Dear Dr. Emely & Friends, Greetings of peace and love from General Nakar, Quezon! Our best wishes for you all of a blessed and fruitful year of 2009. I hope you had a meaningful and joyful Christmas season with you love ones. Its a pity that we were not able to see you at the airport when you arrived. It was then the busiest time in our school, examination time and preparation for the Christmas party of the students. Yes, after their exams they were just so excited to prepare their special numbers, as well as their special menu according to their budget. The weather here this time seems not so very cooperative. Instant heavy rains would just come anytime which would cause our worries because instant or flash floods would also follow. Our convent is always under water everytime theres heavy rains. We are beginning to be used to this condition which would mean wading in the mini-flood on our way out to the school and back to the convent.

One of the values we always wanted our graduates to have is the value of service and mission. That they study hard and be at the service of their country and people; that they become responsible stewards of God by offering their talents, time and treasure for others. As we attend to their academic potentials, we also give them opportunities to explore or discover their talents and be productive. In school, our co-curricular activities would include literary-musical competitions, sports and other school activities that would develop their personality, gain self-confidence and be able to communicate themselves through performing arts and theatre. Thus, we send our school teachers to attend seminars to equip them with expertise to be able to share with and develop students. Rice powder is steamed and made into a long cylinder-shaped rice cake called garaetteok. It is cut into finger size pieces and cooked in a spicy and sweet sauce. Meat, vegetables or ramyeon can be added depending on different tastes. Tteokbokki, along with gimbap and odaeng (skewered fish cake), is one of the most common foods sold by street vendors.

Bungeo-ppang gets its name from its fish-like shape. This sweet snack is molded in the shape of a carp, which is called bungeo in Korean. A pancake batter-like shell is filled with red-bean paste and then baked; it is especially enjoyed in the winter. Gukhwa-ppang is shaped like a flower and is slightly smaller than that of the similar tasting bungeoppang. Gyeran-ppang is also made of a pancake batter-like shell, but this is filled with an egg instead of the red bean filling.

CATHOLIC FAITH:
Pauls entire life can be explained in terms of one experiencehis meeting with Jesus on the road to Damascus. In an instant, he saw that all the zeal of his dynamic personality was being wasted, like the strength of a boxer swinging wildly. Perhaps he had never seen Jesus, who was only a few years older. But he had acquired a zealots hatred of all Jesus stood for, as he began to harass the Church: ...entering house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over for imprisonment (Acts 8:3b). Now he himself was entered, possessed, all his energy harnessed to one goalbeing a slave of Christ in the ministry of reconciliation, an instrument to help others experience the one Savior. One sentence determined his theology: I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting (Acts 9:5b). Jesus was mysteriously identified with peoplethe loving group of people Saul had been running down like criminals. Jesus, he saw, was the mysterious fulfillment of all he had been blindly pursuing. From then on, his only work was to present everyone perfect in Christ. For this I labor and struggle, in accord with the exercise of his power working within me (Colossians 1:28b-29). For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and [with] much conviction (1 Thessalonians 1:5a). Pauls life became a tireless proclaiming and living out of the message of the cross: Christians die baptismally to sin and are buried with Christ; they are dead to all that is sinful and unredeemed in the world. They are made into a new creation, already sharing Christs victory and someday to rise from the dead like him. Through this risen Christ the Father pours out the Spirit on them, making them completely new. So Pauls great message to the world was: You are saved entirely by God, not by anything you can do. Saving faith is the gift of total, free, personal and loving commitment to Christ, a commitment that then bears fruit in more works than the Law could ever contemplate.

PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF ST. PAUL THE APOSTLE

God, our Father, thank you for giving us St. Paul to be an apostle of your Son, Jesus Christ. With his great love and passion for Jesus and the Church, St. Paul used all means and became all things to all so that the power of the Gospel can reach all. With zeal he faced the challenges of travel, cultures, imprison ments, and beatings; of shipwrecks and sleepless nights, of magic and philosophies. Through all these he steadfastly witnessed the length, breadth, and depth of the mystery of Gods saving love and grace in Jesus Christ. We ask you, loving Father, that during this year dedicated to our beloved St. Paul, your tireless worker for the Church, we may come to know him more, especially his epistles which are now part of our Scriptures. May we come to understand the love for you and Jesus and the Church which consumed his life. May we serve you and the Church as he did, tirelessly, relentlessly, unstintingly, faithfully, and, most of all, lovingly. At the end, St. Paul gave his life as a last and lasting witness to his deep and living Faith in Jesus and in his Body, the Church. We pray that in our celebration of this year we may also deepen our faith and trust in your loving mercy and kindness. We pray that this year be a year for knowing, understanding, loving St. Paul, because through him, we can be sure that we will be led to you, our Father in heaven. We thank Jesus, who showed his mercy and revealed himself to St. Paul, for giving St. Paul to us as our example and intercessor. May St. Paul continue to intercede for us and for our country that we, too, may turn from sinful ways and be converted, so that we may attain peace in our hearts, in our families, in our country, and in the world. Albert Camus, in his book The Fall, tells the story of a successful Paris lawyer, Jean Baptiste Clamence. He is above reproach in his professional life. He has never accepted a bribe or stooped to a shady deal. He takes up the cause of the poor and defenseless free of charge. He does small acts of kindness, such as helping a blind person across the street, at every opportunity. He is model citizen responsible, virtuous and respected. He believe he is sincere. Yet within him there is immense pride and satisfaction in his own excellence. He owes nothing to anybody, but many people are indebted to him. He looks upon himself as a kind of moral superman. Then late one evening something happens that causes the music to stop and the lights to go out of his life. As he crosses a bridge, he passes a young woman. A few moments later he hears a splash, as if someone falling into the water, and a cry for help. He hears the cry several times but he does nothing. He goes away slowly trembling from cold and shock, and tells nobody about what happened. But the incident had a terrible effect on him. It shattered his illusion of his virtue and goodness. Why had he not gone to the rescue of the drowning girl? Suddenly he begins to see himself as he really is a phony, a play-actor, a man bursting with vanity, pride, anger, lust and shrewd selfishness. Unable to take what he discovers about himself he closes his office and throws himself into a world of alcohol and debauchery. He ends up frequenting bars where he tries to tell his story to anyone who will give him an ear. But it is hopeless because in his world there is no redemption, no way out. And that is how the story ends. The trap of shrewd selfishness is a great one, especially for so -called virtuous people. We who think we give our services for free can often be receiving a rich but destructive reward in the adulation we give to ourselves and in the admiration that we imagine we get from others. Jesus begins his ministry by announcing the good news. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the Good News!

What is this good news? Essentially, it is that forgiveness is available and that recovery is possible. One can find ones true self even after disastrous fall, or maybe precisely through the fall itself. Today the darkness has settled in to my once bright life. Today a ray of sunshine has been sent to another land to shine Today I gave my last hug and kiss Then waved goodbye to my parent. As they boarded that plane And I remember the clothes they wore The smile they showed to hide their sadness to me so that I wouldn't cry And slowly my happiness faded away. Misunderstanding came into me And it angered me then made me sad But thru all of it I still remember that smile It's from a childs point of view. And it cheered me up So I now count the days that seems so long and toiled And I count the days even more and wait to hear from them But I move on and slowly forget the sadness And want only me to be the best I can be in their absence.
