Job said something so profound that few of us have ever grasped it. (Job 42:1-6 NIV) Then Job replied to the LORD: I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted. You asked, Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge? Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. You said, Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me. My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes. I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee I cant help thinking that I am where Job was. I have heard of God with the hearing of the ear, but my eye has not seen him. Dont get me wrong. I believe in God, but so did Job. I obey God, but so did Job. I pray to God, but so did Job. There is no act of righteousness that I have done that Job would not have done, and more. And that means that I am squarely where Job was. And that also means I very likely share his vulnerability.
I want to tell you where this first began to dawn on me and what I think it means. I was reading Revelation 4, where John describes what he saw in the manner of the day. He put all the ingredients into a long paragraph. He summarizes what he saw. Let me tell you how I think he saw it. John fell into a vision. And in vision, he found himself in a place that was nothing like he had ever seen before. What dominated the scene for him was a throne with 24 seats arranged in a semicircle before it. There was a man seated on each of these seats with a golden crown on his head. To John, they appeared to be elders of one kind or another. That was best he could do in describing them. Also before the throne, there were seven flames burning, which John describes as the seven spirits of God. And here am I, fool that I am, I thought there was only one Spirit of God. John also saw four creatures that were full of eyes before and behind. It seems kind of creepy, but dont lose track of the fact that this is a vision. As John watched, the creatures sang out: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And out of the throne there appeared lightning and a crack of thunder. There appeared on the throne, one who John could only describe in terms of precious stones. And with his appearance, there was a greenish halo, like an iris, all around the throne. Instantly, the 24 elders threw down their crowns and sang out: Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. And threw themselves down before him who sat on the throne. What I wondered as I read this account and tried to visualize it, was, What went through the minds of the 24 elders as they did this? Was one of them thinking to himself, Lets see, was it sing this song and then throw down my crown? Or was it throw down the crown and then sing? Could I assume that they did what they were supposed to do, that they followed an order of service? I dont think so. Taking God Seriously - Should we take God seriously? It seems a silly question, but a lot of people dont take God seriously. We are dealing with someone who, in the blink of an eye, can create a universe 13 or 14 billion light years across. God claims he owns it all. He doesnt need anything from us. So what does God want from us? These two messages (SC76-1CD) on one CD (with A God Forgotten, above) compliment this months FREE offer, Close to God.
Beacon of Freedom - Weve witnessed, in a little over a generation, the swiftest advance of freedom in
the 250 year story of democracy, then-President Bush said in a speech. Historians in the future will reflect on an extraordinary, undeniable fact: Over time, free nations grow stronger and dictatorships grow weaker . . . . Liberty is both the plan of Heaven for humanity, and the best hope for progress here on Earth . . . . The advance of freedom is the calling of our time. This Born to Win program will help you determine whether these statements are true.
