing software may be used. Final Cut Pro will be provided by the department. Deliverables: The Video Producer will deliver the finished product as a QuickTime movie to the instructors MTSU drop box by 6PM ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2011. The video file should be labeled with the Producers last name, followed by the Producers first initial, followed by underscore, followed by FINAL for Final Project. Each video should begin with exactly 15 frames of black, followed by 10 seconds of attribution, followed by 15 frames of black. The attribution image should be white letters on a black background with the following information: EMC 3130, Spring 2011, Producers Name, Camera make and model. Ownership: The Video Producer will retain all legitimate rights to his/her work.

Grading Criteria: Proposals will be graded on thoroughness, attention to detail and instructions, and clarity of message. Projects will be graded on the following criteria: Focus, Exposure, Framing (for effect and for clarity of information), lighting (whether natural/existing or artificial), editing (both mechanics and aesthetics, i.e. pace and effect), clarity of story or message, sound and music, appropriateness of technique to subject, creativity, and overall impact. Proposal Requirements and How to Submit: Proposals must include: 1. A clear description, in one paragraph, of the final project. Imagine someone has already seen the video you have in your head; how would they describe it? You may include one reference to an existing film, video, commercial, etc. which shares similarities with your proposed production. 2. In one or two sentences how will this video reflect techniques or approaches you have learned this semester? 3. In one or two sentences, what techniques will be most important to your project? 4. In one or two sentences, what will you be accomplishing in this project that you have not accomplished previously? 5. In one or two sentences, how will this project challenge you as a video maker. 6. What city were you born in? 7. List the equipment you intend to use. You may include DIY equipment as well as low budget or amateur equipment. 8. In one paragraph describe how this project connects to your life, career goals, and interests. Deliver the proposal via email to: ebowen@mtsu.edu by October 25, 2011.
