interested and enthusiastic about learning new ways to be helpful and to be a positive role model in the dojang.

OUR PROMISE TO YOU!

The very best way for you to learn more about the martial arts and about yourself is to teach. You will be amazed by how much you will learn as a martial artist by demonstrating technique and poomse to other students. We promise to help you and give you guidance so you will be constantly building new leadership and teaching skills. Not only will you become a better martial artist and a better role model as a member, but you will also get a great feeling of accomplishment and reward from being part of a team, and for being able to help and encourage others students.

This manual will explain some of the basic requirements and duties of the SWAT position. It will also explain some of the policies that our Leadership Team must follow in particular areas. Please read this manual over carefully with your parents. Both you and a parent should sign the last page and return it as soon as possible so that we know you have read the manual and understand it. If you have questions, you should ask us. If you do not follow the requirements and policies in this manual, you may lose the privilege to be a part of our Leadership Team.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

How do I get nominated to the Team? The following are the general conditions that must be met before you can be eligible for selection to the Team:

1. Age You must be at least 10 years old. 2. Rank You must be a Blue Belt, or higher. 3. BBC Member You must be a member in good standing of the Black Belt Club. 4. Positive Role Model You must demonstrate that you are a positive role model, both inside and outside the AMA. This means you need to be honest, courteous and responsible. You must also show a good work ethic by maintaining good grades in school, attending AMA classes regularly, and staying motivated to improve as a martial artist. 5. Knowledge of Material You must memorize and be proficient in all material up to your belt level.

6. Tests You must pass all curriculum tests as they arise.

Note: These are guidelines for SungSahNim, not hard and fast rules. In special circumstances, a student who does not meet a condition above may be selected to the Team at SungSahNims sole discretion. (As an example, a student who may not be ten years old but is exceptionally responsible or mature for his or her age may be selected to the team.)

TIME COMMITMENTS

How much time will it require to be a Team Member? We know you are busy with school, family, your own martial arts training, and other extra-curricular activities. You and your family will want to know how much time you must commit to being a Team Member. The following are the minimum time requirements to be a SWAT member:

1. One Class Per Week You will assist the Instructors in one regularly scheduled class per week. A specific class will be assigned to you that works with your schedule. Leadership Team members need to be in uniform and prepared to assist for five minutes before and five minutes after the assigned class.

2. Leadership Team Meetings As a general rule, a meeting for SWAT members will be held one Saturday per month for approximately one hour to an hour and a half. There may occasionally be an additional meeting in a particular month or a special seminar or workshop - if something important needs to be covered. members are expected to regularly attend these meetings in order to remain on the Leadership Team. 3. School Support While attendance is not mandatory, we strongly encourage our members to support school-sponsored events whenever family schedules permit. As a member of the Leadership Team, you have a greater responsibility to support the Academys students and to be a positive role model for them. You can encourage the students you help teach in class and promote school spirit by participating in and supporting the Academys extracurricular events.

ORIENTATION AND TRIAL PERIOD

How do I get started? Once you have been selected to the SWAT Team, you will be assigned to a more experienced member of the Leadership Team for an orientation meeting. At this meeting, you will have a general review of this manual and will be able to ask any questions that come to mind. Many members will already have experience on the Leadership Team if they are being promoted from a STORM Team position. If you have already been a Member, the orientation meeting will help you to understand how your duties will change as a Team member. If you have not been a member previously

and are starting out as a new Team member, you will also be shown at your orientation where things are, learn how to operate the stereo and be given some general tips to help you get started.

After you have had your orientation meeting, you will begin to assist in classes during your in-training trial period. This trial period generally lasts for approximately three months, although it can be longer if SungSahNim decides that additional time is needed. This in training trial period will give you and the Instructors a chance to see whether being a Team member is working out well for you. Once you have gotten comfortable with your new responsibilities and demonstrated an ability to handle them well during your trial period, you will be promoted from a member in training to a permanent member of our Leadership Team.

ABSENTEE POLICY

What happens if I cant make it to my assigned class? By agreeing to serve on the Leadership Team, you are making a commitment to assist in class once a week. Your Instructors count on you to be there to help. While it is very important that you attend your regularly assigned class on a consistent basis, the Academy understands that there may be occasions due to illness, vacations, or family scheduling that prevent you from assisting in your class. If this is the case, it is very important that you do two things:

1. You must notify the Academy as soon as possible of your inability to attend your class, and 2. You must make reasonable efforts to try and find another member to cover your class for you. (Attached to this manual is a Leadership Team Directory with phone numbers in case you need to contact another member of your team.)

THE RULE OF STRICT CONFIDENTIALITY

As a member, you are more than just a student now. You have greater responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is to keep private what you learn about the school or other students during Leadership Team meetings and in your role as a member. We call this Confidentiality, and it means that we respect privacy. It also means that under no circumstances will the Academy tolerate gossip among our Leadership Team members. For example, as a member, you may hear things that are not intended for the whole school to know. A student may be having a problem in class, or a personal matter may come up that we are trying to help solve. You may not share this information with your friends, or your classmates, or anyone other than the Leadership Team. This is to respect peoples feelings, and their privacy, and the integrity of the school. It helps us make the school a better place and it helps to protect our students from hurt feelings or embarrassment. If you break the rule of strict confidentiality, you will lose your privilege to be on the Leadership Team.

MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES

BEFORE CLASS

1. The Five Minute Rule: You should be dressed in uniform and ready to attend to your duties at least five minutes before class begins.

2. Sign In: Sign in on the Leadership Team attendance list.

3. The Meet and Greet Policy: When you arrive five minutes early, make sure you are seen out and about. Be pleasant and be sure to smile. Say hello to parents and say hello to your students. Acknowledge a Birthday. Welcome a student back who has been out sick, or on vacation. Show enthusiasm for the great class that is about to take place.

Seek out the new students! Remember when you were a White Belt, and be sure to go over and introduce yourself to the new students before class. Provide extra help to these students and go out of your way to make them feel comfortable in their new surroundings!

4. Help Students To Get Physically And Mentally Prepared For Class:

You and any other members assigned to the same class should work together to accomplish the following tasks:

.. Guide students to line up or sit quietly in resting stance before class

begins Be a calming influence before class begins.

.. Check to make sure none of the younger students need the bathroom or a drink before class begins.

.. Make sure your students uniforms are secure and that belts are tied properly and the knots are tight.

5. Help Keep the Dojang Neat and Clean:

Getting the students calm and ready for class is always your first priority as a team member, and the students should continue to be supervised until class officially starts. If the students are calmly in line or seated before class and someone on the Leadership Team is in charge of seeing that they remain that way, handle the following tasks or request the help of an available member to get them accomplished:

.. Help keep the warm-up room neat and the hallway clear of shoes, bags, etc. Shoes should be neatly on the shoe rack, and bags should be lined up neatly along the wall in the warm-up room.

.. Help keep the bathrooms neat and free of shoes and gear.

.. Encourage independence and responsibility Students should be encouraged whenever possible to be responsible for their personal

belongings and to show respect at all times for the dojang by not littering or leaving things where they dont belong. While you should help to keep the dojang neat and pitch in when necessary, this does not mean you should always clean up for the students. Everyone should learn to help keep the dojang neat and to be responsible for their own belongings.

.. If you see equipment out of place in the warm up room or the dojang (weapons, pads, bong-sul, etc.), take a moment to put in its correct place.

6. Cooperate And Coordinate With Other Members:

It is the goal of the Academy to have several team members assisting in the same class. It is important to cooperate and to coordinate with other assistants so that everyone works together as part of the Team to get the job done. members are learning to perform the same BEFORE CLASS DUTIES outlined above, but since you are at a higher level than the STORM members on the Leadership Team, you are in the best position to help the members and work with them to make sure everything runs smoothly before class. As a team member, you are a very important link in the teaching chain in between the members and the Assistant Instructor and Instructors. Get to know what members will be assigned to the same class as you. Be ready to offer your assistance to members and work in a cooperative effort with them to help get the students ready in as orderly and efficient a manner as possible. 7. Sparring Days:

One of your responsibilities will be to help students get their gear on and off as quickly and as quietly as possible on spar days. If the lesson plan indicates that it is a spar day, please check to make sure that the sign on the wall is green for a spar day. The lesson plan will indicate whether the students should gear up before class begins, or wait to put gear on until it is time to spar. As a general rule, the Dragon and Beginner Classes do not start class with their gear on, while the Intermediate and Advanced students do start class with their gear on. Unless the lesson plan or the Instructor indicates that you should do otherwise, follow this general rule. Encourage Independence: You should try and encourage students to get as much of their gear on and off by themselves as they can, as quickly and as quietly as possible. The younger and newer students will need more assistance from you than the older and more experienced ones. You should encourage the students to quietly help each other in putting on and taking off their chest protectors. DURING CLASS 1. Follow Instructions:

In class, you should always follow the specific instructions from the AI or Instructor who is teaching the class that day. Every class is different.
