Non-Financial Reporting: Emerging Trend and Role of Governments

Theme:
India is fast emerging as a growth engine and the Indian businesses are now facing new challenges: These new-age challenges are different from the conventional ones active so far viz... challenge of growing profits, revenues and markets in the face of increasing competition, etc. The new challenges centre around securing a 'social license to operate', ensuring long term sustenance, generating a long term value and creating a win-win between business, society and the environment. In the midst of these transformational challenges, it is imperative for the business to perform not only financially but also to be good corporate citizens. Following the path of holistic growth and creating sustainable values is the only route that leads to embracing transformation, combating challenges and achieving growth. But.... is walking on the sustainability path alone is enough? Expectations of the stakeholders have changed from tell me to show me to prove me. The businesses that are following Sustainability as a new trajectory to growth are finding it inevitable to incorporate and include a wide range of stakeholders and communicate the social and environmental impacts of their business with this set of stakeholders. Sustainability Reporting or what we also call Non-Financial Reporting (NFR), is an evidence of commitment to these values, wherein Transparency and Accountability are the cornerstones, which also serves a pivotal role as a business strategy. The ever increasing number of companies adapting the practices of Non-Financial Reporting to communicate their sustainability impacts is becoming a mainstream business practice across the world. In India the trend of such Reporting is relatively new and the Companies are still grappling with the need for such disclosure. However, the number of companies communicating their sustainability impacts has risen considerably and Government too is encouraging such disclosures. Transparency is a key component in such reports that that helps both - companies and governments to manage resources and public expectations. Global Reporting Initiative GRI is the world's most widely accepted framework for communicating Non-Financial Performance status with stakeholders. (www.globalreporting.org). the flexibility of the standard enables companies of all sizes and sectors across the globe to utilize the standard for the creation and presentation of their sustainability stories. The theme of this seminar is to touch upon the finer aspects of the concept and also to gain insight into Government's approach towards Non-Financial Reporting, especially in the event of Corporate Social Responsibilities being recently mandated for Public Sector Undertakings.
