In my six years teaching and consulting in China, many of my MBA and undergraduate students as well as business friends at different stages in their work history, have expressed confusion and uncertainty about how best to develop their careers or find that first job. Also, there is the fact of the Ant Tribe jobs are in China are in great demand and that to obtain a job today you must be able to stand out from your look-alike competition. As an employment preparation and career enrichment educator, I want to show you how and why my workshops/courses can help you or your clients find and get the job they love while improving their English and bringing increased meaning and self-worth into their lives. For all those employed in todays knowledge and global economy, to understand and communicate Who You Are and How You Are Uniquely Useful and enable the same for others, even from different cultures is critical to a successful career and personal life.

Who the Workshops Are For

My workshops are for Chinese adults using English as a Foreign Language who want to learn practical workplace-and-relationship-building knowledge and skills while improving their ability to use English in a business context. Thus, participants will be learning English in the most effective way: through learning topics that are important and interesting. The following groups will benefit from these personal-and-careerdevelopment workshops: Young adults, undergrads and post-grads, currently in universities; Recently graduated businesspersons at the beginning of their career; Middle-aged managers climbing career ladders; Those dissatisfied with their current jobs and thinking of changing careers.

About the Workshops

The sequence of these workshops is cumulative, that is, each builds on the previous one. All workshops present the material in PowerPoint, case studies, role-play, pair and team teaching-learning, mini-lectures, games, drawing, music, pre- and post-testing and frequent reviews, and physical exercises following proven research on brain-based, action learning. They come with thoroughly detailed participant workbooks (35 to 60 pages) to take home to continue life-long learning. Each workshop also includes a free PDF download of an entire book (100 to 400 pages) that complements the workshops content as well as a 2 page Quick Reference Guide that summarizes the essential points learned so participants can easily remind themselves and better apply their learning to the workplace.

Below are brief descriptions of the six courses in the order that will prove the most effective. I also have available for email, a zipped folder (VI.LinkageForLife,J.Carney,6courses) containing six detailed 2 page Introductions, that describe the contents session by session of the workshops discussed here as well as containing the document you are reading. 1. Assertive Self-Worth: Your Unique Usefulness (1 day) What are you worth? To whom, where, when, why and how? We start here: on the bedrock standing under everything you do: your Self what it is and what its worth to you and, of course, what its worth to others. We examine the continuous and varying creation of our self-worth from social others and from the lone me; and the choices you make, or have made for you, about the value and meaning of your life. No fake hype about inflating the Giant Within or hopeful wishes that avoid your weaknesses. This is about understanding freedom, responsibility, sympathy and knowledge. This is about caring for your Self and caring for others. We seek real, vulnerable, self-confidence capable of dying and being reborn, and of living and learning and loving through the typhoons of fate. Its about increasing your unique usefulness through others for yourself. If you dont know how thats done and think its important, attend and find out. 2. Communication Strategies: Finding the Common Ground (2 days) Effective communication is common-ication. Communication to be meaningful for both parties is about discovering and sharing common meaning. A common ground must be found that different persons can stand reliably on, and thus, be capable of being mutually understood. Two ears and one mouth provide the right distribution ratio for communication. We learn to listen in at least two languages: yours and theirs. "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Or, as the saying goes: It its to be, its up to me. This is the key to common communication. If you want to be understood, first understand. The Four Fears of the separate Self and the Ten Commandments of positive relationships are examined and you will find both engraved on your heart if you look within. The goal is to enable you to say what you mean and mean what you say while understanding how difficult this is and allowing for mistakes with the magic word: sorry. 3. Your Great Job Hunt Safari (1 day) Turn your fear and boredom of looking for work into an exciting Safari hunt for your Great Job. Jack is your organizer, resource, and guide on a job hunt Safari. Together, we explore a wilderness of possibilities where you learn what youre looking for in a trophy job one that fits your personality and abilities and therefore desire. This workshop includes a number of self-discovery and selfhelp exercises on values, skills, work preferences, networking, and setting work goals. You close by preparing a Personal Action Plan to get what youve identified as your trophy job.

4. Successfully Selling Yourself: Creating a Job Portfolio (1 day) Professional, yes but even more important: uniquely personal and proud of it. This workshop builds on the previous Safari one. Getting a job is selling yourself: packaging and delivering the unique You that can convince an employer that you bring value to his business. There is a sequence of tasks you can do that will provide you the best chance of landing the job you want. Thats what this workshop is about. You are guided step by step to present yourself in the best possible ways through a complete Job Portfolio creation. This includes help in designing your portfolio, writing your resume and cover letter, and including DVDs, work samples and the like. Then we get down to Getting a New Job in 60 Days, a complete program that day-by-day advances you realistically toward getting your trophy job. This is not easy or a sure thing. As usual with life, what you put in you will get back. But, if you follow the steps of this workshop, they will lead you to the best of yourself. 5. Becoming Visible: The Art of the Interview (1 day) To be SEEN, recognized as a capable person with uniquely useful skills and knowledge that will add value to an organization. This workshop builds on the previous Successfully Selling Yourself one. We explore the different types of interviews you can expect. We examine what kinds of questions are usually asked and how to best answer them. You practice strategies for success in interviews. In your role-plays you learn ways of relaxing before, during, and after interviews. You end by learning how to negotiate the pay you are worth. 6. Business Etiquette in the West: Manners Matter (1 day) Chinese businesspersons can deal better with their Western counterparts by enacting appropriate manners that signal crosscultural, sophisticated understanding. Can you win an Oscar on your acting performance with Western businesspersons? This workshop enables you to practice and make part of your skills, the ability to present the correct manners in your business dealings with Westerners. From handshake and business cards, to remembering names and dressing for success, you learn how to act in ways that will move you up the career ladder. I will be pleased to discuss costs and other details over the phone or through email or come to your office and give a brief presentation (you will be shown hard copies of the workbooks and PPTs) on these workshops/courses and 31 (yes, thirty-one) others, on organizational behavior, management & supervision, cross-culture and various soft skills.
