At 160 years, BPI is the Philippines oldest commercial banking institution. It has been tested by various economic and political challenges that occurred in history. It was able to sustain its mark of excellence and innovation that made it one of the strongest and most profitable banks in the country. Exactly how BPI did this is what Mr. Montinola shared during the Forum. Speaking on the topic BPI: Sustaining Excellence Through Good Governance, he discussed the various best practices and innovations employed by the company to ensure sustainability, good governance and stakeholder satisfaction. Sustainability and governance always start with good people doing the right thing, Mr. Montinola said as he called the attention of the audience on the elements of sustainability. He said that any organization that aims for excellence only needs to concentrate on five things. First, it should pick good leaders. Second, it must walk its talk. He then emphasized that the measure of ones excellence is the level of satisfaction of its stakeholders its customers, partners, regulators, employees and shareholders. The value that BPI places on satisfying its stakeholders sets the tone for its strategies and innovations. He summarized BPIs best practices in a witty acrostic that spells NAVAL.
