Board of Advisers Strengthens Commitment to the PN

he partnership between the Philippine Navy (PN) and its stakeholders has been strengthened and reaffirmed once more as the PN Board of Advisers (BoA) convened for the third time this year, last 14 July 2011 at the 19th Hall, PN Golf Club (PNGC), Bonifacio Naval Station, Taguig City. VADM Alexander P Pama, the Flag Officer in Command, PN thanked the PN BoA for the persistent support that it has extended to the organization. Likewise, Dr. Jesus P. Estanislao, Chairperson of the PN BoA, reassured their commitment to be of assistance to the PN, through initiatives such as the Support Your Navy Foundation (SYNF). This assistance is geared towards the realization of the PNs vision crafted in the PN Strategic Sail Plan 2020. Maritime security issues concerning the West Philippine Sea were one of the focal points of the discussion. The Board said that this provides a golden opportunity for the PN to build its capability in order to perform its mandate and be duly recog-

nized as a strong and credible organization that every Filipino can truly be proud of. As such, the PN BoA decided to take on the role of providing the intellectual leadership that the PN and the entire country need in light of the pressing issues. The cluster updates, the arrival of BRP Gregorio del Pilar, and the Public-Private Partnership projects and efforts of the PN were also discussed during the meeting. Bacordo, Director of the Center for Naval Leadership and Excellence (CNLE) gave updates to the Board regarding the status of the PN Strategic Sail Plan 2020, specifically the status of the initiatives and milestones in the FOIC, PNs Balanced Scorecard. The three PN committees also presented their respective updates. For the Ways and Means Committee, LT Edwin German A Cordova of the Naval Resource Management Office updated the Board about the SYNF Fundraising Golf Tournament held last 23 July 2011 at PNGC. For the Maritime Coalition Committee (MCC), the presentation of LCOL Arturo G Rojas from the Office of the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff for Plans and Programs, O/N5, covered the

MCCs action items during the previous PN BoA Meeting last 29 April 2011 and the action items arising from the MCC meeting last 06 May 2011. COL Jesulito H Calimag from the Office of the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff for Civil Military Operations, O/N7, presented the proposed PN Briefing for Stakeholders, which shall be presented to stakeholders during visits of the PN and every possible venue to encourage participation and possible involvement. The Articles and By Laws of the Support Your Navy Foundation and the Board Resolution designating Dr. Jesus P. Estanislao as the Treasurer in Trust of the SYNF were likewise approved and seconded by the members of the Board who were present. (NPDLR)

BPI Shares Governance Best Practice During the 6th Leg of the PNGF
Mr. Aurelio R. Montinola III, President and CEO of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), graced the 6th Leg of the PN Governance Forum Series 2011 held last 10 July 2011 at the HPN Multi-purpose Hall, Naval Station Jose Andrada, Manila. At 160 years, BPI is the Philippines oldest commercial banking institution. It has been tested by various economic and political challenges that occurred in history. Yet these events did not deter the bank from rising beyond expectations. It was able to sustain its mark of excellence and innovation that made it one of the strongest and most profitable banks in the country. Exactly how BPI did this is what Mr. Montinola shared during the Forum. Speaking on the topic BPI: Sustaining Excellence Through Good Governance, he discussed the various best practices and innovations employed by the company to ensure sustainability, good governance and stakeholder satisfaction. Sustainability and governance always start with good people doing the right thing, Mr. Montinola said as he called the attention of the audience on the elements of sustainability. He said that any organization that aims for excellence only needs to concentrate on five things. First, it should pick good leaders. Second, it must walk its talk. Three, it must have clear goals and clear policies. Fourth is transparency and, lastly, accountability. He then emphasized that the measure of ones excellence is the level of satisfaction of its stakeholders its customers, partners, regulators, employees and shareholders. The value that BPI places on satisfying its stakeholders sets the tone for its strategies and innovations. He summarized BPIs best practices in a witty acrostic that spells NAVAL. Navy 2020: Strong and Credible

PN Participates in PGS Boot Camp
The PN participated in the Performance Governance System (PGS) Boot Camp last 1821 July at Hacienda Isabella, Cavite. CAPT Opiniano M Jayme Jr, Chief of Plans and Programs Division, O/J1; CNLE Staff, LT Laurence M Calimag and Ms. Jecka Mae R. de Castro as well as NDO staff ENS Analiza A Batao-ey and ENS Michelle D Tabugan represented the PN in this 4-day event. The PGS Boot Camp was organized and facilitated by the Institute for Solidarity in Asia (ISA) chaired by Dr. Jesus P. Estanislao. With the theme Governance Explorers: Setting out to discover the secrets of PGS success, this Boot Camp was designed to equip PGS partners with both technical knowledge and values for institutional transformation. It was also during this Boot Camp when the PNs experience in adopting the PGS was featured. Lastly, L is for Love our bank meaning, its personnel get to love and value the institution they are working for. Together, these best practices made BPI live up to its name truly it is the Bank of the Philippine Islands. BPIs success story on sustaining excellence throughout more than a century of existence is an inspiration to the Philippine Navy, which is also one of the oldest institutions in the country. At the same time, it is a challenge to examine where our organization is when it comes to the value we are giving to the people we are serving. (MCC)

CNLE conducts 7Habits Workshop to NCSC Class 70 The Center for Naval Leadership and Excellence facilitated the Leadership Module, featuring the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Signature Program, of the Naval Command and Staff Course Class 70 last 11-14 July 2011 at the Philippine Navy Golf Club, Bonifacio Naval Station, Taguig City. The Module equips the students with knowledge and values to prepare them for their responsibilities as future leaders and decision-makers of the Philippine Navy. It was facilitated by Ms. Aleja F Martinez, LT Edwin Cordova, LCDR Marissa Arlene Andres-Martinez and CAPT Giovanni Carlo J Bacordo.

SYNF holds Fundraising Golf Tournament The Philippine Navy together with the PN Board of Advisers successfully conducted the Support Your Navy Foundation Fundraising Golf Tournament last 23 July 2011 at the Philippine Navy Golf Club, Bonifacio Naval Station, Taguig City. It was participated in by 56 entities from the different sectors of the society including 29 private companies, 20 PMA/ NOQC classes, four individuals and three Government Owned and Controlled Corporations. The success of the Golf Tournament gave high hopes of generating the necessary funds for the Foundation, and at the same time reaffirming the support that the PN has from the different sectors of the Philippine society.
