You may not have heard of Multimatic (unless youre in the auto parts business or big-time motorsports such as Formula One and top-flight endurance racing), but it is about to make its mark in the world of high-tech supercars. Engineered and constructed by the Markham, Ont.-based firm, which happens to build the entire rolling chassis for Aston Martins upcoming One-77 as well as the 2010 Mustang Boss 302R race car, the de Macross GT1 is the true-to-life dream of Jahong Hur. Penned by the South Korean entrepreneur (Hur is second son to the CEO of GS Holdings, an engineering and hospitality conglomerate) and powered by a supercharged Roush Yates 5.4-litre Ford V8 rumoured to pump out 830 horsepower, the GT1 you see here is the first driveable prototype, brought from design board to rolling metal in less than 14 months by Multimatic. Bristling with motorsports technology, the GT1 incorporates the worlds first fully hydraulic anti-roll bar and another nifty tidbit that lowers the ride height (for superior handling), while at the same time raising the suspensions spring rate (and not just the easily adjustable damping) so that all that expensive, hand-beaten aluminum bodywork doesnt grind into the tarmac. The chassis is reminiscent of the McLaren-built SLR Mercedes, with a main carbon-fibre tub connecting to extruded aluminum suspension anchor points. The de Macross will no doubt be just as fast as the quadruple-turbocharged Veyron, a good thing since its likely to cost about the same as that fancy Bugatti. Hur has penned numerous other designs that he promises will cost less than the $1-million-plus price tag of the GT1.
