Getting Acquainted with the Virtual Data Center

This section is a quick start guide for understanding, setting up, and using the Virtual Data Center (VDC) to prep and deliver the classes. Only the VDC is covered in this section, as it is the primary environment that VMware instructors use to deliver the VI class. This quick start guide is intended for new instructors who need to access and use the VDC for prepping (or delivering) the Virtual Infrastructure class. It is assumed that the new instructor does not have the software or even the administrator accounts necessary to administer the VDC. This Quick Start guide is not intended to be exhaustive and cover all procedures related to the VDC. It is intended to provide a novice with a brief introduction to the basic VDC layout along with step-by-step setup procedures. Additional detailed information should be provided by your VMware mentor instructor. VDC Kit Description You will need the following information to setup and use the VDC. Each VDC kit is composed of 9 HP servers. The Master server is configured with several Virtual Machines. Two of these VMs run a Citrix terminal server, one VM runs a Linux DHCP/NFS server, and the last runs a SQL server. The Citrix servers provide access from the remote classroom desktops to the consoles of the master server and the 7 or 8 student ESX servers, similar to the way an X window server functions. Six or seven of the student ESX servers are installed and used by a pair of students during the class labs. Each student ESX server has 2 CPUs, an internal SCSI-RAID boot disk (device name cciss), access to SAN LUNs via a Qlogic controller (device name qla), and 3 network HBAs. One 1000 Mbps interface/network is assigned a static address and is used as the service console for the system. One 1000 Mbps interface/network is shared by the VMs created on the physical server. A DHCP server is available on this network so IP address assignment is automatic. The final 1000Mbps interface/network is used exclusively for performing VMotion between the student ESX servers. This final interface is not routed and is not accessible by any of the other networks. The names and IP addresses of all the kits and all Citrix .ica files to connect to these kits can be found under Individual VDC Kit Drawings with IP Addresses and .ica Files on http://docs.vmeduc.com .

Reference Information Environment/Document posted on http://docs.vmeduc.com Instructor VDC Introduction Guide VDC IP Configuration and VLANs Summary for all Kits Description/Use

Overall description of the VDC. Good for brand new instructors to read. Includes description of how kits are named, IP addressing patterns, etc. Overall IP addressing scheme for all VDC Kits to determine IP information for any one VDC kit. Since all servers in the VDC environment are configured in DNS, you should only need this information if DNS is not working. Do not give this to students. VDCLauncher is a tool that provides preconfigured links to all kits in the VDC. Download information for this tool is available at http://communities.vmware.com/thread/199330 . VDCLauncher can be downloaded from http://www.vdcstudents.com/citrix.htm . Username and password are available at http://communities.vmware.com/message/808948 The HOG generates student handouts for the various classes based on VDC kit assignment. These handouts should be generated and printed prior to start of class. http://communities.vmware.com/community/private/pso/gd/vdc/hog This handout generator can also be accessed from the VDCLauncher under the Instructor Tools category. The HOG is running in a virtual machine that is accessible remotely. Handouts generated from this location will be saved in My Documents and must be emailed using your private webmail. http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-10587 If you prefer not to use VDCLauncher (above), Citrix .ica files for the VDC kits are available from http://docs.vmeduc.com, http://vatc.vmeduc.com, and http://www.vdcstudents.com/VDC_kitname. Once you are on the training-direct mailing list, you will receive this email weekly. This is not a guarantee of receiving a server for prep. There are a limited number of prep servers available. You will be receiving one server in a kit and sharing the kit with other instructors that are also prepping for the same class.
